Mostly JV teams until Sept 26th when the SEC kicks off.

So far everyone looking rusty as hell.

B1G clusterfuck still not resolved but rumors swirling today that a mid-October start is on the table.

PAC 12...not even sure that conference still exists.
2719863, Big Ten cluster fuck continues but the Pac 12 has been united
Posted by calij81, Sat Sep-12-20 01:30 PM
The Pac 12 has been doing its thing and is working to partner with a company for testing. I think they stay on schedule for a Spring start but they could start sooner and I hope they do. I hope the Big Ten, Pac 12, and MWC stick together and all start together.

I honestly think Trump and other Big Ten Star Governors are only doing this because the Big Ten has a new commissioner and he is also black so they are trying to bully him. If he were a white man I don’t think you see so much pressure.
2719867, they'll be playing by themselves...*shrugs*

2719870, Everyone is basically playing by themselves right now anyways
Posted by calij81, Sat Sep-12-20 02:57 PM
CFB is looking more like my daughters preschool with independent and adjacent play than an actual season right now.

Big Ten got caught up in politics and is starting to crack under the pressure. It sucks but it isn’t unexpected due to where these schools are located and the fact that these coaches keep going against their own conference decision and aren’t facing any consequences for doing so is a bad look.

Trump is just pushing the big ten around right now for his own political reasons and it allows him to undermine a black man in power, so it is a double win for him.

The ACC and Big 12 are already postponing games this weekend and the season is just starting. We will see if these conferences are even still playing games once October comes around.
2719871, trump made a couple of tweets but i don't think that got any traction
Posted by 3xKrazy, Sat Sep-12-20 03:16 PM
or had much of an impact one way or the other.

the fact that coaches are irked about what's going on is the least of B1G's legal and PR problems right now. and many of these coaches have options outside of the conference so it's not like they're going to be held hostage for fear of repercussions.

looks to me like the other conferences are full go. when the B1G suddenly cancelled a month ago I would say the possibility of them getting bailed out by other conferences following suit was a much much stronger possibility than it is today.
2719872, We will see how far these conferences get
Posted by calij81, Sat Sep-12-20 03:26 PM
VaTech/Virginia already postponed their game.

TCU and Baylor postponed their games today. Iowa State probably wishes it had postponed its game.

It is hard enough during a regular season to make up postponed games so it will be interesting to see how these conferences play a balanced season and make up multiple postponed games.

Playing football during Covid and then going into flu season is going to be very tough to manage. These college kids aren’t going to just sit in their dorms in between games and will be hanging out with non football players and going to parties so I expect CFB to mirror MLB but be even worse when it comes to Covid breakout clusters.

Hopefully no kid gets really sick or dies from playing this season.

On the day the Big 10 bows to pressure and reinstates its college football season, Ohio State researchers find that 15% of athletes who get Covid-19 have symptoms of myocarditis.

https://t.co/ZcybbpffXP

the talking heads on espn were all over this myocarditis issue when it was just a rumor that the pac 12 canceled because of early warning signs about this.

now we have real data coming out and its pretty bad. but those same talking heads have pretty much ignored or just quickly gloss over the issue and now theyre all celebrating the return of big 10 football. desmond howard was basically just parroting big 10 pr talking points when he was mr athlete health a few weeks ago.

Most parents want their kids to play because they don’t believe Covid is a real threat to their kids, they believe this will hurt their children’s chances to go pro and they just want to watch football.

Desmond Howard can't say Nebraska needs to be kicked out of the Big Ten for wanting to try and play observing safe protocols and then make social media posts about being excited for Notre Dame football on Saturday.

Does that dumbshit know that the UNMC is just down the road and is one of the premier medical facilities in a pandemic? They were the national destination for Ebola patients and a big part of the rapid testing that allowed the Big Ten to try and play.

Kevin Warren and the rest of the Presidents could have avoided this whole thing by being transparent and open in communication, instead they operated in a silo and didn't want to divulege their metrics they use.

Pac-12 was open and trasparent and nobody had an issue with it.

Hypocritical Desmond can take his 1/2 a trophy and kick rocks.

Texas has the third-most NFL players by state.
2722143, He's probably gotta take a step down..
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Sat Oct-03-20 06:19 PM
He's probably gotta take a step down and take on a job at a mid-tier Power 5 school like Colorado or Northwestern before one of the Blue Bloods take a flyer on him.

But I wonder how much of his lack of success is on him or just the culture at Texas? Take out the Mack Brown and Darrel Royal years
and their performance is disappointing. Nothing on the field shows that UT's culture elevates the play of the talent or the coaching.

