2750453, College Basketball starts tonight.

Duke and Kentucky play today. And then there are some other games, I guess. Both teams return some key pieces and bring in a lot of new. Really no clue what to expect from either side. Should be revealing as to how ready both squads are. I expect a great game.
2750481, excited for Tennessee
Posted by will_5198, Tue Nov-09-21 07:00 PM
last year was a letdown with such a heralded freshman class, but Vols didn't have enough shooters.

I know Barnes' history in recruiting hasn't matched the on-court success, but I like this roster a lot. Justin Powell (Auburn transfer) and Kennedy Chandler (5-star PG) are going to be problems, and if the frontcourt holds up this team has good potential.
2750484, I really like this team. Genuine Final Four contender.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Nov-09-21 08:08 PM
If Josiah Jordan James is healthy, that reeeeeally helps too. I love his potential for a breakout.
2750485, Can't believe Ohio State is going to escape.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Nov-09-21 08:10 PM
Paging Guru with the usual recruiting complaints, lol. I like Branham's potential, but man, they really struggled to create shots without Duane Washington. You simply need to have perimeter creation, and they don't really have it in a polished way yet.

And Ali Ali rocked EJ Liddell on a couple of late possessions. If EJ can't figure out how to defend effectively against a team like Akron, he's not gonna be drafted.
2750495, twas a good game

2750501, went to the Dome tonight

Cuse has shooters and length. Cole Swider is a perfect fit and shouldā€™ve came here in the first place.

Handling good pressure defense will be the question mark.
2751189, Went to game 2 as well
Posted by DJR, Sat Nov-20-21 04:40 PM
I think once again: bubble teamā€¦.but if we get in nobody wants to play us and we could make a sweet 16 run. But the difference is I think thatā€™s more the ā€œnormā€ than the ceiling this year. For the first time in awhile we could be better than that.

The rotation is already established. Thereā€™s nothing to figure out.

Joe Girard looks like a different player than last year: heā€™s in shape. Heā€™s not doing stupid things. Heā€™s actually 8-8 from 3 so far. Heā€™s the 3rd shooter, rather than the second. He should get better looks.

Buddy Boeheim is a stud. He gets better every year and should be 18-20 ppg, and will have his games where even when guarded well, heā€™ll get hot and light it up.

Cole Swider is an ideal Syracuse forward. Heā€™s a little slow, but heā€™s long, a great shooter, and can rebound and pass effectively. I canā€™t believe he went to Villanova. They play such different ball than Cuse, and heā€™s a way better fit here.

Jimmy Boeheim is actually better than I thought. Heā€™s like 23, strong, experienced, craftyā€¦all that coaches kid stuff and in his 5th year of college. Pretty versatile, heā€™s got the little floater shots, decent ball handler and passer, not a great shooter but can make them if left open. Heā€™s a more aggressive and stronger Marek Dolezaj type.

Jesse Edwards gives us our first legit center in years thatā€™s actually a center. He can give us 8 and 6 and block shots.

Frank Anselem is the backup center - he will be better than Edwards at everything except blocking shots. Heā€™s just young. Going to be a player.

Symir Torrence is the backup PG. Local kid and 4 star recruit who struggled at Marquette for 2 years. Canā€™t shoot, wonā€™t score much, solid ball handler and pass first PG who defends. Heā€™ll be an adequate backup.

Benny Williamsā€¦the X factor. Big recruit. Incredible athlete. Not much offensive game yet. Shoots line drives. Insane defensive potential, and will eventually be very good. If he progresses and finishes the year strong - weā€™ll be very tough by March. If heā€™s just not there yet he his year, weā€™ll be okā€¦.a very dangerous shooting team with length, but lacking the athleticism of the really good teams.

