Celtics open
Stott out in Portland

Breaking: Clifford out in Orlando.

Scott Brooks, next?
2739301, The Clifford one is insane. What are they thinking?
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Jun-05-21 12:28 PM
They make two playoffs with a *lot* of young players. Then Isaac gets hurt and the front office trades Vuc, Gordon, and Fournier... like, what did they expect this season?

He's a really good player development guy too, and they just started what's essentially a reboot with nothing but young players... unless they have a *better* player development guy for the young guards and bigs, I don't know what they expect.

It's easy to just look at Clifford's W-L record and go "oh he sucks," but I would argue that he absolutely overachieved with the rosters he was given. Like, those Charlotte teams, the three best players during that tenure were Kemba, 30 year old Al Jefferson, and Batum. And the fourth best would be... Marvin Williams? One year, their third leading scorer was *Frank Kaminsky.* And he got Charlotte to the playoffs twice! And he got a team led by Nikola Vucevic and Aaron Gordon to the playoffs twice in three years! Bananas.

Clifford will be on another staff-- or have another head coaching job-- by the fall. I really hope the Magic have a plan.

Kidd has had HC jobs before. Why take on a lottery team in Cleveland to develop their young players then be fired for a white coach once they're ready to compete like what happened in Milwaukee?

When he can chill in Los Angeles and wait on Vogel to be fired? Its not just players that like being in LA.

I'm sure they've tried to reach out to Mike Brown again but he's like "Nah, I'm good."

At this point he's not going to take a beginner HC lottery team job. He'd rather stay where he is sitting behind Steve Kerr who could retire permanently at any time.

It doesn't take weeks to assess a five-year period of mediocrity.

The widely panned Randy Wittman did more with this team for much less money, and was let go of swiftly.

Brooks seems to have the endorsement of Russ and Beal so my guess is that he'll re-sign for a couple years of additional middling performance.

I also don't think the roster as presently constructed is capable of good defense unless the existing players take serious leaps.

So if they aren't gonna defend? They better be Top 3 in pace, Top 5 in scoring rate. And if any coach can do that with this roster, it's D'Antoni.

I dunno if he goes back to ESPN, but I could absolutely see him joining them with Meadowlark Media. He’s right up their alley.

Despite this, Bird and Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh did not hold Carlisle responsible for the Pacers' lackluster performances in the past two seasons, and showed it in October 2006 when they signed Carlisle to a multiyear contract extension. I think Luka had the same problem with Carlisle, at some point he's going to have to learn to be coached. Kidd has a strong relationship with Dirk, Lebron and other players around the league so maybe that will convince Luka to listen to him. Luka was 14 when Kidd retired so he probably didn't see him play much live but if he is a student of the game like they said he should be familiar with Kidd's career.

Even though he apparently has a relationship with Chauncey, he's pissed that ownership/management didn't interview any of the candidates he recommended (besides Kidd, the others were Hammon and D'Antoni; no idea who Dame wanted them to talk to). And now that it's re-surfaced that there were rape allegations against Billups back in 1997 (honestly had never heard of this, but the circumstances seem... complicated), Dame is apparently even more unhappy.

I don't know if this leads to Denver changed their mind or Dame forcing a trade or nothing at all happening, but it does seem like a mess in the making.
2741616, I just read a detailed rundown of the allegations against Billups
Posted by Soldado, Sun Jun-27-21 07:00 PM
and the legal proceedings.

This could get really ugly if the media decides to dive in again and bring a lot of it back to light.

The woman was admitted to the hospital with injuries consistent with rape and Mercer and Billups had some pretty big holes in their stories. Billups claimed he only got some consensual head from the accuser in his car. Mercer claimed he got some consensual head at Billups house. Both claimed they were never at Antoine Walker's house, where the accuser claimed she was actually taken and raped. And neither Mercer or Billups could account for how the accuser ended up in Walker's house or how she woke up naked in one of the beds.

There was actually a point in the litigation where Walker filed a counter-complaint against Mercer and Billups. It was sealed by the court, so we don't know the substance of it. But, a judge ruled earlier that Walker should be removed from the suit since he didn't knowingly walk in and witness the rape (which the accuser claimed). The judge claimed if he thought it was consensual then he was under no obligation to intervene. This was overturned by a judge at a higher court, but it's still notable because it would seem to indicate that Walker at least acknowledged that they were present at his house. And maybe the complaint he filed against had to do with those contradictory details in the story.
2741619, it was almost 25 years ago, Chauncey has had multiple careers since...
Posted by ThaTruth, Sun Jun-27-21 07:10 PM
then. Why is it coming up now when he's a head coach candidate?

Luke Walton has a sexual assault case going back the last 7 years and he is on his second head coaching job with a losing record and nobody talks about it.
2741621, I'm just saying IF the media wants to make a big deal of it again
Posted by Soldado, Sun Jun-27-21 07:25 PM
there's a lot of tread on that tire.

