2761739, England v US. Interesting. I'll take that over the other choices.

gonna go ahead and assume a draw against england will be crucial.
2761742, Damn. Sure hope not.
Posted by Buck, Fri Apr-01-22 12:34 PM
>gonna go ahead and assume a draw against england will be
>crucial.

Because I'd assume that England will shred the US. Also assume that the US can handle Iran and probably get the job done against whichever playoff winner. And if not, then they don't deserve to move on....
2761746, we're talking about a team that finished third in CONCACAF
Posted by RandomFact, Fri Apr-01-22 01:00 PM
IF fully healthy they are intriguing on paper.

I just don't trust their MLS lifer manager.
2761754, Yeah, well, that's why I think wins v. Iran and whoever....
Posted by Buck, Fri Apr-01-22 02:09 PM

2761757, England in game 1 or 3 would be ideal cause they will play conservative

2761756, group of death is a thing of the past
Posted by benny, Fri Apr-01-22 02:37 PM
FIFA and UEFA have clearly shown they want more and more teams involved in these competitions, and with the way these instances are set up, it makes sense that more countries would support an agenda that gets them in the draw. This can only dilute the group stages, and in fact a friend of mine is pointing out that even the Round of 16 won't feel like a massive game in most cases, with the real deal starting in the Quarters. I support a so-called big team (and better football in general) so of course I'd be annoyed about it, but this is the way things are going and there's not too much that can be done about it
2761747, GROUPS:

the European charge is over. Looks like another summer of regenerating starting with locking down Coutinho and spending way too much on a holding midfielder(unless Nakamba continues to look like prime Vieira under Gerrard when he gets back-- and yes, I know that's the fourth summer running. That's what happens when you take over from a clown car and have jumped up 28-30 league positions in three years)
2761804, This is why I hate international breaks.
Posted by allStah, Sat Apr-02-22 11:51 AM
It kills club chemistry. Players who report for national team duty come back
fatigued, and players who are inactive come back a little rusty.

Chelsea were all over the place against a bottom dweller.

Thank the mighty skylord that the season is almost over with.

Let’s wrap up the season by winning the CL.

Villa doing its yearly middle table clinch! Sup, Magilla

2761959, Barça up to second in the table!
Posted by Hitokiri, Mon Apr-04-22 12:26 PM
And with a game in hand. I don't think anyone saw this coming when Xavi took over. We were in 9th at that point. Currently 14 games unbeaten, the longest streak in Europe right now. If Madrid hits a bad spell, we could even catch them. Not betting on that happening, but a few months ago, it was outside the realm of possibility. Now, it's unlikely, but not unthinkable.

And Pedri's goal yesterday was a thing of beauty.
Pedri Potter indeed.
2761980, Nope. Real Madrid will win. Sorry.

2762057, Cool. I see that you understand the situation.
Posted by allStah, Mon Apr-04-22 11:05 PM

Also, I said 4th or 3rd.
2762066, Where is Chelsea in EPL table?
Posted by Hitokiri, Mon Apr-04-22 11:56 PM
2762067, Look, good bro.
Posted by allStah, Tue Apr-05-22 12:10 AM
Chelsea has success almost every year due to a plethora of
talented players. The success of Barca for the past two decades was
due to a system built around Messi. Now that he is gone we will
see If Barca deserves to be in the same universe as Real Madrid.

Pedro/ Fabregas came to Chelsea and went to a whole other level.

You got some talented prospects paired with MU and Arsenal rejects.
Im not sure that spells glory.

I mean no harm, just stating facts.
2762068, So. What place is Chelsea in?
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Apr-05-22 12:46 AM
Success almost every year huh? Let's see... they last won the EPL in 2017. They won it in 2015. And before that... 2010. That's "almost every year" in your estimation? Not winning for 5 year is "almost every year?"

Due to a system built around Messi. Hmm... no mention of having arguably the best midfield ever? No mention of the coaching? No mention of talents like Suarez, Neymar, Villa, Henry or even Pedro?

Same Pedro went to a "whole other level" with Chelsea despite scoring, in his best season with them, a whole 10 goals less than his best season with Barça? Fascinating.