They should be a perennial Top 10-12 team but rarely are.

I haven't watched Texas much since Herrman's been there but I haven't seen him work any miracles given the talent he has. But then again, most coaches there don't.

It might end up being the best for him to get away from Texas' dysfunction.
2722146, this is my question
Posted by 3xKrazy, Sat Oct-03-20 07:27 PM

>But I wonder how much of his lack of success is on him or just

maybe back in the day, but college football is too competitive now. USC and Michigan have 15 national championships between them; that don't mean anything but another fancy banner for Oregon and Wisconsin to dance in front of when they win.

if Nick Saban walks out that door and bama doesn't hire the right coach, they will atrophy and start getting their own asses kicked in the SEC despite two decades of culture.

Herman was supposed to succeed "on-paper", and he didn't. doesn't mean he can't be a good coach somewhere else or Texas can't do better.

>Herman was supposed to succeed "on-paper", and he didn't.

to know if this is the area in which herman has failed.

but I'd have to imagine he would've picked up a few more wins with okudah, dobbins and garrett wilson on his roster.

losing those players to out of state schools would've been unheard of in the mack brown era.

but national recruiting has changed quite a bit over the last 15 years so maybe this is just something that a school like texas is going to have to live with and overcome.
2722219, I see your point
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Sun Oct-04-20 03:44 PM
The difference in talent among the top teams is very slight. It's coaching, especially at the mid-tier schools, that makes all the difference in performance.

I was referring more to UT poorly evaluating its culture and the effect of that culture on the performance of the team.

Yes, they spend an ungodly amount of money at football, but I think their national image is outsized given the history of the program. That's all I was trying to get across.

I think the jury is still out on Herrman. He's doing better than Strong but 'on paper' the team was supposed to 'be back' by now. Granted, this is his first Power 5 job and he's a young coach so he's going to have gaffes. I think at most schools he'd be fine. But, UT thinks its more than what it is. If he's let go, he'd probably get another shot at a top job if he rebounds first at another school. ala Lane Kiffin

I'm probably coming off as harsh on both Herrman and UT. I lived in Austin and reading and seeing their entitlement over the years has soured me. The way that UT ran off Strong didn't sit right for me. Not so much because they decided to move on from Charlie (he was a really good man and you could tell the players loved him. He simply didn't win enough by the end.) But, and I know I'm being racial here, but Hermman just seems like he's a good 'ol boys wet dream. He's brash and outspoken and he's tough on his players. If he had a more mild mannered personality I'd probably be alright with him. i admit that that bias clouds my idea of him.

murked this year regardless.

no big 12 and no pac 12 is going to leave very slim pickings.

I don't see a 2nd big 10 team...especially with PSU's best player sitting out.

so it will be the usual push to make it a sec invitational tournament w/perhaps a slight chance they throw the group of 5 a bone this year and let a BYU or cincy in the mix to serve as a default bye game for the 1 seed (which of course will not be OSU)

because playing quarterback during the coaching change was like being stuck in a Butch Jones-designed "Saw" room. he bizarrely regressed in 2019 -- like throwing absolute funballs every other play -- but at this point, inconsistency is just his marker. especially with accuracy.

I don't really harp on it though, because SEC fans hate all their own quarterbacks. and individually critiquing guys too hard this season is sad -- no spring practice, half of them were in and out of quarantine so no time to develop, and the whole stress of a pandemic within their personal circles.

Kirby has completely imprinted his style on that side of the ball with waves of front seven wreckers and a secondary that contests everything. they're smart, too, and contain explosives while still mixing up different pressure looks.

their quarterback...is OK. he can beat all the mid-tier SEC teams but he doesn't have any field stretching ability and eats off play-action, in-between the hashes and dump-offs. their backs get a lot of YAC but their receivers are pretty average outside that freshman TE, who looks like another Kyle Pitts.

I don't trust Kirby to make the best in-game calls, though. the two times he went for it on fourth down in the first half were not very good -- the first time, they were on their side of the 50 and Tennessee had gained like 20 total yards. the goal-line call was fine, but the wrong running back and the wrong play.

I made that amendment while watching bama's D. And they showed again last night that they're really a step down from what we're used to.I've never seen them so soft up the middle.

But ya, you just can't win in 2020 with Stetson as your quarterback. This isn't the era for a feel good story quarterback.

I'm thinking the SEC would rather have UF make it to the sec champ game if they're hoping to get a 2nd team in the playoffs.

they beat a horrible FSU team and a 1-3 Louisville team. and they lost 7 games last year, so there's no immediate precedent.

