2722747, 2020 NBA Finals: Miami Heat vs Los Angeles Lakers (continued)
Posted by CyrenYoung, Thu Oct-08-20 04:52 PM
..LA's up 3-1, looking to close out game 5 in the Mamba Jersey.

I'm pretty sure that counts as bulletin board material, so it won't be a surprise to see Miami bring the heat (corny pun intended lol).

1. More. Win.

*skatin' the rings of saturn*

..and miles to go before i sleep...
2722748, Happy for the Lakers and I hope the Heat get another game, but
Posted by Vector, Thu Oct-08-20 04:58 PM
it's not the same without the fans.

I'm not saying it's a * win but it's not the same for me and the finals made that clear.
2722755, No need to explain. You’re telling the truth.
Posted by allStah, Thu Oct-08-20 06:17 PM
A lot of people feel that way.
2722759, unlike you, who just bullshits all day

2722774, Just real quick: What’s Vector look like? How old is he?
Posted by Ryan M, Fri Oct-09-20 12:07 AM
I ask cause you apparently know these things.

Don’t worry, I’ll wait. (C) Katt
2722853, Yes. I know what Vector looks like.
Posted by allStah, Fri Oct-09-20 03:48 PM
A Vector is a straight line or line segment. It has both magnitude and direction.
A Vector has no age. It is a mathematical property.
2722857, lmao
Posted by Vector, Fri Oct-09-20 04:30 PM
2722786, I haven’t been sleeping well since Game 2.
Posted by Ryan M, Fri Oct-09-20 09:05 AM
I want this to end tonight.

Let’s go.
2722808, I was watching ESPN all day yesterday, it was disrespectful how they...
Posted by ThaTruth, Fri Oct-09-20 10:35 AM
were discussing a Laker win tonight as if it was a foregone conclusion. I'm sure Riles has been pumping that shit in their practices and probably into their rooms the last 2 days. Those dudes have heart.

I'm sure we can handle business tonight but it will not be a cakewalk, these dudes will not lay down.
2722820, 100% agreed.
Posted by Ryan M, Fri Oct-09-20 12:19 PM
Like the Heat were written off after Game 1.

Game 2 they were better.

Game 3, they beasted.

Game 4 was closer than it probably should have been...and now we're thinking they're just going to lay down?

I believe in this team and I do think the cerebral nature of Bron/AD/Rondo will pick them apart tonight but it's faaaaaaar from a done deal.
2722958, ****clangs bottles outside your window****
Posted by Castro, Fri Oct-09-20 10:44 PM
Whew did y'all sound cocky a week ago.

BOTH TEAMS PLAYED HARD!!!!

G'NITE. ***POOF***
2722804, Don't wanna bam it up but Bron surpasses MJ tonight.
Posted by CIPHA, Fri Oct-09-20 10:27 AM
Full stop.
2722805, they're already starting to "bam up" the post lol

2722881, Missed that. My bad.
Posted by RandomFact, Fri Oct-09-20 08:03 PM
2722816, If he wins this year, Bron's case just got significantly more compelling
Posted by Vex_id, Fri Oct-09-20 11:59 AM
He'll have set a new benchmark/standard for individual achievement, rewriting record after record with anomalous performance year-after-year. To do it with three different franchises (particularly when he's taking bottom-barrel lottery teams and turning them into champions) would yet another unprecedented feat.

Never before has a singular player essentially been a traveling dynasty on his own merits, competing in NBA Finals for a decade straight, regardless of what team he's on - and winning 4 in total (with one title at the beginning of the decade and capping one off at the very end of the decade).

To do this in the modern era is bananas - it'll never be done again.
2722832, Nothing is compelling
Posted by allStah, Fri Oct-09-20 01:24 PM
Only that he has successfully quit one team, and gathered another mvp caliber player , to win a championship with another team 3 times.

So out of 10 appearances that’s 4 rings, for 40 percent, which is a losing percentage. And while jumping from team to team , all of his peers won a championship against him.

Dirk, Duncan, Kawhi, Curry, KD. They all beat him on a championship level.

Mike beat Magic
Mike beat Malone and Stockton
Mike beat Kemp and Payton
Mike beat Clyde Drexler
Mike beat Barkley.

