2649012, Right? Millenials are awesome, actually Posted by Walleye, Tue Apr-03-18 09:57 AM
Stripped of context, it's a super nice thing to say about somebody:
"This human person wants to understand why they're doing something instead of mindlessly bumbling into the future, as though he wants to have some kind of agency over his life and career instead of having his athletic talent wrung out of him like a dirty dishcloth for as long as he can help some twice-divorced, middle-aged coach to stay in team-branded Under Armour polos."

2649014, unless there was more... Posted by Dstl1, Tue Apr-03-18 10:07 AM
I didn't see it as criticism.
In an interview Sunday with Sports Illustrated, Mora stood by his opinion that Darnold is a better fit for the Browns. He added that he believes Rosen "is the No. 1 quarterback in the draft" and a "franchise-changer," but said that the team that drafts him will need to challenge him.
"He needs to be challenged intellectually so he doesn't get bored. He's a millennial. He wants to know why. Millennials, once they know why, they're good. Josh has a lot of interests in life. If you can hold his concentration level and focus only on football for a few years, he will set the world on fire. He has so much ability, and he's a really good kid," Mora told Sports Illustrated.
|
2649019, ^^^ seen Posted by bentagain, Tue Apr-03-18 10:44 AM
My interpretation
Darnold is a football player.
Rosen isn't as committed to football
Which I think is a key point of differentiation
Especially in the CTE era
Every year we see guys walk away after a couple of years in the league...and rightfully so if it's for health reasons
But it sounds like Mora is concerned about his long term desire to play football.

i guess you didn't see the WaPo bullshit about dating jews.
it's a small thing, but taking shots at Jews for being too intellectual is using a lazy, tired, anti-semitic trope, especially when compared to Darnold's "blue-collar, gritty attitude".

didn't see it, but I’m guessing it doesn’t have anything to do with this either.
>it's a small thing, but taking shots at Jews for being too >intellectual is using a lazy, tired, anti-semitic trope, >especially when compared to Darnold's "blue-collar, gritty >attitude".
Being too intellectual isn't really taking a shot at a QB. The shot he's taking at Rosen is suggesting that he's not fully dedicated to football.
>it's not big, i'm not mad, but it is what it is and y'all >should see it for what it is.
you seemed kinda mad, which would make sense since you thought it was antisemitic. but there isn't really any indication of that. it's just jim mora being an asshole, not an antisemite.

I saw it. And no, it has nothing to do with this.
>Being too intellectual isn't really taking a shot at a QB. The >shot he's taking at Rosen is suggesting that he's not fully >dedicated to football.
Like Dstl, I'm not even sure if Mora's comments were intended to be negative. Mora is just too stupid to understand how his comments could be misconstrued and misinterpreted.
As mentioned, Mora went to bat for Rosen extra hard during the season when reporters suggested that he wasn't tough. To turn around and take shots at Rosen now wouldn't make a whole lot of sense.
>>it's not big, i'm not mad, but it is what it is and y'all >>should see it for what it is. > >you seemed kinda mad, which would make sense since you thought >it was antisemitic. but there isn't really any indication of >that. it's just jim mora being an asshole, not an antisemite.

2649165, on this board, i shouldn't have to explain this like this Posted by thejerseytornado, Wed Apr-04-18 07:46 AM
>>>i guess you didn't see the WaPo bullshit about dating >jews. >> >>didn't see it, but I’m guessing it doesn’t have anything >>to do with this either. > >I saw it. And no, it has nothing to do with this.
they both use lazy, tired anti-semitic tropes that didn't get called out as such until Jews had to point it out as such. and i saw them the same day.
>Like Dstl, I'm not even sure if Mora's comments were intended >to be negative. Mora is just too stupid to understand how his >comments could be misconstrued and misinterpreted.
intention isn't the definition here. it's the use of a stereotype. I don't think mora intended it. i do think it is an anti-semitic stereotype to talk about a jewish person like that while contrasting it with a blue collar, gritty white christian who can go to Cleveland but the Jewish guy should go to a NY team. The "millenial" thing doesn't even make sense as ceej pointed out.
>As mentioned, Mora went to bat for Rosen extra hard during the >season when reporters suggested that he wasn't tough. To turn >around and take shots at Rosen now wouldn't make a whole lot >of sense.
and yet, he used an anti-semitic trope. It's similar to when Joe Biden praised Obama for being "articulate." Obama is articulate--he's one of the most articulate people in the history of the United States. It's also an anti-black trope to call a particular black person articulate. Dumb fucking move Biden. Dumb (but not as bad) fucking move Mora.
>>it was antisemitic. but there isn't really any indication of >>that. it's just jim mora being an asshole, not an >antisemite.
why defend him using a trope? He used the trope. he probably didn't even realize he was doing so, i don't care. but he did and it's shitty of him and we shouldn't let those tropes slide right by because there's an alternative explanation. Nah, don't use those tropes.
>If 10 other people had cosigned on his faux outrage he >wouldn't be walking it back now.
to me, it's bizarre people are trying to defend Jim Mora like this. Why? why not be like "yeah, calling a jewish athlete not blue-collar and saying he should go to New York instead of Cleveland is a kinda bad look" I know he said NY because they're picks #2 and #3 in the draft. don't be dense--it's about it being a bad look, not about his belief that we jews have horns or are (((globalists))). but that's out there, so be a little smarter about not accidentally or intentionally sounding like one of those shitheads.
but no. you cape for Jim fucking Mora? ok...

