How are you feeling about ASU and Herm year 2?

True freshman Daniels being named the starter at QB was the right decision, he was a beast in HS and I think he will be a very good CFB QB but I don’t think ASU has the weapons on offense to help him out this year.
2702095, expecting a good build on the Manny era
Posted by HecticHavoc, Sat Aug-24-19 08:01 PM
really wish Harry was there this year to help out on the outside he will be missed

this year is impossible to predict but im glad to get more of Herms kids on campus over the wristband wearing Texan recruits. its a lot easier to snag top shelf California kids than Texas kids to Tempe and they did a damn fine job again this year. secondary is concerning tho, im not sure ASU can hang in many games this year.

Miami makes a stop then gives up an easy punt fake conversion

next play is a quick-screen against zone with lots of bad-tackling and 50+ TD

2702090, 90-yard TD drive? big-time shit

this kid Williams is showing something for Miami
2702091, agreed, he already looks more promising than Franks.

2702092, Jalon Jones looked like he had a little upside

2702093, this kid is impressive

supreme accuracy, decision making is calm and stellar.

Florida doing a great job of always dominating the game but somehow losing
2702094, 1st half:
Posted by will_5198, Sat Aug-24-19 07:57 PM
- despite the bad tackling at times, Florida only has 144 yards of offense; Gators' receivers are being locked up in man coverage and Franks is doing his usual game-manage, run-around, dump-off thing

- Williams is growing up and not making game-killing mistakes with the ball, but I'm sure he's going to see different/more aggressive looks in the second half after some quick study

- Miami's senior linebackers have been pretty disappointing

- turnovers
2702097, both offenses are pitiful
Posted by 3xKrazy, Sat Aug-24-19 08:27 PM
miami looks like they actually have a chance of getting better though
2702099, Florida shouldnt be ranked
Posted by HecticHavoc, Sat Aug-24-19 08:38 PM
they havent shown a single thing that could demonstrate an ability to complete a forward pass tonight
2702105, fantastic effort and tackling by Florida

Posted by 3xKrazy, Sat Aug-24-19 09:15 PM
it can't be that hard to beat out Franks
2702118, that's a good question. Depends who you talk to
Posted by dillinjah, Sat Aug-24-19 09:19 PM
>it can't be that hard to beat out Franks

I would think Mullin's offense is tailor made for Emory Jones, given his alleged skill set.

I've also heard rumors re: his work ethic, but nothing substantiated by anyone I trust

Posted by 3xKrazy, Sat Aug-24-19 09:42 PM
between osu and miami he hasn't thrown the ball once...if you're gonna take the ball from your qb why not give it to one of your best athletes?

2702127, yep

2702128, nah, this is fine
Posted by will_5198, Sat Aug-24-19 09:40 PM
we get a rarely-played rivalry game on Aug. 24. a lot of these penalties are just dumb stuff that both programs are known for. the quarterback play isn't great but one is a true freshman and the other isn't good.

and despite all that...it's a one-possession game at the end. not every game is great, no matter when it's played. and this is way better than seeing both teams "tune-up" against Savannah State (which even their fans only watch for 20 minutes).
2702131, I can’t unsee that 4th quarter
Posted by DJR, Sat Aug-24-19 09:51 PM
Horrific quality of play and a comedy of errors.

Works for me though. “The U” can eternally suck it.
2702134, I agree the 4th got bad

Florida did a really fantastic job trying to give the game away and Miami did their best not to take it

>Florida did a really fantastic job trying to give the game
>away and Miami did their best not to take it

but did it annoy anyone else watching these dudes taking pictures and popping shit on the sideline the whole game? like all of you dudes are TERRIBLE. you're not the '80s canes or whoever you're trying to emulate and you never will be. It just seems like they're trying soooo hard to be something that they aren't. that legacy is dead you can't get it back. especially not when you play like that.
2702166, Alonzo Highsmith said it best:

"Swag is watching Michael Irvin running routes with a 30-pound vest after practice in 100 percent humidity. Swag is running hills at Tropical Park after you've done all your strength work. Swag is the whole team showing up to run in combat boots on the beach."

"You don't get swag because of a haircut. Or because you pound your chest or because someone said you were a five-star. Swag is something that's earned."

"Everybody keeps looking for this swag thing. You know who has swag? Alabama and Clemson. It only comes from winning championships and beating the best."