Weā€™ll get boat races a few times and the FSU and Louisville type teams will be a problem for us, but think we could be pretty good.
2751221, I have real concerns about the defense.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Nov-21-21 03:17 AM
This personnel is better equipped to shoot than past Cuse teams, but the defensive length and strength and disruptiveness doesnā€™t compare to years past. Obviously early in the season, but theyā€™re currently 117th in KenPom on defense after getting *shredded* by Colgate. I think they have to find a way to at least be a top 75 defense, otherwise theyā€™re gonna reeeeeally be crossing their fingers more than usual on selection day.
2751224, My concerns were just amplified greatly, lol
Posted by DJR, Sun Nov-21-21 08:33 AM
They are slow as shit at all 5 positions in the starting lineup, so they better get really comfortable in their rotations.

They were up 17-2 to start the game, soā€¦..lost by 30 to Colgate the last 30 minutes or so. Wow. I know Colgate is pretty good and a horrible matchup for the zone. But come on.
2751481, Oh wowā€¦.we suck
Posted by DJR, Thu Nov-25-21 07:50 AM
Swiderā€™s and Bennyā€™s lack of production is killing us.

2750507, same with Nebraska to Western Illinois...
Posted by Nodima, Wed Nov-10-21 09:10 AM
The hits just keep on coming this year LOL. Spent most of this pre-season with ever building hype from how much the Raptors liked what we did with Dalano Banton to Katz seeding us at 10 in March to utterly dominating our exhibition games...

Then outrebounded by 20+ and several missed free throws with the game on the line to lose by one. The campus is cursed! Thankfully you learn way less about a basketball team after one game than a football team, but still...ooph.

I HATE Duke but he's local and was coached by one of my best friends in HS.

So, now I gotta low key support Duke by supporting him.

This feels gross.

2750875, First half was pretty gross. Second half was god level.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Nov-15-21 12:48 PM
In the end, Nova just ran out of steam-- their rotation is shallower, and some of those guys just don't have the experience playing long minutes that UCLA does. Guys like Dixon and Slater just haven't played 40 minute games before. Justin Moore also got caught on bullshit foul trouble really early, and that hurt his effectiveness on both ends-- he's their best player imo and is going to be really important for them in big games like this.

Juzang's ability to make difficult shots is other-worldly. I've no doubt that he will completely shoot UCLA out of a game at some point this season (shit, he almost did in the first half), because his shot selection is absurd... but when he's going, he's one of those guys that *truly* can't miss.

I still think end of the day that Nova is probably the better team. Losing in OT in a true road game this early in the season with Justin Moore in bad foul trouble is probably the sort of thing that makes them a much better team come March. But I am still really impressed with Cronin's team defense, especially considering Juzang and Campbell aren't really good defenders and are out there at all times. Says a lot about the coaching and says a lot about the impact of guys like Jaquez (the best pro prospect on UCLA imo-- for this upcoming draft anyway, maybe Watson passes him long term) and Myles Johnson, both of whom were really terrific.
2751226, Still suffering from Coolidge PTSD.

2750878, The Zags smoked a really good Texas team.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Nov-15-21 12:58 PM
I thought Texas did an admirable job of fighting them in the second half, Beard made some nice defensive adjustments... and it just didn't matter. Drew Timme is just unstoppable in the paint unless you have a true, strong big man who holds his ground and doesn't bite for ball fakes. Texas kept getting caught in Few's switches, so guys like Christian Bishop and Brock Cunningham were having to guard him, and that may as well be a layup for Timme, lol. (In the first half, it often was literally a layup.) The matchup against guys like Myles Johnson in the UCLA game and Mark Williams and Theo John in the Duke game will be really interesting, as Johnson and John in particular will gladly get physical, and getting physical with Timme was the only thing that even slowed him down last year. (UCLA's gonna have a big problem figuring out who to guard Holmgren-- Duke has Banchero, and there's no love between those two, so that should make for sensational television.)