2649611, you don't have to explain anything Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Fri Apr-06-18 03:36 PM

>>>>i guess you didn't see the WaPo bullshit about dating >>jews. >>> >>>didn't see it, but I’m guessing it doesn’t have >anything >>>to do with this either. >> >>I saw it. And no, it has nothing to do with this. > > they both use lazy, tired anti-semitic tropes that didn't get >called out as such until Jews had to point it out as such. and >i saw them the same day.
just took a look at it out of curiosity - this bitch literally said WASP women shouldn't date Jews and planned to celebrate her newly semite-free dating life with a cocktail garnished with bacon. comparing Mora's comments to that is... quite a reach, to say the least.
>>>it was antisemitic. but there isn't really any indication >of >>>that. it's just jim mora being an asshole, not an >>antisemite. > >why defend him using a trope? He used the trope. he probably >didn't even realize he was doing so, i don't care. but he did >and it's shitty of him and we shouldn't let those tropes slide >right by because there's an alternative explanation. Nah, >don't use those tropes.
not sure how calling him an asshole for what he said was defending him. but you called it veiled antisemitism, which connotes intent. there is no indication that there was any intent of antisemitism with his comments, and you agree that he probably didn't have any intention of doing so. so not sure what you're disagreeing with here. if your argument is just that the optics of making those comments about a Jewish player are problematic because they fall in line with antisemitic tropes and so shouldn't be used, then we agree.
>to me, it's bizarre people are trying to defend Jim Mora like >this. Why? why not be like "yeah, calling a jewish athlete not >blue-collar and saying he should go to New York instead of >Cleveland is a kinda bad look" I know he said NY because >they're picks #2 and #3 in the draft. don't be dense--it's >about it being a bad look, not about his belief that we jews >have horns or are (((globalists))). but that's out there, so >be a little smarter about not accidentally or intentionally >sounding like one of those shitheads. > >but no. you cape for Jim fucking Mora? ok...
nobody was caping for mora. and yeah his comments were a bad look, on multiple levels. but you didn't say it was about it being a bad look, you said it was antisemitism. if it's about it being a bad look, then yeah I don't think anyone was disagreeing with that (at least I wasn't.)

2650075, ^^^ for the anti-semite contingent Posted by bentagain, Tue Apr-10-18 01:33 PM
Mora...whatever your opinion of him maybe...held a position of authority as an elder in this young man's life
when he says...he wants to know why...I'm interpreting that as
...he questioned me and my authority at every turn...
unless there are more specific comments that haven't been posted in this thread
we're not interpreting his comments the same.

2649315, What Mora said was code speak for how I phrased it Posted by bentagain, Wed Apr-04-18 06:11 PM
i.e. He said the same thing...nicely
Put your semitism agenda to the side for a second and put his comment into context
17' was supposed to be the year for UCLA football
They were preseason chip contenders
and Rosen was supposed to win the heisman
...they weren't even close on either front...
So now you have a former HC being asked about his star prospect after a trash season
Instead of saying...fuck that guy...like I did...he played nice
I stand by my comment...dude won't be in the league after his rookie deal.
|
2649316, its not an agenda. it's an ugly trope that he shouldn't have echoed Posted by thejerseytornado, Wed Apr-04-18 06:15 PM
intentionally or not. that's all. /story
but apparently, pointing out he repeated an anti-semitic trope is just a sign of being mad because non-jews know more about what is or is not an anti-semitic trope than Jews.

In context, I think it's a certain type of high praise…like, he is not going to do well on a team of bums and guys just out for their checks; he is not going to run through a wall because his coach yells loud. Basically don't draft this kid unless you have a plan, unless you can really teach, unless you are really confident in the offensive minds around you and your team. But if you do, he is going to be a superstar.

