In the US, there’s a nuanced, but fairly clear series of conditions that make references to skin color not a one-size-fits-all kind of thing (eg calling someone a red bone vs calling someone the name of that football team).

I imagine it’s different elsewhere and different cultural sensitivities might create different interpretations of this.