MU and Arsenal rejects. Hm. You're describing a whopping two players. One of whom, Arsenal would have gladly kept, if he had actually wanted to be there. He forced his way out. We all know that. And referencing Man U when talking about Memphis is going back as long as it's been since Chelsea's last EPL title. And it's ignoring his entire spell at Lyon, where he outscored Pedro's best season with Chelsea. Not only that, over that period, there isn't a single Chelsea player that had a better single season goal haul. Not even your beloved Hazard.
But if that's really the route you wanna go... you've got a squad of Man U and PSG rejects yourself. If that's the route you wanna go.

Just stating facts.

So again. What place is Chelsea in?
2762069, Yeah, I see you left out Fabregas.
Posted by allStah, Tue Apr-05-22 12:54 AM
Chelsea wins a trophy almost every year, and the world didn’t really know
who Pedro was until he came to Chelsea. He was living under Messi’s shadow
in Barcelona.

We are champions of the world right now. No one is thinking about
Barcelona.

I wish you well though.

2762070, Also, Barcelona definitely had some great players
Posted by allStah, Tue Apr-05-22 01:42 AM
from Alves to Pique to Suarez to Neymar, etc. There is no denying that.

However, it was all built around Messi, and he outshined his teammates.

The last time Barcelona won the CL was in 2015. Since then, Real Madrid
has won 4, and Chelsea won last season and might win another one this
season.

Smarten up, fam.

Anyway, did you cry when this happened? I was on hiatus from the board in 2012.
What were your feelings like on that day?

No. You didn't know Pedro.
He scored a goal in the fucking Champions League final against Man U with Barceona.
The world knew him.
You didn't.
2762078, That’s bullshit, Fam
Posted by allStah, Tue Apr-05-22 08:01 AM
The guardian did a article on how Pedro was under appreciated in Barcelona ,
even though he was doing great things.

He came to Chelsea and was treated like a God. Dude became a legend
in less than 3 seasons.

He was not appreciated or recognized the way he should have been when he
was in La Liga.....

“And yet those expectations remain surprisingly low. While Catalonia might be talking seriously about Pedro, it can feel as though few others are. Beyond Barcelona there is still an assumption that he is one of few players in the Barça team who is not really that good.

Pedro denies it publicly, but others insist that during the clásico Cristiano Ronaldo looked at him and said: "And who are you?" Even if the story is apocryphal – and it may be – it says something. Others would ask the same thing. When Fernando Torres left Liverpool for Chelsea, many wondered why he did not hang on for a bid from Barcelona. The answer was simple: there would not be one, because of Pedro.“

This is Chelsea, not Arsenal or MU. As long as Marina and Cech are there,
we are good. Marina for the business dealings, and Cech for the football scouting.

Even if there is a complete overhaul, Chelsea will not fall to the relegation zone.

Chelsea fans are way too demanding. They will no sit around like
Arsenal and MU fans and watch their teams go to shite.

This is of no relevance to your aim, but unless Marina goes, nothing changes with Chelsea, even with a new owner.

They'll be fine. Prolly thrive to be honest, given the platform abramovich built.

Meanwhile Marina is obviously the best football exec in the game, other than *maybe* begiristain. I don't give AF what Cech does. The scouts all answer to her.

*This* is why I want her deported, preferably to Canada for her own safety.

If she leaves, it'll be like Tywin Lannister dying
2762208, I'd submit Monchi at Sevilla
Posted by thejerseytornado, Wed Apr-06-22 11:00 PM
Marina the best at a high spending club, but what Monchi has done to make Sevilla compete with the bigger clubs on his budget? shit. it's fucking impressive.
2762210, Fair, tho I wonder what woulda happened if he joined his boy Emery @ Arse

I'm still annoyed he passed on that, tho he prolly figured anything post wenger was going to be a mess too big to fix quickly, and more importantly he wouldn't get the time to do it right.