2702130, wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement of franks by Mullin post-game
Posted by dillinjah, Sat Aug-24-19 09:51 PM
2702132, welp
Posted by will_5198, Sat Aug-24-19 09:53 PM
- Miami was opportunistic but was lucky to be +3 in turnover margin (did they not win every single scrum for a loose football?). that kept in the game.

- Williams showed something for Miami, but he extended plays in a bad way and will have to correct that moving forward. and after the first half, Florida pretty much figured him out. still, promising overall.

- these teams aren't that off, talent-wise, but Florida had the biggest mismatch of the game at defensive line (that poor freshman LT for Miami). Zuniga caused a lot of problems with his versatility at 3T and DE. Greenard had some juice. Moon looks like a threat again too.

- all that matters is the W, but Florida has the same problems as last year: a quarterback who puts together one or two drives and straddles mediocrity and awfulness for the rest of the game, plus not enough skill-position talent to bail him out.
2702135, there are 47 people at this Hawaii game
Posted by HecticHavoc, Sat Aug-24-19 10:09 PM
and they're beating Arizona 7-0 and driving!
2702142, not many fans of defense in the stands i hope
Posted by 3xKrazy, Sat Aug-24-19 11:01 PM
this works though after enduring that florida game
2702143, Remember when Khalil Tate was good! Feels like that was 5 years ago
Posted by calij81, Sat Aug-24-19 11:01 PM
Noel Mazzone and Kevin Sumlin haven’t been good for Tate at all.

Also, remember when Sumlin was a good coach? That feels like it was a decade ago now. I thought Sumlin was going to do well at Arizona and in the PAC 12. I seem to be wrong about that.
2702147, arizona still prob gonna win the south
Posted by 3xKrazy, Sun Aug-25-19 12:51 AM
lol
2702148, No they won’t
Posted by calij81, Sun Aug-25-19 01:43 AM
It will probably be Utah, USC or UCLA in that order.
2702157, was joking...mostly
Posted by 3xKrazy, Sun Aug-25-19 04:34 PM
zona will be their usual wildly inconsistent selves

i see no chance ucla wins the division. utah is the easy choice.
2702158, Yeah I figured as much
Posted by calij81, Sun Aug-25-19 04:36 PM
Arizona should be good on offense but that defense is a mess.

I wouldn’t be surprised to UCLA make a big jump and improvement this season. They played a lot of young guys last season and their freshman QB was improving throughout the year.

Utah is the easy and smart pick for the south.
2702172, what is with this Utah train
Posted by HecticHavoc, Sun Aug-25-19 08:24 PM
i dont see it. Utah cant score, and their defense is built to stop the run.

im going with USC & ASU as the South contenders
2702179, I think it's for a lack of better options
Posted by 3xKrazy, Mon Aug-26-19 08:56 AM
they return their qb and running back and they're a PAC program that actually cares about defense soooooo...lets hype em up.

2702230, i cant really argue against this lol
Posted by HecticHavoc, Tue Aug-27-19 09:45 AM
true, they are returning talent skill guys and have the best defense. ive been watching a ton of Pac12 Net that are replaying a lot of the Utah games - the ASU provided-beatdown is still fresh in my mind and when Utah doesnt have a lead they do not win games (edit: this is the most Magic Johnson shit i've ever said but I just meant they cant crawl back into games if they get down early like a lot of other teams can). Huntley passed for 88 yards against the Devils and their secondary was, uh, bad.

the game is in Utah this year so it'll be extremely tough for ASU to win there.
2702231, I agree with 3x and that is why Utah is currently the favorite to win P12S
Posted by calij81, Tue Aug-27-19 11:33 AM
They return their QB and have a solid coaching staff. Utah is a dfensive minded team that plays in a conference not known for defense.

USC and UCLA have a ton of question marks, ASU lost their top WR and playmaker to the NFL, ASU lost its veteran QB to graduation and is not turning to a true freshman QB. Arizona doesn’t look good and Colorado is in rebuild mode.
2702232, the Holy War should show us something

USC boggles my mind. i always give them the benefit of the doubt to bounce back.

i kinda masked my excitement for ASU above but Jayden Daniels isnt even a downgrade to Manny Wilkins. probably the best QB prospect i've ever seen at ASU. Manny had valuable vet leadership and awareness/experience on his side but this Daniels kids by all accounts is the real deal Holyfield. plus Eno Benjamin is the best RB in the Pac12. THE. BEST.

