2802686, 2024 CFP Final, coincidentally for the national championship as well Posted by cgonz00cc, Mon Jan-08-24 04:44 PM
the two best teams all season long, with the best player vs the best defense, the final champions from each side of a dispute that has lasted for over a century
ill reiterate, this tournament means nothing to me. this game should have just been played last week in that setting, and everyone else could do whatever they wanted. im also reserving the right to deny the title of national champion to a 9-3 Kentucky team that wins their last 4 games incl a final vs a 10-2 Clemson team.
but the Pac 12 champ and the Big 10 champ are the only two undefeated teams in college football and they are playing each other to end the season. this IS the national championship game, and its never gonna be this good again.
Michigan wins by multiple scores as big plays for Washington are kept out of the end zone and field goals ensue, while Washington consistently struggles to get UM off schedule
34-23 sounds right

2802689, will be nice to see mich D vs a legit qb for the first time this year Posted by 3xKrazy, Mon Jan-08-24 06:35 PM
but i dont see wash being able to run the ball or being able to stop mich from running it. JJ connects on a few luck box 3rd down rollout plays and that will be that.
|
2802691, thats my general feeling as well Posted by cgonz00cc, Mon Jan-08-24 07:32 PM
but if washington ever has the ball AND the lead i will be clenched tighter than a drum

2802690, Hail. Posted by soulfunk, Mon Jan-08-24 06:37 PM
No win/loss prediction from me. I seriously think this is a coin flip. But I think the most important matchup of the game isn’t the strength on strength battle I’ve been hearing analysts talk about all week if the Washington offense vs. the Michigan defense, but it’s the other side with the Michigan offense vs. the Washington defense.
Both of those units are underrated IMO - Washington because that defense shows up BIG when needed, and their stats are deceptive because of playing against great offenses out west. Michigan’s offense is underrated for similar reasons - we seem to be inconsistent at times but part of that is playcalling based on just wanting to win games vs. running up big scores, and we’ve played against some great defenses.
|
2802692, a hopeful point Posted by cgonz00cc, Mon Jan-08-24 07:35 PM
Washingtons DTs arent really considered upper echelon within their own conference. they do have a star on each level of the defense as a whole, but their vulnerable points are where Michigan was gonna aim regardless.

2802702, I don’t like that 3rd down play call. Posted by soulfunk, Mon Jan-08-24 08:36 PM
Run it and get positive yards and it makes for a makable fourth and short, and more importantly keeps the clock rolling with Washington’s offense off the field.
|
2802704, Same here Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Mon Jan-08-24 08:39 PM
You're bludgeoning them on the ground. They haven't stopped them yet. I'd keep running it until UW proves they can legitimately slow them down.
And I would have gone for it on 4th. Settling for the FG was too conservative on 4th and 4 inside the red zone.
|
2802706, Yep. I’m good with throwing it on first and second down, Posted by soulfunk, Mon Jan-08-24 08:41 PM

2802723, Some of the coaching choices have been puzzling Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Mon Jan-08-24 09:27 PM
Like on the 4th and 4 inside the 15, I get the value of coming away with points. But, even aside from the unbelievable success in the run game, you mean to tell me that that offensive line couldn't move a hole large enough to get someone 4 yards?
One, as far as momentum and intangibles, it is a remarkably timid call. You have a physical team that has had a physical advantage all year and all game. It's a strength of the team, and I think it's okay to believe in them at that point of the game and run for the 1st.
Also, if you truly believe that UW is a threat, despite their struggles to that point, you're gonna need TDs not FGs. I'd be interested to see what the analytics showed, but the distance was reasonable and going up 24-3 is qualitatively different from 17-3.
And the 4th call near midfield was a headscratcher, too. The playcall was not inspired at all. In UM's defense, the LB for UW made a great play, but I think there's a call that gets McCarthy an easier throw or a run that gets one of their ball carriers an easier path to a 1st there.
In a way, the momentum shift could be a good thing, because Michigan played more with more force when there was a bit of a threat to them.
|
2802726, Agreed. My issue on that first drive was the third down call. Posted by soulfunk, Mon Jan-08-24 09:33 PM
On third and four that close, RUN it and if you don’t get it RUN it again on fourth and even shorter. I get the fourth and four being a bit long to go for it, but if we’d gotten some yards on third down it’s an easier call.
AND like I said when it happened that would have extended the drive and kept Penix off the field.
Completely agree on the call at midfield. I didn’t like that at all.
|
2802877, Agreed Posted by LegacyNS, Wed Jan-10-24 10:09 AM
Run on 3rd and 4 in the red zone... Punt on 4th and 3 near midfield. Hopefully you pin themn deep and get a stop... At a minimum Washington doesn't score a TD before the half..

