Lakers @ Nuggets: Game 2

Denver leading the series 1-0, LA looking to steal a game on the road.

*skatin' the rings of saturn*

..and miles to go before i sleep...
2791304, Y’all know what time it easy.
Posted by allStah, Thu May-18-23 07:17 PM
Boo Lakers. Let’s go Denver.

Hi, Cyren!
2791305, its crazy how 'must win' doesnt mean must win anymore.
Posted by Reeq, Thu May-18-23 07:29 PM
pundits calling game 2 of a 7 game series 'must win' for the road team now.

like the road team cant win their home games and reset the series.

2791306, Well...
Posted by Ryan M, Thu May-18-23 07:32 PM
You have to think it's probably easier for the Lakers, knowing they have to win one on the road, to win one of the first two games than it would game 5 or 7. So, not a MUST win, but...kinda?

Then, if you're the Celtics...yeah - it's a must win game 2. You can't go back to Miami down 0-2.
2791307, These calls seem…one sided
Posted by Ryan M, Thu May-18-23 07:48 PM

2791341, And another blown foul call.
Posted by Cold Truth, Thu May-18-23 08:32 PM
The refs are totally sucking that purple dick tonight
2791366, They’ve been terrible both ways.
Posted by Ryan M, Thu May-18-23 09:09 PM
Definitely was benefitting the Lakers early on.

It’s just been poor officiating which sucks because no matter who wins, it’s part of the story.

16/8/5..2 steals..first half

On pace for similar numbers 32/16/10

FOH
2791356, You got it wrong, as usual
Posted by Cold Truth, Thu May-18-23 08:47 PM
We found something that *allows AD* to roam on defense

What we found was about AD
Not Jokic
2791359, and Hachimura has 17 points
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu May-18-23 08:49 PM
2791360, At half time- and shooting 100% at that
Posted by Cold Truth, Thu May-18-23 08:51 PM
Dude is way too committed to the bit
2791358, Lakers up 5 at halftime and you are bragging about 16 pts?
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu May-18-23 08:48 PM
and Joker had 12 rebounds in the first quarter last game.

Lakers also out rebounded Denver 123 to 10 first quarter
2791361, Yeah nigga…16 first half points!
Posted by allStah, Thu May-18-23 08:55 PM
8 rebounds

5 dimes

Shooting 60 pct from the field

SMH

and thats a halftime score, ain’t no victories for being up half time.

Jokic still abusing all lakers in the paint.

Bron and AD have both been bum as hell
2791370, And yet you were still wrong about what the Lakers found
Posted by Cold Truth, Thu May-18-23 09:19 PM

2791453, What do the Wizards plan to do
Posted by Numba_33, Fri May-19-23 08:26 AM
regarding the contract situations for Porzingis and Kuzma? Next year will be the last for both dudes. Am I correct I assuming only one will get re-signed since Beal's contract is already so gargantuan? Just checked basketball reference for Kuzma's contract and I have to assume he's going to look for a major bag since he's so underpaid relative to max contracts. As promising as his flashes have been, I have to imagine the Wizards fan base is skittish on wanting to give him a bag.

2791393, Just glanced at his coaching experience on Wiki out of curiosity….
Posted by guru0509, Thu May-18-23 09:47 PM
He started his coaching career in 2008! No wonder Steven a was so incensed about Steve Nash getting the Nets job

D league - Albuquerque NM assistant and eventually head coach

2011 - Lakers assistant (w Mike Brown )

2011- Basketball camps for under privileged kids in Myanmar and Venezuela - humanitarian trips for the State Dept

2013 - ATL hawks coaching staff

2018- Milwaukee bucks staff

Never unemployed , always on a staff somewhere , He paid his dues and then some

2791395, Damn! I only knew him on the Bucks.

2791428, i revise this statement: it's 35% on Bron, 65% on AD.
Posted by PROMO, Thu May-18-23 10:17 PM
i went outside for most of the 3rd quarter so i guess i didn't realize how terrible he was on offense.
2791418, Haven’t loved this of course, but it’s been a great series.
Posted by Ryan M, Thu May-18-23 10:08 PM
Lakers threw everything at Denver tonight. LeBron blew some absolute gimmes which sucks so bad, but they really did a great job other than his hero 3s and blown dunk. Even the late miss you can chalk up to being old and gasssed.

