2764933, College transfer portal has gotten out of hand ( Grambling State).

The situation at Grambling State is beyond despicable and disheartening.

Newly appointed volleyball coach Chelsey Lucas cut Grambling’s entire volleyball roster. All 19 players have been released from the team, and their tuition and
room and board will no longer be supported by the university. Now, those athletes
have to figure out how they are going to pay for school, or if they can even
continue to attend school

The coach, nor the athletic director gave a press conference in regards to
releasing of players. They simply released a statement stating that the players
didn’t meet the necessary performance standards during the 3 tryout sessions.
Yes, the entire team of scholarship players had to RE-TRYOUT.

I have no idea who Chelsey Lucas is, but after seeing several pictures of her,
it’s hard not to imagine her personality being a CERTAIN WAY.

Technically, her actions are legal and within the rules of the NCAA. But this doesn’t
happen if the transfer portal rule didn’t allow students athletes a one-time opportunity
to instantly transfer to another university. Apparently, there are several players who
will be transferring into Grambling’s volleyball program.

Of course there was pushback from the community, and they want the coach to be removed and the players’ scholarships to be reinstated. So the university has hired
an independent service to investigate the matter, which is a bad look for the
university, because they were originally okay with the actions of the coach.

Other then teams being banned or players being expelled for disciplinary reasons,
I can’t recall a university cutting an entire roster of players because the coach felt
the players were subpar.

This is insane.

2764935, huh?

while this story isn’t new I’m confused by the post title and how her photos make her personality a certain way?

I’m not interested in your answer

just thinking out loud
2764936, She looks difficult to deal with. That’s what I meant

by feeling a certain way. So I wasn’t surprised by the some of the athletes’
statements in regards to her not really talking to them.

The transfer portal rule allows players who have transferred to be immediately
available to play. Players no longer have to sit out a season after transferring to
a university. They are eligible to play within the same transfer year.

She wouldn’t have been able to cut the entire roster if she didn’t have players
transferring in. This situation is a result of that.

We always see the rule being manipulated on the athlete’s end, but here is a situation
where it is being manipulated on the coach’s end
2764937, Really??? Wow...

I honestly have no idea how you would get that from her appearance in terms of looking at a few pics. But damn if this isn't the perfect example of what Black women have to deal with in sports, the corporate world, the educational system, and life in general. Wow...
2764938, Holy shit, I hope you aren’t in a position…

where you have influence over a woman getting a job/promotion or anything else. You really standing on “looks difficult to deal with”? Yikes.
2764939, No. It’s not a women thing or man thing.

You’ve never looked at a picture of someone after hearing
negative things about them, and thinking that person might possibly
be difficult to deal with?

Based on the commentary of the players, and seeing pictures of the coach in
action, I can’t help but to get that vibe.
2764941, well, if you hear negative things BEFORE seeing the photo..
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue May-10-22 02:14 PM
nah forget it.
2764945, I feel you, but I think it’s a natural instinct of human beings

in certain situations. I’ve been a manger and supervisor before, and I’ve always kept things professional. But I have had PERSONAL opinions of people. I think we all do.

I can separate professional opinions from personal opinions. There is a difference.

I have hired and supervised people who I wouldn’t dare socialize with in person, but
I would work with and manage them all day long without prejudice.

2764956, What about her appearance specifically looks difficult to deal with?

2764940, Grambling’s athletic director basically admitted to taking advantage
Posted by allStah, Tue May-10-22 02:08 PM
of the rule. And he was pretty cutthroat about it.

"Just as the transfer portal empowers student-athletes," Scott said in a statement, "our coaches are also empowered to make the decisions they deem necessary to advance their programs."

Grambling State athletic communications director Brian Howard also supported Lucas' decision despite saying he was unaware it was coming. He explained it makes sense from a numbers perspective because 14 or 15 "quality" players may be joining the team soon, leaving little room for returners.

He didn't exactly sugarcoat that message, though.

"I hate to say out with the old, but in with the new a little bit," Howard said. "Obviously we don't want them to be cut or lose their scholarships or whatever that might be or whatever that might look like. At the end of the day, Coach Lucas has a goal, has a vision. We have a goal as an institution and a vision as well to win, and that's first and foremost."

2764942, Risking it all over the volleyball team?
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue May-10-22 02:16 PM
Either these 2 have something going on or this man is trying his damndest to get it started

sometimes I wonder how people get these jobs and make these moves and KEEP their jobs.
2764946, EXACTLY!!! This kills credibility for all of their sports

recruiting if the athletic department is cool with it. If the football coach is in a living room on a recruiting visit, and some star defensive lineman is trying to decide what school he'll go to, knowing that Grambling is fine with just cutting a student athlete's scholarship at will is enough to move the needle towards another school...
2764955, This is why it obviously has nothing to do with the portal, lol.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue May-10-22 04:41 PM
Because every school in America and every player in America has access to the portal. And yet, absolutely none of the schools do this, because it's so obviously going to be a public relations-- and recruiting-- nightmare, lol.
2764957, it does have to do with the portal, because if the rule didn’t exist
Posted by allStah, Tue May-10-22 05:00 PM
she wouldn’t have been able to cut those players all at once. She would have been
without a team. So she would have been forced to stick with them.

So we could see SIMILAR situations like this down the road. That rule was just put in
place because of the pandemic.

The god damn AD just said, hey just like players are empowered by the
transfer portal so are coaches. We always here about players using the
transfer portal to go somewhere else because they are unhappy. But here
we have a coach who is unhappy with all 19 players so she is bringing in new
players via the portal. This is unprecedented.

The fact that she can cut 19 players all at once to transfer in
19 players all at once ( same season) , is an example of how the transfer
portal can be used in an unethical way ( even though it’s legal) by both players
and coaches

2764963, If a student stabs a teacher with a pencil…
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue May-10-22 06:05 PM
… you seem like the sort of dude who says “this is why students shouldn’t have pencils.”
2764976, This isn’t even in the same ballpark as that.

Name me another time in the history of the NCAA, prior to the transfer portal rule
change, where a coach cut the entire roster, and then transferred in new players
within the same season?

You can’t. It was impossible, because the transfer rule required the player who was
transferring to sit out the upcoming college season before being able to play for his
new college team.

So this Grambling situation illustrates how coaches can take advantage of the rule,
just like college players are taking advantage of it. We already have kids attempting
to leave school because they are not happy with their NIL revenue, and now we have this Grambling matter.

What’s next? Who knows.