I don't deny he's excellent. I'd *easily* take him over everyone arsenal has had since david dein, to state the obvious.
2762220, we kinda can see from his brief time at roma

exactly what was happening at Roma, i think, in his mind. he built a team of youth and veterans and wanted to have 3-4 years to see the youth grow up and he didn't have the time. people are so focused on his youth signings and development, they don't see his history of also buying a bunch of solid veterans as a stable core. he's also definitely better with a limited budget, his bigger money signings at roma weren't that good.

you think we playing chess, but i'm playing mad-making. Basaglia
2762229, I had high hopes for Monchi at Roma but he was complete trash
Posted by khn, Thu Apr-07-22 11:16 AM
He opted to rebuild what had been a pretty damn successful core, and not only got that wrong but huge $$$ on the likes of Schick, N'Zonzi, Pastore, Kluivert, etc... just woeful. And as usual all this happening within the complete insanity that is Rome didn't help.

Glad he got to get back to Sevilla, which is clearly the right environment for him.
2762209, yeah, Cech answers to her, but she can’t pick talent.
Posted by allStah, Wed Apr-06-22 11:08 PM
She tried, and failed at that. That’s why Michael Emanelo left. She was interfering
with his job. and we went through sort of a 2 year funk under Sarri....

Cech knows talent and is responsible for the success of this team...
Mendy was his find.

Marina knows BUSINESS and FINANCE....She doesn’t know shit
about football talent. Players come to Chelsea because of Tuchel and
Cech.

Marina was a genius at getting Chelsea in compliance with FFP and
brokering great transfer deals to make Chelsea self sufficient.....That’s
her stuff.

Magilla and I go back and forth talking crap, same with Hitoriki, etc
It’s all banter. That goes for Promo, Brooklyn and all them other wack ass
MU supporters. We’ve been crap talking as far back as 2009..

However, they actually have teams that they follow. I follow a team.

Seriously, what team do you follow?

You’ can’t talk shit about someone’s club and not have one that you follow.

2762219, It was a simple statement of fact.
Posted by Buck, Thu Apr-07-22 07:29 AM
Chelsea annual spending far exceeds its revenue, and to maintain its top-4 status Abramovich "loaned" it hundreds of millions of pounds annually. If a new owner was unwilling to do that, perhaps insisting that the club broke even, became self-sustaining, the club would have much less money at its disposal. This is well-known, so I don't know what you're upset about.

>Seriously, what team do you follow?

Solihull Moors. They really needed the win Tuesday v. Halifax, but I still think they can just about squeeze into a playoff slot, if Halifax keep dropping points. Wrexham is catch-able too, though they've been on a tear and have a game in hand. Barnet coming up on Saturday, and while that should be a win, you can't take them lightly.
2762221, You have it twisted per usual.
Posted by allStah, Thu Apr-07-22 08:14 AM
Chelsea has been FFP compliant since 2014, and the money that
Abramovich loaned Chelsea was prior. Chelsea is sitting on a surplus
of revenue, due to funds that were generated from the sale of players
such as Morata, Hazard, and Luiz ( got 50 million from PSG....then brought
him back for 30 million a few years later...a 20 million dollar profit)

Hell, Chelsea made 200 million in 3 seasons just by selling
small time players. Chelsea got over 50 million for Zappacosta and
Drinkwater. Suckered MU to give us 40 million for Matic. Sold
Tammy to Roma for close to 40 million. Sold Tomori to Milan
for 26 million.

https://www.footballtransfers.com/en/transfer-news/uk-premier-league/2021/08/chelsea-set-make-120m-player-sales-this-summer

We are possibly the biggest selling club in all
of soccer.

Plus you throw in the enormous soccer kit deal with Nike, and the sponsorship
deal with 3 is a pretty huge deal as well. Chelsea’s revenue generation far exceeds
their spending.

All the new owner has to do is come in and make appearances, the foundation is
healthy and set.

Also, the teams you mentioned, you can keep them shits. I should have never
asked. I’ll take the L for that.

2762222, Correction on Danny Drinkwater. It was for another player.

Posted by Buck, Tue Apr-12-22 09:18 AM
Head to head with Wrexham, to draw level on points. Wrexham still have the game in hand, but obviously this is a must-win. Halifax have Altrincham, so no help there.

Chesterfield still a factor, but their form's been spotty. They'd have to run the table, really.