Utah has BYU and ASU has Mich St as its only challenging outta conference so I think if either of those P12 teams lose those games it'll be a rough road.
2702234, I agree that Daniels is more physically talented
Posted by calij81, Tue Aug-27-19 12:40 PM
And has more potential and upside than Manny.

However, Daniels is still an inexperienced freshman QB and is going to make freshman QB mistakes that Manny probably wouldn’t have made. Plus Daniels won’t have Harry at WR to help bail him out of bad throws or reads.

I’m just not seeing ASU a serious threat to win the PAC 12 south this season with a freshman QB.
2702270, fuck it why not...if the kid is as good as people are saying

2702299, It’s only game 1 of the season but this looks about right
Posted by calij81, Thu Aug-29-19 10:55 PM
Cincinnati is a solid opponent and did beat UCLA last season but UCLA looked bad tonight. Offense looked inept and defense couldn’t really stop Cincinnati.

Could be a long season for UCLA.

2702266, OL Trey Smith and DL Aubrey Solomon cleared for Tennessee
Posted by will_5198, Wed Aug-28-19 08:16 PM
Smith has been dealing with career-threatening blood clots and Solomon has been in limbo since transferring from Michigan.

Smith is one of the best guards in the country and would be a huge addition for a Vols o-line that was probably bottom three in P5 last year. Solomon is unknown goods for the most part, but Tennessee lost basically their entire starting d-line from 2018 and need all the help they can get.

Georgia State you are on notice!
2702267, bama LB Dylan Moses out for the year (knee)
Posted by will_5198, Wed Aug-28-19 08:17 PM

2702268, Going to our opener in Reno Friday night
Posted by calminvasion, Thu Aug-29-19 12:23 AM
First road game I've been to in over a decade. I think I've been to at least one live cfb game for at least the last 7 years, none have been Purdue though.

Spending the minimum amount of time, get in Friday afternoon, then driving back to SF, with a detour in Tahoe early Saturday morning.

Better win. Oline will be our Achilles heel all year Sadly.

Trying to find one more marquee matchup to attend this year in a stadium I hadn't been, but schedule is crazy. We talked about maybe ND @ GA - one look at StubHub and we deaded that idea quickly. Insane prices.
2702269, you're looking too soon though. prices always drop.

We stay reloading on D, especially defensive backfield, and we don't a noodle-armed bum (got bless Browning he helped UW on a national stage...but...he's still a noodle armed bum) under center.

Eason can sling it. If Browning could have slung (is that the right tense) it at all we'd have a title during his "era."

Guarantano threw for 311 yards, 2 TDs, pick
Ellington threw 11/24 139 yards 2 TDs

Tennesse's leading rusher had 48 yards which im sure explains the rest

not watching the game i'd assume Tra Barnett was the game MVP with 21 carries for 95 yards and a TD.

Tennesse just fell asleep in the 2nd and 3rd qtr

Posted by will_5198, Sat Aug-31-19 09:26 PM
they are finally free of the Browning shackles; if Eason can perform under pressure those skill position players are going to eat

defense is a little green PT-wise, but Jimmy Lake is a HC-in-waiting and usually reloads

helps that Oregon has to go to Washington this year

The bottom half of that league sucks.
2702376, it has for a while, but CFP is the perception
Posted by will_5198, Sat Aug-31-19 09:23 PM
SEC built the narrative a long time ago and bama has carried the torch in the playoffs. Big 12 + Pac-12 being a combined 1-5 in the playoffs hurts them more.

Herbert should have done better but no help from the skill positions is tough even if your OL is nasty.

That aside, I'm a big skeptic of Cristobal after watching him be taken completely off guard by that injury sit for a play rule. Bozo.
Also fuck "I never have a plan for the 2nd half" Marcus Arroyo.

does that mean NFL teams are going to go after Riley like they did Kingsbury? Even if Riley signed that big extension last year?
2702420, they've already been looking at him
Posted by will_5198, Mon Sep-02-19 03:23 PM
Riley has a great situation in Norman, but I feel like he'll want to see what he can do in the NFL at some point

NFL rules with downfield blocking would eliminate some of his stuff, but he thinks up just stupid, defense-breaking plays (that are simple enough to be executed)

can Cinci make it a game for 3 quarters vs Ohio State? no.

aTm, to my utter shocking surprise, is 17.5 point dogs! WOW.

curious how Nebraska fares in Colorado

BYU Tennessee should be solid stress for both teams

game of the week for me is aTm Clemson but LSU/Texas is a legit game

HOGS VS OLE MISS!!!!! BATTLE OF THE INEPT.

