2790616, 2023 NBA Playoffs: Week 5 (CF Preview) Posted by CyrenYoung, Sun May-14-23 11:37 AM
LA continues to defy the odds (as they have all season), one upset at a time.
Next up: Denver.
Murray & the Joker vs 'Bron & AD in a rematch for the WCF.
*On deck for today:
Closing out the semifinals with Miami waiting for the winner of Boston vs Philly game 7.
The pressure to succeed to pretty high for both teams. Who wants it more?
*Ja Morant needs help and it apparently has nothing to do with basketball.

2790617, Did LeBron end the Steph era? Posted by ThaTruth, Sun May-14-23 11:55 AM
Embiid better step up today!
Can the Lakers keep this improbable run going?
I’m over Ja at this point eff that stupid ass dude will probably be out the league soon

2790623, I don't think Steph is done... Posted by CyrenYoung, Sun May-14-23 01:32 PM
..Like other legends before him, Steph has an opportunity to continue. It may evolve into something else, but he has more than enough for serious contention. Its on GSW to recognize and surround him with complimentary players. How they manage that moving forward is anyone's guess.
Embiid & Harden are on the clock, but Tatum & Brown are just as hungry.
At this point, the only thing standing in the way of the Lakers success is apathy. With all due respect to the remaining franchises, no one has an answer for LA when they impose their will.
I won't speculate on Ja or his actions, but this is certainly disappointing. I wish him the best.

2790624, People only seem to want to ask the question in reverse Posted by Vex_id, Sun May-14-23 01:54 PM
All the low-brow hot-take commentary was on "Steph owning LeBron!" -- it was just too juicy for the Rob Parker wing to contemplate - and they badly wanted GSW to win.
But when all the dust settles from the Steph-Bron rivalry, it wasn't all that close from an individual player perspective. LeBron outplayed Steph in every single big moment, and flatly outplayed him individually. The rivalry was *insert LeBron team* versus the Dynasty Dubs. Not LeBron v. Steph.
The only real question was: Could GS amass enough talent stacking to stop LeThanos - as there was no single player on the Warriors (including Steph) who was going to outgun LeBron individually - no matter how cool and elite their niche skillset is.
What's interesting is that LeBron ended the first iteration of the Steph/Klay/Dray dynasty in 2016, when they hired the most high-end offensive sniper assassin (KD) to ensure that they had excess talent. And he may have just ended the post-KD Warrior championship team, or at least put an end to this team as we know it: as running over every team in the West (17-1) when the Big 3 were healthy, with the only conference playoff loss now accounted for by the LeBron Lakers - just like how their only Finals loss (when the big 3 are healthy) is accounted for by the LeBron Cavs.
I think what this series does is put the Steph-Bron "rivalry" in its proper context: as arguably the greatest player ever versus arguably the greatest team ever - and they both got the best of each other at various times in what will go down as dynamic of a rivalry as the league has ever seen - reaching a crescendo during the 2016 title - arguably the most historic title in league history - which caused the 73-win Warriors to actually say: "we actually don't have enough to beat this guy. We need *another* top 10 caliber GOAT"
Steph is in the conversation for greatest PGs of all-time, and rightfully so. It's either him or Magic.
LeBron is in the conversation for greatest player of all-time -- it's either him or MJ.
But to compare Steph to LeBron in terms of GOAT stature is unfair. It's sort of like trying to finesse an argument that Duncan should be mentioned with Jordan re: Rushmore debate.
Their legacies were already etched in stone before this series - this outcome just confirms what most already knew to be true about the rivalry, if they're being honest.

Say what you will about the Warriors, but they do have moves they can make. Packaging Poole, Kuminga, and Moody can get them something. Not sure what picks they’ve got but if they re-sign Dray and retool they can be right back in the mix next year.

The Warriors have been here before. Goofies got their pot shots in then, and the team won the championship the following season.
I don't know how personnel shapes up next season, but the front office has earned the patience, even if things didn't end in a championship this season.

