2719563, NBA Coaching Carousel
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Sep-09-20 01:10 PM
Let’s consolidate our thoughts and what happens in real time, here. So...one hire...introduced, today: Steve Nash in Brooklyn

Current openings:
Indiana
Oklahoma City
Philadelphia
Chicago
New Orleans

What are you hearing? What do you feel? I’ll put it out there...I don’t think Bud is going anywhere. Just my feeling, Indy interviewed Dave Joerger and Becky Hammond. Chicago and Indy are said to be interested in Billy D. Thunder Twitter unleashed a flurry of names, last night...but I really don’t think it’s gonna be an established guy. It’s gotta be someone willing to drive the tank, for a minute. I’d love to see Antonio Daniels.
2719564, would loooooove Billy in New Orleans

A career full of regular season wins with absolutely nothing to show for it.

Development, and Kidd is still coaching.

And fock cassell and Ty Lue. I don’t want them anywhere near my Youngins.

For me it was Atkinson, Kidd, or Donovan. Proven developers.

Monty is already coaching. He is good with development as well....

Now everybody else? I don’t give Fock if they are from the grasslands of Wakanda ...this is about development

2721114, who are you giving Donovan credit for "developing"?

again. I can more see SVG coaching, before Jeff. Kinda like, remember back some years ago...every single offseason in the NFL...every vacancy was rumored to be connected to Bill Cowher. Dude chilled on out and got that studio money and never coached, again.

Same thing with Gruden but he eventually did come back.

If you already a millionaire from coaching, and you can continue to make a really good amount from a studio gig for SIGNIFICANTLY less work/time/stress on your part, why wouldn't you? I understand how they might have a hunger for coaching, and some are thinking about their legacy, but it's a no brainer to me...
2723486, because they love coaching?

2723499, same reason most athletes dont retire at 27?

Posted by soulfunk, Wed Oct-14-20 11:48 AM
the option, because of the wear and tear on your body depending on the sport. It's a tougher transition as an athlete though because the player to broadcaster ratio is way higher.

But I get it - if you make it to that level it's because you love playing/coaching the game, so most will want to keep doing that.
2723576, JVG is kind of a cult figure character at coach,
Posted by Orbit_Established, Thu Oct-15-20 11:45 AM

2723578, wonder where he'll turn up next

2723580, Really unfortunate to run into the Warriors dynasty.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Oct-15-20 01:18 PM
Absolutely think they make the Finals at least once if that doesn't come together the way it does, and then this isn't happening. He's probably one of the three winningest GMs of the decade, too.

I'm not defending him, because they had a ripe opportunity this year with the Warriors out of the way, and they couldn't even get to the WCF, so the wheels were falling off with this current regime. Harden's turning 32-- they went all in to try to beat Golden State the last few years, but they couldn't get it done, and it's time to start fresh. I get it.

But he's gonna get a new job ASAP. Whatever you think of him as a GM or as a guy, they had a 60+% win percentage like eight or nine of the seasons during his tenure-- through different coaching tenures at that. A GM whose franchise wins at that high a rate for a decade is gonna be re-hired immediately.
2723581, Ty Lue to the Clippers, per Woj. 💣

Posted by cloak323, Fri Oct-16-20 12:13 AM
My thought too. The fact that they are both former players and Sam has been coaching longer, this seems like a gut punch that he comes in and goes directly to lead assistant. (has Chauncey been an assistant before?)
Maybe he is on his way somewhere else and Lue knew?
2723649, maybe he'll follow Doc to Philly

2723587, cool bron get to put another one of his old coaches out

if them niggas even make it to us lmao
2723588, Best of luck to him.
Posted by Numba_33, Thu Oct-15-20 01:43 PM
Wonder how much the roster will change.