Venables still the best DC in the nation. Clemson is eating their souls on defense; should be interesting when they play UNC's offense.

2723515, LSU UF rescheduled for Dec 12th due to COVID (link)

No surprise here, it was only a matter of time before one of the big SEC games got rescheduled.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/30115340/saturday-game-lsu-tigers-florida-gators-postponed

Saturday's game between No. 10 Florida and LSU at "The Swamp" has been postponed after the Gators saw a surge in positive COVID-19 tests this week, it was announced Wednesday.

The game has tentatively been rescheduled for the SEC's built-in bye week on Dec. 12, which is the week before the SEC championship.

The SEC said on Twitter that the game was postponed after "positive tests & subsequent quarantine of individuals with the Florida FB program."

Florida has 18 positives among scholarship players and three walk-ons, athletic director Scott Stricklin said Wednesday. He said the players and staff members who tested positive are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms. Stricklin said he did not have an exact number of players who are now under contact-trace quarantine, but when adding in those with the positive cases and non-COVID related injured players, Florida had less than 50 scholarship players available.

Florida pauses football following virus outbreak

The SEC's Return to Activity and Medical Guidance Task Force stipulates that a team must have at least 53 scholarship players available to play a game, including seven offensive linemen (with one center), four defensive linemen and one quarterback.

"It can sneak up you in a hurry," Stricklin said. "The key thing is you've got to have the ability to push the brake when things start to occur like what we're seeing right now. You've got to be willing to hit pause occasionally. The SEC schedule was set up with an event like this in mind. As much as we want to give our kids the opportunity to compete, we understand this isn't a normal year and we're going to have the ability to adapt to unusual circumstances such as this."

Florida shut down its football program on Tuesday after a number of tests came back positive.

Stricklin said there is suspicion that the trip to play Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, this past weekend is the root of the outbreak. However, a couple of UF players said they had allergy-type symptoms before leaving for the game and didn't report it to UF officials. Stricklin said he learned early Monday that players were reporting symptoms, and the standard Sunday testing revealed multiple positives. That is when Florida started doing daily testing, and the numbers have increased since then. Stricklin said the team would continue doing daily testing until they have the spread under control.

Mullen on Wednesday backtracked on a statement made Saturday in which he said he would like to see 100% capacity at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, citing a recent decision by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to lift COVID-19 restrictions that had limited the size of public gatherings.

This is the second SEC game this week that has been postponed, joining Missouri-Vanderbilt.

Because Florida has so many players who are positive and in quarantine, next week's game against Missouri could also potentially be in jeopardy. CDC guidelines say those with positive tests must isolate for 10 days, while contact tracing requires a 14-day quarantine. Stricklin said it was too early to know whether the Missouri game would have to be postponed as well.

"Well, it's hard to speculate right now," Stricklin said. "Obviously we'll be in communication with the Southeastern Conference and probably get Missouri, obviously as our next opponent, to kind of keep them abreast of what we're seeing, and we'll continue as I said our regular testing protocol for those who aren't in quarantine, and hopefully we don't have any more positives and we're able to get on the other side of this and then we can get everyone back in a situation where you can go compete again."

ESPN's Andrea Adelson and Mark Schlabach contributed to this report.

Not that I'm surprised, our media representation has been bullshit since at least the end of the Pelini era, if not Solich. But it would seem the majority of Husker fans who care enough to be on a forum dedicated to them believe this is a conspiracy by the Wisconsin athletic department to avoid a game with a Big Ten West rival and reduce our strength of schedule for bowl opportunities.

Gotta love it.

It is also funny that Nebraska fans think this is a conspiracy. I don’t think Wisconsin was too worried about Nebraska this season.

Nebraska’s Adidas line is pretty sleek and the hat matches perfectly. Now that Husker gear is in season it’s actually a lot more common to see young people in MAGA hats than it has been since he first won the election. Saw a bunch as I got out of work last night from the rally.

In a way, it’s nice to know right away, right?

Michigan went in as -21 favorites against Michigan St. Line made zero sense. Minnesota is trash, which means Michigan isn’t all that good so the win was a mirage. But since Minnesota was overrated the win against them overrated Michigan.

Kansas St was given +6.5 against W virgina..Since Kansas St is undefeated, that line looked like a joke. So of course people jumped on it thinking it was an easy win....Nope. It was a trap to get you to bet on KSU. West Virginia is beating the shit out of them.

