Molly Qerim Says ESPN 'Had My Back' After LaVar Ball Comments
EXCLUSIVE

Molly Qerim is breaking her silence after the LaVar Ball incident on "First Take" -- telling TMZ Sports she's grateful for the way ESPN execs "had my back" after the way LaVar talked to her on-air.

"ESPN was really supportive," Qerim told us Tuesday morning in NYC ... "All the executives had my back. Much appreciated."

The network quickly condemned Ball's comments to Qerim on Monday as "inappropriate" -- when he told her, "You can switch gears with me anytime."

We asked Molly if LaVar (or anyone in the Ball family) had reached out to apologize -- and she told us, "I haven't heard from anybody, but to be honest with you I shut my phone off after work."

As for her how famous NBA star husband, Jalen Rose, handled the situation -- Molly says, "I think Jalen would have just liked if would have apologized to me publicly."

Does Molly think ESPN should ban LaVar from coming back on "First Take" or any other ESPN show? We asked that too ... check out the clip.

For his part, LaVar is adamant the comments were NOT intended to be sexual in nature -- and he insists he meant no disrespect.
2699559, Joe Namath should be locked up.

you made him relevant. The whole thing is trash and the only ones to blame...besides Lavar for being a clown...are ESPN execs for putting him on tv like he has a fucking thing interesting to say.

Yeah, I saw a yahoo headline yesterday and was thinking a bit overblown. I think someone in media made it an issue and reached out to her probably tho. Idk, whatever. We'd all like her to switch our gears but just most people are keeping that inside our heads. lol And Jalen ain't gonna care unless he's actually groping her on set or says much worse I don't blame him. Also, agree keep this fool off the networks.

This is dead air season for sports networks

You didn't question why he's on First Take...at all...?
BBB dissolved
The brothers aren't going to make it to the NBA
...and Zo just got traded into irrelevance after stumbling through 2 seasons...

What could LaVar Ball possibly have to say that's interesting in that context?

So ESPN wheels him out...dumb dumbs tune in...feign offense at some benign comment...

and here we are.

But Jalen is the problem...c'mon

could said the EXACT same thing and it would’ve been chuckled off. He literally repeated her question back to her and his tone and her over the top, unnecessary and unprofessional reaction and reply made it way more than it should’ve been.

Like I said above now that Lonzo is no longer a Laker I couldn’t give a rat’s ass about his dad but this a joke.

And also like I said above Jalen didn’t actually say anything his wife commented on what she thought he should say. And I bet we won’t hear from Jalen because if he does say anything he’d be setting himself because stuff way worse than this goes on regularly in sports commentary and we all know it.

How is this a violation? This sounds like another instance of the media framing black men and as sexually deviant predatory monsters.

Lavar Ball is a lot of things to a lot of people. Most importantly he is happily married with three sons. Making a transition to a new subject is far from hitting on Molly. We're talking about an interview on first take broadcast around the world.

Lavar shouldn't said it in the first place. Just say ok or sure Molly and keep it moving. I hope everyone upset about Lavar puts the same pressure on Luke Walton. Luke is in a very bad situation right now and no one is talking about it.

but he should have cleaned it up. Optics weren't right and any man with half a brainwave understands the context of social constructs have changed in the last 5-8yrs.

I wouldn't ever say "You can _________ with me anytime" to any woman not my wife if I wasn't actually trying to flirt (which, I just wouldn't do). No matter what word goes in the blank. lol

LaVar was probably trying to be 'cute' because it was a woman but it doesn't deserve a news cycle. Maybe a call from ESPN like "that's Jalen's wife, chill on that" or maybe the same from Jalen or her for that matter.

2699694, If he says "Yeah, that came out wrong. My bad/apologies"...

instead of that extra-dramatic, unnecessary and unprofessional reaction to make it out to be more than what it was.

Rachel Nichols or Michele Beadle have conversations way more "edgy" than that with actual players and retired players and its no big deal.

I had never heard of Molly Qerim before yesterday and I feel like she's trying to make a name for herself.

Even down to the whole: "I think Jalen would have just liked if (LaVar) would have apologized to me publicly."

Well what did he actually say? Did you all discuss it?

He knows who he is and what he says gets amplified. Poor choice of words, bad optics flirting with another mans wife on TV and an illustrated lack of awareness not to clean it up before it became a news story.

This is all LaVar's fault, no matter how other people are clout chasing off it. You're pointing the finger the wrong way.

She was asked by TMZ if Jalen Rose had any comments, and she responded that she thought that Jalen would preferred that Lavar apologize publicly.

How is that a lie?

• Her colleagues (1 of them seated next to Lavar) and Employer agreed with that assessment and backed her.
• You don't know either of them, yet you claim that she lied about her private convo with her own husband, while he's been backing her up the entire time.

• you haven't heard ONE thing from Jalen (although SHE certainly has).

Its his wife. I'm pretty sure she knows him better than you.

• you called her a liar, then retracted on a "technicality"

All of this because you think Lavar Ball obnoxiously harassing the woman interviewing him on national tv is no big deal and being blown out of proportion.