He still and will forever be chasing that ghost in Chicago.

So do continue to ride in the back of his tour bus with your pom poms and majorette baton.....male groupie
2722836, oh no doubt - I still can't believe they traded Ingram!
Posted by Vex_id, Fri Oct-09-20 01:40 PM
Lakers gave away their future and are slow AF. Teams will be running circles around them.

-->
2722838, ^^^^And when they ain’t on the pole
Posted by allStah, Fri Oct-09-20 02:16 PM
they on back of the tour bus.
2722924, I stay out of posts like these but stop disrespecting Pippen
Posted by Ray_Snill, Fri Oct-09-20 09:54 PM
quit acting like MJ didn't have one of the best all around players in history with him and for the last 3-peat had arguably 2 of the best defenders in NBA history.

ok carry on ...

2722983, Disrespecting pippen? He is my favorite player of all time!
Posted by allStah, Fri Oct-09-20 11:27 PM
And Pippen was drafted!

Jordan didn’t go to team to team recruiting Mofos. Picking dudes or joining dudes from other teams. Jordan and the GM didn’t get along ...He had to play with whatever management brought in.

Know what’s going on before you take a shot.
2722841, I'm in this line

2722810, enjoy tonight yall. it'll be our final game with this team.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Oct-09-20 10:40 AM
weirdly enough i think i like this team more than any of the 5 kobe titles which is something i never imagined at the start of the season.

i always knew & felt we'd win this year. but i didn't expect to enjoy watching these guys so much considering many of them were the opps at one point (bron, dwight, rondo), guys i just didnt really know beyond their court work (AD, Morris), or they just played so unreliably night to night in previous years (kcp, javale, kuzma).

what a story. we close the book tonight.
2722815, Wild stat regarding the Lakers, the NBA Championship and the election
Posted by Oak27, Fri Oct-09-20 11:43 AM
The Lakers are the only western conference franchise to win an NBA Championship in a US Presidential Election year, and every time the Lakers won in an election year the Republican candidate won the presidency.

Go Heat?
2722822, DTS - where did you get this twisted fake news bs from? Fox news?

The debate was going to be compelling?

I’ve seen jimmy play his whole Fucking career and he never did this to anyone or

imagine if MJ was allowed to drive to the basket the way these dudes are today? Dwight took a hard swipe, not a hit, a swipe at Jimmy and people were talking about he should be ejected. It’s just a different game in a different time.
2722987, Young MJ would get to the rack every possesion if he wanted to
Posted by DJR, Sat Oct-10-20 12:15 AM
Those across era comparisons are just so tough though.

I have no doubt Magic would be hitting 2+ 3’s a game now on a good percentage. He was 90% from the line and starting to shoot and make 3’s when his career got cut short.

Hell, Hakeem would probably be hitting 3s now, and switching onto and locking guards on the pick and roll.

If Shaq played in the 60s, he probably would’ve averaged 50 and 25. Maybe 60 and 30??!
It’s just really hard to compare the GOAT of one era to the GOAT of another. The game changes too much.
2722999, The athletes are also way way way better now, though.

They literally changed the rules in 2004 so guys like that could be on the floor because the NBA was becoming too dominated by black athletes. So they changed the rules and gave Nash those two bogus MVP’s.

2723003, people were saying when Bron wins tonight he’s the GOAT...
Posted by ThaTruth, Sat Oct-10-20 07:52 AM
>Bron balled.

He did, so did Jimmy.

Last night I was watching Jimmy do all these weak ass drives and thinking why doesn’t Vogel have Morris hammer him one time but you can’t do that in today’s nba. Bron plays through some contact but not like he would have in the 90’s/early 2000’s. Then you got AD big bitch ass out hanging around the 3pt line.

You paid a price for going to the basket back then there were no easy layups.

And like I understand it’s a different every but people need to keep that in mind when they start making comparisons and looking at some the records that are being broken.

I bet MJ is sitting home laughing at these games like he laughed when they asked him if Gary Payton could defend him in ‘96.