Texas is going to be really, really good, that was just a brutal matchup for them, especially since they didn't have Dylan Disu. Loved what I saw from Timmy Allen and Tre Mitchell in particular-- and I'd still consider them my Big 12 favorite (though if Agbaji is actually making the leap for Kansas, I'll backpedal on that quickly, lol).
2750885, Yea, they got with Texas early. Iā€™m tired of the Holgrem hype already.

Value City Arena (worst name ever for a college basketball arena) is so fucking vacuous and dead. it sounds like a library inside an nba stadium...just dead and devoid of any electric game atmosphere.

the last time it was truly loud and rocking was 10 years ago November 29th , 2011 when Jared Sullinger and William Buford beat the living shit out of Duke....I was there for that game and it was one of the best nights of my life.

ever since then, nothing.

2751298, Also helps that Garcia and Malek just can't play defense.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Nov-21-21 09:02 PM
Going to be an interesting year for the Tar Heels. They'll of course play lights out defense against Duke, per usual... but I don't think this is a Top 100 defense. Which means they need, like, a Top 5 offense to not be a bubble team.

Two strong preseason wins to add to the resume. Anything less than a regular season B1G title (baring injuries, no jinx) would be a disappointment.

Jaden Ivy is electric, Edey/Trevion twin towers is unmatched. And sacha is on fire.

Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Nov-21-21 09:19 PM
Don't think he would've left last summer since his team brought literally everyone back... but the team's all seniors this year. When they all leave, definitely opens the door for Schmidt to snag a sweet high-major gig.
2751306, Iā€™ll take him at Cuse

2751302, Says more about the Bonnies than Marquette imo.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Nov-21-21 09:17 PM
Marquette's better than people think. Think folks wrote them off as straight-up bad when they're probably NIT good at absolute worst.

Once I saw the Bonnies didn't fuck around in the first half for once, I knew this one wouldn't go well for Marquette in the second half. Bonnies may not lose more than five games this year. Top 4-5 seed is a very real possibility.
2751308, Yea, they have all the pieces to make a deep run in March

2751733, Was at the Duke-Zags game. It was *electric.*
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Nov-28-21 12:09 PM
Surprisingly more Zags fans than Duke fans, and they were definitely demonstrative out there. That fanbase is very real-- certain areas just live and breathe basketball, and Mark Few's done that in Spokane. Really impressed with how they showed up.

End of the day, Gonzaga relies on their front court to win, and they ran into us, the only team in the country that has a better front court than them. Our front court might not run up NPOY solo numbers like Timme or have the allure of Chet's versatility, but we're strong, physical, finish well, Paolo can shoot beautifully, and unlike Timme, both our guys defend. Timme just couldn't get going on anything outside of ball screens.
2751737, Duke looked really dynamic
Posted by will_5198, Sun Nov-28-21 12:54 PM
Paolo is a superstar, but I was impressed with the whole team

Moore looks like a different player from when I saw him last year; his game is perfect for college

fuck Coach K though
2751847, Moore's definitely hitting his stride for the first time.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Nov-28-21 10:25 PM
He still forces the issue sometimes with his passing/dribble drive, but his assist rate has nearly doubled, his turnover rate has nearly halved, and he's shooting a respectable 34% from 3 (pretty great for a guy whose shot was mostly atrocious the first two years). He also more than anything else just looks stronger and more athletic-- a lot of his turnovers in the first two years came from getting in trouble and not having the speed or strength to make it out, and he's clearly made some gains in both departments.

It also just helps, goes without saying, for Duke to have a little experience in Moore. We haven't had a top 30 recruit impact upperclassman since Grayson Allen-- usually anyone who stays that long is Just A Guy and can't really be relied on in tough situations. The experience from Moore (and Mark Williams... and to a much lesser extent Jeremy Roach) has really helped in those spurts where Paolo floats a little or Keels struggles to find his rhythm.

If Moore can continue to defend at this level and maintain that A:T ratio... there's a non-zero chance he could actually be an NBA draft pick, unfathomable this time last year.