Next week’s Clemson/Notre Dame line is going to be really interesting...watch they make Clemson the underdog and everyone is going to jump on Notre Dame. They’ll probably make Clemson +4.5 dog if they lose this game against BC.....

Clemson is missing 4 players....that’s why they are losing ...but they are hands down still the best team In the country, and I’m a Notre Dame fan.

to be honest, ASU got extremely lucky in the first half with those 2 redzone turnovers. I was really impressed with the ASU run game but the receivers just could not get open. pretty much impossible to hold a two score lead in the 4th when you are 3 and outing and not changing field position.

but ASU still needed to make just... ONE PLAY... had so many chances to make that one play and just never did. good learning experience i guess (they lost a few games like this last year too)

Notre Dame has the better defense, and I knew it was going to come down to who could get a stop.

ND’s oline can block its ass off, and the defense rushed to get pressure on the QB, but the oline picked it up. ....so Clemson was fucked, because the secondary was in man to man.

2725264, Harbaugh is 44-19 in the NFL
Posted by allStah, Sat Nov-14-20 08:30 PM
He isn’t getting the recruits. No one wants to play in Michigan anymore. Most top players don’t want to play in the big 10, unless it’s OSU or PSU.

I don’t think it’s all on Harbaugh, but he is in way over his head. He is not attractive as college coach.

1 yard of offense in the 1st quarter??
2725265, I think he's checked out (at least for this season)
Posted by will_5198, Sat Nov-14-20 08:42 PM
Day is recruiting circles around Harbaugh, and the guys he does get do not develop like they would at elite programs

if Harbaugh doesn't work at Michigan, they need to scrap that bizarre "Michigan Men Only" modus operandi -- he was the perfect example and still failed (for now)
2725272, RE: I think he's checked out (at least for this season)

Liberty would beat the shit out of them...

But you guys are right he might be checked out mentally. ....

he just can’t coach up this talent.

Even when they were clearly better than OSU they lost.

I’ve rarely seen a Michigan offense that goes downfield. Its boring football.
2725312, the development has sucked but he hasn't recruited at an elite level
Posted by 3xKrazy, Sun Nov-15-20 01:49 PM
not even close. especially at the offensive skill positions.

and he hasn't recruited ohio at all which has always been integral part of mich's successful teams in the past. even nationally, osu and mich aren't competing for the same recruits.
2725315, Bro
Posted by allStah, Sun Nov-15-20 02:03 PM

Living on the street is the only life those dogs have and will ever know. Michigan is like a show dog that got abandoned on the streets of a poor rural town in Appalachia, which is fitting since Appalachia State took their football soul. They remember what the good life was like and are trying desperately to find their way back but they keep getting lost in these rural back country roads because all these trailers have the same damn MAGA flags and empty Bud Lite cans.

I’m 12-5 in the NFL

And yes it was an insult. They were up 28-7 at half time. It should have ended 52-14

Just bad defensive play giving up home run plays in the second half .

They got the W. So I’m good.
2725973, You go up 28-7 at halftime
Posted by allStah, Sat Nov-21-20 04:05 PM
but then play terrible defense in the second half. Did they get complacent or get tired ?
Indiana threw for 500 yards, the majority of it in the second half.

Doesn’t matter ,Day has to correct that. This should have been a blowout

And Fields was trying to win the Hesiman with this game. He was trying to do too many electric things instead of doing the smart thing. 2 ints for his entire career before today, throws 3 today, and all of them were bad decisions.

Anyway, still the big dogs in the big ten, and that so called Indiana defense gave up 300 yards on the ground and 40 plus points. They are still basketball team to me.

Interesting that there was a bigger dog piling for scott frost than dabo...
2726228, Dabo is an asshole but is he any worse they Urban or Saban?
Posted by calij81, Wed Nov-25-20 12:43 PM
Yeah, Dabo, Urban and Saban are all assholes but they get a pass because they win. I am not saying that is fair or right but it is the reality of CFB and it is the nature of CFB. Frost seems like an asshole but he isn’t winning so he gets roasted.
2726234, Are you familiar with Dabo's statements on BLM and racial issues?
Posted by 3xKrazy, Wed Nov-25-20 01:05 PM
dude is on the wrong side of absolutely every damn thing.

And compare Saban's statements to LSU cancelling due to covid vs FSU cancelling. Not even in the same stratosphere.

Urban isn't coaching currently so who cares.

