We got them right where we want them.

Or, very likely, this could be a very short post.

Either way, I'd prefer not to roll over during Game 5.

KD is going to practice. So, yeah.

And fuck Drake.

NBA Finals: Kevin Durant's injury absence causing 'confusion and angst' among Warriors teammates, per report

Durant's status remains a major question mark, and his teammates are reportedly getting more irritated by the day

by Michael Kaskey-Blomain 7 hrs ago • 2 min read

Kevin Durant's extended absence from the 2019 NBA Finals is having a negative impact on the Golden State Warriors, apparently both on and off the court.

According to a report from Sam Amick of The Athletic, Durant's calf injury is causing some angst within the Warriors organization, as the team is not sure when -- or if -- Durant will be able to return to in-game action during the Finals.

From The Athletic:

"At the very least, Durant's absence that began back on May 8 is causing a mixture of confusion and angst among several of his teammates that simply can't be helpful to their overall cause. Sources say there was a very real hope that Durant would be able to play in Game 4, to push through in much the same way that Thompson, Cousins, Iguodala and Looney have done of late. When that didn't happen, and when they saw their season compromised more than ever without him after they'd grown hopeful of his return after seeing him on the court, the irritation grew in large part because they simply didn't understand why he wasn't there.

Warriors officials aren't running from the reality that there's frustration among some players, but they're also quick to point out that trainer Rick Celebrini – not Durant – is making this call. And until Celebrini gives Durant the go-ahead, his long and painful stretch of absences will extend into this pivotal Warriors summer where his free agency future remains unclear. What's more, two sources insist that the Warriors have believed for quite some time that Game 5 was the earliest time in which he would likely return."

Whether or not Durant returns for Game 5 of the Finals on Monday night in Toronto remains to be seen, but based on recent reports, it doesn't look good. Following the Warriors' Game 4 loss, ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported that Durant struggled during practice, and just doesn't appear ready to play.

Even if Durant is ultimately cleared to play in Game 5, one would have to wonder about the level of rust that he would be dealing with after being sidelined for over a month. But, Durant at even 60 or 70 percent would provide a big boost to the Warriors, who have looked lost without him at times against the Raptors.

Since signing with the Warriors in 2016, many have referred to Durant as a "luxury" for a team that had already won a title without him. While his return remains a major question mark, one thing has become clear during Durant's absence: He's much closer to a necessity than a luxury for the Warriors.
2698401, This finals prolly better for durant legacy than if he never

FOH with the hot takes

I hope he plays...they lose...and KD leaves

Can’t think of any superstar that has been treated worse than KD’s time in GSW

Put some respek on that man’s name.
2698455, and people wonder why he hates the fucking media.

>Can’t think of any superstar that has been treated worse
>than KD’s time in GSW

LOL. Yea I can't think of any other superstar who was universally villainized, had hate letters written to him by owners, and was boo'd at every arena to where entire radio/tv personalities had whole programs dedicated to denigrating and hating on legacy.

Never seen that before.

Of course, this is just a fraction of the hate that LBJ was getting. But that's because Kang carried the cross to pave way for his little brothers. KD followed in his footsteps, and will do so yet again when he leaves GS unceremoniously. But unlike Kang, he won't be headed to the most historic championship in league history (via the greatest reunion moment in sports history) - he'll just be going somewhere cool to ball out and ride out his last chapter comfortably.

But that's what fathers and big brothers do: make life easier for those who come after them.

If they don’t, we could be saying ‘who in the hell left the gate open’ a week from now.

The spins and narratives are already written either way tho. The Warriors are lucky and we’re never all that good is the most hilarious, but it’s out there. Gotta counter all of those ESPN ‘is this the best team ever yawl!?’ stuff from early May. My pops stays rolling over.
2698435, Dubs really have no business being down, at all.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Mon Jun-10-19 06:14 AM

They are better at basketball than the Raptors, even
sans Durant.

If Durant is back at 50%, this should be an easy
3 in a row for the Dubs.

Why are we acting like this Toronto team shoudn't have
lost to the Sixers and didn't get smacked by the Bucks in
games 1 & 2?

