2719067, Steve Nash is the new Nets coach

lol aight lets see if this works. i know KD and Nash got tight when Nash was working w/ the Warriors.
2719068, i aint mad at it. could do wonders for kyrie.
Posted by Reeq, Thu Sep-03-20 08:52 AM
2719069, lmao the double take I just did
Posted by CherNic, Thu Sep-03-20 08:53 AM
Can't wait to see the dynamic with him and Kyrie
2719070, definitely didn't see that coming, I like Nash but a black former player...
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Sep-03-20 09:01 AM
is not walking into a job like that with almost no experience.

I wonder who his assistants will be. He was probably hoping Houston lost so D'Antoni would be fired lol. A first time head coach usually gets a strong former head coach as his lead assistant.
2719071, Jacque staying as lead (and best paid in the league) assistant
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Sep-03-20 09:04 AM
so i guess Nash is there to babysit KD/Kyrie
2719088, a Larry Bird/Rick Carlisle situation

2719130, Was waiting for this truth-minus-fact comment and of course you made it
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Thu Sep-03-20 02:49 PM
I didn't have to wait long. It's not even really truth minus fact, it's just false. Jason Kidd and Mark Jackson both went straight to NBA head coach jobs. Nash actually has more space between his playing career and coaching career than they did, and in that time he was a coach (special assistant with Dubs) and a GM (was Canadian National Team GM for seven years).

The hire makes perfect sense. Like you said, KD and Kyrie didn't come to play for Kenny Atkinson. Nash is KD's guy and he is exactly the type of mentor Kyrie can use as he tries to transition/take the next step.

2719144, did Kidd and Mark Jackson get teams with All-Star caliber players...
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Sep-03-20 04:17 PM
in their prime that were expected to contend right away?

No they got young talent they had to develop then get fired and watch a white coach come in and get most of the credit.
2719159, ^^^Why the FUCK is this so difficult to understand!?!?!?

>in their prime that were expected to contend right away?
>
>No they got young talent they had to develop then get fired
>and watch a white coach come in and get most of the credit.

When do black coaches get hired in this type of situation!?!?

Are we really this fucking dumb and naive?
2719244, The Nets had just won 49 games and had a lot of big names
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Fri Sep-04-20 05:23 PM
Now, the fact that those big names were washed or nearly washed is another story, but they were ambitious at the time and successful, too.

And if you want to say that the situation wasn't promising because the players were too old, well, what about Jackson? No, they hadn't won many games yet but they drafted Steph and Klay, they hired Bob Myers, etc. They were getting ambitious and he was their guy.

To say neither of those were good gigs is absurd. And to hoist up this Nets gig like he got hired to coach the Jordan Bulls is also bullshit. We have no idea how good KD will be next year and Kyrie is not exactly on the upswing. To me all of these are slightly above average gigs on the surface, just for different reasons.

I honestly don’t know, and don’t care to look it up.
2719075, I don't think he has any
Posted by CherNic, Thu Sep-03-20 09:13 AM
that was my next thought after Kyrie. Lil funny for the white guy with no experience to get a HC gig and the Black interim HC made lead asst or whatever the fuck the title is
2719083, Mmm hmm.

2719076, none. he was a consultant w/ the warriors when kd was there
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Sep-03-20 09:19 AM
2719131, He worked closely with KD in GS and he managed Team Canada
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Thu Sep-03-20 02:50 PM
And please, plenty of players his level have made the jump, including black players. This thread is just riddled with dumb comments.
2719140, not to teams with elite players that are expected to be contenders...

2719082, White privilege strikes again
Posted by Kira, Thu Sep-03-20 09:42 AM
Out of all the coaches available they hired the most inexperienced one.

