2729081, 2021 NFL Coach and GM Carousel Post Posted by Dstl1, Sun Jan-03-21 07:30 PM
Ugh..y’all know what it is (c)
Known openings Houston Detroit Atlanta (wonder if Raheem will get any play)
Early reporting is Gase is gone. Also, being reported that Doug Marrone is looking donezo in JAX and that they will be interested in Urban Meyer and Ryan Day.
Chargers...I mean, Lynn is gone, right?
Kellen Moore turned down the Boise HC job to resign with Dallas as the OC...okay.
|
2729089, Chargers looked good and played better down the stretch Posted by calij81, Sun Jan-03-21 07:43 PM
I’m not sure that’s enough to save Lynn but I would be okay with Lynn coming back if he gets rid of his DC Bradley and finds a good special teams coach.

He might get stuck as the fall guy. I just hope he gets another gig this decade. And not some broke down Detroit Lions after Stafford shit either.

2729098, Are we sure he would take Goldilocks over Fields? Posted by calij81, Sun Jan-03-21 08:35 PM
I know he didn’t coach him at OSU but I think Urban might prefer Fields.

not that I have a great reasoning behind it, but

I swear, he probably took 5 full years off of Patrick Ramsey's life.
|
2729989, you think he can manage NFL personnel and roster-building? Posted by will_5198, Fri Jan-15-21 06:50 PM
the fact he was hired before the GM seems to mean he has the most power over player acquisition. which I don't think will be good for him.

2729129, I actually hope the Chargers keep Lynn but he fired DC Gus Bradley Posted by calij81, Mon Jan-04-21 12:46 AM
and brings in a very good special teams coordinator.
If they do fire Lynn I hope they go after Eric Bieniemy and I hope Bienemy keeps Pep Hamilton on the staff as either the QB coach or promotes him to OC. Bienemywould be a home run hire since he grew up in the LA area and was drafted and played for the Chargers.
Outside of Bienemy, maybe they go after the Rams or Niners DC.

to be fired after 1 bad season your seat is already warm, that's generally black coach status
|
2729175, RE: a seat usually gets warm before it gets hot, if you have chance... Posted by allStah, Mon Jan-04-21 12:09 PM
Dude. Philly has went to the PO like 3 of the past 4 years, plus a Super Bowl.
Dude Lovie Smith was a coach from 2004-2012....look how long Marvin Lewis was a coach. Those dudes got a longer stay than most white coaches.
I think there is more of a racist issue with coaches being hired than with being fired.

How many losing vs winning seasons did they have?

2729162, I think he's in the spot John Harbaugh was in pre-Lamar Posted by Tiger Woods, Mon Jan-04-21 11:10 AM
Harbaugh had the equity built up, a Super Bowl, and was popular with his players. I think that's Pederson too.

Looks like they somehow managed to handle the situation in a way that angered Watson. So hooray..keep on keeping on Texans. Such a bad crew in charge there. Watson is the one guy they should be on the same page with for starters and nope...can't do it. Have to make sure they show him who is in charge I guess.

2729352, I'm resigned to the fact that the Niners are going to lose Saleh Posted by mrhood75, Thu Jan-07-21 02:35 PM
And that he's probably going to take at least a few of his assistants with him.
Seems to be the belief that he's going to go to Detroit. If he's going to bounce, I'd at least like it to be for a better job. But I guess all the teams with opening with the most upside are looking for offense-oriented "next McVeigh/Shannahan" types.

