European Super League: Liverpool fan groups to remove all flags from Kop

By James Pearce

Liverpool supporters’ group Spion Kop 1906 are removing all their banners and flags from the Kop in protest at the club’s “disgraceful” decision to sign up to a new European Super League.

It means the iconic stand, which has been adorned with tributes to legendary players, managers and trophy successes during the pandemic, is set to be bare for Saturday’s home Premier League clash with Newcastle United.
What has been said?

A Spion Kop 1906 spokesman told The Athletic: “We’ve been in contact with the club today to make it clear we want all the banners and the flags all taken down as soon as possible. We’re taking our support is off the table from now.

“We feel we can no longer give our support to a club which puts financial greed above the integrity of the game.

“It’s disgraceful and absolutely disgusting what the owners have done. We don’t know how it’s got this far without fans being consulted.

"They have sold their soul.

"No Liverpool fan could get on board with this Super League. It would be good to hear the manager and the players come out and back the fans on this.”

A statement from the group added: “The new format is a blatant plan for the beneficial clubs to seize even more power and revenue from an already lucrative business model.

“Owners, clubs, management, do you really care about a club’s best interests or just the bank accounts? I think we already know the answer but now is the time to think of years of tradition and do the right thing.”
Have other groups commented?

Fellow supporters’ group Spirit of Shankly are also backing the plan to have the flags and banners removed from the Kop as they make a stand against owners Fenway Sports Group’s decision to join the new league.

Spirit of Shankly tweeted: “As fan representatives we are appalled and completely oppose this decision. FSG have ignored fans in their relentless and greedy pursuit of money. Football is ours, not theirs. Our football club is ours, not theirs.”

Liverpool fans attached two large black banners on to the gates of Anfield outside the Kop on Monday morning. One read ‘Shame On You. RIP LFC 1892 - 2021.’ The other: ‘LFC Fans Against European Super League.’
What is the European Super League?

Twelve European clubs announced their intention to form a breakaway competition on Sunday night.

The teams, who made a joint statement to confirm plans of forming a new European Super League, consist of the following clubs: AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur.
How will the Super League work?

The clubs say that 15 founding clubs - the 12 who have reached the agreement plus three who they expect to join - will be joined by five other teams who qualify each season.

They say the games will be played in midweek, starting in August, with teams playing home and away fixtures in two groups of ten, with the top three in each group automatically qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Teams finishing fourth and fifth will then compete in a two-legged play-off for the remaining quarter-final positions. A two-leg knockout format will be used to reach the final at the end of May, which will be staged as a single fixture at a neutral venue.

The clubs said that a women's league will also be launched "as soon as practicable" after the start of the men's competition, but provided no further details.