One of the main reasons MJ’s go to shot because the turnaround jump was because you couldn’t get to the basket like that with being hammered. The Pistons taught him that, Jordan Rules.
2723005, The leader of the Bad Boys says Bron the GOAT

2722989, Heat in 7: a scenario (A REFRESHER FOR Y'ALL)
Posted by Castro, Sat Oct-10-20 01:54 AM
Jae Crowder guards Bron. His only instructions..."try and keep him under 40".

Vogel has shown he can make good adjustments between games, but he is going against Spo, who not only preps his teams well, but will tinker with things when he needs to in game. The Heat are a lot like Houston but their 'rim runner' is a 6' 10" point center, and they have shooters that are not going to shoot you out the game because the coach doesn't just throw his cards on the table and say beat me....he has pieces that he will move in and out of the lineup based on performance. So in that respect, the Heat pose some significant problems for the Lakers. The primary problem for the Heat will be scoring at the rim against the Lakers is going to be hard AF because you have four huge shot blockers. They are going to have to live with mid range shots and threes most of the time....the layup lines they ran against the C's are gone.

The Heat are going to do two things- they are going to press on offense similar to Houston, and they are going to be physical, as Spo is a disciple of Pat Riley. Bron of course, is immune to the physicality, but its going to affect everyone else on the Lakers. This allowed the Heat to beat the Celtics because they were then able to control the boards. Vogel can counter this by starting Dwight, but then how is Dwight going to respond the physical nature of the game. Can he keep his head and stay out of foul trouble? For the sake of this argument, I say no. JaVale has been pushed to the second team, and I don't think Vogel would immediately swap him out...so Dwight will have to be smart. Spo has Olynyk and Meyers Leonard to march out against him to further push him out of his game.

BAM vs. AD- this is the most compelling match up of the series. We have two mobile, skilled big men that can get their own shots and defend. AD of course, is a scorer deluxe- a seven footer that can attack off the dribble and can shoot over everyone....except now he's matched up with a guy who can beat him to spots and interrupt his rhythm. So what does he do? Will he then post Bam and shoot over him (and get fouled repeatedly by various heat players)...Then on defense,
AD can certainly shut down Bam the scoring machine. All those overpowering drives that Bam got on Theis are a thing of the past...so Bam in this series is more the facilitator. In that role, I think Spo is going to try and have Bam pull AD away from the basket. That leaves Bron having to be the rim protector against a team of finishers. Dragic, Herro, Butler and Bam....all great finishers. Vogel has to solve that...

Butler - he will show his whole game this series. The HEAT are not really a Super team, so odds are, this might be dudes only shot, and I think he has some perspective around this as he has played in multiple cities, so he's going to leave it all on the floor.

The Zone - Spo will use it judiciously to stop Laker momentum, and I think if it is used sparingly, it will be effective and can determine the outcome of a couple of games.

HEALTH- this is the final variable. These men have balled out for three months in a compressed schedule that while they haven't had to deal with jet lag and such, they have been in isolation, under pressure to stay isolated to keep from getting sick, playing under a microscope that freed them up in certain ways on the court but comes down to these next two weeks. The Heat are YOUNG, and I think this helps them....battle tested but young. The Lakers are a veteran squad and their most important pieces have a lot of games and minutes under their belt (Bron over 1500 games!). Bron I think is the best conditioned of the bunch and really at this point beyond any superlatives we can heap upon him...but he runs ball with a bunch of mortals. Extraordinary...but mortal. Can they stay healthy and focused and respond to the challenge from this young, nothing to lose bunch of mercenaries? I say that is going to be hard for them at this point, and the Heat, they are too young to know any better than what Pat Riley and Spo have drilled into their heads about the mystique of South Beach.

I think we get a classic series, with the Heat improbably winning in 7.
2722990, all respect due if you pull this off.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ke5eSys09g

Now my shit looks all prophetic but it was plain as day for me.

Spo made the adjustment on AD.....Butler? All world.

Danny Green? Still trash.

KCP has shown his value though- he has stepped the fuck up.

But AD limping. If AD is limping next game, we are tied.

Now everyone is saying the Lakers are trash except for Bron and AD. Bullshit. This team can ball when they are clicking. But is Vogel man enough to play Dion Waiters? Dion Waiters plays some real minutes, Lakers close it out. They need that don't give a fuck, shutdown corner mentality from someone besides Bron.

And we know the HEAT as a squad, has this. So here we are.