Derek Fisher has more experience than Steve Nash. Ty Lue and Mike Brown are better coaches to say the least among coaches available.
2719098, Fisher had no experience when he got the Knicks gig
Posted by falafel stand pimpin, Thu Sep-03-20 10:43 AM
People bringing up experience like it's means something in today's NBA. All those guys you mentioned have burned bridges along the way. Nash has a golden reputation in the game of basketball. Bottom line, Kd/kyrie have a guy they respect.
2719087, I guess Kyrie still has beef with Lue maybe Griffin will bring him to NO
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Sep-03-20 09:56 AM
2719090, the players might need to "pause" again, I wonder if this was addressed...
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Sep-03-20 09:58 AM
in the talks with the owners.
2719094, Woj hit us with the AHT AHT lmaoooooooo
Posted by CherNic, Thu Sep-03-20 10:29 AM
https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1301525497990479873?s=20

There's a modern history of retired guards getting head coaching jobs without stints as assistant coaches, including Doc Rivers (Magic), Isiah Thomas (Pacers), Mark Jackson and Steve Kerr (Warriors) and Jason Kidd (Nets).

Idk if this makes it better but it's still sittin kinda funny
2719095, it doesnt really sit funny with me because its clearly KD's choice
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Sep-03-20 10:33 AM
the org can say what they want but they already got the prior deep relationship.
2719097, none of them took over teams with 2 All-Star players in their primes...
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Sep-03-20 10:42 AM
and expected to be contenders...

I'm thinking Brooklyn has to be no lower than 3rd in the east next year?
2719099, nah its finals or bust for them. regular season dont matter
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Sep-03-20 10:44 AM
2719110, You know those 2 All-Stars signed off on it.
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Thu Sep-03-20 12:05 PM
So it really doesn't matter.
2719116, RE: You know those 2 All-Stars signed off on it.
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Sep-03-20 12:23 PM
>So it really doesn't matter.

it does if the team doesn't live up to expectations, KD will probably play the good soldier but we all know Ky will check out in a minute lol
2719132, GS was a great job for both Jackson and Kerr.
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Thu Sep-03-20 02:51 PM
Particularly Kerr.

LMAO @ the goalpost moving in the face of evidence here. Nash is a two-time MVP and he leveled up based on prep, conditioning and court sense. Nobody was confusing him with Tom Chambers or Zion Williamson out there.
2719168, Jackson inherited a 20+ win team, asshole.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Thu Sep-03-20 07:17 PM
>Particularly Kerr.

Jackson in

>LMAO @ the goalpost moving in the face of evidence here. Nash

Wow, this is just racism

So other black guys didn't have "court sense" ?

2719245, oh fuck you, kidd was also superbly conditioned and smart
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Fri Sep-04-20 05:27 PM
you know that and now you're just trying to make a fucking scene.

the dubs were a 23-win team or something, that's true. the nets, when they hired kidd, were a 49-win team, which they aren't now. funny how you're overlooking that. and to consider the dubs a 23-win team and nothing else is disingenuous AF. they were very much on the upswing, even if no one knew just how high that swing would reach yet.

this refusal to recognize any sort of progress or leveling of the field until it's completely level is counterproductive. and of course you are "OK" with this because it's a perfectly legitimate hire and no different than the kidd hire in any way.

this topic is frustrating for sure but it's comical how it brings out irrational thoughts, just like years back when people accused the hornets of racism in their hires even though they hired a nearly uninterrupted string of black coaches.

2719105, Bobby Marks sprinkled some seasoning on it...

2719113, this is why I love Pat Riley and liked Jerry Krause
Posted by allStah, Thu Sep-03-20 12:15 PM
They don’t let players run the team. Lebron wanted Spo out of Miami, Pat said shut the fuck up and get your ass on the plane.

Jordan didn’t like Phil or Tex in the beginning, loved Doug Collins because he put the ball in his hands. Jerry was like FOH.

They are clearly trying to mimic Steve Kerr and GS, but the difference is that KD and Kyrie are temperamental.