I hate the racial language on this. I hate that the implication is that Watson is mad that they didn't get at Eric B for an interview BECAUSE HE IS BLACK.
And of course, the red folks, straight off sadness from the bullshit at the capitol and continued crying about a red team losing another popular vote and presidential election, are gonna swing in on ropes and holler out 'liberal media spin job'. And really, the way this shit is written makes it easy for them to say so.
How about this: Watson came into the league in the same draft with Trubisky, Mahomes, and Lamar. It isn't wild to say that they have all had better coaching talent and organizational stability around them. The dude wants stability and a good azz coach on offense to unlock him. And if a guy related to the most dangerous offense in the league AND maybe the best coaching tree in recent memory is interviewing for jobs around the league, he wants to see that dude in the building for a talk. Not just cuz he's a BLACK DUDE, right?
So look: if Watson directly asked for Eric B and the team brought in Rooney Rule folks just to cover the 'interview a black dude' bases, then YES, Watson has a right to be pissed. Cuz he didn't ask them to just interview any colored fella, he asked specifically for Eric B and they didn't get it done or let him know the deal on it. Cuz hey, even if the deal was Eric B isn't interested, then fuck it...that's the deal! How hard is it to say that to Watson?
|
2729539, Fam, at this point I don’t even care if he asked for him specifically... Posted by Dstl1, Sun Jan-10-21 05:42 PM
because he was black. Fuck it. I hope he went in there with one of these on... https://images.app.goo.gl/Y46j6LsjEKDbiCYh6 ...with an XClan medallion around his neck and some Jodeci boots, untied...and yelled “get Eric Bienemy, or else”. Dude has been a great citizen, a competitor and helluva teammate. Never complained when BOB put his body on the line game after game, with no qb protection. Played every game like it was the most important game of his career. Dude fucking led the league in passing yards, this season!! Fuck the Texans. I’d love to see him rocking with Brian Flores. JJ Watt apologized to him for wasting a year of his career...he sees it.

2729641, I have no idea if he's a good coach or not. Really no clue Posted by Tiger Woods, Mon Jan-11-21 02:40 PM
on one hand, they overachieved post Super Bowl in my opinion. Not a lot of talent there and he still willed them to the playoffs.
On the other hand, Frank Reich is obviously a good coach and there's clearly a with-Reich Eagles and post-Reich Eagles.
Seems Wentz is a hoe. I just saw this with Haskins - when there's basically no one defending someone either on the team or in the press, the guy in question is probably an asshole. But in this case I guess the asshole won out. Fine by me. Chase Young may end this guy's life if he doesn't figure out how to navigate a collapsing pocket again.

very very very true. his whole positions and moves been bitchmade.

also true. if they keep wentz, trade hurts somewhere where he can go play and win. so i can watch that team. (except the texans).

The chargers should show their ass and holler at Saban if they don’t dig Eric B. Young, good, and cheap qb should interest folks and they may as well fucking go for it. They haven’t seen a sb since Natron Means (sp). But most folks seem to feel like their roster has talent and Lynn seemed to have dudes trying so at least the group isn’t all bitches who are accustomed to acting a fool without being checked.
I assume no one is dying to take that Lions gig cuz who wants to deal with a happy Rodgers 2x a year for half a decade?
And what can Philly tell any established coach after the shit they just pulled with Doug and with an expensive qb who has been hated on as a bad locker room guy AND has laid down some wildly shaky tape?
The Texans are fuckups and can’t wait to hire someone that’s gonna annoy all reasonable earthlings. Hopefully they prove me wrong.

I won’t say Arthur wasn’t a good OC but I didn’t see any improvement from last year to this year in several regards that we needed - quicker developing passing plays - more straight drops for Tannehill - ability to switch up when Henry wasn’t going
AJ and Henry are just that good that they were able to outperform this stuff but it all came back to bite us just like I said it would all year

2730208, The lack of a black hire makes me think these orgs... Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Mon Jan-18-21 04:19 PM
The lack of a black hire makes me think these orgs don't even know good PR much less have a real commitment to stand by their pro-BLM statements before the season.
The model sports used to integrate players doesn't seem to work within the power structures of these organizations.
The rosters are more integrated because the coaches realized that Black players' performance in smaller leagues outperformed their white counterparts. The coaches couldn't win without Black players so they went with the tide to preserve their jobs. Cultural acceptance was secondary to winning.
With management or coaching, the differences between a good candidate are generally slight. (Gase and Bienemy excepted) There's no combine that measures with a chart how well a coach can manage the ego of a player or 'manage up.'
So, given that a black coach isn't going to be (or have the chance to prove) the clear best choice, the tie (like in virtually every aspect of business) goes to the white candidate.
Diversity would be that if a white candidate and a POC candidate are up for the job, the POC coach is awarded the job a proportional amount. The NFL is not doing that, to be understated. It, like almost all aspects of society, needs to do better accepting candidates of differing background AND giving them the influence and power to set their own culture - with players and management.
No, I'm not really surprised or shocked. Just disappointed in the same, unfortunately, familiar way.