They can still do this, but why wouldn’t this be hard? Denver is the 1 seed. It’s supposed to be hard as shit.
2791419, Bron looking his age

2791423, the ONLY silver lining for the Lakers?
Posted by PROMO, Thu May-18-23 10:11 PM
their adjustments worked for the most part so they don't have to change a lot.

but if they can't be more locked in on defense? they are fucked.

cuz one thing that the Lakers don't have that so many other teams do including the Nuggets, is high level three point shooting. outside of Reaves, the Lakers don't have any other GOOD three point shooters.
2791426, Why is it so hard for AD to have 2 solid games in a row?
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu May-18-23 10:13 PM
2791427, man, i can't call it.
Posted by PROMO, Thu May-18-23 10:16 PM
2791479, he's a guard in the wrong body lol.
Posted by tariqhu, Fri May-19-23 09:48 AM
he's too flimsy to hang inside. he can't really push Jokic around in the paint. he like everything spot the paint.

all that to say, it's mental.
2791433, Jamal being cold as shit made those adjustments
Posted by josephmurf2384, Thu May-18-23 10:43 PM
Appear a lot more effective than they were.
2791434, disagree. they were in his shit in the first half way more.
Posted by PROMO, Thu May-18-23 10:59 PM
their defensive intensity fell off at the end, and once you let a guy like him heat up there's no telling what might happen.

2791424, this shit is done we not winning 4/5
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu May-18-23 10:11 PM
good job good effort but idk why Bron decided to play hero ball this series it's cost us both of these games.
2791429, i'm down bad right now. i hate Jamal Murray near as much as Jokic.
Posted by PROMO, Thu May-18-23 10:19 PM

2791437, Man, these playoffs have been joyful as hell.

Find some solace in that these games were close and the Nuggets are the 1st seed. Gotta win one there, but the Lakers will be better at home.

Even then - if this shit is a sweep and the next 2 games are like this? It was still an incredible run in a year where all hope was lost.
2791444, Not really.

Short of traveling back in time and beating the 96 Bulls, you would spin any Lakers win as being bad somehow. It’s honestly weird. Just take the L. It’s easier than jumping through all these hoops.
2791511, I mean, all this.
Posted by Ryan M, Fri May-19-23 11:59 AM
It doesn’t matter though. I’m so through giving that dummy any air. I’ve been one of the reasons for all the back and forths throughout these posts, and that’s no fun for anyone. I can’t deal with someone who still talks like it’s 2006 anymore. It’s just weird and desperate.
2791431, Lakers need to get Kyrie tickets for game 3 / 4 , so DLO is max productive

Oh you don’t like talking about that injury do you?

Just like you don’t like talking about anything that’s inconvenient toward your weird little obsession.

we’ve made it awfully close each time out.

Let’s see what happens at home.

Either way, this team made the WCF after being 8 games below .500.
To even be contending after this season is already a win.

People were *also* talking about how Jokic was the best player in basketball, how there is no answer for him offensively, etc

You’re to busy ibsessing over the Lakers to see it.

That all you see and hear is “Lakers” is a you problem, not a problem with the fans or the media.

but MJ signed up with the fucking Wizards....not sure who the AD equivalent is in that time off the top but had he gone somewhere like LA and teamed up with that person, of course they'd be in the playoffs. And even then, pre injury Wiz MJ was doing things.

Bron been on the wrong side of the playoffs a few times towards the end of his career, but that magically didn't happen.

Shit isn't comparable.

Had MJ gone to say New York and pushed to team up with KG and they missed the playoffs...then you could talk.

That's the problem with your Bron = GOAT shit...nearly all of his accolades have ** due to the amount of help he got himself.

But I know you started watching ball in like 07 at the earliest.

You trying to compare their late career team success is just as stupid as L-Stah partying off of a blown dunk.

And a bad foot doesn't excuse chucking threes like he think he's Steph or some shit.

Shit I like Lebron, but your over the top stannery is too much.

down 3-1.

Sure sounds like "front-runner" to me.