I’ve doomscrolled enough. That hurt, but we’ve still got 2 damn chances to close this team out. Green should have hit the shot and Kieff shouldn’t have pulled a JR but there were just so many other boneheaded plays. AD gets a day to rest, and while I don’t think we get another Bron game like that, I also don’t think we get another Jimmy game like that either.

Lakers fans in particular wanna kill these players when things don’t go their way. Green didn’t hit the shot. It hurts but oh well. Still up 3-2 in the damn finals with 2 chances to close it out. When the Lakers were down 3-2 against Boston in 2010, we had to win 2 games at Staples for a title and we all said if they don’t do it they never deserved the title. Same applies here. Miami is amazing...let em beat you 3 in a row and you never deserved it to begin with.

He deserves jokes and getting cooked. No one deserves death threats over a missed jumpshot. There was a time where this wasn’t a rebel yell or a hot take. Or at least no one would argue for the death threats. Maybe there’s always been idiots around us but they didn’t have a means to announce themselves to so many of us at once? Loser mfers.

As for me, I cussed like crazy when I saw Green go into the game for the possession. From watching the bubble, I have developed a disdain for dude. Stats be damned, he’s currently a catch and shoot shooter who can’t seem to shoot. And I was sick of looking at him miss wide open shots badly. So when it was clear that he was gonna get the Paxon 93 shot gifted to him, I stood up to see the result. The pass wasn’t perfect but still! Would he finally make one? Would this be how the Heat get laid to rest after a ridiculous effort to survive? I guess the fuck not! The rest of the foolishness didn’t even matter to me after that miss. Well, Green spotting up and wanting another shot right after that pissed me off even worse.

Then my wife got the gift of me telestrating how open Danny Green was. He wasn’t nba open. He wasn’t LA Fitness pickup game with typical lazy layman defense open. He was shooting in the driveway by yourself with no wind or major distractions open. Yeah yeah, Iggy but c’mon. I was besides myself cuz I hate seeing a guy miss his moment like that. Hopefully he bounces back and gets a chance to make a few buckets at least.
2723068, That Finals pressure hits different, and I know people will run to say...

he was in the Finals with Toronto last year but he was basically benched for FVV for the same reasons. It’s weird shooters don’t usually fall off like that but maybe he has something else going on.

As for the jokes people went way harder on JR in 2018 although he’s probably built a lil different than DG.

Dion Waiters is getting a ring, regardless of who wins the NBA Finals
This is the dream.

By James Dator

It’s impossible to guarantee any player a ring. Finals series’ are brutal. Games can be unexpected. Even the safest pick can sometimes surprise you. Simply put: You can never know for sure who is going to win. Unless it’s Dion Waiters in 2020.

Waiters will be getting an NBA Championship ring, regardless of who actually wins the series. Circumstance has brought him to this moment, and it’s the best scenario for a player. Waiters signed a contract with the Lakers on March 6 and has been with the team in the bubble. He started the season with (you guessed it) the Miami Heat.

So, in the eyes of the league he was a part of both the Heat and Lakers this season, thereby guaranteeing him a ring no matter what. There’s also a chance he could get double-paid as well. Every NBA player who is a part of the playoffs earns a portion of a stipend pool set aside as a reward for making the postseason. Part of this money is set aside for ancillary team staff, and players who are no longer with the team. The idea being that integral people to a team’s success could still be rewarded, even if business shipped them somewhere else.

Now, it’s uncertain Heat players will vote to give Waiters part of this pool — but there is a possibility. I choose to believe they will, just because it’s so much better that way. The idea that Waiters could earn a ring no matter what, and get paid by both teams in the NBA Finals is the kind of dream we should all get behind.

Sure, as a kid you might have imagined hitting the winning shot in Game 7 to bring your team a title, but for my money there is nothing better than putting yourself in a position to win a ring no matter what, and get paid by both teams. Winning by default is the true sign of greatness. If I was an NBA player I’d try to find a way to play for every team, at least once in my career, just to hedge my bets and get a ring.