2802755, UW fought hard all year and had a season to remember Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Mon Jan-08-24 11:05 PM
They never got into a rhythm tonight on offense, and while the defense managed to right the ship, for the most part, the Huskies were never able to shape the flow of the game in their favor.
If they could have gotten up by 10 or 14 points, they would have been playing from strength and had a legit shot. Their best shot was for Penix to play as well as he did last week, and Michigan have a letdown from the Rose Bowl. It didn't, and Michigan won tonight, but the outcome tonight should be no reflection on how successful this year has been.
|
2802758, oh, this game went exactly as I expected, EXCEPT for... Posted by PROMO, Mon Jan-08-24 11:10 PM
Penix being ass, and thus the offense.
now, it didn't help that Dillon Johnson was too injured for us to effectively run the ball as we're not deep at RB at all...so you do have to factor that into the offense as well.
but Penix was seeing ghosts all game and that's unusual. Michigan got pressure but it wasn't DANGEROUS pressure usually. he just lost the bit.
i fully expected us to give up the ghost against the run at first to see what they were doing and then adjust and shut it down and we did exactly that.
but man, the offense sucking just...i'm not even sad or mad just literally disappointed is all i'm feeling.

|
2802773, i'll say this: Posted by PROMO, Mon Jan-08-24 11:44 PM
i'll shoot Penix some bail. considering how bad he was holding his midsection at the end of the game, maybe he was hurt before the game even started which could explain why he was seeing ghosts trying to be super careful about not getting hit.
if not that? no excuses really.
|
2802778, Johnson was missed in pass pro as well Posted by will_5198, Tue Jan-09-24 12:03 AM
I would disagree that Michigan was not getting dangerous pressure, they were annihilating the LG and RT pretty regularly and it is scary if you could have a DL right in your face or coming from your blindside regularly
Penix *did* start seeing ghosts because of that, and also when Michigan would bail out of pressure and run games that confused the OL (Penix also doesn't take sacks, he will Eli it up there and his guys win most of the time)
I do agree that aside from the pressure there were a half-dozen throws that just were not accurate and ones he can make even with someone bearing down on him -- like he was too wound up to be perfect
|
2802779, good point about the pass pro. Posted by PROMO, Tue Jan-09-24 12:14 AM
i'd have to rewatch but i disagree about your disagree.
not too many guys right in his face that i remember, close but not in his face, except for when they are supposed to be (screens, etc). close should not be scaring him like it seemed to be.
even still if you're correct, as you aslo alluded to, he left enough easy stuff on the table that probably changes the outcome of the game.
|
2802919, I think you're being hard on Penix.. he was under immense pressure all night Posted by LegacyNS, Wed Jan-10-24 02:26 PM
NFL QBs have faired worse under similar circumstances. Penix was up against a NFL DC/scheme Monday night. It was actually a introduction into what he's gonna see regularly at the next level. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ <---- 5.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dlgiritpmfo

|
2802928, oh don't get me wrong, i'm not like mad at him or anything like that. Posted by PROMO, Wed Jan-10-24 04:19 PM
i'm just keeping it real. he didn't play well. i'm sure he'd tell you at least privately that he didn't play well (it is odd i didn't hear hardly anything as far as post game quotes go from him).
i understand Michigan is good defensively. they sped him up. however, he left A LOT of plays out there that he should have executed whether there was pressure or not and just off my memory what was left out there was enough to change the outcome.
i'm still very high on him for the NFL. very high.

