I see this match going 3 sets with Osaka just getting by in this one. It will be a tough match for Gauff if Osaka has can hold serve for the entire match.

2702369, osaka is such a pro

i love her game. i saw coco gauff in person at the citi open in dc and she's very fit
couldn't believe i watching a 15-year old. when she gets some experience, she's
going to be hard to beat, seems like now is not her time yet.

Gauff should be top 10 in a couple of years. She is still a bit raw but she appears to have a fast learning curve. Her and Osaka are going to battle for years to come.

2702394, yeah, i agree
Posted by Crash Bandacoot, Sun Sep-01-19 09:26 AM
you can tell that gauff really wants to win. she's so young, hopefully in the future
she'll be able to to handle her emotions better.

2702443, The commentary during the Serena match was cringeworthy
Posted by bentagain, Tue Sep-03-19 12:55 PM
Admittedly, I don't watch a lot of tennis...if any at all TBH

Caught the CoCo vs Naomi match...and then the Serena vs Martic match

1 thing I can credit to OkaySports, is being able to see systemic 'cism in real time in our sports culture

I don't know how commentators, in 2019, aren't being reprimanded for descriptors like...

Bullying
Intimidating

...to describe Serena...

while describing the yt european player as

Creative
Imaginative

They literally reduced a black player vs a white player to...

physicality vs intelligence

Do better.

IRT CoCo, I found myself questioning the parents decision

That 2nd set was a complete mental breakdown

Some things should just naturally get corrected as she matures

she definitely has the skill

But it was difficult to watch her breakdown on such a huge stage, and a lot of people don't come back from that

What's wrong with being Junior champ 2 years in a row...?

Just thought to myself if the parents had considered such a disastrous result

...she also got washed in doubles...

Hope she can extract the relevant lessons from this tournament moving forward, and becomes the sensation everyone is projecting

But it felt like a huge gamble, that probably wasn't necessary...in hindsight.
2702450, eh she's clearly too good for junior ball.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Tue Sep-03-19 01:25 PM
there's nothing else to be done at that level but stagnate.
2702455, ...when the comparisons are Capriati and Hingis...
Posted by bentagain, Tue Sep-03-19 03:02 PM
do those cautionary tales outweigh...stagnation for a year or 2...

She's now affiliated with Mouratoglou, so she will get some professional experience off the court

Just thoughts that went through my head watching that match

Serena is the GOAT, there will not be another.
2702452, i think coco
Posted by Crash Bandacoot, Tue Sep-03-19 01:34 PM
wants to be number one now but, she needs to gain some experience. these
girls (women) will wax her a$$ because they have that experience. i also think that
in order for her to go to the next level, she needs a different coach. her dad has
been coaching her up to this point and definitely is a good start but, eventually she
probably will need someone to take her to the next tennis-level, and maturation
has to develop.

i'm not interested in listening to commentary about serena from that type,
especially mary carillo? i don't value their opinion because they wish they had as
much talent as serena, it's pathetic.
2702456, i think coco wants to be Serena right now
Posted by bentagain, Tue Sep-03-19 03:07 PM
Part of it, IMO

she's obviously going to be chasing Serena's legacy

I just don't think that's a reasonable expectation.

more unreasonable expectations...handle that like a grown ass woman.

?

That's the point, she's not

and she obviously wasn't ready for that moment, in both skill and maturity

what's the rush?

For every LeBron...there's a Lenny Cooke.
2702480, Why the doomsday scenario? She lost a match.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Wed Sep-04-19 12:54 PM

>what's the rush?

Did you say this about every other mature player who
also gets scraped deep in tournaments?

She's *obviously* ready to compete with the best.

>For every LeBron...there's a Lenny Cooke.

What does this have to do with Coco?

hosed 6-0 in the 2nd set

I'm assuming you didn't watch the match

She completely broke down in that 2nd set

She was rushing through it, and it looked like she just wanted to get it over with

...something that should naturally get corrected with more experience...

she'll hopefully learn to slow down a bit when pressed

...followed with the emotional on-court breakdown...

Admittedly, I don't watch a lot of tennis, but I can't think of another reference where that happened.
2702488, she's still a child man. kids cry after Ls sometimes.

but she absolutely dominated last night, i'm rooting for her
2702481, She needed a good & easy match. It's all about stamina at this pt.

Totally understandibly, her body breaking down by
the time she's in the Finals.

Let's see

a lot of hustle and fight. should be a good match saturday.
2702555, she dies for every ball
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Sep-06-19 08:38 AM
something i always wondered is how often players get down 3 or 4-1 in a set and just mail it in. that comeback in the 2nd last night was incredible. she's really good at quickly identifying when some shit isnt working and switching up too

i think she has the power and aggressiveness to trouble serena but she makes a lot of mistakes w/ how much she goes for it. i got serena winning but i like this girl.
2702677, Wow she fuckin did it

2702682, awesome, she deserves it
Posted by Crash Bandacoot, Sat Sep-07-19 06:25 PM
it's hard not to like her
2702875, Her power was too much plus she's prob the best at the finesse shots
Posted by Heinz, Tue Sep-10-19 11:03 AM
too right now. So having to back up on shot sand then her just dropping one on the next shot is so hard to compete with.

I still think Serena quit on her at the Rogers Cup cause she was getting washed that game. Young girl is just too good.

What other all-time great athlete has to put up with this
silly ass shit?

She's almost 38 and almost died during childbirth, dumbass.

She's *twice* her opponent's age. LMAO.

There's a reason women at that age and circumstance don't
aren't competitive at all. It's never been done before
Serena.

I still don't believe that injury shit. Are you able to have two complete thoughts where you feel like you are disabadoning your fan service? Wtf is wrong with you, stop letting your feelings for how amazing she is get in the way with logic. Her own team couldn't get the injury straight to the media. Then she's okay for the next two tourneys after what seems to be two major injuries that were enough to quit in the finals. We ain't brand new and she is still the goat but I don't believe there was any injury.

2702788, Rafa's win was awesome

Really good match, Medvedev fought hard and made him work for it. Missed a lot of football today watching it.

2702806, Thinking about it
Posted by go mack, Mon Sep-09-19 09:50 AM
Rafa should end up with more Grand Slams then Fed, probably gonna win another 3 French Opens before he's done and end with 15. What does he need to put him over Fed all time? He's at 4 US Opens now, one short of Fed. I think another Austrailian Open would look really good giving him 2 in all of them, something none of the other big 3 have. Another Wimbledon or 2 would be nice as well but not sure if that would be needed or not and doubt he does that anyways. I still think if he ends up with 22 titles with 15 French Opens most will still have Fed over him tho.
2702879, If he finishes with more than Fed, then he's above Fed
Posted by Deebot, Tue Sep-10-19 11:41 AM
I don't know how you'd argue differently in that scenario.

If they both finish at 20, then we nitpick things such as head to head, distribution of titles across surfaces, time spent as #1, Olympics, overall titles, etc.

If Nadal finishes at 19, then Fed is better.

Right now one of the equalizers is they both only have one title on their weakest surface. If Nadal can win another Aussie, that does wonders for his GOAT status.

Let's not forget Djok has time to surpass both, but depends on his motivation and fitness.

Djokovic is better than them now. It is possible that he wins another 2-3 majors next year.

I watched the last set, it was awesome. Medvedev is so damn sneaky. Like he looks like he's moving in water, and the ball jumps off of his racket.
