|
2696046, Nah, I’d bet he’s tired of being clean when much of his comp. isn’t Posted by DJR, Mon May-13-19 03:15 PM
Gotta wonder if at his age he’s had enough of all the recruiting stuff.
Can’t imagine I’d want to recruit, run a program, and deal with kids and parents and their bullshit at his age.

2695987, wwnt from JV HS coaching to the NBA. Posted by Frank Longo, Mon May-13-19 09:58 AM
A testament to his skill.
Going to be very interesting to see who Michigan pulls as their next coach.
|
2695988, never been an assistant coach at any level. Posted by Ceej, Mon May-13-19 09:59 AM

?
|
2696028, lol, please that would be great Posted by calminvasion, Mon May-13-19 01:43 PM
Only wrinkle is that Domino might mean Shrewsbury takes that Butler gig after just getting him back from Celtics. Although he's gonna get that Butler job, this might be a year or two too soon
|
2696041, i think so, and i dont care what happened at Butler last year Posted by cgonz00cc, Mon May-13-19 02:51 PM
AS LONG AS they keep Yaklich around. if that can happen thats my #1 preference.
|
2695992, I see it as an itch he wanted to scratch, he's 66 and has coached at... Posted by ThaTruth, Mon May-13-19 10:20 AM
every level so why not give the NBA a shot, if it doesn't work out he can always go back to college
|
2696032, Biancardi said Beilein expressed being tired of college. Posted by Frank Longo, Mon May-13-19 02:17 PM
The roster turnover was making his job difficult, the new rules will likely only make that even *more* difficult, and he likely doesn't see the FBI investigation actually making any changes to how the recruiting game is run any time soon. So fuck it. Move to the NBA.
|
2696034, RE: Biancardi said Beilein expressed being tired of college. Posted by ThaTruth, Mon May-13-19 02:25 PM
>The roster turnover was making his job difficult, the new >rules will likely only make that even *more* difficult, and he >likely doesn't see the FBI investigation actually making any >changes to how the recruiting game is run any time soon. So >fuck it. Move to the NBA.
yeah if the NBA doesn't workout I could see him finishing out at some small conference school and occasionally upsetting some of the big dogs
|
2696044, I'm honestly not even convinced that's true. Posted by Frank Longo, Mon May-13-19 03:11 PM
He's old at this point-- he'll be paid through age 71. I'd bet the NBA is his last stop before retirement.
|
2696071, RE: I'm honestly not even convinced that's true. Posted by ThaTruth, Mon May-13-19 07:13 PM
>He's old at this point-- he'll be paid through age 71. I'd >bet the NBA is his last stop before retirement.
Its hard for a lot of these guys to stop, Jim Calhoun is still going at 77. If they're still relatively healthy a lot of these guys just can't sit down and do nothing.
|
2696063, Boooooo fucking hooooooo. Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Mon May-13-19 05:28 PM
The turnover.
Fuck outta my face.

2696122, LOL Posted by Ceej, Tue May-14-19 10:44 AM
I missed that quote....anywhere
|
2696273, lol, hey, I'm right there with you Posted by Frank Longo, Wed May-15-19 11:19 AM
but for schools that *aren't* blue bloods, if you lose a projected starter or two unexpectedly, that definitely has a big impact on what you're able to accomplish.
|
2696297, and these arent 5* players Posted by cgonz00cc, Wed May-15-19 01:14 PM
when you recruit a top 15 player youre already planning for that
when Burke, Hardaway, Stauskas, DJ Wilson, Wagner, Poole, and Brazdeikis are all leaving after 2 years or less...theres not a contingency plan.
Trey Burke was a nobody, Hardaway was a name, Wilson was a nobody, Mo was a nobody, Poole was a nobody...no one saw any of that coming and its not the most gratifying measure of success for a coach.
I read something the other day that struck me. He actually has a better opportunity to grow a team over time in the NBA than he does in college. If thats what he wants, then thats what he wants. He won more with his players than any other coach in America could have, and that's a fuckin fact. He was also THE most ethical participant in a scummy endeavor, and thats also a fuckin fact. Without the bag he was never gonna get the players that schools WITH the bag reel in constantly. When the players he does get dont even stay long enough to reach the team potential...I get it. Im selfishly bummed, and Im mildly annoyed at his destination, but talking about him "crying" when hes the only one doing it ethically at that level...is wack.
Especially when UK is closing in on 5 years of consecutive top 3 classes and ZERO Final 4s over that time. Underachieving AND dirty is not solid ground to stand on and talk about other coaches and what they think of the game.

2696074, The Athletic seemed to sum it up: Posted by will_5198, Mon May-13-19 07:22 PM
"To think that Beilein — a man who worked his way up from a junior varsity coaching position at Newfane High School, to Erie Community College, to Nazareth College, to Le Moyne College, to Canisius College, to the University of Richmond, to West Virginia University, to the University of Michigan, to the Cleveland Cavaliers — wouldn’t jump at the next challenge is, simply, to ignore a personal history of self-belief. Beilein wants to win (or not lose) and test his X’s against the best O’s. That’s it.
As Beilein told me that day last summer: “People don’t know me. They really don’t know me. People think they peg me, but they really don’t know me. But that’s OK.”
At the end of the day, this is a chance for John Beilein to take his two-guard offense to the NBA and use it against the greatest players on earth. Forty-three years of coaching have all led up to this."
|
2696036, Cavs fans should be happy they didnt hire Izzo a few years back Posted by guru0509, Mon May-13-19 02:30 PM
I think he'll do well in the NBA
I'm relieved bc he was probably going to kick Holtmann's ass for as long as he was there lol

2696037, Nate Oats must be kicking himself for taking the Bama job Posted by DJR, Mon May-13-19 02:39 PM
right about now.
|
2696043, Michigan could pony up the buyout if they wanted. Posted by Frank Longo, Mon May-13-19 03:09 PM
It's a pretty hefty buyout-- I think it's 8 mil, IIRC-- but Oats would 100% be worth the investment imo, and I guarantee they could raise the money if they felt he was their guy. He's the absolute real deal, and I don't think Michigan after the success Beilein has built should try to go cheap on their next coach.
|
2696051, good points and I agree Posted by DJR, Mon May-13-19 03:31 PM
There aren’t many other good candidates this time of year, and I agree that Oats is legit.
Michigan was mostly irrelevant for a solid decade or even a little more before Beilein, which really shouldn’t happen. They gotta get the right guy and keep it going.
|
2696060, well that happened mostly because of malfeasance the 10 yrs prior Posted by cgonz00cc, Mon May-13-19 05:00 PM

2696053, will Juwan Howard be a candidate? Posted by DJR, Mon May-13-19 03:33 PM
He’s been an NBA assistant for a bit now.

pretty sure we're all trying to do the same within our own respective careers
|
2697096, there was a lot to the initial reaction Posted by cgonz00cc, Sat May-25-19 12:51 PM
the whole team almost died in a plane crash 2 years ago, and last year he had open heart surgery
plus after the Pistons flirtation last year he himself intimated strongly (without making definitive statements, in fairness) that this would be his last job
and while i was kinda stunned, i never like...resented him or anything. after amaker righted the culture, Beilein restored the excellence in a way that shouldnt have really worked in modern times. shock shouldnt be taken for lack of gratitude or appreciation. we just assumed he would retire here.
|
2696296, Sure would be a shame if they took Billy Donovan from OKC Posted by B9, Wed May-15-19 01:08 PM

Reports were he was rumored for NBA jobs. He countered on Twitter that he's not listening to anyone who may be calling. Probably a smart move by Howard tbh.