|
2802786, woke up still super bummed. Posted by PROMO, Tue Jan-09-24 10:47 AM
this is probably one of the most disappointing losses i've experienced as a fan and the reason is two fold:
1. i didn't see us losing because the offense was poor. in fact, the game went exactly as I expected EXCEPT for Penix and the offense being bad. that's how we were supposed to WIN the game, not lose it, so that really stings.
2. we're not supposed to be in this position. we recruit 4 star guys on a good day. we were the right mix of coaching and some talent combining at the right time (Penix and the WRs), and it just feels like a rare opportunity wasted. like, i'm not sure when we get another one (opportunity at a title, let alone the actual trophy). obviously we have DeBoer still but we are gonna be losing a lot. and we still lack depth and talent at key positions THIS year BEFORE all the guys head to the NFL this offseason. like who will be our WRs next year? so i just think we missed a rare opportunity for our program. we're not bums by any means but we're not the LSUs, Bamas, Ohio States, etc. of the world who just reload with blue chips every fall.
might be recency bias but this hurts way more than Super Bowl XLIX.

2802815, An elite defense has the ability to make an elite offense have Posted by soulfunk, Tue Jan-09-24 02:07 PM
an off day. Doesn’t happen all the time. But elite defenses can make elite offenses make uncharacteristic mistakes. We only sacked Oenix once, but pressures was high all night just from the front four, while disguising coverages in the secondary to the point that even when there was a bust, Penix was hurried on his throws.
I’ve seen it happen many times over the last three years with this Ravens style defense. 2021 when Mike MacDonald was our DC, and 2022-23 with Jesse Minter - both from the Ravens. And the defense was specifically built to stop Ryan Day’s high powered offense. I saw Stroud make mistakes in 2021-22 that he didn’t normally make. So I wasn’t surprised to see that with Penix last night.

This Washington was fun to watch and well coached. If they were playing any other team besides Michigan, I would have rooted for them last night. I know you might not pull 4 and 5 stars like Bama and Georgia, but I still think you guys are heading in the right direction and will fare well in the Big 18ten.

2802798, revisiting my first impressions of Blake Corum Posted by cgonz00cc, Tue Jan-09-24 12:06 PM

5th all time rushing, and the only player in the top 5 with less than 700 carries. over the last 3 years Michigan has also had a combined 2700(!) rushing yards from Edwards and Haskins, and Edwards ran for like 700 of them while Corum was injured.
8th best rushing season ever last year despite only playing 10 games, 280 yards in those games he missed would have him in second, 365 yards would have given him the record
1st all time rush TDs
1st all time single season rush TDs

i'm saying yes only because after the Sugar Bowl i had started seeing him with his highest projections (top 8).
i'd say he'll now go between 12 and 20, so that's a drop from top 8...but a lot of people always thought that's where he'd go and if you thought that, then no.

|
2802850, Because Maye is better than JJ Posted by calij81, Tue Jan-09-24 10:08 PM
JJ is basically AJ McCarron.
|
2802851, well thats a silly thing to say Posted by cgonz00cc, Tue Jan-09-24 10:23 PM
AJ McCarron was a 5th round draft pick after 4 years, and JJ will be a 1st round draft pick after 3 if he leaves
if he stays as long as McCarron did he could be #1 overall
but yeah im sure that 6 pt 4th quarter vs a rotten GT defense was just bad luck
|
2802852, Other than big and white, I don’t see it with JJ at all Posted by calij81, Tue Jan-09-24 10:40 PM
I doubt he ends up in the first round but it’s certainly possible if a team decides they really want him. More than likely I think he goes in the 3rd round.
I think he is comparable in talent and accomplishment to McCarron. He played on a talented UM team, with a great coach, in a run heavy oriented offense and against a bunch of bad teams. He made a few clutch throws here and there but I never saw him take over a game with his arm.
|
2802853, for one thing, hes not big. hes 6'2 200 lbs Posted by cgonz00cc, Tue Jan-09-24 10:53 PM
>I doubt he ends up in the first round but it’s certainly >possible if a team decides they really want him. More than >likely I think he goes in the 3rd round.
there is a zero percent chance hes on the board when the 3rd round of his draft starts
>I think he is comparable in talent and accomplishment to >McCarron.
for another, the NFL doesnt think that at all. hes going to be picked 100 or more places above where McC was picked. also, McCarron had a career total of (-50) rushing yards, while McCarthy has 600.
if you tell me you think AJ fucking McCarron could have pulled off any of the double pass vs Bama, the Roman Wilson TD vs OSU, or the scramble up the middle against UW this will be the last conversation we ever have.
>He played on a talented UM team, with a great coach, >in a run heavy oriented offense and against a bunch of bad >teams. He made a few clutch throws here and there but I never >saw him take over a game with his arm.
thats not how they win games, but his PFF grades (and eye test grades) for OSU and Alabama are through the roof. i think it's fair to stipulate that those were as good as any other 2 defenses anyone faced anywhere in the country.
|
2802856, ESPN has him listed at 6’3, 204 pounds Posted by calij81, Tue Jan-09-24 11:14 PM
He is a better scrambler than McCarron. He is capable of making some good throws and he did play well against Alabama and OSU.
We will see when draft day comes around and see where he ends up going. I still think he doesn’t get drafted in the 1st round. He might be this years Levis in terms of a draft day slide so he might want to stay out of the green room and watch the draft from home.
|
2802939, that pass gets intercepted 9 times out of 10 Posted by 3xKrazy, Wed Jan-10-24 05:33 PM
>, the Roman Wilson TD vs >OSU
was thrown directly at true frosh #25 malik hartford who inexplicably bails on the play (and his responsibility) 1/100th of a second too soon.
and not even getting into what happened after that which obviously wasnt on JJ. but that throw was not a good decision.

