2731184, NFL off-season post
Posted by Dstl1, Sat Jan-30-21 01:02 PM
Figure we should do one for player transactions. Especially with a possible, unprecedented amount of QB movement.

We know that something is going to have to give with Deshaun and Houston.

As of this morning, it’s being reported that a Matthew Stafford deal is very close.

It is now being reported that the Rams have had discussions with teams about trading Jared Goff...lol. I knew McVeigh had soured on dude.
2731198, McVeigh and the Rams GM have really fucked that organization
Posted by calij81, Sat Jan-30-21 04:23 PM
Dealing for Stafford would just hasten their demise into irrelevance. Stafford isn’t an improvement over Goff and he is older and just as expensive. This seems like a panic move by McVeigh. Plus, this means the Rams will be giving up picks and that has been one of the bigger issues and reasons for their decline. The Rams have traded a lot of picks over the last two seasons for players that aren’t even on the team anymore.

Goff needs to get on a new team and a fresh start.
2731214, You're actually saying Stafford isn't a better QB than Jared Geoff??
Posted by Sofian_Hadi, Sat Jan-30-21 10:24 PM
Like, you're really saying that with no sarcasm?
2731218, yeah, I'm not in the Matt Stafford fan club...
Posted by Dstl1, Sat Jan-30-21 10:41 PM
but he's clearly just a better player than Goff...in every way.
2731220, I’m saying at Staffords current age he isn’t an upgrade over Goff
Posted by calij81, Sat Jan-30-21 10:51 PM
I don’t see the Rams going any further than they did this year with Stafford.

Stafford isn’t taking the Rams to playoffs let alone a SB, which Goff has gone in two of the last three seasons.
2731244, If I’m a Rams fan I wouldn’t feel like that org has fucked me over
Posted by legsdiamond, Sun Jan-31-21 10:12 AM
they make the playoffs and actually win playoff games...

Not sure what they lose from thr roster this off season but the D is legit and Stafford is better than Goff. Doesn’t mean it will work out but I would feel like the org is in win now mode.

But I’m sure the ram fans who are draft nuts are furious.
2731248, I wouldn’t be shocked if the Rams don’t make the playoffs next
Posted by calij81, Sun Jan-31-21 10:39 AM
Season or again under McVay and their current GM. McVay is coaching on borrowed time and seems desperate.

You build through the draft, that’s what all successful teams do. It’s bit a boring and can be slow but that’s how you build a sustained and successful team.

2731235, You need to feel equally or even more sorry for Rams fans
Posted by calij81, Sun Jan-31-21 12:14 AM
Prior to the trade, the Rams were in the 4th worst cap situation in the NFL, already $27.7 million over the 2021 cap. They still need to eat $22.2 million in dead cap space for Goff's contract in 2021 (instead of the $34.6 million to keep him), plus any of Goff's bonuses. So this nets $12 million in cap space, but then you take on $20 million for Stafford's 2021 contract.

So now the Rams are even further over the salary cap, plus they traded two first round and a third round pick. The Rams are going to have to make some tough decisions to let go of players in 2021 since they won't be able to afford them any more salary cap-wise.

The Rams still have an awful offensive line and no deep threat receiver. Instead of improving in the draft or in free agency, they mortgaged their future with past trades (Fowler, Cooks, Watkins, Peters, Ramsey) and then doubled down and over leveraged the next decade by trading away more future picks for Stafford and making their salary cap situation worse. But sure, Goff was the problem, right?

Anyone who thinks Goff was holding the Rams back is in for a rude awakening. Just wish they'd have sent Goff into a better situation.

A bunch of nfl folks swear Stafford can be unlocked. I like the arm talent. I don’t love the not winning. I also don’t love that he hasn’t played in a real game in at least a few years.

I hope he cares. I hope he stays healthy. I hope the Rams give him some shit to work with. He clearly gets a coach upgrade from Patricia.

Goff got his ass dumped. If he has anything left, it’ll be fun to see it come out. Too bad I’m of the opinion that Detroit is gonna be a shit show.