2698464, it's an L for him if Warriors lose, whether or not he plays, IMO
Posted by Kungset, Mon Jun-10-19 12:59 PM
it's a W for him with the "do the Warriors need him?" question. but that was always secondary to KD's main motivation to be viewed as the best player in the NBA. Kawhi closes this out, and the media/fans will jump on the chance to put him above KD. his stint with the Warriors may actually knock him down a peg, which is hilarious.

I was really looking forward to his match-up with Kawhi to see who's the real top dog.

I still think Toronto takes it tonight bc the Warriors biggest issue has been defense and Durant is probably still too hurt to make a difference on that side of the ball.
2698492, Just placed a bet on Warriors +400 to win it all.

every report on the sunday practice said that it didn't go well and that he barely even spent any time on the floor. nothing full speed. nothing with contact.

he rushed back, because of the stakes involved. if it was january he wouldn't be playing. he wasn't fully healed, and now he's reaggravated the injury.

he shouldn't have been out there.

Not saying he wasn’t, but that wasn’t much different than any other injured teammate would’ve done in the playoffs. They media just hyped it because it was Kevin Durant.

Obviously KD wanted to finish the job with this team this season regardless of what he does this offseason but he doesn’t want to put that future in jeopardy too.

We’ve seen from the fake twitter accounts and other stuff that he’s sensitive to what people think about him.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/26815513/kd-disputes-idea-warriors-better-him

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Golden State Warriors superstar Kevin Durant said he is "doing better every day" but acknowledged that he isn't sure when he'll be able to return as he continues to recover from a strained right calf.

"Speaking to reporters for the first time since he suffered the injury on May 8, Durant also addressed the idea that the team plays better without him -- "that's not facts" -- and the way some still don't see him as part of the Warriors' collective group."

"As a player, I think about that -- I'm just like, that's not true. That's not facts when it comes from a basketball perspective. The competitive side of me -- I also like to talk basketball as well -- so if you're going to say something like that, I'm going to engage in it. So it's all fun, it's all cool, but I know the real."

With GSW, he's probably earned himself a nice check. And I believe Kerr recently said that Looney is a "foundational piece" for them. The GM has a problem on his hands.

One thing I’ll say is that I’m happy that we get one last game in Oakland.

But yeah, still feel awful for KD.

KD and the team knew there was a risk that he could re-injure his calf. No one thought the achilles would be at risk.

The whole thing sucks, and we can look back at it with 20/20 vision and say he shouldn't have been out there. Been Klay, Cosuins, and Iggy have all been playing hurt knowing that they could reaggravate any of their previous injury. I can't blame KD for wanting to follow suit as soon as he possibly could.

I'm not a doctor, and they obviously haven't done that MRI to determine the extent of the injury, but I gotta think it'll be a while. Then again, Cousins came back in less than a year. So I imagine, absolute best case scenario, he opts in to his second year (and the sign him to an extension in the off-season) and he's back by the play-offs. But he could just sit out for the entire season and I wouldn't be mad at him.
2698775, prolly. Achilles rupture is usually a year. it would suck to come off

Sad that one has to knock one person just to boost another. Why can't they both be great at what they do? Steph and KD are asked to do different things. Maybe I’m watching with biased goggles on but I see Klay balling and saving the dubs as much as if not more than Curry. And he’s playing adult defense regularly. And I don’t see nearly as many ‘get benched’ turnovers.

Also, Kyle Lowry’s a ho and whatever their idiot coach said during that horrible timeout must’ve shaken him to his core. He missed two good looks. The first one? Dude was La fitness pickup game open. I flipped over a chair when he hit the side of the backboard on that last shot.

Posted by bentagain, Wed Jun-12-19 06:18 AM
Made in healthcare resources and imaging modalities

An mri will tell you where the calf strain/tear is, its severity and the potential risk of rupturing the Achilles

This happened after no activity for 5 weeks

I’m going to assume that was never a calf strain.
2698824, Lol what?
Posted by Cenario, Wed Jun-12-19 12:08 PM
2698947, They’re not related.
Posted by bentagain, Thu Jun-13-19 02:57 PM
You’re following the logic that because the calf muscles attach to bone via the Achilles...

...an injury to the calf compromises the Achilles...