Cal @ Washington a very nice Pac12 sleeper game.

Stanford gets to crush USC's dreams

Northern Arizona might beat Arizona.
2702459, Michigan - Army has my butthole real real tight
Posted by cgonz00cc, Tue Sep-03-19 04:58 PM
there is a layer of depth here as it also is related to the coaching search im pretty sure we (Georgia Tech) botched
2702464, i had this game circled all offseason
Posted by 3xKrazy, Tue Sep-03-19 08:12 PM
but army looked putrid against freakin RICE so I've pretty much abandoned all hope on this one.

and I don't think the ol' 'army didn't want to show their hand before mich' stuff really applies to an offense like army where you pretty much know exactly what they're going to do anyway.

I didnt see any of the mich game but I heard it wasn't that great of a performance.
2702463, That clemson spread is tempting. I'd take the points

A&M will lose, but I think by 14-17 points
2702465, epic weekend

>can Cinci make it a game for 3 quarters vs Ohio State? no.

if the OSU team we saw in the first quarter against FAU then no. anything else then Cincy can make this a game. Fickell wants this one BAD. and you know the 73 ohio kids on the cincy roster want it too.

>aTm, to my utter shocking surprise, is 17.5 point dogs! WOW.

just give me a competitive game please.

>BYU Tennessee should be solid stress for both teams

BYU +3.5?? Will, thoughts on this??

much more looking forward to texas/lsu

looking forward to getting my first look at eason

>Stanford gets to crush USC's dreams

man this game gonna be UGLY. with a backup true frosh qb helton will probably go even more conservative than shaw.

and btw, does losing JT for the year give helton a reprieve for this season? gives admin a reason to not have to buy out his contract after this season.

i checked the box score when it was 28-0 and Fields had an incredible stat line so i expected them to be a complete juggernaut. they probably just let off the brakes. i agree those Ohio kids on Cinci's team are going to bring it.

>BYU +3.5?? Will, thoughts on this??

that makes sense to me. did you think BYU would be favored or it'd be a bigger spread?

>much more looking forward to texas/lsu

interesting. i want to see Clemson challenged for the first time in a calendar year

>looking forward to getting my first look at eason

yeah same here. weird to see a Washington QB throw deep dimes

Helton did some weird shit last week. right after that freshman QB came in he went for it on 4th in his own territory
I think that one QB who went to the transfer portal feels like an idiot, he came in to the ASU game i went to last year and did decent for his first ever game. the kid starting this week is a 3 star from AZ and only had offers from Vandy and i think Iowa St or something?

No idea really, I'm just curious as to Will's thoughts. I didn't watch tenn last week. honestly, it's prob been years since i sat down and watched a tenn game from start to finish.

>
>Helton did some weird shit last week. right after that
>freshman QB came in he went for it on 4th in his own

I watched it and it was fucking hilarious. combine the 4th and 1 call along with the fact that he was running plays with 20 sec left on the play clock can only lead me to assume that he was trying to cover the spread there. I had fresno so that was a nervous few min for me.

these qb transfers are taking a big risk in a lot of situations and as a result perhaps we see the musical chairs act slow down a bit when kids realize the grass may not always be greener on the other side. tate martell could've been the OSU backup right now and one injury away from being the man. instead he's playing wr at miami and his qb career is looking like its donzo.
2702503, BYU is probably the biggest game in three years

which sort of tells you everything about where Tennessee is as a program right now. lose that one, and Pruitt has a *hard* time selling his vision to the fanbase and even his own team.

I'm a strong believer in a three-year minimum, especially for a school as damaged as UT is right now, but the optics of an 0-2 start against Georgia State and BYU are unavoidably bad.

I watched most of the game last week and the OL and DL are humongous issues. they had issues all game against a FCS team. the defensive communication busts were inexcusable for Pruitt himself and the new DC Derrick Ansley, who is getting paid NFL money. I have been a Guarantano fan but he did not elevate himself at all, which is concerning for the most experienced leader of the offense.

more than schematics, though, this is just a mentally fragile team. when Georgia State punched back, they were all deer in the headlights. you always think the worst when you keep living it, year after year.