I need to go look up the Marvin Jones contract situation. I think he deserves better than Detroit too.
2731226, The Rams have no picks in the draft so he won’t get a lot to work with
Posted by calij81, Sat Jan-30-21 11:00 PM
Look at all the Rams draft picks and lack of draft picks since 2017. The Rams have basically traded away their future for guys like Fowler, Watkins, Cooks and Peters who aren’t even with the team now and then doubled down by trading for Ramsey.

The Rams are playing on credit card debt and that debt is coming due so they took a high interest credit card (trading more picks) for Stafford in the hopes it buys them time with this roster.

Can't wait to see this in action.
2731215, Bad trade for both.
Posted by allStah, Sat Jan-30-21 10:26 PM
Stafford is injury prone, and will be on the shelf for
about 5 games out of the season. Good luck with that.

Goff can’t throw, and can’t read defenses.

The Rams have a good 2nd string QB. Would have been better off trading
for picks and then drafting a QB. This draft is loaded with talented QBs.

2731219, He's played all 16 games every season in Detroit, but two...
Posted by Dstl1, Sat Jan-30-21 10:43 PM
including all 16, this past season.
2731223, He is also 32 and he is more Jay Cutler than Brees/Rivers/Brady
Posted by calij81, Sat Jan-30-21 10:56 PM
In the sense he isn’t going to be an ageless wonder playing at a reasonably high level into his late 30s, let alone mid 30s.

Plus, that Rams OL is garbage so I wouldn’t be shocked to see Stafford injured this season.
2731225, Hey...you clearly don't like that trade...
Posted by Dstl1, Sat Jan-30-21 11:00 PM
that's all good. I have no stake in the Rams or how this turns out. I was just replying to him saying Stafford was injury prone. He's actually been pretty resilient.
2731227, He was until this season, which would worry me
Posted by calij81, Sat Jan-30-21 11:02 PM
2731228, He missed 8 games last year due to a serious back injury.
Posted by allStah, Sat Jan-30-21 11:05 PM
And this year, even though he played anyway, his body was focked up
which is why he played like crap.

Stafford suffered a right thumb injury against Washington on Nov. 15, a rib injury on Dec. 13 against Green Bay and a right ankle injury against Tampa Bay last weekend. Still, he's managed to start every game for the 5-10 Lions this season -- and will likely do so again against the Vikings (6-9).

He he is now an injury prone QB in my book as he is an older QB. He is a lot
like what Ben used to be, but not able to truly lead his team while carrying the injuries...

Not a good trade for either team.

2731230, I think this is a good trade for the Lions, they will probably still
Posted by calij81, Sat Jan-30-21 11:14 PM
mess it up and not get better but that’s because it is the Lions and they hired an idiot head coach.

Two first rounders and a third, plus a young QB is a decent haul for a 32 year QB who has never really won and it starting to have injury issues is a win.

The Lions new GM was previously with the Rams so he knows Goff and must have wanted him.
2731231, I don’t know, man.
Posted by allStah, Sat Jan-30-21 11:27 PM
Goff is guaranteed 45 million for the next 2 seasons. We all know he is trash as fock.

Trubisky is better than Goff. Tru can run and throw, just can’t read coverages for shit.

Goff can’t run. He can’t throw, and can’t read defenses. That’s why they ditched him. They just gave him that 134 million dollar contract.

Lions will have to draft a QB
2731232, Is that what the Lions owe him? Do the Rams pick some of that up?
Posted by calij81, Sat Jan-30-21 11:37 PM
I’m not sure how the salary cap works with this trade. Stafford was owed a lot of money as well so it isn’t like the Lions were dealing a young QB at the end of his rookie deal.

Goff is better than Trubisky. All the stats back that up, Goff at least took the team that drafted him and helped get them to a Super Bowl.

This is more about McVays ego and the Rams over paying players. The Rams did the same thing with Gurley, gave him a big contract and the soured on him and cut him a few years later.

Loins new GM was previously with the Rams so he knows what he is getting with Goff.
2731233, And Tru almost led the Bears to the SB.
Posted by allStah, Sat Jan-30-21 11:48 PM
But we just had a shit kicker. We agree to disagree on that.