>fuck Coach K though

2751936, Would love to see it happen! Spread is Duke -2.5, lol.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Nov-29-21 08:33 PM
I do wonder if the emotion of Ohio State suffering a close loss and Duke coming off a big emotional win makes this a possible asleep-at-the-wheel spot for Duke. We've had some weak first halves against the non-Kentucky-and-Gonzaga set, and I don't think it'd be wise for us to take OSU for granted, especially in our first true road game.

That said, OSU just needs so much from Liddell to win here, and Paolo will be on him. I like that specific matchup a lot, obviously, lol. Wouldn't be surprised to see OSU zone early and often-- we saw some zone from undersized teams, but a true zone from a high-major would be an interesting challenge for a Duke team that struggles to shoot.
2751938, Wow at that spread lol it should be way higher IMO

But yeah, like I said above, a comedown spot for Duke. The foul trouble from everyone sucked the wind out of their sails on offense, and they settled for bad shots. And K shouldā€™ve adjusted his defense in the second but didnā€™t. Oh well. We lose an early road game every year, glad we got it out of the way pre-conference, lol.

Roy lost to Wofford multiple times. And UAB. And College of Charleston.

Jay Wright lost to Furman. And Penn. And Columbia.

Even great coaches lose shitty games. So it's to be expected that really good coaches will also lose a few. *shrug*

I know I'm not going to convince you, and that's fine. But I think Holtmann's a good coach. And whether you think he is or not, his game plan in the second half was obviously superior to K's. So you can take that for whatever it's worth, I guess, lol.

if you watched a single TOSU game this year, you'd know how shitty they played until tonight. Hell, (ask any HONEST and objective) TOSU fans. Or take a gander at the comments on 11w for past games. Substitutions all wrong, no recruiting depth, weak ass guard play and no defensive identity...typical of Holtamnn teams.

i didnt watch tonights game. i was at the nets knicks game having fun. im actually annoyed we won. these types of wins are just going to give him more time.

this is one of those "every blind squirrel finds a nut" games, we caught Duke sleeping.

edit I'll donate $150 to the Duke Children's Hospital if we finish above 4th in the conference this year.

Michigan has guard issues, Caleb Houstan isnā€™t really ready, and Dickinson is not equipped to deal with a guy like Bacot who matches his size but is laterally quicker (foul trouble didnā€™t help).

But Caleb Love playing this well against teams not named Duke would be big for Carolina this year in a very weak ACC.

Emoni Bates is easily the top talent reason theyā€™re losing. If Pennyā€™s asking vets to sacrifice time and touches for Bates, the vets are right.

"Thereā€™s a group of people on this team that if I played them, I really feel in my heart we could be undefeated or only have one loss."

Weird, if only there was a man whose job it was to put the ideal winning players into a basketball game!

"The main reason we have these losses is the veterans donā€™t want to take the young guys under their wings. They want it to be about them. So when adversity hits, they run. I guarantee you weā€™ll start winning because youā€™re gonna see guys out there who care and will carry out the game plan. They might make mistakes, but there are not gonna be any character issues.ā€

He tried to say a couple other times in the interview, ā€œIā€™m the coach so itā€™s on meā€ā€¦ but then he says this. lmao. nah, dude.

ā€œIā€™ve tried to think it through as a guy that played the game. Our problems have nothing to do with Xā€™s and Oā€™s. We have character issues all the way around.ā€

Abjectly insane considering there is zero comprehensible halfcourt offense being run. To single out your Xs and Os as not being the problem when itā€™s been the main reason your team has underachieved since your arrival is just wild beyond measure.

2753070, Well, benching Emoni Bates definitely helped, lol.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Dec-16-21 12:23 AM
If the ball's with Williams and Nolley instead of Bates, your team is IMMEDIATELY better. On both ends. And Bama's gonna struggle some with aggressive big men this year due to Bediako being raw, Gurley being a disappointment, and Gary just giving up too much height to true bigs. Was a perfect game for Williams to come out and remind people that he was pretty obviously their best player last year.