A five year deal seems like a huge commitment given that both Kahwi and Paul George could both leave well before Lue's contract ends.
2723590, Lue wont be there past 3 years.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Oct-15-20 01:49 PM
IIRC Lue turned us down because we offered something like 3/18 and he wanted 4 years.

a buyout is nothing to Ballmer so he got no problem giving Lue whatever he wants.
2723612, good point
Posted by Cenario, Thu Oct-15-20 05:06 PM
2723598, if the big 2 opt out they could have a ton of cap space in 21 they could...
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Oct-15-20 02:25 PM
make a play for Giannis, him and AD in LA would be crazy...

2723592, Larry Drew on the staff, as well

2723601, Lue did a nice hands-off, Phil Jackson style coaching job in Cleveland
Posted by Vex_id, Thu Oct-15-20 03:05 PM
but he had the greatest mind in basketball QB'ing -- will be interesting to see how he fares with this squad, which still doesn't feature a natural leader on it.
2723606, so Phil didn't coach now?

Posted by RandomFact, Thu Oct-15-20 06:25 PM
has little to do with it.

rinse, repeat.

It's weird because after watching the Jordan doc it seemed like Phil was very hands on. The "zen master" stuff clearly doesn't tell the full story. Jordan and co just trusted the guy and gave in 100% so it seemed effortless.
2723624, Phil's got a whole offensive scheme associated with him.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Oct-15-20 06:44 PM
lol @ anyone who suggests he just managed egos and rolled the ball out.
2723671, Not the best argument. Tex Winters was the architect of the Triangle
Posted by Vex_id, Fri Oct-16-20 03:09 PM
The "hands-off" approach simply refers to one's ability to manage star personalities without *your* ego getting in the way, and empowering players by letting their personalities flourish without the need to institute an over-powering system to tame players.

Phil was a genius at this - and was famous for his laissez-faire approach to letting the players figure out puzzles on their own at times - which in the end reaped benefits because of its eventual effect of brewing supreme confidence.

2723625, Bullshit. Always some Jordan side talk with this guy.
Posted by allStah, Thu Oct-15-20 06:52 PM
Phil Jackson was a NBA nobody before he came to the bulls. He was a CBA guy!

Keep in mind, before Phil, Jordan took Stanley , Doug Collins to the playoffs, and won 50 plus games with Doug Collins.

Jerry Krause didn’t like the give the ball to Jordan and everybody get the hell out of the offense, so he brought in Tex Winters to work with Collins. Collins didn’t like any of those fuckers, and removed winters from the bench. That pissed Krause off, so he fired Collins and hired Jackson.

Again, Jordan didn’t like any of them because winters and Jackson were Krause’s guys.
They both came in as neophytes! Jordan wanted to keep Collins.

So it can be said that Jordan made them than the other way around, because Jordan’s playoff results were ascending before Phil.

Jordan didn’t have the liberty of getting coaches hired or telling the organization to get the players that he wanted. He had to work with rookie coaches and rookie players....and with a GM who hated him!

He has been an assistant for far too long to not even be considered for some of these
coaching openings.

Pelicans went with Stan Van Gundy, which we all know is just a short term solution. He can coach and understands the game, but isn’t the long term solution to get a team a championship.

So Donovan set one of his boys up? Cool. Nobody knew dudes name before today. If Thunder fans are happy it’s cool. That franchise was at its peak when it drafted 3 league mvps and will never be anywhere close to that level anytime soon. That’s why Donovan left.
2725136, nice little goalpost move, my dude...
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Nov-11-20 03:50 PM
Donovan didn't set up shit...he coached the OKC Blue for 5 years. Look...your point with the post is correct, but this wasn't it. Also, lol...I notice you didn't comment on the Rockets hiring a brotha...and I told you SVG would be coaching and JVG wouldn't.
2725145, Is that what I did? This is your team so obviously you know the details...
Posted by ThaTruth, Wed Nov-11-20 06:33 PM
of the situation and are way more invested than I am. It’s a rebuilding situation so it makes sense to go with an in-house guy.

I was happy to see Stephen Silas given a shot, he was the only non-championship black coach hired.

Bottom line is the bar is still way higher for a black coach to get hired and I’m not sure if you’re trying to argue against that.