2790782, they have some big decision to make, isn't Myers on his way out? Posted by ThaTruth, Mon May-15-23 12:14 PM

2790794, Myers contract expires at the end of June Posted by mrhood75, Mon May-15-23 12:46 PM
He's been pretty mum about his decision publicly, but the org certainly wants to keep him. And has apparently made him a lucrative offer.
For the last few years, he's been training guys who could replace him down the road, including one of Lacob's kids, Mike Dunleavy, Jr., ZaZa, and on-the-rise Shaun Livingston. Plus, now that Iggy officially retired, he certainly has a place with the team if he wants it.
Personally, I think Myers re-ups, and eventually leaves the team when Curry retires.

wait a second; Zaza as in Zaza Pachulia, the man that intentionally or not ended up injuring Kawhi Leonard during that Spurs/Warriors game years ago and ended up changing the course of history for the Warriors, Spurs, and Raptors all because he wouldn't let Kawhi land after he shot a jumper?
That ZaZa? If you're referring to someone else, my apologies for asking.

Though I disagree with certain parts of the below description, yes, that ZaZa. > >wait a second; Zaza as in Zaza Pachulia, the man that >intentionally or not ended up injuring Kawhi Leonard during >that Spurs/Warriors game years ago and ended up changing the >course of history for the Warriors, Spurs, and Raptors all >because he wouldn't let Kawhi land after he shot a jumper? > >That ZaZa? 2790804, Interesting. Posted by Numba_33, Mon May-15-23 01:11 PM
I will temper my shock and slight anger with that news concerning ZaZa with some props for the Warriors owners if Shaun Livingston will actually get some front office experience as result of Bob Meyers' departure. I'm not a Warriors fan, but it was cool how Livingston was able to contribute to the Warriors teams he was on despite his injury setbacks.
Getting some post-career success would be a good continuation for his NBA career.
I guess you already know how I feel about ZaZa.

I hate to be so negative so early on a Monday morning, but I'm surprised real goons haven't run down on Ja and his squad of idiots yet, assuming they travel to other major cities when Ja is on the road.
The wrong mixture of guns, false bravado on Ja and his crews' perspective, and real boneheaded ignorance from real goons is a potentially dangerous mixture.

To be honest, that front office will have it's hands full to construct that line up. Both Harden and Harris aren't enough support for Embiid IMO.

Depends on what Maxey’s ceiling is, IMO.

2790727, I'm not a huge Sixer's fan, so I could be wrong Posted by Numba_33, Mon May-15-23 07:29 AM
but from what I've seen, I have confidence Maxey will get better as an offensive threat. He knows how to use his speed and his outside shooting if it improves will make him a capable second or third tier scorer in half-court sets, depending on what the Sixers will do in the off-season.
Harden unfortunately left his best years in Houston and especially in the post-season, he's not a dependable second their scoring threat. Perhaps he should look to spread the ball around in half-court sets instead of trying to go old-school Harden and go into iso scoring mode? I dunno.
And I don't even have to waste time on why Tobias Harris isn't a worthwhile and dependable second or third tier scoring threat, especially with his terrible contract.
The Sixers front office will definitely have their hands full this off-season, especially since I believe the clock is ticking on Embiid's body holding up for any possibility of post-season success.

Playing close to 70-75 regular season games to get huge numbers is going to make him suffer come playoff time.

Tremendous insight that only someone on the inside can provide. And if you listen to it, nobody can say he's throwing GS under the bus -- he's just speaking factually - and if anything - is defending the dynasty at length and saying they aren't done winning. Still not sure why people have a problem with his podcast.

2790694, I spent the last 2 months of the season hearing about the reasons Jokic Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Sun May-14-23 07:32 PM
couldn’t win three straight MVPs and they pointed to playoffs and defense.
And now Embiid has 13/5/1 on 4/16 FG in a Game 7 down 26 points through three quarters and getting taken advantage of in space.

He was so good in the bubble. Could be remembering wrong, but that Denver series by Davis was arguably the best basketball anybody played in the entire bubble wasn’t it?
I suspect he can do it again. And the D is a given I think, but sometimes great O beats great D. We’ll see what happens.
I have 100% respect for Jokic, but even given that, it’s a decent possibility that Davis gets the best of him in a series. I hope it happens, obviously.
|
2790716, I'm giving Jokic and Denver all the respect. Posted by Cold Truth, Sun May-14-23 11:41 PM
I won't take anything away from them, nor will I take anything for granted.
I'm not looking to the bubble for insight into today.
Obviously I'm pulling for a win, and I think we have the pieces to get it done. But AD's inconsistent offense can be a serious problem if that trend continues.
I do think his D will show up like it always does, and I want to see how that disrupts Jokic.