And I'm probably not as old (and certainly not as bitter) as you are - but I've been playing and watching basketball since the early 90's. But it's a classic Stadiq stalker move: thinking you actually know people in real life because you exchange thoughts on a message board.

And what we're talking about here is simple: who is the best best basketball player at age 38 that the game has ever seen?

It's not Michael Jordan. It's not even close. Nobody has been as great as LeBron *this* late in their career. That's an objective fact. So allstah (and you) trying to somehow feign that Jordan was on-par with the standard Bron is setting in year 20 is absurd. What's even funnier is the dismissal of him winning in year 20 - making a deep playoff run to the WCF (and being the reason that the team ultimately defeated the defending champs) as if this is just some negligible feat. If MJ did this at 38, we'd never hear the end of it.

and the Nuggets are winning the NBA title - it's as close to a lock as anything you'll see in sports. They make me feel the way Tiger made me feel in like 06 , why is anyone else even trying?

Their closest competition is the team they're playing now, and they're up 2-0 on even that team. To have stolen this series the Lakers obviously had to steal one on the road and get more balanced games from AD. But they're in a two game hole and Davis can't play defense if he's scoring and can' t score if he's playing defense, so here we are.

Nuggs may sweep the Heat or Celtics (On pride, Butler probably won't let them get swept) But Jokic is a transcendent player who will go down Top 10 of all time. Murray on his own is the best scorer on about 20 other teams in the league. Their ability to just get huge buckets in huge moments and close big leads in like 90 seconds of game clock ... I mean I see that shit happen in college all the time, but at this level it's not so common.

It's hilarious that Embiid beat out Jokic for MVP, because I just watched that emotional wreck sloppy ass Sixers team gag and quit and while the Nuggets seem to get BETTER when they're down and have to tap into their resolve. Jokic is the best player on earth and it's not really up for debate. It seems life or death to him...the effort never ebbs and flows, it's up all night. If you aren't a Lakers fan but love hoops you can only just watch in awe and appreciate him.

My brother and I went to see the Nuggets when they came to town in March. Looking at Joker's line at the end of the night was puzzling - he scored over 30, double digit boards, and almost a triple double and it felt like he never even tried.

Michael porter Jr hasn’t even gone off (yet) and put together a complete game (per his standard)

They’re just too fast deep and young for LAL

2791461, Both of these games in Denver were winnable
Posted by Vex_id, Fri May-19-23 09:11 AM
but winnable doesn't mean anything when you're down 0-2. Lakers needed a split as it's a crazy task to take out the best team in the league 4 out of 5 games now.

Bron & AD had this game in their hands - and had they both made just a few more shots - Lakers could be going home with an entirely different energy/narrative. These two 4th quarters were frustrating to watch for Laker fans; delightful for Nugget fans as they've really closed these first 2 games as brilliantly as you could ask. They look like a championship team and are clearly the better team in this series top-to-bottom. Their roster is deep af.

But Lakers have had an unbelievable run up until this point. LeBron can't carry this team in year 20 - especially on a bad foot. I was hoping AD would continue to dominate in game 2, but he was too aloof in key spots and Bron's jumper is broke again (after finding his rhythm against GS where he shot essentially the same % as Curry).

Series isn't over - but it's now an improbable climb back to beat this Nuggets team - a team that deserves its flowers. They're elite.

I've said consistently the past few years that with a healthy Bron and AD I like our chances against anybody in a 7 game series.

Hopefully Bron can get back home and sleep in his hypobaric chamber or what ever he does and we can get these 2 LA games and make this a series again.

Posted by PROMO, Fri May-19-23 09:34 AM
not just off the missed threes, but he blew a handful of layups and obviously that dunk attempt.

but it's the layups for me...he just didn't look like he was elevating like normal (and i'm talking like old man lebron normal). lebron can get up still when he wants to, but even when he had uncontested or lightly contested layups at the cup, his usual vert didn't look to be there.

and if i'm right, cuz i could be wrong, maybe that lack of elevation was why all his threes were way off as well.
2791478, Both, probably.

2791481, his legs are shot and he's not able to plant - foot is bothering him
Posted by Vex_id, Fri May-19-23 09:55 AM
There have been numerous times where he'll plant on a hard-drive to the rim and he just flat-lines and sometimes falls over his own feet. There's a before/after video of LeBron before his foot injury and after this year, and you can see a clear difference in his explosiveness off of the drive and plant.