And I actually did take the Moors all the way to the Premier League in FM a few years ago. Took like 9 seasons, and then we didn't have the infrastructure to stay there, really, so I abandoned that game.

2 goals on the road.

I had two issues with Tuchel’s lineup. He left out Alonzo and went with
an old AZP at left wingback, and Pulisic is better coming off the bench.

Alonso provides great attacking ability, even though he sucks defensively.
AZP is more defensive and is too old at this point.

I’m not mad at Mendy. Dude has been a beast for both club and
country, and is probably still tired from being on national duty.

We will make the adjustments.

Werner’s speed and footwork are insane. Only trouble is his finishing,
and even that is somewhat unlucky.

Werner-Havertz-Mount....speed kills..

saw snippets of their press conference yesterday where Nagelsman was like "the only mistake made in the first leg is that Villareal did not kill us off", like some villain in a cheesy Stallone movie, and Neuer was also pontificating about how they was gonna whup that ass. L M A O
2762564, mayhaps Nagelsman isn’t as good as everyone thought?

To think Bayern was so quick to discard Hansi Flick for this dude.
2762918, i dont think thats it tbh
Posted by cgonz00cc, Sat Apr-16-22 07:35 PM
hes trying to get them to change the way they play, but they arent built for that

they dont have a right sided wingback, and i dont think the directors office wants Kimmich to do that much running at this point. so they do weird 3atb formations to make up for the fact that Pavard is a glorified centerback.
2762506, What was Silva doing?
Posted by allStah, Tue Apr-12-22 04:03 PM
He failed to close down Vinny. He just let him slot that pass to Benzo
for the easy header.

2762508, Silva and Kante thank you for the great service
Posted by allStah, Tue Apr-12-22 04:14 PM
but it’s time for you guys to go.

Poor performances by both.

That’s the priority for the summer...bring in Declan Rice and get another
CB, and possibly a striker.

Team is stacked...just makes those minor changes.

We got 15 mins to win this...come on Chelsea!
2762509, Great showing by Chelsea
Posted by allStah, Tue Apr-12-22 04:35 PM
But Tuchel focked up the first match with that bullshit
lineup.

Today’s lineup would have destroy Real like it did tonight.

Well, it’s Real Madrid for the rest of the way.

Now Chelsea can get some rest and close out the season.

2762510, fantastic game for neutrals

fair play to Chelsea, they really showed up (helped by Madrid's unbelievable apathy). These games are kinda fun when your team's not involved and a historical collapse may be in the cards.
Benzema man, what more can you say. With Lewy out it's fair to say he's locked up the Ballon d'Or?
2762514, if benzema can play like this for France (no jinx), look out

2762916, one way to look at it
Posted by cgonz00cc, Sat Apr-16-22 07:14 PM
the other is to say they let Chelsea have a little kickabout for a while before Modric and Benzema decided to wake up
2762924, No way. Chelsea should have scored 7 goals.
Posted by allStah, Sat Apr-16-22 08:19 PM
Pulisic blew two easy chances and so did Jorginho.

That Modric pass was fluke as hell and Silva allowed Vinny
to pass to Benzema for the header. That’s all RM did.

Chelsea was on 10 for the majority of the match.

That was complete domination by Chelsea, but they ran
out of legs in extra time.

And actually it was the substitutions that Ancelotti made that
spirited RM...Camavinga changed the game. That dude is the truth,
and of course he is from France ( not fair!)

2763380, i'll be surprised if much changes.
Posted by PROMO, Thu Apr-21-22 02:48 PM
this quote is why:

Murtough and Fletcher, according to sources, chose Ten Hag as their No.1 candidate because of all the options considered he was the one who "most closely aligned with the club's identity and strategy."

one of the biggest issues MU fans have is that the "leadership" (whooo boy do i use that word losely) want a minion they can control on the touchline.