Anyone who calls him a variation of Odd Number or whatever isn’t paying attention to his day in and day out defense. This is When Healthy all over again. The dude has his flaws but he has gone above and beyond and is the best 2 way player we’ve had since Kobe. Let’s knock off the Street Clothes bullshit. He’s a damn Laker legend already.

Nah.
When Healthy was a legitimate issue. That they were able to turn it around doesn’t change what the facts where at the time- and the Odd Number thing is largely a fact right today, minus perhaps one aberration.
His offense disappearing is a problem that must be solved.
His defense is elite and he rightly gets HIGH praise for it. But let’s not act like a significant deficiency is above critique, or, in this case, just jokes.
For the record, I fully embrace this team, and everyone on it.
But I don't see any real issue crackin on my own guys for things that they need to improve.

towards the end of the regular season. I couldn't find a news article discussing it, so I gave up on the light web search I did.
Have to wonder how much more disgruntled he's going to get. Not to be too negative, but he has to know even if he demands a trade, the team that trades for him is going to be completely left without assets because of how insanely large his contract is. He's going to have to be content with playing out his days in Portland more than likely. I have to imagine he's smart and insightful enough to know that, baring some gargantuan three or four team trade to minimize how much a team would have to give up during a normal one-on-one team trade.

2790746, the nba has a conduct policy that specifically addresses this. Posted by Reeq, Mon May-15-23 09:16 AM
as does the team.
its not about legality.
missing work isnt illegal. but what happens when you keep missing days?
riding a motorcycle isnt illegal. but stuff like that has been outlawed in contract clauses for a while now too.
the biggest takeaway is that neither ja nor the players union contest any of his punishment. they dont have an issue with it because its well within the cba and warranted.

2790749, Nigga.. do you wave guns on FB lives in your spare time? Posted by legsdiamond, Mon May-15-23 09:25 AM
probably not, and you know why.
No one is saying he can’t legally own a gun.
Waving that shit on camera like a fucking 15 year old is the problem.
He can hunt rabbits, shoot pepsi cans and have a fucking Jason Bourne wall of guns at the crib. He could even do a gun magazine spread of his weapons and love for guns.
What he can’t do is wave that shit around nonchalantly like a 90’s rap video at a club after a game and then follow it up with another video and expect to nit get punished because guns are legal.
|
2790752, Come on now. Posted by Beezo, Mon May-15-23 09:34 AM

Incident after incident over the last few years with him and his crew and all seem to involve guns or threats of violence.

Bucks to Interview ESPN’s Mark Jackson for Head Coaching Position, per Report Story by Daniel Chavkin
The Bucks are expected to interview Mark Jackson for their vacant head coach position, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports.
Jackson spent three seasons as head coach of the Warriors from 2011 to ’14, accumulating a 121-109 record and two playoff appearances. Despite winning 98 games over his last two seasons, Golden State fired Jackson and hired Steve Kerr, who would lead the team to a championship the following season.
When he hasn’t coached, Jackson has worked as an NBA analyst for ESPN since he retired in 2004. Jackson has primarily served on the network’s top broadcasting team with Mike Breen and Jeff Van Gundy. He also has interviewed for several head coach openings since 2014, including his becoming a finalist for the Kings job last year.
Milwaukee is looking for a new coach after firing Mike Budenholzer, who coached the team for five years, including a championship season in 2020-21. The Bucks had a 58-24 record this year, which was the best in the league, but they lost in five games to the No. 8-seed Heat in the first round of the playoffs.

Which was about at the bottom of the list of things that I expected when I went to the show.
Technically he was there with the opening act, Jay Worthy. Worthy brought him up on stage and he did two songs. BD will always get love in the Bay for the We Believe teams, so he got a really good reception.
Davis rapping is apparently tied to this "character"/NFT thing that he's involved with, which seems kinda weird. But I must admit he was actually good enough at rapping. I've certainly heard MUCH worse from NBA players.

