2744097, For anyone interested, here's my Top 40 Big Board:
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 04:48 PM
This isn't the order I'd draft them in, this is just a rough approximation of the order in which I'd value these dudes. The actual draft order would be team and need dependent. (Although I did record a whole mock draft episode of 2.1 Seconds to Madness breaking down all of these guys with Jim from the Three Man Weave podcast-- shameless plug!).

1. Cade Cunningham
2. Evan Mobley
3. Jalen Suggs
4. Jalen Green
5. Scottie Barnes
6. Moses Moody
7. Jonathan Kuminga
8. Josh Giddey
9. Franz Wagner
10. Davion Mitchell
11. Kai Jones
12. Alperen Sengun
13. Corey Kispert
14. James Bouknight
15. Chris Duarte
16. Jared Butler
17. Ziaire Williams
18. Trey Murphy
19. Deuce McBride
20. Tre Mann
21. Usman Garuba
22. Jaden Springer
23. Keon Johnson
24. Isaiah Jackson
25. Herb Jones
26. Ayo Dosunmu
27. Bones Hyland
28. Josh Primo
29. Sharife Cooper
30. Cam Thomas
31. Jalen Johnson
32. Jericho Sims
33. Day’Ron Sharpe
34. Quentin Grimes
35. Austin Reeves
36. BJ Boston
37. Josh Christopher
38. Neemias Queta
39. JT Thor
40. Filip Petrusev
2744111, I’ve seen a couple of mocks with us going Bouknight at 6
Posted by Dstl1, Thu Jul-29-21 04:58 PM
your breakdown of him sure doesn’t sound like a guy you want to take in the top 10.
2744112, If you think he can be a good NBA shooter, I get it.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 05:03 PM
He's definitely one of the better shot creators in the draft. And I can definitely see his mediocre shooting numbers as being largely contextual. I'm still concerned about the defense and the passing... but again, he had to do *everything* last year for a team that still ended up pretty good. So I get the sales pitch. If he can shoot 3s at an above-average clip, I think he can be an NBA starting 2 guard. If they're drafting him all the way at 6... then clearly OKC thinks that, lol. I'm a bit more skeptical than most, but I do understand the appeal.

(And I had him at 8 on my mock, because Orlando really needs consistent shot creators, so his primary skill definitely merits being drafted higher than I'd personally put him on my big board.)
2744119, I think he is streaky and the physicality of the league will be an issue
Posted by Castro, Thu Jul-29-21 05:22 PM
If he bulks up a bit, he could be a great shooter. He definitely has that blank face serial killer thing when he's locked in. But bump him a bit and his rhythm is gone and the shots off. Saw that time and time again with him at UCONN. All depends on where he ends up.
2744153, So he’s Hamidou Diallo?
Posted by Dstl1, Thu Jul-29-21 06:41 PM
Wildly athletic, fearless, can get his own shot, but not the greatest shooter, gets lost on defense at times?
2744167, Not nearly as athletic, definitely a better shooter imo.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 07:07 PM
>Wildly athletic, fearless, can get his own shot, but not the
>greatest shooter, gets lost on defense at times?
2744193, Not that type of athlete. Slippery, but not explosive. Rhythm game.
Posted by Castro, Thu Jul-29-21 07:41 PM
When he is in rhythm, he's lights out, but he's not physical enough to stay in rhythm when pressured (at this point). But he can get buckets.
2744118, you have Suggs ahead of Green? That's interesting.
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Jul-29-21 05:19 PM
2744121, its incorrect imo
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Jul-29-21 05:27 PM
i'd take Green 1 though
2744124, Green over Cade??
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 05:32 PM
That… is definitely something! Respect for the different take, I reckon, lol.
2744123, Green is higher upside… but I think Suggs translates to winning.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 05:31 PM
People keep comparing Jalen Green to guys like Zach LaVine, maybe Brad Beal… but it’s unclear that guys like that translate to true contention. Scoring 25+ per game is obviously a genuine skill, and it might be huge with the right team… but I can see a world in which he’s a 20+ PPG scorer on this rookie deal on a team that doesn’t crack 40 wins. (Green also still currently has some serious defense issues, much like LaVine.)

Whereas Suggs plays the most important position on the court, he’s a two way player, and he loves the big moment. If it wasn’t for Mobley’s absolutely absurd upside, I’d have Suggs second right today.
2744125, who does Suggs compare to?
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Jul-29-21 05:34 PM

2744130, I saw a Chauncey Billups comparison I liked.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 05:40 PM
Especially because I can see a world in which he’s maybe not a team’s leading scorer… but is a contending team’s captain, defender at the point of attack, most important overall player.