Frost wanted to play football. That's it. Whether or not he’s winning has no impact on the morality of his stance. If anything that further demonstrates the frivolity of who we selectively decide to dog-pile on.
2726237, I am familiar with his comments about BLM, I’m sure the majority
Posted by calij81, Wed Nov-25-20 01:21 PM
In the SEC, Big Ten and college football coaches in general feel the same way. That doesn’t make those comments right but to pretend that Dabo is the only one that feels that way in CFB is naive.

LSU and Ed just got caught up in a Baylor like cover up of assaults and rapes, where is the outcry for that? Where is the NCAA? What are the penalties? CFB is full of shitty people and the worse part is all those shitty people not only get away with their shorty behavior, they are also in charge.

Frost wanted to play football in the middle of a pandemic, probably believed that canceling football was some big QAnon conspiracy against him and Nebraska. Frost got roasted for wanting to play football during a pandemic, now CFB is going to try to limp along and finish this season when they probably shouldn’t have played at all. Once again, if Nebraska was actually good or relevant like Bama, Clemson or OSU then he probably doesn’t get so much shit for his comments.

I know Urban isn’t coaching right today but that doesn’t excuse him of his own shady shit he did and overlooked in his career.

>but to pretend that Dabo is the only one that feels that way
>in CFB is naive.

There's no naivety here. Dabo is the only one who's been outspoken about it and the only one throwing a tantrum and making accusations after a cancellation. Regardless of how many other coaches feel similarly about the pandemic and racial equality (and we have no idea what the true percentage is), they were at least wise enough to keep their mouth shut about it.

>
>LSU and Ed just got caught up in a Baylor like cover up of
>assaults and rapes, where is the outcry for that?

Exactly. See post #264. And this underscores my whole point of cfb fans being real selective with their moral outrage.

>
>Frost probably believed that canceling football was some big QAnon
>conspiracy against him and Nebraska.

We have no idea what he believed and these types of generalizations are baseless and unfair.

>Frost got roasted for
>wanting to play football during a pandemic

And the other 100+ coaches who wanted to play didn't get roasted because...? Or the coaches of other fall NCAA sports, HS coaches, and coaches of youth sports? It's not like Frost was a lone pioneer with this shit.

There's a grand total of 4 teams with any legit chance of winning a NC...this isnt about wins and losses. Or that only coaches of winning programs are spared from ridicule.

>I know Urban isn’t coaching right today but that doesn’t
>excuse him of his own shady shit he did and overlooked in his
>career.

What does XYZ coach from whatever year in the past have to do with Dabo running his mouth in 2020 about issues (pandemic and social justice) that have never impacted cfb up until this year?

There's no precedent for this. You brought up Saban which would serve as relevant comparison given that he's currently coaching. His response to these issues have been wildly different than Dabo's.

And the idea that Urban has been spared from media/fan ridicule or given a pass because he wins is simply not true at all. He's actually the most talked about coach that I can ever remember. If that dude so much as breathed in the wrong direction it was going to be an ESPN headline.

Posted by soulfunk, Sun Nov-29-20 10:24 AM
the fact that we aren’t playing in front of crowds. The fan reaction and environment at the Big House would be brutal at this point.

I think he resigns himself after we get killed by OSU this year. He’s been a shell of himself the last few years, just collecting a paycheck. He also caused some friction with the AD and president campaigning for the Big Ten to start the season at the time the school was against it, so some of the goodwill he had is likely gone. Rack on this dumpster fire of a season and I gotta believe he’ll make the call himself.
2726418, yep, he's getting bailed out on multiple fronts

not playing in front of crowds, playing less games in general means less chances for embarrassing losses...and the biggest one of all, he may get bailed out from having to suffer the ugliest loss of his lifetime to osu. I'm doubting that game gets played at this point. And with the 21 day big 10 rule I'm not even sure who will be able to suit up for osu.

2726361, Yeah you can tell the Pac 12 didn’t practice much and rushed into this season
Posted by calij81, Sat Nov-28-20 09:15 PM
Cal should be better than it is but got hardly any practice time in due to both California and Berkeley Covid guidelines. That hurt the team, especially the offense because we have a new OC and RB coach.

I would say the Pac 12 is probably on par with the Big 12.
2726454, it's not about the lack of prep time. it's the talent level.
Posted by 3xKrazy, Sun Nov-29-20 03:37 PM
it's on a steady decline and the recruiting rankings are showing it as well. the best west coast talent is leaving the region.

there's just a lot of parity right now and I see that continuing in the years to come.

oregon had a bunch of opt outs so they def got hurt in that regard but not sure about anyone else.

tv people are still talking about sc having a '14% chance to make the playoffs'...meanwhile I know none of them have actually watched them play because they completely suck and shouldve lost to asu and u of a.

limited. It wasn’t an impressive win at all, and they should definitely fall. They pulled away in the 4th.