Goff is trash to me.
2731234, Last comment about Mitch but that’s a big stretch for the word almost
Posted by calij81, Sun Jan-31-21 12:10 AM
They lost in the divisional round, they couldn’t even make to the NFC Championship game. Mitch has never won a single playoff game, which admittedly is a small sample size of just two.

Goff has 3 more playoff wins and SB performances than Mitch has playoff wins.

Blame it on the kicker but why were the Bears settling for FGs? Because Mitch couldn’t score TDs.

STOP

Mitch Trubisky is a below average QB who was being coached by a moron.

That team was not going to any Superbowl
2731238, Nah this is a GREAT move for the Lions.
Posted by soulfunk, Sun Jan-31-21 08:41 AM
Looking at the cap implications, the Lions have to take a hit on Goff for two years and can then cut him with no more hits. The picks can help to jump start a rebuild, and if they draft their future QB they don’t have to start him right away because of having Goff for a couple years. Stafford wanted to leave, so the whole league knew they needed to move him, and they weren’t going to win anything with him anyways. They take a cap hit in years that won’t matter anyways because of the rebuild, and get nice picks in return.

Not saying they will actually use these picks well, or be able to identify a franchise QB in the draft, and I REALLY don’t like their head coach pick. But I give the GM credit for getting the most out of this move.
2731217, wrong spot

2731222, The Rams are trying real hard to be a bad team
Posted by calij81, Sat Jan-30-21 10:54 PM
The last time the Rams picked in the 1st round was in 2016, when they selected Goff. With this trade, they will now go 7 years without a pick in the first round. The reason the Rams have regressed is mostly due to the lack of draft picks since 2016. They haven’t invested in young talent and cheap young talent.
2731242, Draft? We talking draft???
Posted by legsdiamond, Sun Jan-31-21 10:06 AM
Seriously, the Rams are trying it a different way. Instead of gambling on 1st riund picks they are trading for proven first rounders...

but they are paying a shit load of money and draft capital for them.

Stafford makes them better but I’m not sure if Stafford is that dude under playoff pressure.

YES. I like that the nfl is starting to have more teams say ‘fuck this’. Firing gms and coaches. Trading name brand players who were on the team tickets and commercials. All of that shit.

We get a great shot to debate it before the games are played. Then we get to see it. Last year we got to see the Texans fuck up their whole team, finally move off of BOB 2 years too late, and help Arizona. We got to see the Vikings help Buffalo AND themselves with the Diggs/Jefferson deal. We saw Nick Foles fail AGAIN. We got to see Brady succeed AGAIN. We saw Teddy with a starting gig again. We saw the end of Brees. We got clarity that Rivers was done. All sorts of stuff. Oh yeah, Jags tanked full strength and gave away Fournette who of fucking course went to Brady. The Jets fucked up a tank cuz of course they did.

even more than that, Howie Roseman BEEN needed to GTFO.

He might not go in the first round. His weight is a huge issue, which is why
he didn’t weigh in at the Senior Bowl. He barely weighs 170.

The current Mock draft has my Bears taking him, but I’m like no way in hell
will the Bears have two top receivers that weigh 170. Mooney weighs 170,
and was one of the best rookies in the league. However, he didn’t finish out
the season due to injury.

Coaches are hella gassed up on the concept of ‘if you don’t love your qb, move the fuck off of him’. And if they think they’re gonna be good post-trade, they don’t care as much about those first rounders.

And shit, seeing 6-10 head coaches get canned every year is not exactly a promising thing for the other head coaches to see. And some of these head dudes get fired and don’t make it back.

Unless of course 1 agrees to another 1 year deal and the other franchise tag just to play 1 more year with Brady.

But that's a huge risk to the $ they deserve though, give the risk of a severe injury (ACL, Achilles etc.) happening.

>..and to be honest, Suh's earned the spot if he wants it.

yeah, I guess. I'd rather Gerald McCoy come back, if I'm honest. Of course the same risk of injury with Watt applies to McCoy as well, so Suh returning would be preferred.