2730426, Didn't realize their new GM was Black Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Thu Jan-21-21 09:47 PM
Not that if teams were hiring white coaches and execs who were uber-experienced and talented the discrimination wouldn't be present. But half of these guys are walking in off the street with little experience and (to me) have shown very little and getting jobs because they 'interview well.'
I don't normally get worked up about hiring practices. But given the outrage (now seemingly performative) about injustice towards Black and other POC showed by some teams in the summer of last year, these governors have doubled down on their laisse-fair actions with regard to race and hiring management and it makes me somewhat angry.
I'm not shocked or learning anything especially new this hiring cycle, but it does cement in my mind how little these execs and governors care about social progress.

|
2731084, alright, what will the Deshaun Watson price be? Posted by Tiger Woods, Thu Jan-28-21 01:16 PM
a legitimate franchise QB in his prime, a proven winner, and a wildly popular teammate at both Clemson and in Houston. The word "unprecedented" has been over abused in the last year but this is surely an appropriate example of the word.
I think it'd be crazy to do, but I could see Watson garnering as many as four firsts. If you're the Colts, and this is your ONLY glaring weakness...shit, why not?
Realistically I think the package looks like
3 1s 2 2s 2 3s
or
3 1s 2 2s 1 lesser QB included
picks are both overvalued and golden currency, depending on what team holds them. The Jets could trade all of their draft this year for Watson and I'm still not convinced they'd make the playoffs. But, again, if you're Indy or you're the Niners...adding Watson kind of punches your ticket to the conference title game, no? (God I can't imagine what Deshaun would do in a Kyle Shanahan system).
You use picks to hopefully get into a position to compete and ultimately win a conference championship. Well, there's a lot of teams who need a QB, but there's a small handful of teams who are quite literally a good QB away from winning a Super Bowl. Extremely curious and excited to see how this shakes out.
|
2731090, If I'm the Niners, I give them however many picks it would take... Posted by mrhood75, Thu Jan-28-21 02:50 PM
...to get it done. Plus Jimmy G if they wanted him.
I remember almost a decade ago, when Peyton was on the move, there was talk that Niners should sign him. And I was against that, because I knew it would hurt our ability to keep the rest of the team together.
This... isn't that. You 100% make a move for 25-year old franchise QB in his prime. You actually have a receiving core who play well even with someone like Mullens throwing to them. Kittles is coming back. You've got Mostert and Wilson as your RBs. With Watson you'd have the best QB in the division and potentially the best in the NFC. You do whatever it takes to get him.

This league is so fun when the right thing happens in these situations. AKA I hope this doesn't end with Stafford in Houston and Watson in Detroit or something shitty like that. Give me Stafford in Indy and Watson with the Niners. Give me Luck showing up out of nowhere to unretire and play for...shit, I dunno, the Saints or the Pats or some shit. Let's have some damn fun!
Oh, and fuck Philly..let them keep Wentz and see how it goes.

2731130, i expect him to be a Texan this season and many more Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Jan-29-21 01:52 PM
NFL just aint equipped to pull a Harden/AD/PG move successfully
the way the texans roll i can see them ruining his career just to prove a point for themselves and the league.

2731132, I think two things: Posted by Dstl1, Fri Jan-29-21 02:05 PM
1. Texans are bluffing, so teams don't feel like they have to give him away. 2. Deshaun is fully prepared to sit/retire/make this shit ugly. Just my humble opinion. We'll see.

The best way to trade someone for the max amount is to act like you don’t want to trade them.
Hopefully they know they can’t just do a ‘hey, fuck you buddy...you’re playing FOR US’. Dudes just saw Luck retire ‘out of nowhere’.