Foot has hampered him, combined with age and having the 2nd most mileage in nba history, and a deep playoff run playing high leverage basketball every other night against two teams that everyone had beating them (Memphis & the defending champs) and now the best team in the league, and he's trying to guard Jokic at that.

Unsustainable. Impossible ask for Bron to play that level of two-way basketball for 40+ minutes a night in his 20th season. He needs to continue to play off the ball more and more where he's very effective on cuts/slashes to the rim and can pick his spots.

On paper, it’s been a close series. One team looked like the better team through 3 quarters, then the other team did. Both time, the Nuggets pulled it out. That’s what title teams do. The Lakers had a serious mountain to climb already, and now they’ve gotta win 4 out of 5. They can tie this up at home, no doubt, but man…the Nuggets just look like they’re clicking on all cylinders even against elite defense.

This is such an unusual position for the Lakers - there were many fans HOPING this would happen, but no real expectations. I can't really remember the last time that happened. I guess it was the Kobe vs the Suns year when they went up 3-1? Whatever though - that was like 17 years ago.

This has been fun. I'd love the ride to keep going, and it'd hurt that much more to MAKE the finals and not win, but it'd still be a finals run. Who'd have thought that was possible in like, January?
2791536, It's been such a crazy ride this year
Posted by Vex_id, Fri May-19-23 02:06 PM
the high & low peaks have been dramatic.

From 2-10 start, 13th in the West, 0.3% chance of making playoffs all the way to taking out both the #2 seed and the defending champ dynasty in 6 games apiece, and in the WCF playing championship-level basketball, once again.

And you throw in the Kareem record in the middle of it. Whether they win a title or not - just the fact that they have gone this deep into the playoffs on the fly (trade deadline) is wild.

And because of the way they structured these deals, they can come off almost all of them. I get the feeling that D. Lo might not be the best fit for this team -- and still wouldn't be surprised to see Kyrie in a Lakers uniform.

2791547, lakers already scored more points in game 1 than the suns did
Posted by Reeq, Fri May-19-23 03:37 PM
in any of the 1st 3 games in their series (and the 4th game the suns outscored that total by only 3 points). and that was the suns highest point total of the entire series.

the lakers lowest point total of the 1st 2 games (103)...bron and a.d. both had to put up absolute stinkers together for that to happen. the suns only scored that or more in *half* the games that series.

the lakers are already averaging 7 points more per game in this series than the suns did their entire series.

and its safe to assume the lakers (especially the role players) will play even better at home like they have all playoffs (why they are undefeated there).

the lakers have 5-man lineups where everyone on the floor can get their own shot off. the suns had kd and book and thats it.

the lakers erased big denver leads in both games to make it close down the stretch. including a game where denver was making miracle shots and jokic had arguably one of the best statistical playoff games since wilt chamberlain. firepower isnt really their biggest issue imo.

that lakers defense is prolly gonna bring down that nuggets scoring avg as the series goes on (compared to the suns series) too. so less of a hurdle to clear in terms of scoring margin.

and do you know how crazy it is that im sitting here propping up the lakers to *you*? lol.

2791624, Lakers are the favorites tonight -6
Posted by allStah, Sat May-20-23 10:49 AM
It could close higher depending on the action..but the makers opened it up
at -6 ( depending on the book)

The books have been pretty accurate with these Denver/ Lakers games. You take
away high altitude, playing at home, score swings in each game, lakers are
predicted to win tonight…makes sense, but will they cover?

I’ve been doing really well during the POs. I do feel like the Lakers will
get a win tonight, but I can also see Denver closing the show…

So I do see value in Denver covering, even if the Lakers win.

Titling towards Denver to cover/ Lakers win
2791651, Hoping for a convincing Lakers win tonight.

Murray when he was bringing the ball up.

Not sure how Ham missed that but it wasn't a thing in Game 2, and not so far here either.

And here we are.

2791664, His +/- in this series is staggering. It’s like -40 or something.

In 2 games where they were decided by like 11 points. One thing Vogel was very good at that Ham doesn’t seem to be yet is utilizing situational lineups. But whatever man.