But it’s actually the opposite

A calf strain/tear actually releaves some of the tension on the tendon because you’re not exerting the full force on it

The organization stated the worse case scenario they hypothesized was straining or tearing the calf further

Achilles was never considered

Think about it

2698731, Why are the Warriors to blame?
Posted by Creole, Tue Jun-11-19 11:37 AM
Maybe KD knew the risks and still decided to play. Maybe what Myers said about the staff working with KD for four weeks and then clearing him after watching him practice and attend shootarounds is accurate. Again, maybe KD knew the risks and still decided to play.

We're very quick to blame without recognizing that man has his own mind and did what he wanted to do regardless of what caused him to do it. We piss and moan about personal accountability, in other instances, but are quick to blame someone else when a grown-up makes their own decision.

I'm seeing it here and in the media. It's weird to blame someone else for what that grown man decided to do. The fact that he put it on the line, after presumably knowing the risks, is admirable and damned respectable.

He, literally, put it all on the line to help his team win. He was very well-compensated prior this injury and will continue to be so as a result of this. I'm wishing the brother brother great health and peace of mind. And I'm hopeful that the folks who cleared him to play will be free from any guilt about what's transpired.
2698736, That aint it chief.....
Posted by blueeclipse, Tue Jun-11-19 12:23 PM
The Warriors are absolutely to blame for this. Myers and Kerr can come out all they want and try to run that game about the doctors and the "testing" and what not but he didn't even go through a full practice. This isn't the type of injury you don't practice with and then try to go full speed.

I told my buddy that if he comes back without that calf fully healed he will tear his Achilles almost 100% because of how long he is. Once there is no give in that muscle the only thing that can happen is that Achilles rupture with that much torque on it.

It's not like you can just tell the guy to go half speed or try and control his minutes hoping he will just spot up and not go hard. Once he was in the flow of the game that was a wrap. He was going to try to take someone off the dribble.

This is a travesty all around for Golden State.

Agendas aside. Hot takes. Whatever. Legacy. They are a loaded team even without him. You don't take the risk. It's not worth it. Even if you lose the Finals you don't do it. He may never be the same player again. We don't know. It's a damn shame.
2698744, I feel you. However, does Durant share any blame or accountability?
Posted by Creole, Tue Jun-11-19 01:16 PM
Was he forced to play or did he choose to play?

I dunno. That's where I'm at with it.

I just wish the brother a speedy recovery and to be in great overall health again much sooner than later.
2698739, It’s definitely their fault.

Posted by Creole, Tue Jun-11-19 01:18 PM
Tough decision and repercussions for everyone involved.

I just don't think it's all on the organization. Kawhi sat a whole year because he chose to despite what the Spurs' staff said.

Either way... I hope the dude comes back better than ever.
2698751, Managements fault. Even if KD wanted to play

KD and Rich Kleiman are tactical as fuck.

if they thought KD couldn't play, he wouldn't have.

they obviously thought the risk/reward ratio was good enough.

KD and Rich (especially Rich) aren't gonna let the Warriors BULLY KD into playing.

The team’s unofficial policy has long been “Wait until the guy is healthy and then sit him one or two more games.” Even during the play offs

Shoot, after getting hurt during the Rockets series last season, Iggy sat for almost the rest of the play offs, long after he’d been medically “cleared” to play.
2698959, they have NO response for why Klay was sat

Posted by mrhood75, Thu Jun-13-19 09:09 AM
They like idea that KD told the team that he wanted to play and Bob Myers and Lacob is responded “Duh! What took you so long!” Even if it has no basis in reality.

The Warriors worked closely with KD’s personal doctor, who he’d consulted to get a second opinion.

They even worked with KD’s business partner/manager/agent, who’s job is to put KD first.

All the medical professionals, including the ones that KD was personally paying, believed the worst thing that could happen was that he’d retweak his calf.

Now, of course, everyone was wrong. And hindsight 20/20, everyone is saying that the definitely should have kept him out. But they all decided at the time that it was worth the risk.

