2816384, Mama! There go that man!
Posted by Cold Truth, Thu Jun-05-25 11:19 PM
This is a superstar making run like I've never seen

I've seen the snickering bits about Injuries to the Cavs and Celtics

Sure, but you play what's in front of you

And he's delivering in critical moments. He has half a HOF career worth of signature shots in one playoff run.

I've never seen a coming out party quite like this, where someone launched themselves into a whole other stratosphere in such grand fashion.

Yes, we've seen it, but this is in that upper echelon. Whether he's able to meet the expectations that he's set with this run is still anyone's guess, but he's put his stamp on this league in a big way.

As another Pacers point guard used to say in the announcers booth, "Mama! There go that man!".
2816385, He disappears for stretches of the game.
Posted by The Bobblehead Man, Fri Jun-06-25 08:43 AM
He is good at picking his spots, never seen him take 3 shots in a row for his team.

2816386, He’s 4/4 on game tying or game winning shots in a single Finals run
Posted by Cold Truth, Fri Jun-06-25 10:24 AM
One in each series

Three of these came one his opponents home court

One of those three came against a team on a historic run

Who cares if he takes three in a row

He’s hitting highlight reel shots in big moments in big games in every round, on the road, as the team’s star player.

That’s the story here, not “he disappears for stretches”.

All that’s saying is, “he’s not perfect”.

Whatever. He’s a killer.
2816387, Nothing personal I'm just against calling him a "superstar"

Superstars carry teams. No issue at all with anything else you are saying.
2816390, Non-superstars don’t do what he has done
Posted by pretentious username, Fri Jun-06-25 11:56 AM
Is he as consistent as other superstars? No. Does he fill out the stat sheet like other superstars? Also no. But I can’t look at the crazy things he’s done in these playoffs and not call him a superstar. I don’t know how it’s even still a conversation at this point.
2816391, Right-- and he averaged 21/6/10.5 in the ECF.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jun-06-25 12:56 PM
He's not on some Robert Horry shit, lol. Those are elite numbers.

Also, superstars are very clearly those with star power. When you make buzzer beaters and big shots? Your star power shoots through the roof. If he wasn't a superstar a month or two ago, he's becoming one before our eyes.
2816396, RE: Right-- and he averaged 21/6/10.5 in the ECF.
Posted by pretentious username, Fri Jun-06-25 02:09 PM
I’m curious to see that “most overrated” poll next year. I’m guessing he’ll earn the respect of people who labeled him overrated but those players could also dig their heels in cause they’re mad that he’s “not” a superstar.
2816398, It also could be both, y'know?
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jun-06-25 05:04 PM
Like, Reggie Miller, another Pacer, is a great example of a guy who was very clearly one of the biggest and most electric stars in the game but was also almost certainly "overrated" in terms of on-court basketball impact vs. the esteem in which he was held.

Honestly, the more you enter the superstar conversation, the more likely it becomes that people overrate you as well, lol. A weird thing!
2816393, RE: Nothing personal I'm just against calling him a "superstar"
Posted by go mack, Fri Jun-06-25 01:08 PM
Was Reggie Miller a superstar player? I kinda think so, was very famous mostly for being clutch in playoff moments. Also considered the team leader but regular season stats weren't that good.
2816445, Reggie had to fight people off just to get his hands on the ball.
Posted by The Bobblehead Man, Mon Jun-09-25 03:31 PM
>Was Reggie Miller a superstar player? I kinda think so, was

Reggie doesn't have the handle the Haliburton has but imagine if a prime Reggie Miller had a team that could space the floor & modern day green light to shoot from WHEREVER.
2816397, He’s a superstar. You need Jordan Peterson brand word salad to say otherwise
Posted by Cold Truth, Fri Jun-06-25 04:33 PM
You’d need a philosophy bro grab bag of nitpicking, goalpost shifting, question begging, semantic acrobatics to say he isn’t.

He does superstar shit and right now he’s doing something we don’t see many superstars doing at this level.

He went to the Superstar Party, kicked in the door, waved the .44, and we hear is “Hali, don’t shoot us no more.”

Even if he doesn’t get a ring, he’s on the vip list at that party now.

He’s Him, and he’s arrived.
2816400, After this run? You sound like a hater

2816388, If Nembhard can consistently frustrate SGA the same as he did Brunson
Posted by The Bobblehead Man, Fri Jun-06-25 11:10 AM
that's the real story. A couple teams will need to reevaluate things.
2816389, Halliburton has made one of *those* college-to-NBA leaps.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jun-06-25 11:52 AM
Because while he had so much of his current game in his college game, he was *not* a good pull-up shooter. Something like bottom 3rd percentile of all college players, let alone NBA prospects. Now there are few NBA players I'd trust more with an off-the-dribble shot in a key moment.