2791666, Dennis on him is better than DLo, but Murray is just on a HEATER.

We were the proverbial Team Nobody Wants To Face. A dark horse, not a favorite.
We had some glaring flaws going into this.

We saw them at the time, at least most of us did.

The core of this Denver team has been together for years.

That does not mean that we were not *also* outplayed.

They’re the better team, and we keep saying it.
2791732, Jokic had 11 through 3 quarters…
Posted by Dstl1, Sat May-20-23 10:17 PM
then 15 in the 4th. That’s just too tough at winning time. That last 3 he hit, broke the Lakers backs, collectively. You could see the everyone on the floor feel it at the same time.
2791734, Lakers got out-played/coached...
Posted by CyrenYoung, Sat May-20-23 10:18 PM
..LA had every opportunity to win this game but failed to answer the call.

Even with Murray's incredible effort, the Lakers were within striking distance and getting stops. The defensive adjustments worked well in the 2nd half, but LA went cold at the worst possible time in the 4th, allowing Denver to make one final surge to put the game out of reach.

This is not the way.

2791744, basically.
Posted by PROMO, Sat May-20-23 11:12 PM
Lakers not really losing cuz of their defense on Jokic, they are just getting destroyed by better shooting than they can compete with.

that Rui adjustment was the one to make on Jokic and for the most part, it's helped a lot to slow him down, but it's not THE game changer.

gotta just chalk it up.
2791745, Great strategy! It’s rarely happened before.

2791762, Lol!!!!! Jokic has 2 3x2s and a game
Posted by josephmurf2384, Sun May-21-23 02:49 AM
where he had 24, 8, 6 while sitting for almost an entire quarter and let MPJ take 4 boards from him. If Rui slowing down Jokic in what could be a sweep is the Laker's pyyrhic victory, they gonna have a lot of problems, especially if they consider that slowing him down.
2791746, Honestly outside of the first half of game 1…
Posted by Ryan M, Sat May-20-23 11:19 PM
Most of the adjustments were great. Defensively, the Lakers DID seem to find something that worked. Their defense would have probably rattled any other team is the West. They threw EVERYTHING at them - and the Nuggets either maintained a lead through it all or weathered the storm. You tip your cap. They’re just better.

In a way, I get it because the Lakers exceeded expectations up to that point so there was precedent in seeing the upside. Still, though...

Some dudes got way too crazy hyped over some adjustments in a losing game. And Mike Malone was not wrong to point this out, either. It was...weird.

This "ya'll are the first seed, what you expect" was not the attitude of some after game 1.

To act now like Denver being up 3-0 was completely expected is not being genuine. At all.

Yeah tip your cap and all of that, but also...take the L. Most of ya'll did not expect this. *shrug*

2791757, I think most rational fans did expect a loss.

A 3-0 hole? No.

But a series loss? Yes.

There was HOPE, and of course - you’d love to ride this run longer, but I think anyone truly paying attention thought this would more than likely be an L. The surprise is just how quickly they’re being disposed of.

>Who? I think this is overblown, and I think you and khn are
>confusing confidence with hopeful optimism.

You're doing way too much. Go reread that sentence I wrote that you're (incorrectly) fixating on.

There was clearly, both here and more broadly, a not-insignificant set of ppl who thought one adjustment in one quarter of a seven game series was somehow indicative of something more. As if a world-class coach, two HOF's in their prime, and an incredible supporting cast wouldn't have several counter moves for it... lmfao. I don't know how that's not supposed to be insulting. Valid motivation or not. It is what it is.

As I've said to others, I didn't *make* anyone say that. So while we're getting all meta with it, btw, maybe you can understand why I'm here reminding y'all about it in a derisory tone. That's, like, how sports shit talk works, yaknow?

If *you* and some other ppl weren't in on that? Cool. It's not a comment for you. Fans aren't a monolith, obviously. And I'm fairly certain that on here that shit was championed by the same 'ol group of weirdo GOATic haterzzz who have spent this entire playoffs authoring an epic series of completely unforced errors. But I'm also not gonna dig into that in any real way, because it's a beautiful Sunday in the Mile High and we're 5 wins away from the Larry O'Brien.

