2746057, Simmons is only getting traded if a really good offer comes in.

Morey's made it pretty clear that he's content to wait. He'll gamble for a deal with upside, but the Sixers are in a win-now position, so unless Morey thinks he's getting a combination of win-now pieces and picks, he'll just sit on Simmons.

Since he's asking for a lot, and other GMs think Morey is desperate to trade Simmons, they're not gonna meet Morey's asking price... but I think some team will bend before Morey breaks. Morey just doesn't really have an incentive to deal Simmons for less than value, especially because, if this deal is fucked and the Sixers dip in quality, then Embiid will be pissed. I'm sure Embiid is on board with Morey for the "wait til you can get a fair return" plan.

So he'll fine Simmons nearly a mil and a half for not reporting to camp, and he'll keep fining Simmons as much as he can. And he'll wait.

contract was designed.

Ben can eat the fines if he wants without it hurting too much. Considering the league was fining teams $100K per game for resting players, if the same is applied to Ben, he can eat 41 games and only lose 1/4 the salary.

It's best they scale back their expectations because the longer this goes, the worse it's going to get for both sides.
2746087, I don't think Morey needs to scale back.

Simmons has a lengthy contract, and there are multiple stars in the league on teams in tenuous situations that can demand out once the season has started.

If Morey thinks the Simmons contract can be used to structure a deal for Lillard or Beal or whomever, then he shouldn't come off it for peanuts. He should wait it out and see what happens at the deadline. Sixers will still be in the playoffs without Simmons. (They won't win the East or anything, but they weren't gonna win the East with the current roster anyway.)

And if the big names aren't available, he can still make a scaled-back-expectation deal then. There's always time to make the scaled-back deal. But unlike the Pelicans with AD or the Rockets with Harden, Sixers are in win-now mode over the next 3-4 years. Future draft picks and role players just aren't going to be that enticing (unless it's an absurd amount of assets).
2746089, He needs to scale back his expectations that one team can get it done

He's going to need to get multiple teams involved to land the type of package he wants. No one squad is gonna throw it all away for Ben Simmons. At least not one that can give philly assets to keep them in contention right today.

There's a LOT of competition for Beal and Lillard if they hit the market and people aren't going to be clamoring to get Simmons if he hasn't played ball in 8 months, can't shoot and is publicly disgruntled.

It's going to have to be a 3-4 team deal and it probably won't be Beal or Lillard.
2746094, I'm sure he's weighing the options.

But I still think the best options will come closer to the deadline when teams that have been struggling or teams that are on the brink of real contention will be looking to make moves.

Maybe the true contenders won't be clamoring for Simmons... but any team looking for longterm potential absolutely should be. As I mentioned in that other post, there are very, very few young players of Simmons's proven pedigree. Even with last year's shitty postseason, that doesn't change what he's been able to accomplish already. And it doesn't change what he can bring to the table.

If Beal wants out, Washington would be *insane* not to try to land Simmons. And if Lillard is disgruntled, even if Portland doesn't deal Lillard, they should be dealing CJ/Nance/picks as swiftly as they can.

2746095, Still some questions on that

Billy King was on WIP this morning
Camp opens 9.28
Ben's contract kicking in on 10.1 is ASSumed to be contingent on him reporting on 9.28

IMO, we hold until the trade deadline
2746109, I'm not surprised by this, actually.

With the caliber of contract lawyers an NBA team has, I'd be stunned if they don't have all sorts of emergency chutes to get out of paying players money.

I agree. Unless something fantastic comes out of the blue before then. Which seems unlikely, but you never know.
2746099, Ben...Watson is a bigger ?
Posted by bentagain, Thu Sep-09-21 04:31 PM
It's interesting that Watson has not yet been put on the exempt list
So I guess he's not playing...by choice?
Holdout + Legal issues = I'm not sure who's trading for that

Ben has issues, that can be fixed
The biggest issue with him currently in PHI is fit
We drafted Fultz, if he doesn't go bust...is Ben even a PG
Both Embiid and Ben made comments about the lane being available for Ben to drive
Ben said something about being more aggressive in the open court and finding lanes to drive to the hole before the halfcourt is setup
Embiid also said he moves out to 3 in order to give Ben more opportunities to drive
i.e. I think he would be better suited on a team that he can play small ball 5 on D and PF/PG on offense, like SAC

Ben.