It was the second time I've seen him. First was opening up for Action Bronson like in 2018/19. In that case, the crowd was mostly teenage/early 20s Bronson/Fuck That's Delicious fans, since they didn't know what to make of him. This was a much better setting.
>btw: how did "faux basketball sage" LeBron do in game 6? > >(couldn't let that one slide lol)
That was about LB's current persona off-the-court, not on. And his performance on the court doesn't change me thinking he's been extremely corny off of it lately. Which includes his goofy "I KNOW ALL" basketball-related interviews. And his aspiring mogul stuff is probably worse. I liked "Survivor's Remorse" LeBron, but "Space Jam 2"/"House Party" remake LeBron can kick rocks. But as I said earlier, at least he told Elon publically to fuck off.

Yeah, I was very happy with the setlist. He did stuff I wasn't expecting, like Happy Endings, Downtown 81, and Momma's Song (since it was Mother's Day), plus crowd favorites like Fabio and '76. But also, I was hoping to hear Snow & Pop, and he didn't do either. Still an extremely dope show tho.

PG: “There are about 450 of us? It’s a good 75-100. STINKS. Good dudes though.”
Top comment said exactly what I was thinking: this is the NBA 75 I'd be REALLY interested to see. Though sometimes you have to wonder how much of this could be due to circumstances out of a player's control - Andrew Wiggins would have been the No. 1 overall pick for this list by a lot of fans five years ago but he's clearly motivated/invested since joining a stellar basketball atmosphere.

The ones that don't put in the work who expect the PT ... one could argue that maybe that comes with the higher salary + the entitlement of the younger generation, but the rest of what comes with "not loving the game" makes total sense to me
Sure, there is a higher probability that the NBA is a dream job than, say, an accounting firm, but how many of us have gotten by at our jobs by doing the bare minimum? How many of us have had a hobby, monetized it, and lost the love for it? How many have gotten the job we wanted, then realized that it's not all it's cracked up to be (to us)?
Not loving the game isn't exclusive to basketball or even sports, and it's a completely human thing to feel for a myriad of reasons

and have gotten pushback almost every time.
most recently, when Zion was getting flamed for doing windmill dunks before the play-in game.
we want these dudes to be killers like Jordan or Kobe cuz that's how we like to THINK we'd be. A LOT of NBA players aren't that. they just happen to have been talented enough to make it to the league and they love that they can make millions playing a game, but they don't LOVE the game to go out there and live and die for it.
shit, i guarantee some of these dudes NEVER loved the game even as kids, they just liked the attention/girls it got them, or their parents just pushed them into and like most kids they just wanna make their parents happy, but if left to their own devices they would have taken other routes.
that's why i try (not always successfully) to not judge these guys too harshly.

2790868, This is hilarious on so many fronts. Even legal immigrants Posted by allStah, Tue May-16-23 06:11 AM
have said this is bullcrap, because they worked hard and went through all the necessary steps to gain citizenship.
https://youtu.be/by0rDShIImk
You got illegal immigrants demanding citizenship and much more, so they are trying to march and protest, talking about they deserve rights while marching with their national flag, the country that the left! Think about that
Why didn’t you do this in your own god damn country like black folks did since the beginning of slavery? There is no country I can go to and demand focking citizenship just because I snuck into their country. They would throw me in a hole and deport me.
Even legal immigrants our outraged at the action
Why didn’t you fight for rights and services in your own country?….but you come here protesting and fighting and demanding rights, and you’re not a citizen??…
Demanding rights and services that you didn’t pay taxes on..that the American people paid taxes, and to get services over homeless people and low income people???

2790875, It's an understandable mistake Posted by Cold Truth, Tue May-16-23 09:09 AM
The adrenaline rush you get on hating immigrants can easily cloud your judgement.
It's more important to get that fix hating immigrants and get it out there so everyone can see how much you hate immigrants, than it is to make sure you're hating immigrants in the right place.
I totally get how you could make this exact mistake.