It definitely also helped that they caught Bama on their first road game of the year after a big emotional win a few days prior. Not terribly dissimilar to Duke dropping against OSU right after the Gonzaga win. I think Bama is pretty clearly better than Memphis, just a classic "bad spot" game.

Tennessee's been turning teams over really well this year-- and Memphis can't *not* turn it over. I like the spot for Tennessee, especially on the heels of a much-needed Memphis win, but since Tennessee's been pretty jump-shot reliant, if Memphis can similarly lock down the perimeter (and not play Bates), they could make it interesting if Tennessee's 3s aren't falling.

Program has slipped big time, but has still usually been able to sneak in the tourney and make a sweet 16 run every couple years. I think that has kept any unrest pretty quiet, as there hasnā€™t been a truly bad season or stretch.

I think most see that his kids are graduating this year and figure thatā€™s a logical time to do it, and can deal with a bad year this year.

If he sticks around beyond this season and things keep slipping, I think peopleā€™s patience may start to wane. The last thing anyone wants to see is an ugly exit for a legend, but the standards set with him as coach are much higher than thisā€¦.which makes it a tricky situation.

1980s: 8 tournaments. Average seed: 3
1990s: 8 tournaments. Average seed: 5
2000s: 7 tournaments: Average seed: 4
2010-14: 5 tournaments: Average seed: 2
2015-21: 4 tournaments: Average seed: 10

Itā€™s just been such a big fall off post 2014. Things can change in a hurry in hoops off just one really good recruiting class, but it just doesnā€™t seem like itā€™s going to happen again under JB.
2753069, The zone vexing teams in the tourney has helped *tons.*
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Dec-16-21 12:18 AM
Their last three second weekends were as an 11 seed, 11 seed, and 10 seed, IIRC. Haven't had a top 4 seed since 2014. If they didn't have those fortunate runs in the tourney and had only made, say, one sweet 16 and zero top 4 seeds in the tournament in the last 7-8 seasons? That would... be really bad for a team of Cuse's pedigree.

Georgetown's had a top 4 seed more recently than Cuse, which is *insane* to think about, lol.

Another thing - there was patience for awhile due to the sanctions. From like 2015-18 or so, that was a reasonable point. Hey, we had sanctions and still made a final 4 and sweet 16. Relax.

But the 2019 team was a major disappointment. Almost everybody back from a sweet 16 team and they get an 8 seed and get bounced round 1. So the team that was supposed to be the one that was ā€œSyracuse againā€ā€¦.top 25 all year and can beat anyone and a top 4-5 seed, was a flop and then recruiting hasnā€™t picked up. Even with last years sweet 16 run, we couldnā€™t even compete with Houston. That never used to happen. We not only had the vexing zone, but the same level of size and athletes as any of the top teamsā€¦.the CJ Fairs, Jerami Grants, Flynn, Christmas, Waitersā€¦.weā€™re just not getting guys like that anymore. Gotta get back to getting Philly and DMV kids, and not Boeheimā€™s sons and their AAU teammates. Even the good Upstate NY kids, weā€™ve missed out on too many. Isiah Stewart, Thomas Bryant, Kevin Huerter, those kids wouldā€™ve been Orange locks in previous eras. Weā€™re like a mediocre Notre Dame type team at this pointā€¦.the kind of team we used to thump by 15-20 every time.

If they call the travel on Chandler before that Fulkerson and-1, the end result may have changed. Not that one call changes the game that much, Arizona still had opportunities, but just shows how close these two teams were-- and in a road game for the Wildcats at that.

I took a futures bet on them at 60 to 1, and I'm mad I waited that long... my buddy snagged them at 90 to 1. Arizona should win the Pac-12 (I like them more than UCLA), they've got a great shot at a 1 seed, and I think this win will age very very well for the Vols.

Kentucky going turbo at Rupp, not much you can do. The other two losses, to top 5 SEC teams on the road, I also don't have much problem with. (Especially since no Chandler for the Bama game.)