There wasn't much talk about it when urban was hired but im wondering what the board consensus is as to the level of success he's going to have. It seems like a peculiar move given that I don't think he'll be able to last more than 3 years. He seemed to have really settled into his role on Fox and was really great at it.

in addition to assed brain and out of touch decisions such as these, you have a guy who was on a very clear negative trajectory in terms of actual football coaching.

it's never talked about but the talent at osu was so far and above just about everyone else that it masked the on field coaching blunders and disorganization that were becoming all too commonplace. it was heading south in a hurry.

factor in the health stuff and I'm not on high on his chances here.

Truth is: Seahawks were supposed to be a dynasty. Now we’re years removed from the b2b SB appearances. And Wilson is aging but still dope. But he’s expensive now. So, depending on hubris, Seattle might think they can make another Hov via building a badass team around some new and cheap overachieving 3rd rounder.

I’m confident that they’d be wrong to move off of Wilson without getting a big load of shit for him. And even then, it could go hella wrong if he lands in the right place.

And maybe this is the off-season where team lose their damn minds and trade their qbs cuz they think they can just get a cheaper one who can do okay with weapons. IE Herbert replacing Rivers.
2732155, I think the QB pay is due for a market correction due to the lower cap
Posted by legsdiamond, Sat Feb-13-21 08:49 AM
all a sudden paying a QB a shit ton of money looks like a bad investment when the cap doesn’t go up as expected.

I also think the Mahomes deal has other teams a bit jealous.

Colts needed a QB, Eagles needed to move on.
Carson had his best season ever playing with Frank Reich coaching.

This needed to happen. I'm glad it did.

And I'm glad the Colts didn't panick and overpay for dude. The contract is big enough as is..especially if homeboy is mentally washed and/or still an unlucky SOB physically.

I'm most pleased that some dude doesn't get stuck at QB for some place that doesn't want him where he's gotten benched, coaches canned, and all of that. Hopefully the Colts give him stuff to work with, he stays healthy, and we get to see if he sucks or not.

Maybe if Russ does get traded out of Seattle, Jimmy G continues to be injury prone and average, Rams take a step back because of lack of draft pieces, maybe Arizona does surprise and win the NFC west and makes a run.

2733332, Bucs inform Godwin he's being franchise tagged, per report (swipe)
Posted by Marbles, Tue Mar-09-21 11:55 AM

This is great news. Now if we can hold on to our cats on defense (especially Shaq Barrett & Lavonte David), I'll feel better going into next season to defend the title.

***

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/buccaneers-inform-chris-godwin-he-is-being-franchise-tagged-per-report/

As the Buccaneers gear up for a Super Bowl title defense in 2021, they are ensuring that one of Tom Brady's go-to weapons remains aboard the pirate ship. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Tampa Bay has informed receiver Chirs Godwin that he is being franchise tagged. The 25-year-old pass-catcher was set to be one of the more talented wide receivers on the open market, but the Buccaneers have elected to deploy the tag and retain him for at least one more season.

In 12 games played over the course of the regular season, Godwin hauled in 65 of his 84 targets for 840 yards and seven touchdowns. During Tampa Bay's run to a Super Bowl LV championship, he added 232 yards and a touchdown, while notching the first title of his young career. Godwin has been with the Buccaneers since the club drafted him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Penn State. He exploded with a career-year in 2019 where he earned second-team All-Pro honors along with his first Pro Bowl nod.

While Godwin is now locked in for the Bucs, it will be curious to see how this move impacts the defensive side of the ball with Shaq Barrett and Lavonte David scheduled to be free agents.

Gurley is still a crippled enigma. I'd want absolutely no part of whatever that is.

And the go part of Bell's stop and go game is obviously not what it once was unless he's done something great with this body since the last season. And he's a little loose with them tweets for his current status in the league.

He landed in a bad spot in HOU. Oline was putrid, team was a mess, BOB was finna get fired fo sho, all of that stuff.

On top of that, he couldn't stay healthy or beat out RBs who were not exactly at their best. Maybe the money was okay but his HOU run was a bad bad look for his career overall methinks.

A professional sports team is about as close a thing as I can imagine to "it takes a village" in adult professional life other than service industry shit. The restaurant I work at was driving each other to vaccines, writing each others' times on a whiteboard and picking up each others' shifts in case 2nd/J&J doses went south...and now we're all vaxxed, all good and having a great time at work.