2698743, Absolutely.....
Posted by blueeclipse, Tue Jun-11-19 12:32 PM
I'm not the biggest fan of the guy but no one wanted to see this. The Warriors organization should be ashamed of themselves for this shit. They should have made sure he didn't play until he showed beyond a shadow of a doubt that he could go hard. The Finals is too intense of a situation to try and ease a player like that back into. The stakes are too high. You are asking for exactly what happened if you put him out there like that.
2698779, According to that, he coulda ruptured an achillies in practice
Posted by Cenario, Tue Jun-11-19 08:40 PM
2698783, Cmon man....
Posted by blueeclipse, Tue Jun-11-19 11:48 PM
It doesn't sound like he pushed it far enough to even know beforehand. Game speed, especially in a Finals game is much different than a practice......especially if he's aware where his body is at that point. If he took some dribble moves to see where it's at and felt a tug then probably shoulda shut it down. I've had an achilles injury. I have one that is slightly damaged one now and trust me......you know when you take a wrong step to pick your foot up IMMEDIATELY.
2698825, If he tested it in practice by going hard
Posted by Cenario, Wed Jun-12-19 12:11 PM
He would have ruptured it in practice.
2698852, Not necessarily
Posted by blueeclipse, Wed Jun-12-19 05:14 PM
The intensity is different....your body knows when it's really on and when it's for play play. He could have eased into it and eventually tried to go half speed and then ramp up but there's no reason he would have had to do anything to rupture it in practice and if anyone feels like that's the case then why the hell would you go hard the first time on the floor in the fuckin game from 0-100.
2698903, This is what you said
Posted by Cenario, Thu Jun-13-19 06:40 AM
It doesn't sound like he pushed it far enough to even know beforehand

You are assuming that he went harder in the game than in practice. And that he shoulda tested it our properly in practice. Meaning what? Go as hard as he did during the gsme as in practice. How else can you properly test it?

Which means it would be the ssme likelihood of rupture in game or practice.

Yet push everyone else to come back early i guess

they sat him for 1 game the "protect his health" so he could come back and play the rest of the series, they didn't give a fuck about his free agency future or his unhappiness. At the end it the day its a business to pretend otherwise is comical lol.
2698802, No one is saying it’s not a business
Posted by Amritsar, Wed Jun-12-19 09:28 AM
But it’s an interesting argument that GS is this evil organization who rushes players back from injury too soon

When just a few games ago they sat a miserable looking Klay against his will

You typing “protect his health” in quotes felt good im sure. But doesn’t take away from facts unfortunately
2698810, We’re talking about KD. Fuck you keep bringing up Klay for

2698813, My argument is pretty clear fam.

Some are saying we rushed back KD. But the track record of this team and players recovering from injury suggests otherwise

Most recent example of that is Klay. Who they sat against his will

I’m an equal opportunity dynasty hater. Bulls, Pats, Lakers, GS...

But that doesn’t mean I’m not rational when it comes to KD coming back too early.

GS shoulda never let that man on the court. He may never return to being the player he once was over selfishness by this franchise.

2698814, Fair enough.
Posted by Amritsar, Wed Jun-12-19 10:14 AM
GS does get some of the blame here. But I also think there’s a larger argument to be made about sports culture here

gut it out and be a man etc
2698858, the Warriors shouldn't have cleared him
Posted by Stadiq, Wed Jun-12-19 06:03 PM
End of story, man.

There is no reason they should have cleared him.

If you want to blame sports culture first? Okay. Go for it.

But the GS staff needs to protect their player from that culture then.

Especially when the organization already has 3 chips. The fuck they risking KD's entire future for a 4th?

The best case scenario here for GS is that it was KD who pushed to come back on his own, and they didn't stop him.

Even that scenario makes the organization look bad.

And the fact that they sat Klay for one game doesn't erase the fact that they should have sat KD for more.

You can be a GS fan and question Meyer, Kerr, etc.

And to Legs point, you can be rational here and recognize this is on GS...and not be a "hater"

2698816, Great point but I feel it's different in the finals
Posted by Cocobrotha2, Wed Jun-12-19 10:52 AM
And every player's situation is different.

First, it's the finals... players are going to be willing to take crazy risks at this point to win a championship. I.T. WILLINGLY jeopardized the rest of his career for the conference finals. What do you think most players would do if they're within 4 wins of a ring?

The coaches and GMs are probably pushing people to play back in Jan and Feb, but now? The players will push themselves (which IS dangerous bc nobody is focused on the players long term health anymore).

