2776660, WC 2022 Group Stage Week 1 Posted by benny, Mon Nov-21-22 10:01 AM
England romping over Iran in as much of a snoozefest a 6-1 game can be
|
2776662, a Carlos Queiroz team scoring two goals, what an upset Posted by benny, Mon Nov-21-22 10:12 AM
|
2776670, Holland looks like these players have never played together Posted by cgonz00cc, Mon Nov-21-22 11:12 AM
they are loosely organized in the way you would think 11 professional footballers could make it work in a pinch, but there appears to be no real plan
|
2776674, Berghuis as a central midfielder aint doin it for me Posted by cgonz00cc, Mon Nov-21-22 11:46 AM
and i dont understand the point of this asymmetrical 532. a central position is definitely in Gakpo's future as he develops, but they are only using half the field in possession. Blind's existence was justified before the tournament by the idea that he was going to tuck inside and combine with Gakpo on that wing. instead he's just standing around and Gakpo is fruitlessly running into very narrow channels.
if someone with a better tactical understanding could explain this, i would be very appreciative
|
2776675, Yeah. obviously fortunate Mane isn’t fit too Posted by dillinjah, Mon Nov-21-22 12:20 PM

2776676, Weah in place of Aaronson. Ream in as expected. Sarge up front. Posted by magilla vanilla, Mon Nov-21-22 12:40 PM
I dig it!
Turner; Dest, Zimmerman, Ream, Robinson; Adams, Musah, McKennie; Weah, Sargent, Pulisic

2776691, smh @ Tuchel and Potter being idiots and neutering Pulisic Posted by RandomFact, Mon Nov-21-22 02:52 PM
in favor of a bunch of pressing merchants.
play the player in his best position and let him build some confidence with multiple starts in a row and you have a borderline world class talent.
|
2776694, oddly enough Posted by cgonz00cc, Mon Nov-21-22 02:58 PM
Pulisic's experience at wingback has them confident to let Jedi get wayyyy up the field while Pulisic drops deeper into the LB zone
thats interesting, and seems like the kind of thing that could create a Wales bust
|
2776696, and Tuchel won 3 titles with that philosophy and formation. Posted by allStah, Mon Nov-21-22 03:09 PM
You’re a focking Pulisic stan. That’s all you are. You’re not a Chelsea fan. You’re the Vex ID of soccer….
FOH.
I can’t wait til he is moved so you can follow some other club.
|
2776698, HAHA. FUCK CHELSEA. #FREEPULISIC Posted by PROMO, Mon Nov-21-22 03:13 PM
|
2776706, the philosophy was timid and clearly unsustainable Posted by RandomFact, Mon Nov-21-22 04:02 PM
a sole focus on possession and defense while trying to scrap your ways to ugly goals is not a recipe for sustained success for a top club.
|
2776722, I’m not sure what games you were watching in 2021 Posted by allStah, Mon Nov-21-22 04:45 PM
but it sure as hell weren’t Chelsea matches.
Chelsea had many offensive games last season…
and now you hate Potter, because he also knows Pulisic is overrated.
That’s all you care about is Pulisic.
It’s about winning trophies at the bridge!

2776703, since Tab Ramos got his face smashed in 28 years ago Posted by cgonz00cc, Mon Nov-21-22 03:33 PM
its been open season on Americans ever since
that absurd Italy match in 06, Altidore getting his ass beat all thru 2010, this Mepham clown getting repeated verbal warnings
it never ends

2776704, Bale doing jack shit then scoring in the 82nd, classic stuff Posted by benny, Mon Nov-21-22 03:43 PM
good second half so far, Wales using Moore's big frame to good effect
|
2776705, typical USMNT game under Berhalter. Posted by PROMO, Mon Nov-21-22 03:58 PM
way too conservative, especially with a lead.
but hey, he's wearing A Ma Maniere Jordan 4's!
|
2776709, Right. Fact that Reyna didn't play was interesting Posted by dillinjah, Mon Nov-21-22 04:10 PM
Unless he's not fit (which wouldn't be a surprise), he needs to be out there
|
2776711, this isn't the 90s USMNT. Posted by PROMO, Mon Nov-21-22 04:13 PM
you have enough good players to go take the game.
you don't have to just sit back and do nothing an hope the lead holds, which is Berhalters m.o.
he's such a bum ass manager.
|
2776713, i dunno. wales went big and direct and we struggled Posted by RandomFact, Mon Nov-21-22 04:18 PM
we don't exactly have tall and elite physical specimens playing in central defense. it was terrifying every time the ball went into the box.
i don't feel like we sat back and wanted to absorb that pressure. it just kinda happened as wales grew in confidence on the ball.
|
2776717, i disagree about that last part, but Moore definitely added... Posted by PROMO, Mon Nov-21-22 04:30 PM
something to them.

this reminds me, gonna start flooding the soccer posts with LONG Serie A swipes from every Futbol source on the internet. just because it gives you nosebleeds and your shitty phone cant handle it.

