2727534, Cleveland Baseball Team?

2727545, for one year it should be 'Cleveland Baseball Team'
Posted by Dr Claw, Sun Dec-13-20 11:49 PM
it probably won't but... lowkey? Washington Football Team is actually sticking, and the uniforms look proper.
2727548, i think the WFT is going to stick. The Unis too with the numbers

It’s classic. Plus they do that in soccer. They don’t have official nicknames, just club names like Manchester City Football Team.

2743719, Guardians?

2743722, Does that have any specific city or region connection?

Something to do with the Coast Guard?

I don't know much about Cleveland.
2743729, it's a reference to The Guardians of Traffic

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hope_Memorial_Bridge

One of the main bridges that goes over the Cuyahoga River (that divides East and West sides of the city).

Obscure (to most people) which is one reason I like the name choice
2743738, Ah. Thanks. Hoping you would explain it.

2743721, Dumb choice

should have went back to the Spiders
2743725, I actually really like the new name.
Posted by Dr Claw, Fri Jul-23-21 10:02 AM
No contrived animal names (wouldn't have liked the Spiders revival, because the only Spider I like is Spider-Man).

No contrived links to the Rock Hall.
Same colors, same uniform, and they basically just changed half of the actual name, so the name logo looks similar too.

The Cavs had "Defend The Land" going on for a bit, this fits in with that.

Wahoo is gone, at long last.

2743726, I don't see Chicago changing the Blackhawks.

I always wondered why they didn't get the same scrutiny as Cleveland and Washington.

Pretty easy to see. The logo is classier than Chief Wahoo and the name isn’t a slur like Washington’s. I see it changing in like 10 years, but I always knew these would be the first 2 dominoes to fall.
2743733, yup

I mean relatively speaking, obviously. Wahoo is much more of a caricature.
2743775, i agree FWIW

the blackhawks logo carries a touch of pride and distinction. almost elegance even.

a smiling red pac man with a feather can GTFOH
2743838, Idk man , I’m of the belief that people should not be used as mascots
Posted by guru0509, Mon Jul-26-21 09:49 AM
Or logos based on their ethnic background .

But I’m not white either so I view it differently

2743842, this particular case is more of a name and likeness thing than ethnicity

Black Hawk was a real person, not a tribe, and a ton of stuff in Illinois and Iowa is named after him (schools, bridges, etc). the Iowa Hawkeyes got their name from the same dude, even tho their logo is a bird.

if the logo is meant to be dignified portrature of one particular guy, as opposed to a generalization of a group of people, it just strikes me as different. and tbh ive never heard people raise the issue the way it was raised for Indians/Redskins/Braves/etc
2743728, I don't love the name but what is worst is the execution

the C and Cleveland typeface is great. Everything else is terrible. Wish they did one of the faces from the statues as the mascot/main logo. Go old school and put a baseball bat in his hand so that it has that old vintage feel. The G with the baseball is so bad. Theres no real cohesiveness, and it looks like an minor league team
2743734, Totally agree. It is even crazier how bad the logo is when they already...

had a local design shop that did it a year ago.

They could have reached out to them.
2743755, I agreed with your take

But then I read more about the cultural significance of the 'quirks' of the script and letter 'C'. (https://news.sportslogos.net/2021/07/23/stand-guard-cleveland-guardians-announced-as-new-name-for-indians/baseball/) After reading the page, the elements and the choices make a lot more sense.

That being said, the explanation of the logo with the baseball is a deep yoga stretch to me.

But all in all, I think this is a branding that is reflective of the city of Cleveland which was the way to go. It's a way to tie the team into the fabric of the city. Creating some intentional nods to the culture of the city had to be a priority. Reestablishing connection to the culture of the city makes the change more of a transition into something familiar rather than starting a history from ground zero.
2743761, The logo is a cross btwn Madden create-a-team and '40s fascist icons
Posted by Nodima, Sat Jul-24-21 09:16 AM
It's pretty bad IMO

Even forgiving the ties to local architecture, it just doesn't look Greek/Deco to me, it looks like the kind of logo you could comfortably slap onto an F-250 next to some gun propaganda

But it's a start, I guess