Also, KD's pockets are straight and he's already a future HOF-er. He can risk losing a year to injury and a diminished career from here and not affect any of that. Worst case, he's not going to reach some all-time records and his argument for "GOAT" status will be weaker. Compared to winning another ring with this group and further etching his name into league history, the risk seemed reasonable (for him).

If Looney had had the same injury, he'd have been watching from home bc he's still at the beginning of his career and has alot left to earn.
2698834, FOH, lol...

nobody wants to lose a year+ of their career in their prime, its not like KD doesn't already have 2 rings and 2 Finals MVP trophies.

2698923, The media, fans and his desire did him in
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jun-13-19 11:22 AM

How many players on his level do you know that would be content with 2 when a 3rd was in reach and they could do something to help get it?

He didn't want to miss a year but he felt it was worth the risk to get another ring. A bad bet on his part but many other players would do the same in his position.

2698900, why did they ice his lower leg during the game?
Posted by Reeq, Thu Jun-13-19 02:23 AM
ive never seen anyone ice *during* a game (that planned on playing again).

i thought you were supposed to keep things warm and active while playing (heating pad, exercise bike, etc).

icing makes things contract and tighten right?

2698924, I know Russy does it for his knees
Posted by bentagain, Thu Jun-13-19 11:23 AM
Yes, cold contracts

But, given a knee injury, the related swelling could result in discomfort and pain...along with structural issues given too much swelling

The ice is to resolve the swelling...but to your point

If KD was cleared, why is his leg swelling after a couple of minutes

Also, there's this gem from Mamba

2698937, LOL @ "the Warriors made Durant play!"
Posted by COOLEHMAGAZINE, Thu Jun-13-19 01:27 PM

Everyone involved got excited by being so close and thought he was good to go.

He got hurt instead. Now everyone involved is sad.

If he doesn't get hurt, this is like a million stories we all grew up listening to about heroic moments in Finals/Superbowls/whatever-the-fuck.

It's sports.

Lots of real shady shit goes on with injuries in professional sports but I'm not seeing it here.
2698940, The chances of injury were much higher than an epic Hollywood ending
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jun-13-19 01:42 PM
Smh at folks acting like this is normal.

It’s not. We’ve seen players get hurt and play thru it in the same game but coming back after sitting for only 4 weeks after a horrible workout that most folks said didn’t go well.

Nah... This ain’t some “people get hurt in sports” type situation.

A whole season gone over a dumb ass desperate decision.
2698945, right, Willis Reed was probably making like $35k a year lol

2698964, This doesn't change how I look at Durant....
Posted by blueeclipse, Thu Jun-13-19 05:48 PM
I thought going to Golden State was a ho decision and I still do. The guy is an incredible basketball player. Top 10.

But to go to this level of desperation.....both by going to Golden State and then playing through what we can see now is an injury he had no business trying to play through and that the Warriors should have stopped him from playing through.....is wack.

This is as bad as Grant Hill playing on a broken ankle and losing 3 plus seasons of his career to show Detroit fans that he was "tough". Then he left anyway and was decent enough to do the sign and trade that eventually helped Detroit win a title. It was a terrible look for the Pistons to let him play too. Teams will do this shit more times than not.

Durant opened his Players Tribune piece when he signed there as "My New Challenge". Yeah these guys have almost no self awareness. He was surprised that even after 2 Finals MVPs and titles that people were putting an asterisk on the shit. That's probably not fair but it is what it is. The look is terrible. You either accept it and make peace or not.

The fact that he feels that he probably has to leave Golden State rather than stay to show he can lead his "own" team goes against every reason for going there in the first place.

If winning titles is enough then just own it and stay.

This new era of dudes are so shook.
2698968, He has NEVER said this, it’s all random speculation...
Posted by ThaTruth, Thu Jun-13-19 06:19 PM

2698969, So, as for the game tonight...
Posted by mrhood75, Thu Jun-13-19 06:27 PM
Again, having a much harder time being into it after the last game, but I am pretty bummed that this is the final game in Oracle. Had hoped that final game here would end with a Warriors championship, but... yeah.

I really hope they find a way to extend this. It would really suck for the Warriors to lose all three home games in the Finals.

If the Warriors are going to have any chance, both the Splash Bros. gotta be huge, again. And then they gotta come up with another 30 or so points from either one player or a tandem of a few. So I don't know if that means Cousins needs a huge game, or Iggy has to hit 4 to 5 three and Jerebko kicks in another 15, but the remaining offense has to come from somewhere.