It's a development that's on par with, like, Kawhi being a 25% 3PT shooter in college and becoming a 40% 3PT shooter in the NBA. Usually when a player has a liability in his game in college, the best they can do in the NBA is become *passable* or less of a liability in that regard. But when you find that special player who can turn the liability into a game-changing strength, you have an absolute star on your hands.

I was always high on him-- and thought the Kings were insane to trade him-- but he's very obviously performing above even the highest expectations for him out of college, lol. It's very cool to see.
2816394, great observation...Any other players like that come to mind?
Posted by guru0509, Fri Jun-06-25 01:29 PM
Myles Turner is another one, he was not shooting like this for a longhorns

2816399, Shout out to Obi Toppin.. he used to bang on VCU when he was at Dayton
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Jun-06-25 05:57 PM
I knew that dude would be legit. His shot is ugly, he struggles at times but once he settles down he is a great role player.

2816401, he was 25 years old lol
Posted by Effa, Fri Jun-06-25 08:26 PM
i was so made we drafted him, a back up to randle when we had freaking no one at point guard. i wanted Vassell or Haliburton
2816402, he got drafted a few months after he turned 22...
Posted by cgonz00cc, Sat Jun-07-25 10:52 AM

kenyon martin will forever be the last number 1 pick that stayed 4 years

2816407, I didn't think it like that
Posted by Effa, Sun Jun-08-25 12:01 AM
I thought he was just an idiot or something lol. guy went prep school and we took him #6 overall, and guess what he still can't crack a starting 5.

back in the day, there was an onus on guys who stayed til their jr year at least

now theyre picking guys apart for staying 4 years

cest la vie
2816416, ncaa fucked it up
Posted by Effa, Sun Jun-08-25 07:01 PM
if the players got across the board money nothing would've changed. but now who knows what these guys get to jump around to different schools.

2816406, i could've sworn he was 25 lol
Posted by Effa, Sat Jun-07-25 11:59 PM
i wasn't trying to be hyperbolic.

I was definitely angry still. Knicks didn't need a backup to randle who barely sits. PG was a committee between DRose and Elfrid Payton. criminal to pass on haliburton even then not using hindsight. Even Vassell, yet another 3 and D yes but christ might as well keep taking one till you get a good one
2816409, that’s because he looked like a man among boys at Dayton
Posted by legsdiamond, Sun Jun-08-25 08:03 AM
5 for 8 from behind the arc in Game 1 of the Finals

Indy thanks you

But … free throws
2816421, WHERE DID THAT SUPERSTAR GO???

31 points TOTAL in the first 2 games of the finals.

Does not compute....

Dub was more aggressive, Chet looked like a different dude…on both ends and I can’t say enough about Caruso. Dude just does whatever you need…he hit some HUGE threes, before the lead swelled. Game 1 was such a waste, man. Shout out to Wiggs, too. 1 down.
2816429, NBA cutting corners.. No National Anthem, Championship logo

starting lineups should always be televised before playoff games at least.
2816444, I don’t care about anything besides the line ups as well
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Jun-09-25 03:26 PM
but I saw people complain about the lack of finals logos and someone this morning said they skimping and pointed out the other stuff

NBA like “we losing money on these Finals so fuck all that other stuff”

Do they even have the finals logo on the jerseys? lmao
2816447, Amin from LeBatard/Oddball said the Finals logos have been
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Mon Jun-09-25 11:16 PM
... have been digital since 2014 and the reason why is due to players shoe's grip on the physical labels.

I did see footage of digital logos of the Finals logo last night.

But the point is taken that there aren't many visible "traditional" signs marking these games as the league championship. They have special courts for the NBA Cup, so I think the league could figure something out during the games and have more time during the broadcast to build up the drama during pre-game.
2816449, that trophy logo looked like it was 12 dpi sent through dial up
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Jun-10-25 03:44 PM
shit was awful

Even if its been digital all those years, the fact it wasn’t even made for game 1 tells me the NBA dropped the ball.

Damn shame to go cheap since its 2 small markets. By game 5 they may be hooping on one basket on some make it, take it.. call your own fouls and shit.

2816468, So close to 3-1. Shit happens. This feels like a heavyweight fight.
Posted by Cold Truth, Sat Jun-14-25 09:56 AM
To the extent I have a dog that isn’t the Lakers, I love Reggie, have always liked Pacers teams, and love Hali. So that’s the team I want to see win

That said, OKC and SGA have a chance to do something special here by capping off a historically great season, with SGA winning MVP, the title, and Finals MVP.