But Tennessee should be happy to play a muck-it-up game like the one with Ole Miss, but the offense was just so bad that a bad team like Ole Miss hung around way longer than they should.

The problem, really, has been Chandler kind of hitting a freshman wall in terms of his efficiency. Been turning it over more, from what I've seen, and generally getting bothered with the defensive pressure and physicality he's facing (his size worries me as a pro prospect, and that's kind of cropping up here, from what I can tell). Also, the offense really needs Justin Powell to not be a nothingburger, and he kind of has been in the last couple games I've watched.

Still think Tennessee's fine, Top 5 team in the SEC, 5 or 6 seed in the tourney, around that range, maybe some upside for more if they get some big wins. But to really contend for a Final Four, Chandler has to go Super Saiyan, I don't really presently see another way.
2755461, Barnes historically sucks at bama and LSU
Posted by will_5198, Sun Jan-16-22 01:03 PM
even when he has a great team. conversely, he's almost always been competitive against Kentucky so I really wasn't expecting to be completely out of it from the start at Rupp.

Barnes fucked up with Powell and hopefully he realizes it. he gets so stuck on maximum defensive efficiency, that he forgets we need people that put the mfing ball in the hoop.

Barnes said that Powell needs to play better defense to get minutes. OK, but why wasn't he even on the floor when they were down by 2 at bama in the final 30 seconds? this was *after* bama had taken a timeout. lying like shit.

I get basketball is a two-way game, but you don't bury your deep threat wide receiver because you got some plodder that run blocks better than him.

2757249, Gotta think the UNC/L'ville officiating will inspire an investigation.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-01-22 10:55 PM
The technical foul and the subsequent foul-- where a Louisville player got called for a foul for Bacot clotheslining him-- absolutely reek of a ref having a UNC -3.5 ticket.

Wish Louisville's interim coach would've just gotten ejected, frankly. It would've been worth it. We see dodgy calls for home teams every game-- but for the dodgiest calls I've seen all year to go against you on your home court? I can't even imagine what the Louisville team is going through tonight. Unreal.
2757250, Probably the worst end of game officiating I've seen in a very long time.

I know UCLA did it last year, but that's the exception not the rule, lol.

Bad combo for them of inexperience, a coach who's never had a team this inexperienced, and a Big 10 that got a lot tougher/more talented at the top. Like, Hunter Dickinson was a Top 5 Big Ten player last season, Top 6 at worst. Now he's... what, tail end of the Top 10? That's just a bad combo of things to happen all at once.

Howard also had to learn the hard way that not every mid-major transfer PG is gonna be Mike Smith. He's also the exception to the rule. Most mid-major transfer PGs are Devante Jones.

Aside from that early loss to Rutgers , Purdue has looked a slight cut above everyone else in conference ā€¦

Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Feb-05-22 03:11 PM
Purdue's had defense issues on occasion. Illinois made it through the stretches with no Cockburn and the big stretch of no Curbelo with minimal speed bumps. Underwood's a terrific coach (shout out to the poster who knows who he is who said he didn't believe Underwood would work and fought with me about it). I think they're a sneaky Final Four level team, which is crazy to consider the year after they lose Ayo.

Cockburn has just been so unstoppable-- wild to think that none of the Purdue guys might even be Top 3 Big Ten POY vote getters.

Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Feb-14-22 12:53 PM
Of course Cuse is appalling too, goes without saying. You're probably getting skewed by watching ACC basketball, because this is the worst ACC in recent memory. They're getting *maybe* four teams in the dance, max.

But this is a better year for "knowing players" than there's been in a while tbh, because most of the lottery picks in the NBA Draft come from the best teams. I'd bet 8 of the Top 10 picks, 11-12 of the lottery picks in general, and, like, 15 of the Top 20 picks are coming from Top 15 AP poll teams.

