doesn't mean it's not going to happen.

magic leaving takes it from 100% to somewhat less certain, but it's still like 98%

Posted by Ryan M, Tue Apr-09-19 09:53 PM
He was gonna fire Luke.
He loves Jeannie (but didn’t TELL her he was gonna quit).
The going got tough and it wasn’t fun.
He couldn’t tweet about Wade.

That about cover it?

Okay...he sucked, but Pelinka hasn’t shown a damn thing and maybe...just maybe....Jeannie is the worst?
2692867, Pelinka has shown more than a few things
Posted by LA2Philly, Tue Apr-09-19 10:45 PM
He's the reason we have the opportunity to sign Lebron and another max agent, got Bullock for peanuts, traded Nance and JC for cap space + 1st, got Josh Hart out of an expiring Lou Williams contract. He's made some really good moves since he came on.
2692868, The way he resigned sums up most of his tenure
Posted by LA2Philly, Tue Apr-09-19 10:46 PM
Flying by the seat of his pants on a lot of things, most notably all the AD leaks. He's a tremendous closer and advisor so I hope he goes back to that role.
2692885, I could almost see him going back to TV
Posted by Marauder21, Wed Apr-10-19 08:14 AM
Except this *should* sink his credibility, particularly if he has to talk about the Lakers. But it's not like he'd be the only person at ESPN or Turner you could say that about.
2692869, Well, I don't envy whoever takes his place
Posted by mrhood75, Tue Apr-09-19 11:17 PM
They're a mess.

I imagine it's going to be someone who Buss will have to offer a lot of power/autonomy to.

Magic is a great businessman and ambassador to the game, but hasn't ever done well in coaching/management roles. Hey, happens to literally some of the other best who have ever played.
2692870, dude quit like a millennial lol.
Posted by Reeq, Wed Apr-10-19 12:11 AM

he's still getting James Dolan paychecks as I type this out and I think he will next season as well.

Am I correct in that assumption folks?
2692912, I think that $24m is now paid off with the conclusion of this season.
Posted by Creole, Wed Apr-10-19 10:19 AM
It would have been paid during the '17-'18 season and then, finally, the '18 - '19 season. That's how I interpreted the news when it dropped.

Pat Riley to LA and he brings Spoelstra with him. Spoelstra coaches for a few then once LeBron is done moves to the front office.

It's just a matter of time before Riley hands over the keys to the car to Battier.

and not the end of the season to he could completely fulfill his duties in his role? Pretty abrupt to have to leave the franchise holding the bag with what seems like no clear warning his was leaving. Also, didn't the Lakers have a game before he made his announcement?

He referred to lives and livelihood being in his hands and not liking the thought of changing them in, what I think, is bad way.
2692961, I don't think he was scared, he fires people all the time.

he didn't want to do it with the lakers + everything else, and he decided...why should I do these things I don't want to do?

That can all be someone else's problem.

You can say the same thing to me.

We can all say it to each other.

It wouldn't add a thing to the discussion of whether Magic was good at his, but it sure would be snarky!

Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Thu Apr-11-19 04:36 PM
and the Cs are still well ahead of the Lake Show, plus the Kyrie deal was dumping a guy with dead legs and a pick that turned out to be mediocre. they can sustain that kind of loss and still be fine. i mean fuck the celtics and all, but let's not act like this was a major people in glass houses moment here.
2693056, This whole situation is just...weird.
Posted by Kira, Thu Apr-11-19 04:31 PM
All of the statements below fall under allegedly......

Bron asked Magic to get DeAndre Jordan at the trade deadline and that failed so Magic got rid of Zubac at Bron's behest. The AD situation forced Jeannie to take more control of the situation. She's mad as fuck at Lebron.

Magic realized he didn't have any power and would get the blame for whatever happened so he quit.

Now the Lakers find themselves at a crossroads.

Bron wants:

Juwan Howard as Pres with Lue or Mark Jackson as coach.
AD
Kemba
Terrence Ross

Jeannie wants:

Kurt Rambis as President with Linda as her second choice.
Kawhi Leonard as a free agent.

She's not allowing Bron to have any say in these decisions due to the perception Bron is running the show.

It's not unintentional that Jeannie's playboy past surfaced in the past few days...

So basically an aging player is struggling to get his way in the Lakers organization.

2693100, With an alleged and assumed power struggle between JB & LBJ
Posted by Creole, Fri Apr-12-19 09:44 AM
it would make sense for JB to wield her power and influence by ridding the Lakers of Lebron.

However, if she won't do that, they need to find some sort of compromise.

* No to Juwan or Rambis as Team Pres.
* Yes to Mark Jackson or Ty Lue being the coach.
* As for trading for AD, that's a ship that's sailed. The arrival of Ingram's blood clotting issue has essentially put a nail in the coffin. So, rid the roster of KCP, Lance, and either Javale or Tyson. Find a away to bring in a couple more shooters.
* Sign & Trade for Kemba so we can get rid of Ball but keep Rajon.
* Let the Kawhi idea go because he ain't coming there to deal with none of that.

They've gotta do something after, first, chillin on the BS power struggle because neither of them can be the winner in it.
2693098, sigh

Posted by tariqhu, Tue Oct-13-20 12:36 PM
he sometimes talks in hyperbole, which is good for the media, but not good for the role he was last in with the lakers. he's just not a good basketball exec.
2723528, It's one of his biggest
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Wed Oct-14-20 05:52 PM
His coaching career is probably #1 with his talk show #2.

For as either disinterested or inept in the job as he was, he did get LeBron to sign. (no small feat, given how poor the Lakers had played in the years up to his signing) And from a public image standpoint, his presence helped legitimized Jeanie as the governor to some degree.

What struck me as odd about Magic's role is that he HAD to have know the level of commitment and hours it takes to be PBO. Like, why did he take the job if he had no interest in grinding at his desk?

Maybe he did know and wasn't 100% committed but went along because he didn't want to disappoint Jeanie and disrespect the wishes of Jerry Buss? I don't know.

But it worked out in the end. I think the main reason his image took the hit is the scorched earth he left behind and now that the team won that sting he created will fade.
2723537, He signed Lebron point blank period.