2776729, This is the last stand for Belgium’s golden generation. Posted by allStah, Mon Nov-21-22 06:07 PM
They came so close in the last WC, finishing in third place, but now a lot of those players are winding down and are in their twilight. Plus they will be without Lukaku for the first two matches, so Mitchy will get the start.
The one bright spot for them is Lois Openda, a rising, young striker who is very elusive and can strike with speed and power. …will this be his coming out?
We shall see.
I would love for Hazard to close his career with a WC trophy…He has won everything else.
|
2776830, Pathetic start. Your boy hazard has no business being out there Posted by dillinjah, Wed Nov-23-22 03:44 PM

2776749, I’m not sure who has the best backcourt in the league.. Posted by allStah, Mon Nov-21-22 08:30 PM
But Garland / Mitchell vs Young/ Murray is a straight up battle at the moment….
|
2776751, idk how this team keeps england from scoring 3 or 4 Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Nov-21-22 08:56 PM
or otoh idk how we threaten england
we have a lot of players that fit an ideal attacking archetype but physically they are all unremarkable, on top of being 2nd or 3rd tier technically
say a prayer for Dest cause Rashford and Saka are about to take liberties w/ him
|
2776752, yeah, dest looked bad. might consider Yedlin TBH Posted by dillinjah, Mon Nov-21-22 09:16 PM
>or otoh idk how we threaten england > >we have a lot of players that fit an ideal attacking archetype >but physically they are all unremarkable, on top of being 2nd >or 3rd tier technically > >say a prayer for Dest cause Rashford and Saka are about to >take liberties w/ him
|
2776756, you can't start dest against england Posted by RandomFact, Mon Nov-21-22 11:00 PM
you also got to get gio on the field if healthy. a pure striker ain't gonna mean shit vs england with minimal possession. have him as a false 9 and pray the innate skillets between puli/weah/gio figure something out. if gio isn't ready throw aaronson in there instead. maybe go to a 442. i dunno.
if the defense can somehow hold up i would want my most talented attacking players on the field to give us the best chance to squeeze something out of this.
|
2776755, They are going to have to play for the draw, and bang away goals Posted by allStah, Mon Nov-21-22 10:49 PM
against Iran. Wales will lose against England, unless they do some UK collusion against America, and allow Wales to draw…. I can actually see that.
If they try to run with the three lions, they will get murked.
|
2776760, So did anyone watch Argentina? Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Tue Nov-22-22 08:03 AM

2776780, Is he though? Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Nov-22-22 02:23 PM
I mean, he's obviously on of the all time greats... but his Man U career was before he peaked and then after his peak. He won a Champions League with them, scored in the final (and also missed his pen), so he's obviously got a place in club history... but Man U goat? Idk.
|
2776786, he won the BDO w/ us. the line starts behind him Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Tue Nov-22-22 03:45 PM

2776794, Definitely the highest peak of anyone I've seen there. Posted by khn, Tue Nov-22-22 06:09 PM
I'd argue guys like Scholes, Keane or Giggs probably accomplished a little more at the club over a longer period of time.
Which is ironic considering he accomplished so much more at Madrid, and yet he doesn't feel like their GOAT to me at all (but you could certainly argue it).
|
2776776, whats the idea behind Zielinski up front? Posted by cgonz00cc, Tue Nov-22-22 01:06 PM

why move him so far away from the ball and put Milik on the bench?

2776792, Mbappe & Dembele against continental fullbacks is cruel Posted by khn, Tue Nov-22-22 05:35 PM

2776801, no doubt, and tbf Oz was pretty dreadful Posted by benny, Tue Nov-22-22 08:55 PM

that penalty they gave up was his fault. Terrible decision to tackle. I saw another play where he came out too far to punch a ball, and that almost led to a goal too...but yea he stepped up in the 2H

2776831, Wish we could have got a draw at least. Posted by upUPNorth, Wed Nov-23-22 03:58 PM
We were lively, and that first half was mostly ours, couldn't do anything in the final third and then let them get that goal over the top right before half-time. The pen is unfortunate, but felt like we could have gotten more out of the game otherwise with better decisions in the box.
Still, feels like we could do something in the group, but don't really know what this says for us against Morocco/Croatia, didn't see their morning draw, and doubt it will be the same kind of games as this one.

2776901, Someone other than Pulisic needs to take corners Posted by jrocc, Fri Nov-25-22 05:48 PM
I get why he's the one taking them but I feel like every single corner kick and free kick was the same thing over and over. I feel like they should let somebody else do a couple of them just to at least get some different looks.
If Gio isn't going to start he should at least come on sooner than he did today.
Otherwise I think it was good.