But the committee ain’t going to do that.

VT is the dumbest football team I have ever seen. They showed zero urgency. Not once did they go no huddle. They Just ran and burned clock as if they were ahead every quarter. When you get down 20 points with a quarter to go why the fock are you burning clock and running the ball? Letting the play clock run all the way down...

2726969, very sad to watch Tennessee right now
Posted by will_5198, Sun Dec-06-20 01:57 PM
the losing cloud over the team is tangible; good players are being affected by the pressure of everything going wrong.

no real plan at quarterback. $2 million a year for an experienced OC running an offense that is as uninspired as the first year of Pruitt's tenure, making me think it has a lot to do with the head coach's preferences.

for the first time under Pruitt, I don't see any direction. that's bad, even more so than the lack of wins.

amazing to see the diverge between Indiana and Tennessee after their bowl game last season.

Posted by soulfunk, Thu Dec-10-20 01:26 PM
that Harbaugh needs to go. There are rumors of an extension being offered which makes ZERO sense to me. Let them play and get blown out and make it clear.

That being said, if the Covid issues are legit, then they are legit.
2727448, I've heard varying reports on the number of cases
Posted by 3xKrazy, Sat Dec-12-20 03:19 PM
From only a few cases to 40+ cases...

I suppose we'll never know the truth.

But I find it hard to believe that if mich was having a good season, or had a shot to beat osu, that they wouldn't have showed up with whatever they had and gave it a go. Just like other teams in the B1G are doing on a weekly basis, including osu last week.

What bothers me even more is that there seemed to be absolutely no push to reschedule the game for the following week. And all that anyone showed concerned for was whether or not to manipulate some dumb rule to get osu into this farce of a 'championship' game. Whether we played some snooze fest vs Iowa or NW or Wisky next week means nothing to me as a fan. The playoff committee says it doesn't matter to them either. I'd have much rather played mich, resume builder be damned.

Middle aged/elderly blowhards are so concerned about maintaining the tradition of this game that they would sooner have a a heart attack and die then make the obvious decision to move it out of the noon time slot, yet seemingly have no issue of not playing the game at all, which had been done consecutively for the past 102 years. Go figure.

>that Harbaugh needs to go. There are rumors of an extension
>being offered which makes ZERO sense to me. Let them play and
>get blown out and make it clear.

Yes, even more reason to suggest that non covid related issues entered into the move to cancel. Losing by 70 and then signing harb to an extension would've been a rough one to pull off.

the 4th and 2 was on the goal line so not much you can do there. either kick or run a play, either way you're gonna score. if anything a fg comes off as looking more petty than running a regular play.

I thought sumlin was a great hire for that program as well. hard to figure out what's in the water over there in tucson. if you can field a competitive team in pullman or Corvallis you should be able to put something decent together in tucson, a place that has a lot to offer.

That’s not what lost the game. LSU was in that ass all game. And it was tied at that point I believe. It was a terrible penalty, yes.

Plus Florida had a chance to tie it and missed the FG.

Trask threw 2 picks , and Florida’s defense got ate the fock up.

And trask’s terrible throws were before the fog that limited visibility.

2727656, The things you mentioned are football related. Throwing a shoe is not.

Or better yet, just beat Bama and you might still get a playoff spot.

Also, perhaps coach your players a bit better so they don’t throw shoes and incur stupid penalties.

the lack of accountability from some of these coaches is really mind blowing.

instead of focusing on the task in front of you and your only way into the playoff (beating bama) you're gonna sit there and cry about some team in another conference that was affected by the pandemic. just pointless.

I think that Lovie's 17-39 record (10-33 in the Big Ten) speaks for itself. But some of these programs think they should be winning chips every year but that's just not the case. Illini football is who we thought they were. They might get the occasional year where they surprise people.

Prior to Lovie, Ron Zook had the longest run as coach with 6 years. His record was 34-51. The "glory days" are gone. Illini football is just there to take Ls.

but literally every single game i watched this past saturday the announcers took a break from the game action to discuss how unfair it was that the big 10 changed the rules to let OSU in.

it's next level stupidity given that osu actually beat indiana head to head.

meanwhile, if it weren't for the rule change you'd have a 3-5 PSU team playing in the big 10 champ game this weekend. have fun with that.