Regardless, we ain't gonna act like that sentiment *wasn't* there after game 1 just because it looks fucking stupid as all hell now (which it really, really, REALLY does). Sorry.

These Lakers hadn’t played these Nuggets, and the playoffs showed the Nuggets playing against teams that, quite frankly, weren’t as good as the Lakers. The Nuggets have been great all year. The Lakers have made an incredible run that does shift some weight into the momentum of it all but still the Nuggets are just elite. They have SEVERAL of those dudes every title team wants one of - PLUS Jokic and Murray.

It’s been a fun ride for us, but you know a title team when you see one.

Who? Where? When?

We found an adjustment people thought would give us a chance.

Lakers fans in here have been giving Denver their respect.
Most of us are lamenting our inability to close the gap.
We’ve conceded that Denver is the better team. Hats off.

All we’ve done is look for rays of light and things that could help us actually win these games- and we’ve had plenty of opportunities to do just that.

So yeah, fans are going to look for the positives.

Do you want us to cry or some shit? I feel like you want us to be in misery or some shit.

The media has roasted Lakers for being unable to close the gap.
Jokic and Murray have both gotten their due in the media.

What are you going on about?

which is what OKS is known for.

FOH.

We know what lakers nation was claiming….

Own it.
2791782, Only coming from you.

>which is what OKS is known for.

Not for a while now, not the way you do it.

You’re stuck in a time warp, using outdated algorithms

>We know what lakers nation was claiming….

Yes, that we found something the Lakers could use to an advantage. It largely worked, but that doesn’t mean *everything* we did worked.

There’s other context too- Lebron’s age, his foot.
But that’s how the game goes. Health is part of it.
Denver is just better. And there’s nothing we can do about that.

I know you’re too dedicated to the bit to talk like a rational human being though.
2791790, And Nuggets fans can talk their shit
Posted by DJR, Sun May-21-23 12:11 PM
That ain’t you.

You’re just being pressed and weird.
2791776, We did, unfortunately Jamal found something too…

>Another failed season in LaLa land.

It hurts whenever your team doesn’t win the last game(were you born in 98? honest question)

But if you told most Lakers fans 2 months ago that we’d beat the defending champ Warriors to make conference finals they would’ve thought you were crazy.

Personally I think making it to the Finals and losing to Boston or Miami would’ve been worse.
2791777, This Laker team would beat Miami and Boston imo

Winner of this series is the NBA champ

2791778, What?

Y’all aren’t the Washington Wizards or some mid table org, where you are
just happy to be here.

Y’all are the Lakers where the goal is to win a championship every season,
and y’all are covered more than any other team in the nba

Get that moral victory crap out of here.

2791781, Success has everything to do with expectations

Of course that’s the goal. But context and circumstance matter.
You don’t get to throw that out because it’s inconvenient to your agenda.

>Get that moral victory crap out of here.

Why? Because it doesn’t serve you that this team *over* achieved, even in failure?

That’s a you problem.

Perhaps if you turned off the caricature of a character bullshit for once, you’d understand that.
2791780, This season wasn’t a “failure” by any means
Posted by Cold Truth, Sun May-21-23 10:15 AM
We performed *far* above any reasonable expectation

And *this* iteration of the team is only a few months old, and went to the conference finals.

That’s a win.

We got our asses kicked by a superior team- and still gave them a good fight each time out.

Moral victories can sometimes taste like ashes.

But not this one.

We have reason to love this team and hope for a good showing next year.

Where’s the “failure” apart from not being perfect?

I know you won’t respond because logic and reason are your mortal enemies, but it needs to be said.
2791788, He’s made Bron hate his whole personality.
Posted by Ryan M, Sun May-21-23 11:45 AM
Just stop responding, dude. It’s pointless.

Plus we got ourselves a conference chip according to his logic!
2791805, True

I do enjoy fucking with him, and sometimes fucking with him is just hitting him with the facts.
2791786, Now I will concede..its time to get those brooms ready

when you can barely get the lead AT HOME and Joker struggling on offense.. smh.

2791789, Jamal Murray

Here's your series right here. Murray is absolutely correct that he's not getting any respect because ya'll still in here talking about adjustments on Joker.
