2733437, Most def...ESPN says it saves us $19 mil against the cap

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/31051305/sources-tom-brady-tampa-bay-buccaneers-agree-4-year-extension

TAMPA, Fla. -- Quarterback Tom Brady has reached agreement with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a four-year contract extension that voids to a one-year extension, sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter. The deal ties Brady to Tampa through the 2022 season, sources said.

The move saves the Buccaneers $19 million against the cap this year, sources said. The additional voidable years are there to defray the cost. It was another effort from Brady to keep as much of the team together as possible.

As of Friday morning, prior to Brady's new deal, the Bucs were $7.756 million over the $182.5 million salary cap, after using the franchise tag on wide receiver Chris Godwin and re-signing inside linebacker Lavonte David to a two-year extension.

Like Brady's deal, David's contract includes voidable years, something the Bucs have not used in well over a decade. David will only count $3.5 million against the salary cap in 2021, despite playing on a two-year deal worth $25 million because his contract includes three voidable years. The drawbacks to doing voidable years, however, mean that they'll essentially be borrowing from the future. But they recognize that Brady's window is a small one, even with an extra year on what was originally a two-year contract.

Brady's deal gives the Bucs space to try and bring back outside linebacker Shaq Barrett, who notched 4.0 sacks in the postseason and led the NFL with 19.5 sacks last year.

But Barrett isn't the only one the Bucs have to think about. Tight end Rob Gronkowski, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, wide receiver Antonio Brown, kicker Ryan Succop and running back Leonard Fournette are all set to become free agents on March 17 if new deals can't be reached.

In February, Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said that he and coach Bruce Arians would be "elated" if they could extend Brady.

Brady, 43, has previously said his goal was to play until age 45, but he said during the week of the Super Bowl that he would now consider playing beyond 45. Brady will be 44 next season, and tacking on a year to his deal keeps him under contract through his 45th birthday. Family will play a major role in determining if, in fact, Brady plays beyond that.

In his first season with the Buccaneers, Brady won his seventh Super Bowl, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 in the NFL's first Super Bowl played, and won, by the hosting team.
2733442, You see it...
Posted by CyrenYoung, Fri Mar-12-21 01:00 PM
..saving damn-near 20 mil in cap space.

They won't be able to bring back everyone, but if Brady's there, Gronk will likely follow suit. Not sure if they'll be able to retain Suh's services, but Barrett earned every penny coming to him.

2733447, Unfortunately I think they'll have to cut Brate to make this work
Posted by dillinjah, Fri Mar-12-21 02:10 PM
Presuming Gronk comes back, I'd rather trade OJ Howard instead of cutting Brate, but that doesn't bring the cap relief cutting Brate will.

Hopefully Suh will take a pay cut to stay (we'll see about that one)
2733454, a healthy OJ with Gronk, plus those receivers could be nasty...

I guess healthy OJ is the question, though.
2733521, Indeed...
Posted by CyrenYoung, Sat Mar-13-21 06:47 PM
OJ Howard's health moving forward is the real question mark here.

We know his potential is great, but the best ability is availability. I'm not a fan of athletes (esp Black athletes) taking pay cuts for these teams owned by billionaires, but if they can somehow manage to find the compromise in contract structure, I'm all for it.

Either way, Licht & Arians have their work cut out for them this offseason.

- the other available names are boring and ass ... Darnold, Mariota, you can have them.

This will be fun. Terry’s gonna get like 22 targets a game. We’re going to score, something we struggled mightily to do last year. There will be an after-Thanksgiving game that we really need to have where Fitz throws like 3 picks in the first quarter against the Eagles, and it’ll be gut wrenching. But in the meantime this is fun. They’ll be an enjoyable team to watch. I’d love to add Kenny Golladay or Juju.

This.

I’m always embarrassed when fantasy football folks are shocked at the inevitable 3 picks/get benched Fitz game. But yes, WFT hasn’t been fun since RG Knee and even then the overbearing tension of RG vs Shanny didn’t let it be all out fun like this will be for a while. And with the rest of the division being themselves, WFT could get off to a crazy good start.