2744131, It took Chauncey a while to become Chauncey.
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Jul-29-21 05:47 PM
.
2744149, It took Larry Brown...and yup.
Posted by Castro, Thu Jul-29-21 06:30 PM
2744155, True. But Suggs was even more of a pure PG/defender in college IIRC.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 06:42 PM
Chauncey had to carry a mediocre roster in the Pac-12-- Suggs had to score, facilitate, get everyone involved, and strike in the big moments. I think Suggs is probably more ready to fill that role immediately in the NBA than Chauncey was.
2744191, Agreed.
Posted by Castro, Thu Jul-29-21 07:39 PM
2744120, Jerico Sims is my sleeper.
Posted by Castro, Thu Jul-29-21 05:26 PM
I agree that the Knicks take a shot and get him at 32.

Not convinced about McBride tho. I would prefer we go with a bigger guard, but dude is supposedly a pit bull. We'll see.
2744126, I just love a guy that knows his role.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 05:37 PM
Sims does everything we want a rim-running big to do in today’s NBA. No star upside, really, but should fit into a team’s PnR scheme beautifully.
2744132, Sims is an energy guy and I think he's an asshole. PERFECT.
Posted by Castro, Thu Jul-29-21 05:53 PM
He's a young Robin Lopez/Anderson Varejao type. I think he will develop some basics down the road that will solidify his role. Right now, he can be Marcus Camby NYK Year one- blocking shots, owning the boards and dunking on folks and when finishing on the break, won't look like a nerd standing over someone after he dunks on their ass.
2744142, Goddamnit, forgot Joe Wieskamp. I’d put him in the 30s.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 06:20 PM
2744160, this board looks good for dubs mocks. i've heard about them
Posted by poetx, Thu Jul-29-21 06:59 PM
possibly taking a shot on upside at 7 (kuminga being the dude for that), and getting a more ready to play guy at 14 (kispert, duarte).

one crazy trade-up had them giving 7, 14, wiseman and wiggins for cade. that ain't gonna happen, but is dude THAT good?

Posted by poetx, Thu Jul-29-21 07:35 PM
out of PnR.

i hope his shooting improves, if the dubs get him.

2744303, 39 of my top 40 got drafted.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 11:47 PM
And only 7 of my top 60 didn't get picked. Pretty good draft on the whole.

STUNNED Balsa got picked.
2744116, why is Malika Andrews so fine tho?!
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Jul-29-21 05:18 PM
2744128, Asking the important questions early.lol
Posted by Beezo, Thu Jul-29-21 05:37 PM
2744134, what will (Racial) Nichols do to derail the Malaika Momentum????
Posted by Castro, Thu Jul-29-21 05:58 PM
Mafamaticks got me calling her Racial. LOL
2744146, Lol
Posted by Beezo, Thu Jul-29-21 06:24 PM
2744136, fine for no damn reason. they need to fire her for that shit.
Posted by Reeq, Thu Jul-29-21 06:05 PM
2744137, fuck that, give her all Rachel shit lol
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Jul-29-21 06:08 PM
2744140, lol apparently malika is the favorite to host nba countdown.
Posted by Reeq, Thu Jul-29-21 06:17 PM
not exactly taking jobs from rachel but they coulda really fumbled that shit.
2744135, damn thats a good look for benny the butcher.

2744150, Man. I love it
Posted by DJR, Thu Jul-29-21 06:33 PM
2744157, this ESPN draft desk lineup is wack, you got Rece Davis a CFB guy...
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Jul-29-21 06:49 PM
Jay Bilas I guess brings the CBB analysis, Perk is good for the one liners and I don't who this other dude is...

Where is Jalen Rose and Jay Williams?

give us more Malika and Chiney, I'll even take the cuteness of Elle Duncan, all those women know they're shit too
2744162, Perk is awful.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 07:04 PM
Rece at least stays in his lane on nights like this. Bilas is fine, at least he watches and knows the pros and cons to the prospects. Jay Williams would've been fine, but he usually doesn't break down players as well as Bilas does. Jalen Rose doesn't watch college ball anymore and would essentially be Kenny Smith on this broadcast, aka not good.

Don't know who the last guy is yet, they haven't showed a wide shot in a minute.

