Each individual in the front office has taken credit. "Victory has a thousand fathers..." yadda yadda yadda.
I'm inclined to believe it was Don Nelson who made the call/pushed the hardest, because drafting a player after his relatives/agent tell you not to is a very Nellie thing to do.