Well, they sure did bring in a gang of names. Cheap qb should equal hella names on both sides of the ball. It will be interesting to see what they’re trying to do with Cam this year.

To me, they still need one no bullshit adult wr. Like at least a Marvin Jones.

If Cam isn't crippled and/or completely done, this looks like they have a stew going over there. One more 'talented' RB would be nice and those seem kinda inexpensive. Nothing crazy. Just like a Phillip Lindsey or Damien Williams. Someone who can generally play to replace James White and the inevitable Rex Burkhead injury.

Or if everyone is gonna fall too far back, a 1 year deal to Kenny G would be fun too. Something! I want see folks go to town about getting better.
2733622, Patriots are suddenly a very interesting case study
Posted by Tiger Woods, Tue Mar-16-21 10:38 AM
seems Belichick knows that the most efficient way to get FAs you like is guarantee them money. They upgraded almost a dozen positions in an immediate and major way largely by guaranteeing money right out the gate and not wasting anyone's time. If they F around and get Golladay, I bet it's like 18 a year for 4 years with $60MM guaranteed. They're being ruthlessly efficient in their approach.

Most of these teams still like to inflate their numbers but guarantee lesser dollars, they think they're shrewder than they are. Really it's just a matter of making it more complicated than it has to be. There's not a lot of smart men in football.

If this team wins 10+ games this year we may have just witnessed a paradigm shift.

Keeping Verret is huge, even it's for a one-year deal. Hopefully this helps eventually signing him long term. Juszczyk for five years is good as well.

Obviously keeping Trent Williams is now the team's #1 priority, and they appear to be ready to offer him $20 million a year. K'Waun Williams is the next after that.

Borne is gone to the Pats, which kinda sucks, because I liked our WR core. But we really can't keep everyone.

After Bakhtiari got his deal, $20 million a year wasn't going to be enough.

Honestly, he was probably the best player in the free agent class, so he's worth it. And re-signing has always been the top priority, so glad they got it done.

This probably means Williams and everyone else is gone, but we'll handle it.

Dalton is openly and regularly bad. He’s a poor man’s Kirk Cousins. This will be on display again in Chicago. He should be decent enough to keep Robinson statistically good but I would not expect anything good in important games, if he plays well enough to get the Bears into important games.

I worry that Russ could have a few lean years on the way where he’s hurt more often, but he’s been really good for a while. He does the work and his deep ball is still top shelf. But I can get not wanting to give up half a team to get him.

us from a Herschel Walker type situation.

I'm guessing Carolina just decided they weren't gonna pay a WR with the way folks are loving on incoming WRs right now. Horrid teams like the Jets and WFT had no such qualms. And really, I don't blame them. They don't trust that they can draft well beyond the early 1st round no brainer players and rightfully so. Their teams are NOT destinations for anyone with options. So they have to fork over the money or get stuck with nothing.

I'm gonna keep looking at Baltimore and waiting for them to get a real WR of some kind on the scene.

That's a good backup landing spot for him. If he accidentally gets to play and makes a few throws, he'll get to start again. If a Glennon can, Mitch can. If Fitzpatrick can, Mitch can.

I know..we're supposed to just to going over actual transactions, but I'm wondering!

Did he think he was gonna get a 4 year, 80 million type deal, he's not and now the league is just waiting for his price to go down?

Is he still hurt and the league has found out but the Shefty type folks have not spoken on it?

If he's healthy and his market is just low now cuz a graph somewhere says 'don't pay WRs..its fine', what in the world is Baltimore waiting on to throw him 2 for 20 while Lamar is still cheap!? I'm still salty that they didn't sign Marvin Jones for that 2 for 14.5 that he took from the doggone Jags of all folks.

He had better offers from Baltimore but they dont pass that much and his stats would prolly be ass juice

KC has the QB but how many balls would he get with all the talent on that team. Plus JuJu kinda slow and would look like a snail in that offense.

I was shocked as well but he isn’t a legit #1.

Posted by mrhood75, Wed Mar-24-21 03:45 PM
Wow, did the Niners really re-sign just about all of their essential free-agents to come back next year? Verrett, Trent & K'Waun, Juszczyk, Moseley, DJ Jones, and Dontae Johnson are all coming back, plus bringing in Mack from Atlanta was huge.