and when he turned so far to the right that he had to turn his back to the QB to stay with the man crossing his zone, JJ spun the ball right by his earhole into a miniscule window. the throw still needed to be perfect even with the DBs bad hips
i dont know what his age has to do with anything. its not like hes out there because he won a raffle.

>i dont know what his age has to do with anything.
inexperienced players make mistakes
>its not >like hes out there because he won a raffle.
he was out there cause the 3 year starter went down for the year lol
JJ fit it into a tight window for sure but it shouldn't have been thrown and theres no way he couldve known that 25 would bail on the play like that. looks like he just straight up didnt see him like the opening play in the rose bowl.
|
2802857, I don't see that with McCarthy Posted by will_5198, Tue Jan-09-24 11:34 PM
>if he stays as long as McCarron did he could be #1 overall
#1 overall draft pick in 2025? on mother nature's planet earth?
his mobility is plus and he actually throws well on the run instead of just scrambling for first downs, and he can deliver the ball in tight windows between the hashes. young with limited passing reps so you can play racquetball with the word "upside" in the draft room.
but he is not consistent between the tackles. so many random errant throws and missed reads. big boy NFL throws are wildly inaccurate at times (deep outs, corners, go routes, digs). gets very pre-snap dependent and does not adjust without breaking the pocket. his arm talent is average, good enough but not special by NFL means. weak build for a running quarterback.
he would have to be groomed and play in a similarly advantageous system as in college (I don't mean Michigan's offense, but the fact he played behind the best OL in college for three straight years and was always ahead of the sticks in run/pass situations).
|
2802859, its a decidedly different qb class Posted by cgonz00cc, Wed Jan-10-24 12:27 AM
with 10-15 lbs and reasonable progression along a reasonable development curve for his age (20!), he will absolutely be in that mix
unless carson beck or shedeur sanders really lights the world on fire, he is minimum first QB picked
|
2802869, JJ is nothing special... lol Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Jan-10-24 09:58 AM
Dude reminds me of Tannehill or Mitch Trubisky and we all know Mitch was way over drafted.
I think he is a Day 2 or Day 3 pick.
He will probably get overdraft due to a winning a chip and his college record but the second half of the season this year they took the ball out of his hands for some long ass stretches.