On top of that, you have an incredible Big 10 Player of the Year race, loads of parity there. You have a tighter Big 12 than normal, with a genuine 3-way race at the top. SEC is really stacked at the top. Even the Big East is fun again, since Connecticut and Marquette are actually good again and Providence has been having a fucking miracle run. There are also some really fucking good mid-majors.

I think it's shaping up to be a perfect NCAA Tournament. None of the top teams are completely untouchable, plenty of really good mid-majors are going to get in, and a lot of those 8-10 seed teams are teams with either a big star or a really strong coach, both of which can help cause chaos. I'm really excited.

I ask mainly because I'm a huge Ewing fan based on what he did for the Knicks, but I don't follow college basketball, so I wouldn't know how poorly Ewing is doing at this job.

It would suck for Ewing to get the axe since he waited so many years to get a head coaching gig, compounded with the fact this is his alma matter, but if he's actually hurting Georgetown by being the head coach, them I suppose I can't argue with him getting fired.

Posted by Nodima, Thu Feb-17-22 02:17 PM
So I stumbled across Oregon State and thought, wait, weren't they decent at basketball? And came across their wiki page:

"Oregon State has been terrible at basketball in 2022 and won 14 conference championships and appeared in the NCAA Tournament 18 times (three (1980ā€“82) were later vacated by the NCAA). The Beavers have advanced to the Final Four twice (1949, 1963), and their most recent tournament appearance was in 2021, when they advanced to the Elite Eight after winning their first tournament games since 1982."

Some do-gooder will get rid of that first sentence eventually but that's hilarious. And sad.

Jaden Ivy is a better player right now
2759318, I'd still argue Ivey's ceiling is higher, tbh.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Feb-25-22 12:19 PM
Branham's the better shooter, but Ivey's the better athlete, the better creator, and I think Ivey's versatility between playing on ball and off ball is really valuable at the next level. Branham's a better defender today, but I think Ivey's got really good defensive potential as well (hard for him to be a consistently effective defender in that Purdue roster tbh).

It's also easy for me to say "Jaden Ivey's a Top 3-4 pick, even potentially #2, and I'm not sold that Branham's definitely a Top 4 pick next year"... because I don't think Branham'll be back next year. lol. I'd imagine he'll see that he can go in that 20-25 range this season on the potential, and he'll take off. But we'll see, anything can happen in the NIL era, obviously.
2759375, Of course Ivey has his worst game right after this post, lol.

I dogged the hire. I still don't love it. But this team has improved throughout the season both in ability and focus, even as depth has whittled away through injury.

Regardless of what happens in the tournament (unless we lose to one of those whodafuck teams), a job well done.

The same fans ready to can him this summer are anointing him now, lol. Granted, it was a huge, huge win. They capitalized on Dukeā€™s obvious assumption that theyā€™d win and kicked Duke in the teeth in the second half (RJ Davis especially, what an impressive game from him).

But I find all the swings wild. The early season presumptuous ā€œhe sucksā€ swings. Now the post-Duke win ā€œheā€™s the truthā€ swing. If he loses a bad game round 1, ready for it to swing back. Nobody ever wants to let a new coach have a few years of larger sample size anymore, lol. (For what itā€™s worth, I think heā€™s clearly a smart basketball mind. Whether it works out on such a huge platform, weā€™ve yet to see, but I definitely donā€™t think there was anything resembling a massive red flag this year.)

Illinois is painful to watch. Carbelo does too much flashy stuff,
and Cockburn is an out of date Center ...has zero skillset.

Might be another 2nd round exit.

as last year.

And the fact that they won a share of the big ten title, letā€™s you know
how weak the big ten is this year, especially compared to last year.

Illinoisā€™ offense is give it to Cockburn, which is so easy to defend. Iā€™m not
expecting them to go far at all.

Iā€™ll be happy if they get out of the second round.

Last yearā€™s team should of went all the way . There were hands down the best
in the big ten...

This year? Win against a top team, and then go and lose to penn state or
some weak team.