2790880, I need you to take that sig down. Posted by allStah, Tue May-16-23 09:45 AM
You took it out of context. That is not my stand. I have a problem with illegal immigrants taking resources from black communities ..and working under the table taking jobs from low income people…
You have some serious serious issues…
You were told before about it but you continue to cross the line. Moderators told you about before when you did it the first time. You should be banned for doing it a second time.
Now take my name out of your sig. you’re no different than the media and you are a complete hack.
You didn’t have to respond at all. It was clearly a posting mistake…you have some serious mental issues

2790896, There’s no rule against quoting you. Posted by Cold Truth, Tue May-16-23 11:20 AM
Last time, it was something I made up.
And I was told VERBATIM:
“Unless you have a link to allstah actually posting those words, I'm gonna need you to remove it from your sig.”
You said it, and it’s a direct quote of a thing you actually said.
I can quote you all day and if you don’t like it, that’s a YOU problem.
And nothing about the shitty things you say has anything to do with my character or my mental health.
Moreover, nobody on OKP has less room to talk than you about anyone having mental health issues.
Go cry to cy some more. If you don’t like people responding to your shitty takes on things, keep it to yourself.

2790902, You are really really a nutcase in so many forms. It’s beyond Posted by allStah, Tue May-16-23 11:50 AM
me. I don’t even talk to you or post to you.
I accidentally posted in GD and you took it and turned it into something perverse
And that wasn’t the total quote. You took it out context.
I said I am against illegal immigrants who take resources and jobs at the expense of the black community… so your quote was used to push your narrative. You cut it in half. And that illustrates how dark an evil you are as a human being.
And the argument isn’t about immigrants being treated like human beings, it was in regards to resources and services of the community…something else that you twisted for your own agenda. Proves how much of a lunatic you are.
You’re out there beyond anything humane.
That’s a wrap. You will not get another respond from me…do as you wish. You will be talking to yourself.

based on what?
earlier someone posted about home many game 7's he's lost but who's coached in as many game 7's?

2790901, c'mon dog, he's set records for failing. Posted by PROMO, Tue May-16-23 11:49 AM
sure, fine, if you wanna cape you can argue that he's gotten to mad game 7's or whatever.
he's failed majorly at multiple stops around the league.
and i get it, you have to fail to succeed. his resume is not that type of situation. he's been in too many situations where he had no business losing and did.
why are you looking to me about it tho. Sheed spoke on it. you should trust his word way more than mine.

2790903, Wonder who the replacement will be. Posted by Numba_33, Tue May-16-23 11:53 AM
Given that it appears the Sixers are in a title or bust mode, I'm going to assume Budenholzer or Nick Nurse will be the preferred hires since they've won titles.
I suppose the next agenda that Philly front office is going to have to resolve is what to do with Harden. That's a pretty monumental domino left to fall as I wonder what Philly's contingency plan will be if Harden bounces.
I know this isn't likely to happen, but it would be comical if Harden chucks deuces to another team and Kyrie swoops in the team up with Embiid. I have to admit I know that's next to nil in terms of probability because I'm assuming Kyrie is going to be looking for a near max four year deal and I highly doubt the Sixers front office will be that desperate.
|
2790906, i think Coach Bud or Nurse are the two most likely as well. Posted by PROMO, Tue May-16-23 12:02 PM
as far as Kryie? i think they are all in with Maxey going forward, and Kryie would stymie that.
|
2790930, d'antoni said he still wants to coach Posted by bearfield, Tue May-16-23 01:27 PM
he's a good "player coach," has a great relationship with harden & morey, and he's coached and schemed two legendary offenses (7 seconds suns and 2016-2019 rockets.) seems like a good fit and would probably keep harden from leaving. that said, 2023 harden isn't 2016-2019 harden so they would probably organize the entire offense around embiid. move tobias harris, get some more shooters, have embiid work on passing out of the double team during the offseason, and they're right back in the mix
|
2790937, Tobias Harris makes close to $40 million next year Posted by Numba_33, Tue May-16-23 01:49 PM
If the Sixers manage to move him without having to strip themselves of too many draft picks, I'll be very very impressed.
I'm not a huge believer in D'Antoni as I have vague suppressed memories of him failing while coaching the Knicks, but he'd could try his seven seconds of less nonsense with Maxey since he is a speed demon. I dunno how much that would fit with Embiid, especially since I think it's time for him to load manage during the regular season if serious about wanting to sniff a ring. Running up and down the court to grind his knees to dust under a D'Antoni system would be too taxing for Embiid IMO.