Didn’t harbaugh call him the greatest qb of all time or am I butchering that quote?
But the fanbase will buy into absolutely any nonsense that guy says.
JJ has good wheels and confidence but outside of that he’s a mediocre college qb and gets away with a lot of throws he won’t be able to at the next level.
If he’s really getting a first round grade right now he should bounce and take that cash like Cardale should’ve done.
|
2802899, yes Posted by cgonz00cc, Wed Jan-10-24 11:45 AM
and the NFL does too
when Bo Nix was his age, after his second of 3 years at Auburn, people would have laughed in your face if you told them he would be a 1st round draft pick one day
and thats the son of a coach and former NFL QB
20 years old, with his best performances in the biggest games against the best defenses
and the idea that we're talking about systems as tho JJ wouldn't do MONSTER numbers at UNC is a little disingenuous
|
2802904, I don’t even think Nix is a 1st round pick this year Posted by calij81, Wed Jan-10-24 12:11 PM
JJ could come back next year or the next 3 years and in no world would he be the 1st overall pick next season or even the 1st QB taken.
JJ wouldn’t do monster number and UNC because he would have a monster OL to protect him or a run oriented offense that puts him in short down and distance to succeed.

|
2802909, Do you really think UNC offense was a run oriented offense like UM? Posted by calij81, Wed Jan-10-24 01:42 PM
UM’s offense ran the ball early and often. They were much more of a run oriented, ball control offense. UM also had a much better defense than UNC so this offensive approach worked and made sense for UM.
It doesn’t matter, as we will see when the draft process starts. The combine and pre draft workouts will give us a better idea of where JJ will land.

Also, Michigan is used to Penix. They had tons of film on him from his days at Indiana.

also i didnt realize that bit about him on CMUs sideline had moved into the realm of "basic facts". where was that confirmed?
finally, what part of my quip about connor spending his money on tickets led you to believe that i dont think he bought tickets? that joke wouldnt have made sense if i wasnt acknowledging that he spent money on tickets.

>Partridge spoke with players about the NCAA interviews; he >didnt destroy evidence. so now that the article has at least >one "basic fact" wrong, youll excuse me if i dont take the >rest as settled business.
dismiss that article all you want as there are plenty other sources of information. you could also use your brain to determine that he wasnt funding this operation on his own dime and 60k salary.
>also i didnt realize that bit about him on CMUs sideline had >moved into the realm of "basic facts". where was that >confirmed?
and this is where the conversation gets intellectually dishonest. as you had told calij that you couldnt interact with him because he had a differing opinion on a quarterback...debating the reality of happened at CMU isn't really worth the keystrokes. its just gaslighting at this point.
and the CMU sideline circus didn't occur in a vacuum. you could take that singular incident out of the equation and the multi-year impermissible scouting scheme would still exist. receipts and all.
>finally, what part of my quip about connor spending his money >on tickets led you to believe that i dont think he bought >tickets?
it was the part where you questioned connor spending his own money to scout indiana.

the only schools I read that weren't scouted was NW
mich was 30+ point favs vs purdue and MSU and they were both scouted so clearly there wasn't a lot of selectivity taking place here. which actually makes me think this could've been gambling related more than anything else.

so if we know NW is NOT one, you picking IU or Wisconsin?
but this is a stupid thing to even be talking about, because if they were going to watch film of Penix at Indiana, are they really going to watch the iphone footage of the sideline? beyond that, do we really think the NCAA rolled into town and then told UM they could keep the allegedly ill-gotten footage?

Dude had injury history and did not look good under pressure in college..
but he looks much better in the NFL thus far.
I think it's hard to know what these guys will look like once they get to the pros.
Hell, Buckeye fans HATED Stroud simply because he couldn't beat Michigan and said he wouldn't be legit in the NFL.
I would not pass on Penix if I needed a QB. Hell, if he is there when the Steelers pick I hope we take him. Doubt we will but until you know you have a QB keep drafting them.
|
2802883, apparently the UW O Line (and Pac 12 defenses?) did Penix dirty... Posted by PROMO, Wed Jan-10-24 10:22 AM
is sort of way to look at it.
cuz no team all season got pressure on Penix (or much last season for that matter).
so once a team got pressure on him he wilted. he'll have to work on that part of his game specifically.
i think this will be a bigger question for scouts than his injury history and i say that because the pressure was nominal meaning the throws were still there to be made despite the pressure and he missed them, and thats really one of the selling points of a GOOD NFL QB - standing in the pocket when it's collapsing and delivering the ball accurately.
i don't think the game was an INDICTMENT on him. i still think he'll be very good at the next level. but, he's gonna have to show and prove regarding what i mentioned.