The only thing is with some of these guys signed to 1-year deals, they're really going to have to make their move this signing. So they either have to be convinced that Jimmy G is going be healthy all season, or they need to have something in their pocket just in case. And a trade for Watson likely isn't happening now for obvious reasons.

Bwahahahha!

I’m watching DB Super right now. Hercule has me rolling every time he shows up. I wish Brady was that ridiculous and entertaining. Instead, he just shows up to places and the teams are somehow much better off with him than without him.

Folks don’t seem to realize what a failure that 11-5 Matt Cassel Pats season was.
2734277, just by not getting worse, the Bucs got better
Posted by Tiger Woods, Thu Mar-25-21 01:03 PM
I don't see a team in the NFC who got markedly better. Certainly not better enough, to rival the defending Champions.

Roster-wise, the only potential rivals are the Niners and Rams. Obviously there's A LOT up in the air right now, but if the Niners could get Deshaun Watson well then you can just pencil them in for the NFC Championship game opposite Tampa. Hell, I may even say the same for drafting Justin Fields. Carolina is a wild card too to me, if they could get Fields or Watson they're probably good for 10 or 11 wins.

NFC rosters in order to me is
1. Tampa (by a wide margin currently)
2. Niners
3. Packers
4. Rams
5. ...Arizona?

there's some ass teams in the NFC right now, damn. Dallas defensive talent is as woeful as their offensive talent is impressive. The Packers get to play Jared Goff, Kirk Cousins, and Andy Dalton six total times next year wtf. Outside of Russ and the pass catchers, Seattle's roster leaves a lot to be desired.

NFC is a wasteland. Compare that to the AFC: Chiefs, Chargers, Colts, Titans, Dolphins, Bills, Ravens, Steelers (even with Ben, yuck), and Browns (lowkey maybe 2nd most loaded roster after KC).

The window for the team is right now. Especially with re-signing a bunch of the guys to one year deals. So using the pick to draft a guy who'll probably be ready in a couple of years would be strange.

I don't know if there's an absolutely can't miss position player in the draft that's worth giving up three first-round picks (I'm honestly asking here). If the Watson "situation" wasn't happening, I'd guess this would be them getting ready to make a move for him.

then it'd have to be loading up to make a play for Russell...or Deshaun. No one else, including any high level position player in the draft (like you mentioned) could be worth this move. Russell Wilson on the cotdamn 49ers, with Shanahan pulling the strings is a SB, man. They're getting back so much on defense, without doing anything else. They would be so straight, on both sides of the ball.

Weird trade. It’s kind of a lot for Darnold but not if they can rehab/rescue his career while he’s still on his rookie deal.

And of course, that means Teddy is effed the ayyy as far as being a starter goes. Raw deal considering the most expensive guy on their offense barely played at all and the line wasn’t exactly strong. Sucks for Theodore Jam.

Everyone needs to be fired, yes. Trading away more of the teams future (3+ first-rounders) for the right to draft Trey Lance is idiocy to me

Just because you really want a franchise QB, doesn't meant there is one to get. Please patch the other glaring holes in this roster and worry about a QB when there is one to get without gambling everything out of desperation.

For those wondering what the Bucs are going to do with their first-round draft pick a couple weeks from now, I think it’s safe to say you can scratch running back off the list of possibilities.

The Bucs signed former Bengal Giovani Bernard to a one-year deal, according to a Twitter post by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Bernard has played in Cincinnati since the Bengals drafted him in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. While the 29-year-old hasn’t posted any ridiculous numbers or earned any huge accolades, the former Tar Heel has a reputation as one of the most productive and solid receiving backs in the league—even with his turning 30 years old in November—and with Tom Brady’s previous success with pass catching backs such as James White, it could be a sign that Bernard’s production is about to take a huge jump with the Bucs.

The deal is one of many huge offseason moves by the Bucs in their pursuit for a second straight Super Bowl, and allows the Bucs to fill out the rest of their roster in the draft.

Tampa Bay may have brought back all 22 starters from the Super Bowl, but it was also incredibly fortunate to not have any major players miss significant time last season. That’s unlikely this season.