EDIT: oh, the last guy is Mike Schmitz. He's fucking great. Terrific talent scout, worked for Givony for a long time, makes awesome videos on YouTube about players. I really like him. He's the best guy up there when it comes to player analysis.

.
2744169, It'll start Cade, Green, Mobley.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 07:09 PM
After that, could get interesting.

Also heard Wagner to Golden State at 7. Would be a really nice fit, especially if they can get his shot consistent--- and they're one of the best possible places to make that happen (if they don't trade him).
2744170, props to Cade for the classic draft day look too, he won't be clowned 20...
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Jul-29-21 07:09 PM
years from now lol
2744172, Had the Buffs too.....
Posted by blueeclipse, Thu Jul-29-21 07:15 PM
Cleeeeeeeean......
2744171, Perk: "Jalen Green reminds me of LaMelo Ball." Me: "?????"
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 07:14 PM
2744173, Perk is a fucking embarassment.....
Posted by blueeclipse, Thu Jul-29-21 07:16 PM
Said Cade was the most complete prospect since LeBron......C'mon man. I hope so but that's alot of kool aide
2744175, Perk's smart to continuously say "I agree with Schmitz," lol.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 07:17 PM
He's not even pretending to know things out there. He's just pretending he agrees with the guy who's a professional talent scout and player analyst. Maybe Perk's smarter than we thought! lol
2744178, This shit is terrible.lol
Posted by Beezo, Thu Jul-29-21 07:22 PM
2744180, i seriously stopped watching the shit he shows up on.
Posted by Reeq, Thu Jul-29-21 07:27 PM
just loud and ignorant and brings nothing to a discussion.

he fucked up my *entire* espn/espn2 morning routine.

2744176, Wizards officially taking the Lakers pick tonight too.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 07:18 PM
Kinda wonder if they'll try to deal 15 and 22 to move up.
2744179, Whooooa, Scottie Barnes at 4.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 07:25 PM
They're all in on the versatility. Barnes, Anunoby, Siakam.
2744181, yes. that is a position-diverse ass lineup right there.

.
2744185, So short-sighted. He should stay imo.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 07:33 PM
No other roster is gonna plan a scheme around Siakam. If he wants to be the third option somewhere else and try to fit a different scheme, okay, I guess.
2744200, T-Dot is a lot to handle if you become the man
Posted by Castro, Thu Jul-29-21 07:50 PM
a city by definition where every dime is exotic and over the top and in the space of two years you go from being the 3rd man off the bench energy guy to the focal point of the offense, all star, etc and you help win a chip?

Not everyone is built for that (T-Mac). If he went to say, the Spurs, he continues to improve. If he ends up in a large market in the U.S. he will regress.
2744371, what? none of that makes sense...

2744186, Zero chance. Orlando's tossing Cole Anthony in the bushes.

Fultz too. Tossing them all in the bushes. They lucked the fuck out.

2744195, RJ Hampton will stay. At least one of Cole/Fultz gonna be bushed.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 07:43 PM
And if they wanna trade someone, Cole's got more value imo.
2744213, it will be interesting, that Fultz contract might be hard to move.

2744190, JOSH GIDDEY AT SIX! The fun continues!!
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 07:37 PM
They're hoping he can be Luka-esque long run. Love it. Love the dice roll here. I saw a Lonzo Ball comparison I like-- the upside could be real high.
2744194, 😑
Posted by Dstl1, Thu Jul-29-21 07:42 PM
.
2744196, It's gonna work out, dude. I like Presti's call here.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 07:44 PM
Kuminga's got higher upside but a lot dicier in terms of where his floor is. I like putting a high-IQ distributor like Giddey on the floor with the young dudes. Plus, if they keep Shai, might be a hell of a backcourt.
2744197, Kuminga to Warriors. Very interesting fit.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 07:47 PM
Can't shoot, can't pass, can't really defend yet... but Golden State's a great place for him to learn. He probably won't play the next year or two, I wouldn't think-- or he gets dealt, obviously. Maybe Warriors just think he's got the most upside in a trade.
2744205, it is interesting for those reasons. he supposedly has among the
Posted by poetx, Thu Jul-29-21 07:55 PM
highest upside of anyone on the board.

we'll see who they go with at 14.

interesting that the new assistant they got (from TOR) is big on player development and working with international players.

definitely gives them another dynamic player on the second unit, someone who can run the floor and finish.