This will not end well, because you got players running the team.
2719133, ehhhh, i don't think that would have worked here
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Thu Sep-03-20 02:54 PM
i feel bad for atkinson and hope he gets a good job but if they didn't make the move than KD and Kyrie would have moped through their entire contracts. you sign fragile MFs, you gotta react accordingly. this isn't lebron and shaq we are talking about, it's two of the most sensitive stars around. they made a good hire here. i am also happy they left mcmillan on the market because i want him in philly. but the ownership is so fucking dumb that they probably won't even pursue him.
2719142, yall bout to get Ty Lue
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Sep-03-20 04:02 PM
2719145, I was thinking he would end up in New Orleans
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Sep-03-20 04:18 PM
2719246, I'd be fine with that
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Fri Sep-04-20 05:29 PM
He is a very smart basketball guy, he sure as hell didn't stick in the league on talent.

Plus the endless and fierce torrent of stepover gifs and memes would make it all well worth it.
2719158, boston really might sweep these negros huh?
Posted by Reeq, Thu Sep-03-20 06:54 PM
2719171, wrong post but Nick Nurse is so much smarter than Dwane Casey
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Sep-03-20 07:18 PM

2724667, Should be a fun season in Brooklyn all around.
Posted by Numba_33, Fri Oct-30-20 11:26 AM
Gotta wonder; how short of a leash will Nash get since D'Antoni is on that bench?

As much as I think he's a joke of a head coach, D'Antoni does have 10+ years of legitimate head coaching experience.

Poor Jacque Vaughn has to suck up any discomfort and work for a dude with no head coaching experience that gets gifted Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving as players.
2724680, they won't "fire" Nash it'll be 1 of those "mutually agree to part ways"...
Posted by ThaTruth, Fri Oct-30-20 02:11 PM
they probably wanted Antoni(yes I intentionally leave the D off his name) all along
2724670, Oh I wonder which games it'll be their turn to head coach
Posted by Oak27, Fri Oct-30-20 12:09 PM
When do we expect Kyrie and KD to release the rotation?
2724682, It's a strong rotation for sure - Rays level depth

We'll see how Durant's health is but him and Kyrie in a D'Antoni-like system is gonna be fun.
2724694, Monster supporting cast.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Oct-30-20 07:35 PM
D'Antoni's always been best suited as an offensive coordinator type coach anyway, so that's a perfect fit. Buncha other good names too. If Durant and Kyrie are healthy, that team could be a looooot of fun.
2724763, Dantoni takes over next season?

and condition w his Peloton before the playoffs begin lol

But I have no idea how they expect to win a championship with the cohesion (or lackthereof) that they have.

2736046, I don’t.
Posted by Ryan M, Sun Apr-25-21 11:43 PM
But to your point - don’t understand making a big deal out of a small injuryso we’ll see.

BK has the best shot but they haven’t had their team healthy so who knows.
2736078, no way. he was always top 10 in MPG prior to this injury
Posted by bearfield, Mon Apr-26-21 05:05 PM
played/started 92% of available games through 2019-20 season and that's including an off 2011-12 season where he only played 62 games. outside of bron and pj tucker he was the most dependable starter in the league. i'm fairly certain that he was top 3 in the league in MPG this season before the injury. he's a gamer and a hooper and he wants to be on the court whenever possible. he's not faking or exaggerating this injury and i think it's actually way more serious than BKN are saying it is. i think it's more likely that he's not coming back until next season
2736081, You’re right , this is a man who goes hard on and off the court

they've played like 6 games all together. even the LeBron Heat team took a year to really gel
2736049, the playoffs will tell the tale, this team is considered Finals or bust...
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Apr-26-21 05:54 AM
anything less than that will be a failure
2736056, Pretty much

2736303, I forgot Spencer Dinwiddie is still on this team....
Posted by guru0509, Fri Apr-30-21 11:38 AM
he was playing at an extremely high level before the partial acl tear. I wonder what the Nets long term plans are for him..they were fielding trade offers before but IDK now