Just one game at a time.
2698970, paul pierce picked raps to win tonight. dubs basically a lock now lol.

you could say the same with the Warriors.

both of their wins were won by what... less than 6 points?

and losing both KD (for a year), and Klay (in an elimination game, after he dropped 30). with Looney all the way fucked up.... and those motherfuckers were only down 1 with 0.9 seconds on the clock for the game?

Lucky Horseshoe is only buried. It will be unearthed, as everyone stays at a discount... the bench gets rebuilt and I'll be back to cussing them out again like they're the '90s Cowboys.

you can cancel free agency this year. GS is keeping everyone, possibly at a discount. we'll get to see if they're the Spurs or not.

2699198, Am I the only one annoyed by the Nick Nurse narrative?
Posted by The Real, Fri Jun-14-19 09:08 AM
Many talking heads are saying that he was brought in and got it done; and thus it was a smart decision. So...

- Trading to get a top 5 player didn't have anything to do with it?
- LeBron leaving to go to the west didn't have anything to do with it?

I actually thought down the stretch of games Nurse didn't do a very good job. Some of his late game offensive sets were odd.

Props to the Raptors but I think we need to pump the breaks.

2699216, He made a couple moves that he can take credit for
Posted by Cocobrotha2, Fri Jun-14-19 10:20 AM
Moving to a zone when it was just Curry out there at times did slow the Warriors down for stretches. It's a move that I think many coaches would be too proud to make.

Also, pushing the pace against the Warriors (which has generally been the thing NOT to do against them during tis stretch) also paid dividends since they lacked their usual firepower. It probably worked best in Game 4 when Curry looked gassed just two nights after putting up 47.

Nurse isn't a genius but you can at least attribute some of their success to decisions he made. He damn sure would've taken the blame for some of those momentum-robbing timeouts if they'd eventually lost the series.

And yeah, I would've liked to see Casey coach these players without having to go through LeBron. I'm somewhat re-assured by the fact another black man made the move but of course that's no guarantee Ujiri didn't think that Nurse's coaching was colder just because he was white.
2699252, Get the fuck out of here.
Posted by Heinz, Fri Jun-14-19 01:39 PM
Casey was a great coach. But Nurse adjusts on the fly and Casey didn't. He was amazing this year. The city still loved Casey but he made bad decisions when it mattered. And as much as Nurse was consistently great he made a bad choice in game 5 with that time out and we let him know that. FOH with that shit. This board always picking and choosing when coaching matters for whatever the agenda is. SMH. If its superstars then coaching doesnt matter. If its underachievers then coaching matters. smh

2699262, so was Nick Nurse going to go through Lebron without Kawhi, yes or no?

2699258, Doesn’t that make it 3 straight rookie HC Chip Ws?
Posted by bentagain, Fri Jun-14-19 02:13 PM
Kerr, Lue and Nurse...?

IMO, it’s more about the message it sends to the team

I’m confident Casey would have done just as well

I thought Nurse blew game 5 by benching Siakim and leaving Lowry, Green and Fred on the floor in the 4th

Never understood coaches trying to make examples/send a message to players in the offs...

But anyway, yeah, everything you pointed out is valid

I don’t see his impact being more than the context.
2699269, Yes. You are wrong.
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Jun-14-19 03:12 PM
Sure he fucked up game 5 but dude built the wall vs the Greek.

He pushed the pace vs the Warriors.

He played a janky D in 2 games and it caused GS fits. He killed most of GS’s runs with time outs that other coaches don’t seem to use for some reason when GS gets hot.

Sure, he has Kawhi but he didn’t fuck it up. Pretty sure no one on here had the Raptors winning it all when the playoffs started.

2699270, not really...
Posted by ThaTruth, Fri Jun-14-19 03:17 PM

>Sure, he has Kawhi but he didn’t fuck it up. Pretty sure no
>one on here had the Raptors winning it all when the playoffs
>started.

they were the best team for most of the regular season especially when you factor in that Kawhi only played in like 60 games.

And if the Warriors are 100% they still destroyed in the Finals.
2699283, Did you pick them to win it all when the playoffs started?