I have yet to hear a direct quote from Jalen about the incident which is weird because he usually has something to say about everything. Why would be be silent now? If you google Jalen Rose news outside of quotes from his wife its strictly him talking about NBA free agency and the draft. He seems to want no part of this incident. None of his retired player commentator buddies have said a peep either.

In the initial story she said Ball hadn't reached out to apologize, yet at the same time she said she "turned off her phone and went home" yet somehow woke up the next morning talking to TMZ Sports of all people.

She gave a quote of what she THOUGHT her husband's opinion would be and presented it as fact.

Put your agendas aside for a minute.

Put your Lavar hate aside for minute.

Put your ThaTruth hate aside for a minute.

Talk to anybody that you know personally outside of the boards that watches sports regularly and show them that interview and ask them if they though LaVar's comment constituted sexual harassment.

If this was someone that was a lot more likable in the media it wouldn't even be a story.

That has everything to do with it because she made of point of saying what she "thought" he would say yet we actually having heard anything from him which is somewhat unusual for him.

Also she made a point of saying nobody from LaVar's camp had contacted her to apologize while saying that she turned off her phone so they couldn't have if they wanted to. Yet somehow she's talking to TMZ Sports. Maybe they stalked her outside her house. Why didn't they do the same for Jalen?
2699876, you just answered your own question...

>I have yet to hear a direct quote from Jalen about the
>incident which is weird because he usually has something to
>say about everything. Why would be be silent now?

Exactly.

We all know Jalen is highly opinionated. We know he doesn't take kindly to people putting words in his mouth. Jalen knows what she told TMZ and he hasn't refuted it. If we use your logic, then its safe to presume that he stands by his wife's statement.

Jalen Rose doesn't owe you or anyone else any attention on this matter.

>If you
>google Jalen Rose news outside of quotes from his wife its
>strictly him talking about NBA free agency and the draft. He
>seems to want no part of this incident. None of his retired
>player commentator buddies have said a peep either.

Stephen A Smith was sitting right next to him and made an immediate comment.

>In the initial story she said Ball hadn't reached out to
>apologize, yet at the same time she said she "turned off her
>phone and went home" yet somehow woke up the next morning
>talking to TMZ Sports of all people.

She didn't turn off her phone to avoid Ball. She turned it off because it immediately started blowing up after that interview. It shouldn't be too difficult to realize how crazy that can become when you're a celebrity, but its real. TMZ questioned her as she was leaving the studio (not by phone). If Ball wanted to reach her to apologize, there's standard protocol/procedure in place to do that (through her agency/publicist/attorney/etc).

There is nothing wrong with the way she reacted or how she handled this situation. However, there is something wrong with anyone that thinks its okay to behave the way Ball did in any professional setting (journalism, sports, or otherwise). Regardless of your opinion, that kind of inappropriate behavior is no longer tolerated.

Whether you believe it or not, sexual harassment is a serious problem. You might not take it seriously, but the greater majority of this country does. As such, we've evolved to include a code of conduct for professional settings at all times.

unless your wife is in a line of work where she regular interviews male sports personalities on live tv she is not going to be in that situation on the regular in the first place.

People trying to pretend that world is the same as everyday life are being ridiculous.

There’s a reason you haven’t heard Jalen or anybody else speak publicly on this because if you’re going to make big deal out of that situation it sets up a slippery slope to where male athletes will not want to do interviews with female reporters at all.

Jalen probably wants to distance himself as far as possible from this because I’m sure somebody will dig up a video from 20 years ago when he made a questionable comment to a female reporter.

He said he stands with his wife (ride or die). His wife felt it was inappropriate. He said "..you don't get to tell her how to feel..."

That means he agrees that Lavar's comment was inappropriate and should apologize.

>Instead of addressing this on one of his multiple professional

He stated that he's actually been playing phone tag with Lavar and would like to actually have that convo live on his show (J&J). Since that hasn't happened yet, he chose to address the backlash on IG Live so that his words couldn't be twisted or taken out of context.

So Jalen actually set out to turn a negative situation into quite possibly a positive one, where everyone involved could actually grow and prosper from it.

2700446, It really was a weak ass reason to ban Lavar

I think he has said far worse and acted worse in interviews with women.

2700449, Don’t care the reason, glad he’s gone

This “banned from ESPN” stuff is funny. He had no reason to be there in the first place. He ain’t nobody! He can sit his attention whore busybody helicopter parent clown ass all the way down.

With his kid in N.O. instead of LA, his 15 seconds was pretty much up anyway.
2700459, I don’t like the “Black man can’t control his hormones” angle

2700461, that's not the angle. it's "Lavar play too damn much" and blew back

2700465, Please. There's no reason to give that dude any press as it is.

These dummies shouldn't have put his empty calorie, Kardashian caliber "content" ass on air to begin with.

He overstepped and got booted from a platform he had no business being given to begin with.

Too bad, so sad, who gives a fuck. He's a big mouth attention whore who has to soak up Zo's shine somewhere else.

what a travesty.