2790892, Excited for this series. Nuggets in 6. Posted by khn, Tue May-16-23 11:07 AM
If this really is the year, it’s only right that we finally overcome our WCF tormentors en route.
Both teams are in fine form, but neither have played any team remotely as good as each other yet. They’ve also not really played each other post-trade deadline iirc. So no one really knows anything.
AD vs. Jokic should be great, and will probably decide the series. I’m going with my guy to win that matchup. But it should be close.
Apart from that I think our overall talent level and HCA wins out. But I expect it to be extremely competitive. AG needs to make James work. Murray has to dominate his matchup with Russell and MPJ needs to consistently be there.
LFG.

2790900, This WCF ride has been fun as hell. Posted by Ryan M, Tue May-16-23 11:47 AM
I've said since the team started gelling in like early March or so that the ceiling was the Finals and that that's totally okay. Everything would have to break right, etc.
Well, it has. Which has been something so damn fun to watch and experience. It's been quite awhile since the Lakers exceeded expectations rather than simply meeting them (or outright disappointing, of course).
This Nuggets team is a force though. AD/Jokic will be fun to watch but Jokic is better, smarter, and stronger than the last time they played each other in a series. Though - AD is a better defender, too. I think we're going to regret only having a hobbled Mo Bamba and Tristan Thompson to back up AD - especially given that Dwight and Javale were the ones who gave Jokic hell in the bubble.
Ultimately - I'm having a hard time seeing the Lakers take this series...but I didn't have a ton of hope before the last 2 series started either. They take one of the first 2 and they either win in 6 or lose in 7. If they DON'T take one of the first 2, the series could still extend of course but I don't see them winning in Denver after that. So, as per usual...splitting is so damn important.
Denver's role players have been really great. KCP is going to give Reaves some serious work. MPJ isn't Steph or Klay but he's going to see a lot of open shots.
It'll either be a fun ass series or Jokic is just going to dismantle these dudes. We'll see.
|
2790909, I don’t see how anyone can root against this tea Posted by Cold Truth, Tue May-16-23 12:13 PM
Everything about this team is fun to watch.
They play together. They play for one another. Nobody sulks due to lack of PT. They’re an excellent defensive team.
The only real rumblings of negativity I’ve seen from people who aren’t complete malcontents, are complaints about their free throw disparities.
But that’s largely due to the style they play. Getting to the line is part of the formula.
It’s an old school, workmanlike, hard hat style offense.
Jokes and deficiencies aside, what’s not to love?
|
2790916, Generational hate against the Lakers, lol Posted by Ryan M, Tue May-16-23 12:41 PM
But yeah - I mean, I kinda feel the same way about the Celtics. They're not very hatable at all. In fact, all the hatable teams are out. For casual fans, I assume this is a pretty fun final 4 to have.
The Lakers and Lebron are polarizing.
But not THESE Lakers or THIS Lebron. Which is pretty fun. You'd have to be a curmudgeon to hate on stories like Austin Reaves, Dennis' resurgence/redemption (in some ways, similar to Dwight!), and of course Lonnie Walker.

2790928, If they play like they did the last 5 quarters, yeah Posted by pretentious username, Tue May-16-23 01:25 PM
>seems that's everything I hear...why?
This team has had ups and downs in the playoffs in a way that they sorta didn’t in the reg. season, so I’m not feeling as confident as I was a month ago. That being said, I still think they’re the most complete team and have to be considered the favorites. Plus I’m much more confident in Tatum and in Mazzula’s ability to make adjustments than I was a few days ago. I (choose to) believe that the end of the Sixers series is the turnaround we were looking for and we stay this hot for another few weeks.
|
2790929, i don't see how they lose. Posted by PROMO, Tue May-16-23 01:27 PM

Miami taking 2 games would be impressive to me.
|
2790932, Miami makes me nervous, but they shouldn’t Posted by BNueve, Tue May-16-23 01:38 PM

|
2790934, If the Celts constantly allow for open Heat three pointers Posted by Numba_33, Tue May-16-23 01:43 PM
they'll defeat themselves. In theory, Timelord and Horford should be able to bottle up Bam enough to where he won't kill them one-on-one in the paint.
This should go six max as I'm assuming they will be a game or two where Tatum and/or Jaylen Brown will be cold. I'm also going to assume the Heat will look to blitz Tatum to get the ball out of his hands, which could play into the Celtics hands as they normally launch of ton of threes.