Don't forget, it was the renewed media coverage that encouraged a judge to unseal testimony from a settled Bill Cosby lawsuit because of the "public interest". His comments from that suit ultimately became the underpinning of the criminal case against him for his (unrelated) most recent sexual assault allegation that he was convicted of.

Billups is in the clear criminally due to SOL. But if anything (else) gets revealed from the accuser's lawsuit against him Walker's complaint against him, things could get bad for him.

That's all I'm saying.
2741627, I hear all that and I still say Luke Walton's stuff is way more recent...
Posted by ThaTruth, Sun Jun-27-21 08:50 PM
and nobody talks about it
2741660, I'm very curious how Disney/ABC/ESPN will cover this history
Posted by Numba_33, Mon Jun-28-21 08:34 AM
if in fact Portland decides to hire him. Billups was a pre-game/halftime corespondent for Disney/ABC/ESPN about 3-4 years ago if memory serves me correct. It'll be interesting to see how critical they will be since they felt it wise to hire the man.
2741662, yeah like I say its weird that all this comes out when he's about to be...

a head coach when other people's stuff is completely ignored.

I feel like if certain people wanted that it would've happened already
2741669, That’s when they still thought Kuz was good though
Posted by DJR, Mon Jun-28-21 09:19 AM
And Melo had a nice role in Portland so it made sense to go back there last year.
2741608, Penny in the mix for Orlando?

https://theathletic.com/news/memphis-penny-hardaway-serious-candidate-for-orlando-magic-head-coach-sources/LMUsHuTlo870

we'll see why kind of dirt from 20+ years ago they try to dig up on him...
2741612, He's been a dreadful offensive coach in the NCAA.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Jun-27-21 06:38 PM
He's basically an "all defense, no offense" kind of guy. So I get why Orlando, with the athletic pieces they've put together, along with Penny's history there, would be interested in his defense at least...

... but he's never made a tournament despite major talent advantage in his conference. So... I'm skeptical. If they wanted a former player turned college coach, Juwan Howard is miles better. (Though he's obviously not an Orlando legend, if that's important to them.)
2741613, he can hire Terry Stotts as his assistant, problem solved
Posted by ThaTruth, Sun Jun-27-21 06:51 PM
2741617, or Alvin Gentry

They'll be a Top 3 team in the East for the next few years. Just need time for more of that young talent to develop.
2742365, Glad they got it done ASAP and ain't string him along for a bit.

Rick Carlisle got a job he didn’t deserve that’s enough

Wizards need to hire Mike Brown

I’m hoping for him or Sam. Sam seems like a no brainer for Washington.
2742822, right for some reason they say the Wizards have "ruled out" Cassell

2743195, so were the Pacers the only team to hire a white coach?
Posted by ThaTruth, Fri Jul-16-21 05:22 PM
2743432, so who's on the hot seat next season? Walton? Daigneault? Rivers?
Posted by ThaTruth, Tue Jul-20-21 04:34 PM
Finch? Bickerstaff? Silas? Snyder? Jenkins? Donovan? Casey?

who's on deck?

Darvin Ham is Budenholzer's top assistant, if they win he might get some looks, Charles Lee on that staff has also had his name thrown around...

Thibs' top assistant with Knicks Johnnie Bryant may get some attention...

I know the current trend is towards younger coaches but I'd love to see Mike Brown get another shot and he's only 51...

I'd like to see Mark Jackson get another shot but other circumstances may prevent that...

Kenny Atkinson is still out there and a lot of people seem to think highly of him...

Sam Cassell's name was hot for a minute but he's still out there...

David Vanterpool was supposed to have the Minnesota job, he's credited with developing Dame and CJ in Portland...

I'd like to see Fizdale get another shot...

Could anybody entice Juwan Howard to leave Michigan? or Penny from Memphis? I feel like if the Detroit & Memphis jobs opened up respectively they may get those guys' attention...

Stackhouse's name has popped up here and there...

Would Calipari make the jump at this point?

Pat Ewing's name was once on the NBA coaching radar...

Will Pop step aside for Becky Hammon? Will another woman get a shot? Will Hardy is another guy on Pop's staff who get's some attention...

Does Lloyd Pierce get another shot?

Adriain Griffin's name has been out there for a while. Its funny how some guys are the "hot name" then are kind of forgotten....

Other former players in the assistant coaching ranks are people like Nick Van Exel, Mark Bryant, Jarron Collins, Ed Pickney, Randy Brown, Greg Buckner, Howard Eisley, Popeye Jones, Tim Hardaway...

2749889, Way too early rakings of NBA coaches in their first season?
Posted by ThaTruth, Tue Nov-02-21 01:09 PM
Chauncey Billups _ Portland
Rick Carlisle - Indiana
Willie Green - New Orleans
Jason Kidd _ Phoenix
Jamahl Mosley - Orlando
Ime Udoka - Boston
Wes Unseld Jr - Washington

did I miss anybody? I know technically this is Nate McMillian's first year officially as head coach in Atlanta but I didn't count him after last years playoff run.
2749893, Kidd is in Dallas.