2759776, I don't disagree, but it's still a great accomplishment.

Underwood very clearly has the program in a really nice place, between last year's 1 seed and this year's Big Ten regular season title. I was very big on Underwood coming in (some people on this board were not), and I think everything he's doing is on the money.

And I think there's a very real chance this team is a Sweet 16/Elite Eight team, depending on the matchup. Outside of the game at Purdue, they've been either won or come very close to winning every Quad 1-A game they've played-- and a few of those games were not at full roster strength.

I'm excited to continue to see what Underwood keeps doing going forward.

and that flagrant foul was an absolute joke.

Today just underscored how awful of a job Boeheim did the last two years. Solely because his son had to play 38 minutes a game at the 2 guard. So Girard had to play out of position at PG, while the best PG on the team came off the bench. Symir Torrence made such an impact today, finally getting the chance to run the team as the starting PG. He shouldā€™ve been starting PG since Christmas time.

Now that Buddy is gone, Girard can move to the two and we can play a real PG again after two wasted seasons.

Man had zero objectivity with his kids. Heā€™s gotta retire.

Yup. Boeheim had such a blind spot for his kid. And Buddy is a good player, but Iā€™m actually thrilled heā€™s gone. Hoping Boeheim retires, but if he doesnā€™t I fully expect him to do a way better job next year than he did this year because that objectivity blind spot is gone.

I do like Penn Stateā€™s new coach, and I know OSUā€™s been beat up with injuries lately, but thereā€™s just no excuse to give up that game in that spot.

Now lost 4 of their last 5, including a couple of ugly ones. Gonna be a 6/7 seed, and Iā€™m pretty likely to pick them to get upset. Theyā€™re just really limping across the finish line.

2760223, Missouri Tigers fire men's basketball coach after five seasons (swipe)
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Fri Mar-11-22 09:46 PM
I was hoping he'd get another year. But they started out the season very poorly (they lost by 21 to Liberty).

Even though the team pulled it together and was competitive in a lot of their games (they lost by 1 to Auburn), they just lost too much.

I think Cuonzo was good for the program because 1. After Kim Anderson, anyone who won more than 10 games seemed like a revelation. 2. He had a lot of integrity and seemed honorable. Something that I don't think enough schools can say about their coach. Even though Kim pulled the program back from the damage Keith Haith caused, Cuonzo was able to get the program touching the type of success it once had.

And it was cool to have a Black coach in Missouri of all places.

But he didn't win enough. It's possible to say that his teams lacked talent relative to their competition. And it's also possible to say the school didn't invest in their program.

But it's a results-based business and that lack of success led to his removal.

Jeff Borzello
ESPN Staff Writer

Missouri fired head men's basketball coach Cuonzo Martin after five seasons, the school announced on Friday.

Martin took over the Tigers in 2017 after three seasons at California, with Missouri hiring him to replace Kim Anderson. The Tigers reached the NCAA tournament in Martin's first season and then went to the tournament again in 2021, but they failed to advance out of the first round in each.

This season, Missouri went 12-21 overall and 5-13 in SEC play. The Tigers' season ended Thursday with a 76-68 loss to LSU in the SEC tournament. Missouri lost seven of its last nine games to end the season.

In five seasons, Martin went 78-77 overall.

Prior to taking over at Missouri, Martin spent three seasons at California, three seasons at Tennessee and three seasons at Missouri State. He went to a Sweet 16 with Tennessee in 2014 and made an NCAA tournament appearance with California in 2016. Martin also spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at Purdue.

The Tigers now have their fourth men's basketball head-coaching search since 2011. Frank Haith and Anderson each lasted just three seasons, while Martin was in Columbia for five. Potential candidates expected to be involved, sources told ESPN, include Murray State's Matt McMahon, Baylor assistant Jerome Tang, North Texas' Grant McCasland and San Francisco's Todd Golden.

The school hired Fogler Consulting to aid with the search.