Fletcher, god bless him for his time on the pitch, has no business being in that job. he has it cuz he himself is controllable.

so, when i hear quotes like that i'm like "ah yeah, they found they guy who won't come in tear shit up" which is EXACTLY what is needed.

to be fair, i didn't see a lot of compelling candidates out there for our situation, but we coulda waited until the end of the season to see if the right guy became available - but again the right guy is not the guy the bankers get to control.

we'll see. my optimist and skepticism are about equal.
2763391, Murtaugh is new and we've gutted the scouting dept to rebuild it
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Apr-21-22 07:09 PM
Poch was the puppet choice of management

whereas ETH came in and was pretty much like "so yall supposedly scouted every RB in the world and decided AWB was the one? yall are fucking morons" and shredded our whole recruitment and planning strategy in the interview process

a lot is going to change. whether it will work remains to be seen but no point in being skeptical about it. Murtaugh aint Woodward and him chasing social media metrics and impressions in the transfer market was half of our problem.

i just hope upper management knows next season is a writeoff as well. between the incoming transfers and youth promotions we're looking at like 8-10 new players and all these old holdover bums like Rashford and them also having to put up or shut up

August 2023 is where we should start to see how high ETH can take us.

im on our big ITK discord and what i am hearing is very encouraging.

edit: hopefully the next thing they gut is the fitness/physio department. whatever you call it. our players conditioning is shambolic. they are physically weak. explosion is nonexistent. and they get hurt entirely too much. Ralf been talking about it so that should be one of our big priorities

2763395, i was reading a few things after i posted that...
Posted by PROMO, Thu Apr-21-22 07:50 PM
and am a bit more optimistic because i read some of what you just said but the biggest thing was that he wasn't coming UNLESS he had control.

as far as next season - i've already said i'm okay w/ mid-table as long as we've shed all the old bums and locker room trouble makers and are are signing/promoting the right young players. gonna take a few seasons to get right. rumors are he's looking for 8-10 new signings like you said, and has somewhere in the area of 200M to spend. i'm not expecting miracles in season one. results are nice, but effort and playing together (plus fitness) will be way more important to me.

it's funny, i could really count on about one hand the number of players we SHOULD keep. the rest? some should DEFINITELY be cast into the ocean and the remaining ones from that list i could take or leave - but i guess you have to field a whole team, lol.

as you said - our fitness is a effin' joke. that has to be one of the first things to change.

Absolutely incredible what Eddie Howe has been able to do on Tyneside. From a purely football perspective, the turnaround has been incredible. I dreaded watching matches for years. I am now excited on match days for the first time in ages.

Howe has figured out how to ignite players that months before were not very good. Joelinton, Krafth, Shelvey, Willock, Fraser, Murphy, etc. were not very good. They are all key members of the squad now and Joelinton is world class in his new role.

The new signings are great too. Ashley spent 14 years not spending any money or investing in the club. The money spent over the Winter break barely put a dent in the funds available to the team under FFP. Most of them, except for Bruno, are not huge names but they fit the club perfectly. I can't wait for Trippier to get back and for Wilson to get involved as well.

For the first time in over a decade, I have real hope for the future.

This from the minute-by-minute for today's Man U- Brentford match:

20m ago
14.15
“For a club with a relatively unknown continental coach and a team of many journeymen, today’s plucky underdogs must be delighted with their mid-table finish,” emails Justin Kavanagh. “They’ve even taken the odd scalp against top five opponents, and kept their suburban London fanbase clicking through the turnstiles. Congrats on another successful season under the Glazers for Manchester United.”

2764324, The thing is, you'd think they were fighting relegation.
Posted by Buck, Tue May-03-22 02:44 PM
The argument is that it's United, and therefore anything less than excellence is unacceptable, but damn, they're still top half.

our payroll is fucking stoopid (because it was stupidly managed - another story) and when you spend that money then yeah, not finishing near the top of the table is an abject failure.

not for nothing, if it wasn't for CR7, we MIGHT be fighting relegation - we'd be pretty damn close that's FOR SURE.
2764332, No doubt about any of that.

so i think that's the only reason we were able to hover from 5th to 7th all season.

no teams stepped up. i mean, Chelsea's pretty wack, Arsenal and Tottenham more wack than Chelsea.

we're next wackest. lol.

there was some teams right behind us (ahem, West Ham) who i thought might push up to that 4th spot but it never materialized.

whole league besides those top two just kinda butt this year.
