last year's team was going south before the tournament. struggled against Vandy in the SEC tournament opener and got stoned by Tennessee. they peaked in that Kansas win -- not sure what they showed over the last month in the season to make one think they would win two in a row against Purdue and UNC.

Cal is a HOF coach but there is a clear downward trend now. 10 years ago it was reaching the Final Four and national title games. 5-6 years ago it was Elite Eight. the past two years it's been missing the tournament and getting knocked out in the first round.