What do people want? A 64 team tournament like basketball? 32? 16? 8? There would still be crying about who was “left out”
2727786, this would be the perfect year to go to an 8 team playoff

but no way would OSU be 4th with 5 games. They would be 6th or some shit.

and cincy has played a grand total of 6(!) games and hasn't even played since Nov 21.

so now that we've established that this is strictly a personal problem for you and osu, we can move on.

but it does highlight the originally presented idea that cfb fans will cry and complain over anything and everything, facts and logic be damned.

furthermore, have you actually watched sc play? I've seen all 5 of their games and theyre wildly fortunate to be 5-0 and not 2-3. they're not good at all and would be 30 point underdogs to any of the top 3 teams.

so sc makes the playoffs and are down 4 touchdowns by the end of the first quarter and cfb fans turn the tv off and hit up messagebaords and twitter to cry and complain. because we all know that it is the divine right of the cfb fan to be blessed with competitive post season games.

2727856, Cincinnati has played 8 games homie.. calm down a bit
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Dec-18-20 09:09 AM
and in an 8 team playoff I’m going to put 1 team from each of the power 5 schools in my hypothetical.

but this is why I would put OSU and USC further back in the Top 8 right today and no, I don’t think USC is anything special but they are undefeated and probably faced “better” competition than OSU this year.

better in quotation because I don’t think the talent level is skewed towards one team like the Big 10 this year.

2727861, my bad, i had checked AAC conf standings

the issue is that you didn't want OSU as top 4 in the current system

>no, I don’t think USC is anything
>special but they are undefeated and probably faced
>“better” competition than OSU this year.

def not better. at best I would give it a push because both conferences have sucked and it's not really worth analyzing team by team. but there are several teams in the B1G that would beat sc, including indiana and psu who were on osu's schedule. sc has made it a habit in recent years of losing/getting pushed around by mediocre B1G teams in bowl games.

2727875, USC beat PSU in their past Rose Bowl?
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Dec-18-20 12:20 PM
JuJu went off in that second half.

Most years I would agree with on the Big 10 having better talent but PSU lost a ton of players to injury and covid. They are trash this year.

I’m from Pittsburgh so a follow PSU but don’t get emotional over them because I’m a PITT fan.

but my whole point about OSU is their lack of movement while missing 3 games and I believe Cinci dropped after a missed game or 2. Show some consistency at least.

While I “think” OSU may be top 4 I still cant give it to them just based on the eye test cause they haven’t played enough decent teams. This is why I believe an 8 team playoff would be perfect this year.

2727881, yes they had a big comeback vs psu
Posted by 3xKrazy, Fri Dec-18-20 12:57 PM
the year prior to that they lost as favorites vs wisky

the year prior to that they eked out a 3 point win as heavy favs vs nebraska playing without a coach

year after the rose bowl they got drilled by osu

last year they got drilled by a mediocre iowa team

usc isn't physical enough to match up with even mediocre B1G teams. and their talent level has dropped off steadily over the last decade. tonight they're 3 point favorites at home vs a team that lost to oregon st. and cal. what would the spread be vs the top 3?

I'm not here to hype psu at all. they suck. but the psu team that played osu in week 2 would absolutely beat sc. have you seen sc play this year? no snark, im genuinely curious.

>but my whole point about OSU is their lack of movement while
>missing 3 games and I believe Cinci dropped after a missed
>game or 2. Show some consistency at least.

cincy dropping is wack but that has nothing to do with osu. the committee drops teams like cincy and elevates/maintains teams like florida/uga to justify their top 4 rankings and to give them an easy out of their desired top 4 unexpectedly loses in in their champ game.

i think the committee should just rank teams 1-4 and leave it at that. they're far too incompetent to handle anything beyond that.
2727885, I’ve seen USC. They aren’t anything special this year
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Dec-18-20 01:19 PM
but this is also a hard year to judge teams with late starts. No one has looked dominant besides Bama this year IMO.

and I definitely think Cinci and OSU are related. Teams who don’t play should be treated equally if undefeated. Either move both up or down or don’t move either of them. The committee just can’t leave shit alone. You have undefeated teams scrambling to play someone to rank higher and the typical powerhouse trams just sit pretty while not playing for a month.

sc hasn't been hard to judge. they won 3 games they had absolutely no business winning and are beyond lucky to be 5-0. they're not a playoff caliber team.

if you think osu was happy to not be playing then I don't know what to tell you. other then you're incredibly wrong. the lack of games has been a huge disadvantage for osu in terms of getting reps and improving as a team. again, we're playing football in a pandemic and games are getting cancelled left and right and every metric we would ordinarily use to evaluate teams has been flipped upside down. you don't seem to be respecting this.