Posted by RandomFact, Thu Jul-29-21 07:52 PM

2744206, So with Kuminga, do the Dubs move Wiggins or Oubre?
Posted by Castro, Thu Jul-29-21 07:55 PM
One of them is gone.
2744209, Oubre's gone, but Kuminga isn't ready to play next year.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jul-29-21 08:01 PM
He's a big time project. Maybe spot minutes off the bench but that's it.
2744216, Oubre gone (FA). we need to keep wigs, tho. 20 pts and defense.
Posted by poetx, Thu Jul-29-21 08:11 PM
and hopefully he improves even more next year when he doesn't have to be the #2 scoring option.

i had really hoped they could keep oubre, b/c he played well this year after he got used to things. but he's made himself some money.

Then Memphis drafts a big time project who could really flourish but could also completely bust and almost certainly won't be ready to play in the next year or two. Okay again!

I think Knicks fans should take that as a good sign, that perhaps they're saving that money because they think a big free agent is incoming.
2744279, I think they believe they can get McBride or Dosonmu at 32
Posted by Castro, Thu Jul-29-21 09:50 PM
Small chance we get Sims at 58 or whatever that last pick is....

Unless we are getting Malik Monk (who I think is going to continue to improve...given the minutes) or Lonzo or Schroeder....I can't see them getting anyone else....but who knows. I think Monk is a strong possibility because of the UK network.
2744280, They took Grimes at 25.

Sometimes those dudes tumble, especially if folks don't trust the jumper. I think he should've gone end of first. Great value where you got him-- and with a chip on his shoulder at that.
2744312, I think he ends up being the best option to pair with Lavine.

2744291, Thibs got his dude. McBride will be our future PG.
Posted by Castro, Thu Jul-29-21 11:00 PM

2744313, Are any of the kids that the Knicks drafted decent distributors?
Posted by Numba_33, Fri Jul-30-21 07:41 AM
I know that's asking for a lot being that last night was a shallow draft class and the Knicks had low draft picks.

Main reason I am asking is because the Knicks desperately need someone to make Randle's job of initiating the offense much much easier, especially in slowed half court sets.

It the guards the Knicks selected are similar to Quickley in that they'll look to score first, I suppose that would be somewhat of an improvement, but it doesn't address with the Knicks need to solve their offensive problems IMO.
2744329, McBride is, yeah.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jul-30-21 10:01 AM
I wrote a decent chunk about him in the Justivity post, but I’m high on him.
2744330, Based on what you wrote
Posted by Numba_33, Fri Jul-30-21 10:24 AM
he sounds like the kind of player Phil Jackson thought he was going to get when he drafted Frank Ntilikina, except Ntilikina so far has shown he offers no threat on the offensive side of the ball.

Since this McBride dude was drafted so low, I'm going to assume he's not ready to run an offense yet and Thibs mainly likes him because of his defensive skills. Sounds like the type to run with the second unit off the bench.

So unless Quickley made HUGE strides in the offseason in terms orchestrating the offense, it appears the Knicks will have to go the free agent route to get a starting point guard.
2744334, While I doubt he's a starter right away...
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jul-30-21 10:49 AM
... I'll say his PG skills are definitely going under the radar in this draft because he came into school with the perception of "combo guard." But, like, last year, his A:TO ratio was one of the best in the NCAA IIRC.
2744941, If Jerico makes some free throws Knicks gonna have to redo his
Posted by Castro, Mon Aug-09-21 07:58 PM
contract. He is already laying cats out with solid, Steven Adams type picks, and the lob game with him already keeps the crowd on the edge of their seats. He is rebounding well in traffic and he has show a terrific touch around the basket. GOON!!!
2744304, Lakers sign two-ways for Joel Ayayi and Austin Reaves.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jul-30-21 12:00 AM
These are two of the best 3-and-D perimeter guys left in the draft-- I had Reaves Top 40, Ayayi Top 45. I think both have a non-zero chance to make the roster, considering the need for shooting there.
2744306, Kyree Walker should've went to the G League
Posted by Kira, Fri Jul-30-21 12:55 AM
Now he's on pace for a Liangelo Ball career path.

Koby drafted Evan so now he needs to get rid of Kevin Love.
2744315, who was the last player waiting in the arena to be drafted?

2744365, Daishen Nix doing summer league in Philly
Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Fri Jul-30-21 05:25 PM
I really think him and his game have an opportunity to make an impact at the next level. He just knows how to play basketball. The shooting concerns are there— but IMO his elite handle and court vision make up for it— especially if you project him as a role player and not your main pg