2776902, someone other than pulisic needs to do a lot of things on this team Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Nov-25-22 05:50 PM
they need to dead this marketing push for him he is just a guy out there. it'd be good for both him and us if he was treated like that.

2776910, couldn't even get excited about winning a corner Posted by will_5198, Fri Nov-25-22 06:28 PM
because you knew it was going nowhere
I thought the US was supposed to be good at set pieces

I guess im the dissenting voice here, but most of his corners were well placed in the 6 yard box...there was just nobody at the end of them. A lot better than some corners Ive seen this cup.
Im not a Pulisic stan by any stretch, but thats one thing i thought he did well and gave the US chances at

2776948, I’m a casual fan that really only pays attention every 4 years… Posted by ThaTruth, Sat Nov-26-22 12:19 PM
and I had never head of dude until a few days ago they were hyping him up on tv as the “face” of this current team but yesterday I didn’t see him do 1 thing special.
If that’s our best I don’t see us going very far at all.
|
2776949, Think he actually played really well. Posted by Buck, Sat Nov-26-22 12:36 PM
Gave Trippier all kinds of trouble, was dangerous both on the cross and the dribble, and had McKennie been not so wildly off target, would have had at least an assist.
He doesn't dominate games, but he creates a ton of offense.

2776905, I can't believe we're letting Berhalter waste some of our best years. Posted by PROMO, Fri Nov-25-22 06:04 PM
ugh.
|
2776926, Why? He’s playing them exactly the way they should be playing in a tournament Posted by magilla vanilla, Sat Nov-26-22 12:14 AM
It’s not his fault our current center forward crop is less than inspiring. And that said, Sargent and Wright did well as far as hold up play and occupying the opposition’s center halves.
Yes, Reyna should have more time in an ideal world. But even when he’s saying to the press he’s good to go he was admitting he still had some tightness. So managing his minutes makes sense.
I certainly prefer him to someone like Bruce Arena, who stuck with his favorites for far too long in both his stints in charge.

2776927, total clown coach Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Sat Nov-26-22 12:19 AM
sadly we are stuck w/ him until the next cup for sure

2776939, Might reserve judgment until after Iran. Posted by Buck, Sat Nov-26-22 10:57 AM
Wales was a letdown, but I had no problems with yesterday. Now I'd like to see what it looks like in a must-win against an inferior squad.

2776925, also as a NY Red Bull fan Posted by jrocc, Fri Nov-25-22 11:36 PM
shout out to my boys Tyler Adams and Tim Ream. Tyler playing like this his 3rd WC. couldn't be prouder unless Aaron Long gets into the game at some point (not holding my breath).

2777074, Been wondering if the winter schedule has a leveling effect. Posted by Buck, Sun Nov-27-22 12:51 PM
Maybe especially on the big countries, where nearly every player is on some top Euro club and thus has to suddenly switch gears from club to country, whereas in the summer, with the season over and a short break before the tourney start, he has time to sort of switch gears, do more training with the country squad.
And presumably smaller countries might be less affected, especially if their players aren't involved in club international comps, like CL and Europa.
Or at least the schedule seems to be introducing a level of unpredictability.
But I've done absolutely no research, so maybe not.

2777062, Damn shame Japan lost earlier today Posted by dillinjah, Sun Nov-27-22 11:18 AM

2777075, Japan has a similar pattern to their performances last WC Posted by upUPNorth, Sun Nov-27-22 12:55 PM
seemed to alternate disappointing ones with seemingly transcendent ones. They'll have to hope they can keep that pattern going against Spain.

2777076, Well, Fuck Croatia... Posted by upUPNorth, Sun Nov-27-22 01:06 PM
I've always liked their team so was disappointed Canada was in their Group. We made them earn it (felt like we let Belgium get away with that goal), which they unfortunately came out and did. Hopefully they can at least carry that momentum and beat Belgium and go out of the group with Morocco, and I can continue being amused at Belgium's rankings.
It was amusing seeing Modric being the main one trying to piss us off and get under out skin at times. Our keeper getting booed because he has history with a top Serbian club, I feel like that's happened before but this was our first match against them.
Our defense can get scrappy, which might seem to work in Concacaf sometimes, but we probably need to learn how defend these top countries in the next four years. Hopefully this group can keep growing together and be more ready for that second chance.

2777228, RE: Well, Fuck Croatia... Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Mon Nov-28-22 03:42 PM
The defense Canada played from 30 mi utes on was some of the worst I’ve seen at the cup level. It felt like they were an auto bid team that had no business in the cup ( cough Qatar) when they won concacaf

2777203, why did they take the Brazil goal away? Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Nov-28-22 12:25 PM