Hali has arrived to the “superstar in this generation” room.

But SGA has a shot to kick the door into that all time great room. For the sake of clarity and any bad hot takes like I’m saying he’s top ten or whatever, no, that’s not what I’m saying.

But he gets to go to that rare air party if he wins this. He’s in that room.

In any case, this is a special Finals and it’s a joy watching a new generation come into their own. Modern parity has seemingly killed dynasties, but OKC is as well positioned for a decade of success as anything I’ve ever seen.

We’ve seen that before- with this franchise no less- and so there’s no guarantee they can get back, particularly out west. Houston could take a serious step with a fee offseason moves, Wemby and SA are about to move up a level or two, etc.

But man, this is a damn cool moment.

2816473, this pacers chaotic offense is tough to watch. theres ball movement
Posted by Effa, Sat Jun-14-25 11:20 PM
and then theres this. it works, i'll give it to them. but if the league copies this style forget it. worse than watching a celtics game.

also early in the game someone needs to just elbow whoever is pressing full court right in the teeth.
2816474, agree, getting your PG thrown out right away should be effective
Posted by DJR, Sun Jun-15-25 07:24 AM
2816482, lmao.. SGA be throwing some serious elbows to create space
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Jun-16-25 06:18 PM

Posted by Lach, Mon Jun-16-25 07:05 PM
But I have a feeling the Thunder take the next 2 to close it out
2816488, OKC defense smothering them
Posted by Amritsar, Mon Jun-16-25 08:30 PM
I still don’t fully believe in Hali as that top tier level of superstar either
2816489, McConnell had 18 points in 5 minutes and he’s back on the bench

Pacers blew their chance when they blew Game 4.

I'll never forgive them.

2816492, Call him HALIBUT cause his game is looking real flat and fishy
Posted by The Bobblehead Man, Tue Jun-17-25 10:05 AM
No one says Halibut is not "good" but many would say it's not worth the hype.
2816494, He shouldn't play next game if he can't keep up. Pacers can still compete
Posted by The Bobblehead Man, Tue Jun-17-25 12:59 PM
Let Rick Carlisle coach without a handicap.
2816496, I have not watched one second, but I'm aware.
Posted by Dr Claw, Tue Jun-17-25 06:40 PM
this is what I gotta say to the whole discourse since I hopped off:

- it ain't cute no more when your PG is compromised and can't move the way he's supposed to, when your offense suffers

- it also ain't cute no more when you don't get the benefit of the "ref armor" (Pacers survived Brunson, but SGA and Dort are a different beast)

- Chet ain't better than Evan Mobley, and never will be.

- Myles Turner ain't better than Jarrett Allen (and if you think so, (the rest of this is redacted)).

Game 4 was kind of some bullshit but listen. SGA and Jalen Williams are Hell when they're locked in. They better than KD and GOATBrook as a duo, because not only are they favored, they're not doing the bullshit.

I think it goes seven because Pacers still got something to say, but OKC takes it.

Good night.

2816525, Respect to Haliburton he was stuck between a rock and hard place.
Posted by The Bobblehead Man, Sun Jun-22-25 08:22 PM
But again the Pacers have a really good TEAM with a Hall of Fame coach. Haliburton's individual impact has been a bit been overstated. The Pacers can win without him.
2816531, Siakam going down would be far worse for them imo

I'm sure Siakam is fine going out on his shield. Fuck rotations.
2816547, Siakam is their best player. Unfortunately he isn't built to "lead" a team
Posted by The Bobblehead Man, Mon Jun-23-25 07:06 AM
He is fundamentally sound with high B-Ball IQ, it's not something that rubs off, or motivates other professional players. He's quietly in the right place at the right time, most of the time.
2816527, Pacers probably win this game if Haliburton isn't hurt.

Is exactly what OKC wants. They’re content with McConnell playing one on one ball while they stay home on the other pacers

He’s a nice microwave scoring guy off the bench in spurts but that’s the extent of it.
2816533, Congrats to the Thunder

68 wins. They’ve more than earned this
2816534, Silver should go back to rigging A-list stars to the Finals

Series went 7 and somehow feels very unfulfilling

Not 1 classic game

really sucks ass that Haliburton had THAT injury at THAT time, really took the wind out of my hating sails (for both teams)

glad it's over.

Have yourself a year, SGA

Agendas will be back on the menu in October.