In fact, this is my open plea to the National Basketball Association: I would like a 2021 NBA Championship ring. I don’t think this is asking for much. Here’s my proposal:

Each team signs me to a 1 day, $1 contract. We can get this all over with during training camp.
Just cut me for conduct detrimental to the team or some other excuse. Signing a writer to a contract is detrimental to the team in its own right, so you have a built in excuse.
After I receive my NBA championship ring from whichever team wins the title next year, I’ll make a $1,000 donation to a charity of the winning team’s choice.
Everyone wins! Especially me.

at the start of this i said i couldnt imagine what a team would have to do to beat those 2 4/7 times.

its just too overpowering. too much all court coverage on both ends

and now we know what works with these 2 and we'll be better next year after we recruit based on that intel

lets get it.

..Bron, AD, Rondo, & co. got it done with an intense emphasis on the same formula that they started with: defense.

Forcing turnovers, blocks, rebounding on both ends of the court. That's the type of actively you need to close out a dangerously talented young opponent in the Miami Heat.

106-93, and the score doesn't tell the real story. At one point, it got ugly. (GUILE © Dr claw)

Bron did exactly what I said he would: He led the team in damn-near every category. He attacked @ both ends of the court, keeping pressure on Miami. Anchored by a collective effort in the paint, the bench stepped up and showed out. Rondo continued pacing the game like a savvy vet. Davis showing off the full arsenal. KCP & Caruso playing with confidence.

Bron notches another Finals MVP with an impressive triple double performance (28/14/10).

Mamba, they made it. Respect due.

17.

2723191, Shout out to Lakers fans (the ones born and raised in LA).
Posted by RandomFact, Sun Oct-11-20 09:23 PM
One of the first things I realized when I moved to LA seven years ago was how knowledgable and die hard Lakers fans are. Don't let the shots of celebs at Staples fool you, Lakers fans (the ones from LA) are great fucking fans. They deserve this. The city deserves it too. In contrast to say, Miami circa 2010, LA is an elite elite elite sports city. More people than not truly give a shit here. And they support/follow through the good and the bad.

Shout out to LeBron, AD and the supporting cast as well. Also shout out to the Lakers org. Buss and Pelinka seem like good people. Can't say the same for most front offices. All the props are deserved across the board.

And most importantly, RIP Kobe.

Rondo and Dwight were on teams that got Bron out of the playoffs

LeBron's Team sent Vogel's 90's R&B Pacers home

Danny Green's team got booted out of the Finals by LeBron's Team, then Danny's Team sent him back to Cleveland

While in Cleveland, LeBron got Dion outta there, to make room for JR.

This year: Rondo, Dwight, Vogel, Danny, Dion, and JR all have one more ring than they had before. Thanks to King "KLANG" James.

4 titles, 3 different franchises, 4 Finals MVPs
(btw, Steph has 0 Finals MVPs and now one less ring.)

Congrats Lakers.

Congrats LeBron. 17 seasons in, back to the Finals, won the championship as the undisputed most valuable player, put on performances for the ages. Reminder Cheese Eyes was on the Wizards at this point in his career.

Rare is it that I go up for a team that's not mine, but this year, last year, 2011, and the last 2 Kobe titles were exceptions. Maybe '04 Pistons. This is a better version of that Laker team that tried to beat that team.

As for the Heat:

Missed the playoffs last year.
Added Jimmy Butler, two dope rookies.
Made some necessary personnel adjustments.
Humbled so many teams in the East.
Made it to the FInals, and took a series that looked like it might be a blowout or sweep and made it interesting.

Nothing but respect for them. Even Jae Crowder's floppin' ass.

I want to see Django 'nem go up against the Warriors.
2723213, Shoutout to Danny Green....he was solid tonight

2723220, You really gotta drill down to understand how special this 'chip is
Posted by Vex_id, Sun Oct-11-20 10:14 PM
Think about the moment Kawhi and PG were announced to the Clippers - and how they dragged that decision out to try and prevent the Lakers from getting meaningful free agents. By that time - most of the prime free agents were gone - and the Lakers scrambled (brilliantly) to piece together the team on the fly.

But in the end it didn't matter - Bron was just too great - AD proved to be the greatest teammate Bron ever played with -- and this is already a duo worthy of all-time consideration.

From Kawhi claiming he's the new king to L.A. almost everyone picking the clippers to win the 'chip - to Lakers getting 17 in year 17.