2650144, Yo, that’s the most endearing athlete interview I’ve ever read Posted by Tiger Woods, Tue Apr-10-18 10:08 PM
I admittedly had no opinion of his personality before reading that but now I like him.
You know what the problem here is? Most football guys are idiots and this kid is actually smart. Some of those answers are so assured they read like it’s Aaron Rodgers, but the vast majority of coaches and NFL decision makers resemble Mike McCarthy, Rodgers’ bumbling charisma-less chode of a coach. Mora is actually jealous of Rosen, because Mora would be an insurance salesman if his last name wasn’t Mora.
I think Sean McVay is smart, and obviously Bill Belichick is smart. Tomlin and Zimmer, smart men. But most of these guys are buffoons who can hardly put a sentence together. Smarts like Rosen’s are intimidating to simpletons like these “football men.” Can you imagine what kind of conversation Jay Gruden or Jason Garrett or Dirk Koetter would have with Josh Rosen?
I hope this kid balls. He’s smarter than most quarterbacks too. It will take so little effort by him to quickly be better than Andy Dalton or Joe Flacco or Jameis Winston...and imagine if he’s even more successful.
|
2650172, I mean and look at the stock he comes from Posted by T Reynolds, Wed Apr-11-18 08:25 AM
Father is not only a doctor but a beacon of principle? A father who is own son would unabashedly claim as his hero in an edgy interview?
Josh comes from a good background and is proud of it, and football is decidedly a blue collar sport from the ground up, where grit and service to that which is larger than us are honored most highly. Your point is good about the average head coach in the league, and I would go further to say that even the boardrooms aren't necessarily stocked with mental giants.
Toward the end of the article, though, I was kinda like "Bro, just suck his dick already WOW"
like after reading this I honestly believe when he's sowed his intellectual oats in the whatever QB room is lucky enough to have him, he will go on to tackle tougher problems than football, like cancer.

He was the No. 1 in the country. I was No. 2. He was going to bring USC back to the promised land. Blake Barnett — after Ricky kind of faded away. Blake Barnett was the Elite 11 MVP. He was the dude that was going to go to Bama, win a couple championships and go to the league as the first overall pick. You don’t really hear about him too much. Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield. These dudes that are these exotic, cool, flashy quarterbacks. That No. 1 pick — all this stuff. And I’m No. 2. And you know what, I’m gonna sit here. 2719308, TBH, would like to see him join tampa. Sit on practice squad & learn from... Posted by dillinjah, Sat Sep-05-20 08:51 AM
Brady, Leftwich and Arians for a couple of years.
I'm not sure if he has better options at this point. For some reason I still think he might salvageable, though you know that confidence is shot

2719381, hope this works out. Posted by dillinjah, Mon Sep-07-20 09:57 AM

2719310, man, I was so dead wrong about this guy Posted by will_5198, Sat Sep-05-20 11:06 AM
it's still odd to me
not sure if he was just that untalented or he's an actual asshole. if it's the former, he'll end up as a back-up somewhere. but the latter would explain a lot.
|
2719315, I mean, is he actually worse than Josh Allen? Posted by Orbit_Established, Sat Sep-05-20 01:53 PM

He might be
Dude has basically been afforded no chance for leeway or wiggle room

2719322, Like Will, I was really high on Rosen and his potential Posted by calij81, Sat Sep-05-20 04:32 PM
I am really second guessing his talent but the only thing from me calling him a complete bust is what you just said.
He has played for two bad teams, that had minimal talent, and both with rookie head coaches.

2719388, Take what you will from this anecdotal account on Twitter Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Mon Sep-07-20 05:39 PM
But according to this poster who referenced a story from his cousin who played with Rosen at UCLA (bare with me) Rosen was physically gifted, but was an asshole and was a poor leader.
His lack of EQ would put his career in context.

2719448, he's also been put in one of the worst spots of any young QB i've seen Posted by GOMEZ, Tue Sep-08-20 02:19 PM
he's also still only 23. He hasn't shown that he's a starting QB by any means, but I wouldn't write him off entirely yet. I saw some flashes in AZ, but that team was dog shit, and I felt bad for him watching him play against the Seahawks.
Dude needs to find himself a good situation and a good organization. He might just be an asshole, too, but there are more than a few real assholes with starting QB jobs in the NFL.

2745231, Waved…still anti-Semitic…? Posted by bentagain, Wed Aug-18-21 04:56 PM
Dude lost the competition for 3rd string QB…to Nate Sudafed Who didn’t exactly show signs of being an NFL QB during his time in Philly Dude couldn’t even make the roster as the official clipboard holder LOL@anti-semitic.
|
2745268, that whole anti semitic argument was trash Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Aug-19-21 11:56 AM
Obviously something is broken in this kid.
Maybe its being rich and “smart” or it could simply be a guy who doesn’t respond well to adversity.
Much better QB’s have failed so its not the end of the world but 4 teams in 3 years screams bust.

2745287, man.. fuck that rich kid excuse. Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Aug-20-21 11:34 AM
he just failed
