I imagine dude is going to go away for a while. On-air apology or not.
2789350, Freudian Slip.
Posted by allStah, Sat May-06-23 06:36 PM
He was subconsciously thinking it, and that’s why it came out.

To go from negro to the n-word isn’t some slippage of the tongue,
and even his colleague just went along with it.

2789352, What's especially damning to me...
Posted by Buck, Sat May-06-23 07:33 PM
...is that the term "Negro Leagues," to a lifelong baseball fan, is an idiom, a stock phrase that you learn when you're learning about Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson et al. The words are inextricably linked, like they're all one word - "negroleagues" - so much so that if you played word association with me, "league" would invariably be my first response to "negro." Not even sure what my second choice would be.

Which means that someone like Kuiper would have had to deliberately divorce those words from each other in his mind, break that idiom apart. That's no slip; that's work. Damn.
2789381, Well said

2789429, as if the two words don't sound anything alike
Posted by fif, Sun May-07-23 02:12 AM
smh. they are both "forbidden" words. one is used pretty much ONLY in this context, both otherwise stay on the do-not-say list. so neither exactly rolls off the tongue for a guy who talks publicly for a living. i'll add out that "ih" is a much lower effort phoneme than "eeh" and "er" is easier to say than "oh". try it and see how much your mouth has to move for both.

imo, this is an absurd reason for someone to lose their job (if that happens). i have no idea how often he has said the word in his life prior to this and neither does anyone else in this thread. this is not someone screaming slurs on twitch, it's clearly a mistake. the idea that you can read his soul from this is stupid.

i know nothing about the guy. is there any prior evidence of him being racist?
2789431, Wrong…

For someone that talks about professional baseball for a living he’s probably talked about the Negro Leagues multiple times.

With the ease that he said the other word it’s obvious that it’s not new to his vocabulary either.

He should definitely lose his job. The Oakland A’s are a wrap anyway I doubt if that dude was going to Vegas.
2789434, agreed on this part

> the idea that you can read his soul

Making sweeping generalizations based on intonation is silly. All we know is this one incident. But IMO the incident was so completely offensive and inexplicable that it warrants firing.

If the word just came out wrong then why wouldn't he immediately have corrected himself and apologized?

Was he drunk or impaired in some way?

Best case (and most unlikely) scenario is that he's just wildly incompetent in which case having him as the voice of a MLB team and tv station in a live televised broadcast poses an enormous risk. Not like there aren't hundreds of other capable up and coming announcers out there who would jump at the chance for that gig. And who could figure out a way to make it through a telecast without using the N word. Next.
2789468, read his soul? He fucked up ON THE JOB

everytime someone gets outed in public for using a racial slur while drunk, or someone has a slip of the tongue on air. I think to myself I can count on no hands how many times I've accidentally or intentionally used these words. It's never slipped out when im angry or drunk. I've been both so many fucking times. It doesn't happen because I don't use it in my private or public life. But I do remember letting a shit slip out in front of my mom when I was in 4th grade, because I was using shit at school all the time.

my KC BBQ rankings from my visits last year

1. Q39 (sidenote: they had the best wings i have ever had in my life)
2. Jack Stack
3. Gates
4. ABs

there were a few more spots i wanted to check out this year but I dont have KC in my work territory anymore
2789979, i live in kc

q39
gates
joe's kc
jack stack
abs
and tons of others

none are bad
depends on what you like
my family grew up on gates

2790014, we got some, and they were obviously the best ive ever had
Posted by cgonz00cc, Wed May-10-23 06:33 PM
BUT we didnt get them anywhere else in town

they were good enough that i absolutely
believe you, but i dont have any points of comparison
2789990, I was there in the early 90’s I don’t think Q39 was around

2790002, beef and a half?

2789986, i liked Gates for sandwiches, but ABs for ribs/sauce/fries

2789812, suspended indefinitely

which means he is fired or he has to hit up rehab

2789835, FOH with that spin bullshit they do for racists...
Posted by CyrenYoung, Tue May-09-23 11:02 AM
..any HINT of an allegation while Black and your career is in serious jeopardy (if not over).

White racist says some racists shit ON AIR (with absolutely NO REACTION by their on-air counterpart) and they get "suspended indefinitely."

Bottom line: you get the benefit of the doubt (even when its blatant) when you're white.

Fuck anyone making excuses for this shit.

Is that not a thing anymore, or did the producer miss it? Or did he just say screw it and let it through?

>Is that not a thing anymore, or did the producer miss it? Or
>did he just say screw it and let it through?
2789997, I honestly doubt that producers ever noticed.
Posted by mrhood75, Wed May-10-23 02:31 PM
Knowing how live TV works and how much of a circus the control room can be, where everything is about hitting marks and staying on schedule, it likely went over everyone's head. That's also likely why Braden didn't react at all while standing next to him: he had someone chattering in his earpiece the entire time. Kuiper could have been talking about engaging in a cocaine-fueled orgy the previous evening (which would have been preferable to what he actually said), and as long as he said in a measured tone with a regular cadence and didn't go over-time, nobody there would have reacted.

The producers probably found out about it when everyone else did: When someone posted a clip on Twitter.
2790199, Makes sense.
Posted by Buck, Thu May-11-23 04:14 PM
And Braden did say that was the case, a couple days later, that he wasn't even paying attention when it happened.
2791940, Kuiper formally terminated