With Kobe, Covid, and the historic legacy of this championship - it's right up there with '16 Cleveland in terms of history and one-of-a-kind novelty.

2723268, its really one for the ages man. i cant believe im marking for Bron like this
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Oct-12-20 10:04 AM
in the grand scheme of things it probably isn't an all-time ring, but it's an all-time story for the league. you couldn't make it crazier if you scripted it from July 2019-now

yall know i have never been crazy over Lebron. i have always maintained that if Lebron is the GOAT like his stans thought (prematurely) then it will bear out at the end of his career. he's ours now, and i ride for anybody that rides w/ us, but there was still a bit of a side-eye. an expectation of "you better win because you don't want to be the guy that didn't win for us" (a lot of folks lying if they act like they didnt feel like this)

and then to see Kobe's Viking funeral, and to find out after in the days/weeks after how close him and Bron were. i cried in a way that night that I haven't in my adult life. and then for the first time ever I wanted him to win a game in a deep, emotional way. of course we fucking lost because Dame also got the Mamba mentality in him. when everyone else was afraid to take on the challenge, the pressure of the Purple and Gold, Bron stood up for it. to where when we get to a Game 5 against the Nuggets, and Bron is just lighting it up at every level, I'm on my couch and all over the place like it's Kobe closing out the Nuggets in 2009

I’m spoiled as a fan.

But man. This is a cathartic ass title. People questioning us. Kobe’s death. The uncertainty in the trade - which I was part of mostly because of the Dwight debacle. Dwight Howard. Rajon Rondo. The meme team shit. The shutdown. The bubble. This horrid year.

This is what I needed.

This is a win amongst wins.

I’m happy as shit and also I’m going on vacation tomorrow so I’m stoked I don’t have to watch another game up in Yosemite.

I’ve taken my lumps on LeBron and I’ve learned a lot as a basketball fan over the years. I’ve KNOWN he’s top 3 - Now that he’s on my team? Man. It’s...special.

I love this fucking team. I love the memes. I love the blunders. I love Frank Vogel. I love how Game 5 made me INSANE. I love enjoying greatness now that I’m older and wiser and know the real. This team is amazing and I’m thrilled to be a fan.

2723237, This means so much, as a die hard Kobe fan. Brawn is the perfect man to carry this mnatle
Posted by Cold Truth, Mon Oct-12-20 12:00 AM
I'm sad that Kobe's not aroud to give commentary. We'd have seen him and Gigi on the sidelines for this series.

Etc.

That loss still feels unreal, and heavy.

And then there's the combination of social unrest and COVID.

I don't get the Lakers fans who still hate Lebron, not when he signed, not yesterday, and certainly not today, if the are any of those left.

But Brawn lead like the man among men that he is.

Through Kobe's death.

As a vocal and visible leader in the face of social unrest, political gaslighting, and a gbal pandemic.

And then, on the court, in his 17th season as a player, playing at an absurd level for an NBA player, let alone as one playihis 17th season, and 9th finals series on a decade.

We're incredibly fortunate that he chose this team and this city, at this time.

I'm someone who was good with letting the kids cook, and building from that. Shit, I'm stil salty that BI is gone. I still love Lonzo, and I'm mad he's not here too.

That's not because I don't recognize the obvious immmediate and immense upgrade to Brawn and Brow. It's because I liked the idea that I would get to watch them grow, stumble, fall, and, hopefully, at least one of them would develop along with the team around them into a champion.

The same way I got to watch Kobe's entire career from start to finish. Good, bad, ugly, and all parts in between. That's what it is to be a fan of a team.

This title is different, for a multitude of reasons. I followed these players, but didn't have any emotional connection to them.

Shit, I still love The Machine (Vujecic) and Jordan Farmar as much as I love Fish and Lamar and Pau. Because I'm a Lakers fan, and I got to go through the ups and downs with them. Shit I still have a special place for Lou Williams, because of one absolutely absurd game he had during a shit Lakers season.

Because I'm a Lakers fan, and I went through those ups and downs with him, as that fan.

I had no real attachment to Brawn, Brow, Vogel, Rondo, Dwight, etc before they got here.