As for any future signings for the Bucs, look out for the receiver position, as Antonio Brown is unsigned along with free agents like Dez Bryant and Josh Gordon. While TB12 has chemistry and history with Brown, his legal situation with a sexual assault case scheduled to go to trial in December makes signing him risky. Brown is also reportedly seeking more money than the Bucs are willing (or able) to offer with their salary cap restrictions.

Gordon is a question mark himself, as off-the-field problems with substance abuse have plagued what could have been a great career. But, he does have prior experience with Brady, as he caught the GOAT’s 500th career TD pass in New England when Gordon was on the Patriots for the 2019 season. He is currently playing for the Zappers in the new Fan Controlled Football (FCF) league, but given the opportunity to break back into the NFL and win a ring with the Bucs should entice the former Cleveland Brown to take his talents to Tampa Bay.

Bryant seems to have the least amount of baggage, but the former Cowboy had an incredibly quiet 2020 season in Baltimore, where he only racked up six catches in as many games. While he doesn’t have any off-the-field problems that could prevent him from playing, he’s 32 and is coming off an Achilles injury that seems to be a lingering problem. He’d certainly be a downgrade from Brown or even Gordon.

However, the big news was the signing of Bernard. Bucs fans can celebrate, as Brady continues to have more weapons than anyone else in the league, with an offensive line that is still one of the best in football.
2735376, That works. Hopefully he can contribute more than Shady did

Detroit and Minnesota are never a concern.

The only concern are the packers, and Rodgers’ future
isn’t clear, and their defense hasn’t improved.

If we can get solid play at the QB position, we have a shot.

The bears lost 4 games by a TD or less, and a few of those
were in the last couple of minutes. 12-4 could have happened.

Had Naggy not panicked by sending Trubisky to the bench,
we would not have endured Foles’ losing streak. We would have
won those games. Trubisky won the last 3 games for us to
get into the PO.

And if I’m not mistaken, you said we weren’t going to make the PO
last year.

2735787, Open your eyes
Posted by COOLEHMAGAZINE, Mon Apr-19-21 08:20 AM
They were 8-8 last year and only made the playoffs because the field was expanded.

The Bears are closer to the Lions than they are to the Packers.

And yeah, Trubisky definitely would have won those games, lol, that's why the Bears sent him packing in the offseason.

It's no point arguing with you because your opinion is rooted in some different world in your head, not the games that actually happen. Bears schedule is absolutely brutal, the roster is piecemeal and the coach is incompetent. Soooo... if you want to make any type of a bet, let me know, I wouldn't hesitate for a second. Doesn't have to be money either, loser can just stop posting here for some extended period of time, whatever you can think of.

His FA moves have mostly been bad.

All this has already been said and you had no answer. His dumb moves is why we are keeping Jimmy Graham and Robert Quinn, two guys who looked washed last year, but had to cut a Pro Bowl corner in Kyle Fuller.

HA! You think I'm backtracking because they got Fields?

No left tackle, a middling receiver room, no #1 corner and the #2 spot helmed by a second year guy with injury problems. I have no qualms saying that the Bears will not have a winning record next year. Which is good actually cause then maybe Fields gets to work with a coach who knows what he is doing, sooner than later.

Put a number to their record next year or STFU

Texans going down in flames. Colts with a gang of changes. Jags probably going to have freshman blues under Tiger Trev... no excuses.

I think Vrabel got it as far as defense is concerned if people are healthy.
2739419, Anyone else amazed at the low price for Hopkins and Julio?

Like i get it, with the salaries...but my mind is having trouble processing Julio Jones and Hopkins being traded for 2nd and 3rd round picks. Seems wild to me.
2740433, what happened to Louis Riddick getting a GM job? at the end of last...

season on ESPN last year they kept announcing that he was interviewing for all these GM jobs in places like Detroit, Houston and Jacksonville and on his last MNF appearance he basically stepped down before he had a job. I'm guessing Houston wasn't as inviting after the Deshaun drama and Urban taking over in J-ville kind of deaded that situation and who really wants to work for the Lions? I guess he's returning to MNF for 2021 so maybe he will talk about it then.