when osu schedules 5 games in a normal year as a way to back their way into the playoffs then let's talk.
2727938, and we can now officially dead the SC playoff team talk

would prove that osu is a top 4 team?

if you don't want osu in the playoffs, then it's because you have a personal problem with osu. which is fine, hate is what makes this sport so much fun...but you have to at least call it what it is. a personal problem.

we're trying to play football in a PANDEMIC and it's been a hot mess from the jump. this was never going to be fair or thorough or whatever it is that you're envisioning. shit was gonna have to be adjusted and manipulated on the fly. we'll be lucky to pull off these 3 playoff games at all.

and there's even less of a need to expand the playoffs this year given the glaring talent disparity between the top 3 and the rest of cfb. and unfortunately, that's not a temporary pandemic problem, but a much larger issue the sport is facing down the road.

2727838, well, yeah.. cause thats how its usually done
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Dec-17-20 10:57 PM
but you can’t just give out lopsided W’s for games you haven’t played.

well, you shouldn’t but here we are.

2727853, yes here we are in a pandemic
Posted by 3xKrazy, Fri Dec-18-20 08:51 AM
>well, you shouldn’t but here we are.

where adjusting on the fly is necessary and nothing is the way we really want it to be. as it is in all phases of our lives.

if OSU had avoided what would've been competitive games then that would be a different story.

but this speaks to the true problem which is the talent disparity between the top teams and the rest of cfb who really have no chance at competing in 2020 and beyond. it's a concerning issue and also why expanding to 8 teams makes absolutely no sense this year**

so osu gets in because anyone with two eyeballs can see they're one of the top 4, but in the process we have to convince ourselves that Indiana and NW (and florida and georgia) are really really good teams in order to justify our common sense decision. it's disingenuous.

**maybe letting more teams in could help the talent disparity in the long run?
2727790, There is zero equity.
Posted by allStah, Thu Dec-17-20 11:07 AM
So people have a right to cry. The NCAA basketball tourney is a fair competitive structure, that shows no favoritism or privilege to power conferences. The ranking and seeding of teams are not based on an eye test, or some unproven mechanism to determine the status or talent level of a team.

The college football PO system is a flawed system that does not properly determine who the best teams in the nation are. A committee selects the top teams based on perception, and that process usually favors the power conferences. It’s a system that is biased, so mid major teams don’t get the recognition and support that they deserve.

Unfortunately, there will never be a perfect system for college football, but the goal is to get close to perfect. An 8 team PO system would provide a fair system.

or they could do a PO system based on conference champions:

There are 11 Conferences. Select the champion of each conference + the runner up of the conference of the previous NCAA champion. So let’s say Bama won the NCAA title last season, and they come from the SEC. Well, the runner up of the SEC conference would get the 12th selection.

Take those 12 teams and put them in a PO, giving the top 4 teams a bye based on record. The PO would be completed in 4 weeks, and the games would be prime time games played on Monday/ Tuesday night ( MNF is over by then). This would give football its’ version of March Madness in January.
2727792, like will said, crying is endemic to the sport at this point
Posted by 3xKrazy, Thu Dec-17-20 11:36 AM
it's just recently gotten to a level that's beyond nauseating thanks to social media, the style in which sports media is presented (in shouting, argumentative form), and just overall content overload.

a bunch of us said it from the jump that 4 teams was not going to appease people and there would be a new round of crying to get 8 teams and so on and so forth.

the 4 team playoff has done serious damage to the sport and for as flawed as the BCS system was...it was probably better.

what's funny is, all the cfb haters who didn't like cfb because there wasn't a playoff system didn't suddenly develop interest once the playoff system was implemented. The playoff system which they had spent years crying and clamoring for.

you either get cfb or you don't. and in most cases you had to grow up with it to appreciate it. no playoff system is going to change that. and a lot of the crying is simply from people who don't get the sport but resent its popularity.
2727799, nailed it. this season should not have even been played.

Ohio State ran all over Clemson last year, and at one point was up 16-0. Then the referees made terrible calls that allowed Clemson back into the game, and Dobbins injured his ankle.

- ohio state’s best defense player gets ejected for an accidental helmet hit
- dobbins gets injured
- referee take away a TD from a clear Clemson fumble off a catch.

Hands down Ohio Sate was the better team, unfortunately the score didn’t reflect that.

So I don’t get what you mean by ND and Ohio ST being sacrificial lambs