But I have that now, even if we hadn't won this title, because I got to go through one of the craziest seasons ever, in the midst of a truly bizarre time for the entire worldin a. season where I watched a player that I had an immediate personal attachment to from the moment he was drafted.

I'm glad Kuz, Alex, and KCP are all here to enjoy this win though. KCP drives me crazy and I've always seen him as the Lebron Tax, but he put his foot into this title. He stamped his place within the Lakers legacy with this series.

But Lebron is the perfect man to hold this mantle, to be the face of this team and this town. He's the leader we desperately needed, and the timing coulhave been better.

Lebron said that Lakers fans don't care about your resume. We care about what you do when you get here.

He's right.

And he did so much more than we had any right to expect, let alone ask or demand. This means much more than just another title, and he's earned that seatin the pantheon of Lakers legends- as a Laker.
2723247, I'm no Laker fan, but I've rarely if ever been more proud of an athlete
Posted by Nodima, Mon Oct-12-20 03:43 AM
I can't immediately think of one, anyway. I was born in '88, so anybody from '80s or '90s (or, of course, before) that people could mention are just words in a book or academic paper for me. The 2000s had issues but they were issues that athletes were (I guess?) uniquely not suited to speak on.

But what that man had to represent for his sport, provide for his People, sacrifice for his art, endure to be where he is at his age and his mileage, express to his country from his platform...

I honestly feel pretty grateful to have got to witness it. That Jimmy Butler provided for a single summer an awesome compliment to LeBron's symbol of mental strength, physical fitness, emotional perseverance and situational levity was true icing on the cake.

I hope people recognize this NBA bubble for what it was, because for me personally it did a lot to lift me out of an increasingly dark place. I'm going to miss these guys while they're out of the public eye in ways I haven't had to consider before.

DeMar DeRozan says LeBron James once reminded a Raptors player how to run one of Toronto's plays
The incident happened during the Eastern Conference finals in 2016
Jack Maloney

By Jack Maloney
Oct 8, 2020 at 6:58 pm ET

LeBron James is one of the best basketball players of all-time in large part due to his natural physical abilities and incredible work ethic. But it's his IQ and complete and total understanding of the game which really sets him apart.

He's always a step ahead of his opponents, on both sides of the ball, and a recent story from DeMar DeRozan emphasizes his genius. DeRozan joined JJ Redick and Tommy Alter on their podcast, "The Old Man & The Three" on Thursday, and shared an incredible moment from the 2016 Eastern Conference finals when DeRozan was playing for the Raptors, and LeBron was on the Cavaliers.

At one point during a game, DeRozan said that one of his teammates forgot the play the Raptors were running, so LeBron just told him what to do.

"It's definitely different. I remember for years I always caught so much flack, us being the better team or whatever it was in the Eastern Conference finals, and people not realizing it's tough to get past this mother-----. I don't care who you are. To see him come to the West and do the same thing is a testament to his greatness, and his IQ to the game. In '16 when we went to the Eastern Conference finals, we won Games 3 and 4, and it was like a whole nother mindset clicked for him in those next two games, where it was like 'it's closeout.'"

"I remember -- I don't know if I even told nobody other than my close circle -- I remember, it was a play we was trying to run and one of our teammates forgot the play, and 'Bron told him the play. Like it was some crazy s---. We calling a play and he was like, 'what?' And Bron told him what our play was. It just shows you how locked in this dude be when it comes to winning time. You see it on both ends man, both ends. That's just a testament to who he is, why he's been to 10 Finals, why he's on the verge of getting his fourth ring, everything. It's crazy."

Just unbelievable. Of all the stories about LeBron's basketball IQ throughout the years, this one is right up there at the top. It's one thing to remember the game plan and scouting report, but LeBron was so locked in he had the Raptors' entire playbook down as well, and to the point that he could rattle it off in the middle of a game.

The Raptors ended up losing that ECF matchup 4-2, and then were also eliminated from the playoffs by LeBron and Co. in each of the next two seasons. And no wonder. It's hard to beat a better team when they know your plays better than you do.

In terms of the bigger picture, though, it's another reminder of LeBron's greatness, and just how difficult it is to beat him in the postseason. When he says things like, "I have no weakness," as he did earlier this month, it's hard to argue when you hear tales like this.
