2626735, 4 racing presidents <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< YOUPPI!

I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy every October flameout.
2626757, Not his fault
Posted by bnicedh, Fri Oct-20-17 01:07 PM
He managed the team bout as good as it could through all the injuries. He didn't guide the team to the NLCS but that wasn't his fault. However, I think his only 'sin' was being too loyal Jason Werth .
2626793, I didn't follow the Nats much
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Fri Oct-20-17 07:03 PM
IIRC, he was brought in to get the team to the next level. (Pennants or a Title)

As good as the Nats are, they just ran into better teams both years. Like you said, it's hard to fault him outright but he didn't meet the expectation the team had when they hired him.

This article gives some interesting context tho:

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2017/10/20/dusty-baker-fired-nationals/785731001/

The question is though, who manages the team going forward?

Last note. If this is the end of Baker's career (which seems likely. He's 68.) what is his legacy? He's made the playoffs with 4 teams, going to the WS once and was up in that one before being overtaken. (3-1?)

According to wiki, he has a .532 winning percentage. I don't know where that ranks among managers all time but he's got a good track record. He's good, maybe really good. Just not great, I suppose. Is that a fault?
2626794, His legacy - right or wrong- is killing Kerry Wood and Mark Prior
Posted by Y2Flound, Fri Oct-20-17 07:08 PM
Not that specifically, but it's probably the most high profile example of him having the pieces and not achieving what people expected with them.

It's a perception and perceptions aren't always right, but Prior and Wood are the first things I think of when I think of him.
2626796, Kerry Wood and Mark Prior are part of his legacy
Posted by will_5198, Fri Oct-20-17 07:16 PM
they don't define it. that's so reductive and "hot take-y".
2626797, Yes it is, but that's how people get remembered
Posted by Y2Flound, Fri Oct-20-17 07:25 PM
Someone's legacy to me is what do you think of, one thing that they will always be remembered and known for. From there you build it out with more details.

Jordan - 6 titles is the legacy and then you build from there

Dusty Baker- The burning of young pitchers through over use leading to windows closing quicker is the quick take legacy and you build from there.

It's hot takey, asking what someone's legacy is is hot takey unless you want to enter along nuanced conversation about each person.
2626798, to me, it's not.
Posted by will_5198, Fri Oct-20-17 07:44 PM
Dusty managed the Cubs for four of his 17 years as a manager. maybe he ruined Wood and Prior with his high pitch counts, maybe Prior just had a horrible delivery and would've had the same career being pulled after 90 pitches.

nobody knows for sure with pitchers -- Nats did everything by the modern book and saw their two best young pitchers get TJ in back-to-back seasons.

either way, I think the whole Wood-Prior-Dusty thing is hyperbolic and overblown because of Cubs fan culture.

him being remembered as doing less with more I don't agree with either. he made the Giants, Cubs, Reds and Nats better once he got there.

I'd say Dusty's legacy is a hell of a players coach who was old-school to his benefit and fault.
2626795, bullshit
Posted by will_5198, Fri Oct-20-17 07:15 PM
and I don't trust the Lerners to find anyone better

they probably have a hard-on for cheating-ass Farrell

Posted by will_5198, Mon Oct-30-17 10:24 PM
but thank goodness this wasn't Farrell.
2628091, It's who they should have hired 4 years ago
Posted by Call It Anything, Tue Oct-31-17 02:41 AM
I'm cool with it. No reason they shouldn't make the playoffs again next year. Nobody will care either way until October. Winning the division with 4 different managers in 7 years would be kind of wild though.
2749061, put some respect on his name

2749325, Dusty v. Ron. What a way to go into the World Series.

2749351, probably will be like with Spygate since other teams did it too they are...
Posted by ThaTruth, Tue Oct-26-21 01:10 PM
probably just going to sweep it under the rug and hope people eventually forget
2774595, ...and, he's back....
Posted by Dstl1, Sun Oct-23-22 06:52 AM
almost exactly 5 years from when I feared he might never manage again. Back in the WS. It's not lost on me that this would be an all-world T.G.I.S., should the Yankees win 4 straight...but, that's how certain I am that ain't happening.
2774600, Yessir! It’s amazing how they try not to give him credit
Posted by ThaTruth, Sun Oct-23-22 11:53 AM
2774604, they who? They said he was the perfect choice to restore credibility to
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Sun Oct-23-22 12:40 PM
Houston in the wake of the cheating scandal, and he's gotten alot of credit for doing so and righting the ship, and deservedly so.
2774603, LOL yeah I was about to say this

>would be an all-world T.G.I.S., should the Yankees win 4
>straight...but, that's how certain I am that ain't happening.

but with Houston's pitching staff (won the AL pitching staff triple crown + led AL in WHIP and opponent BA, bullpen led MLB in ERA) and home field advantage, yeah that ain't happening.
