However, now that they are going it alone, the $495 price tag is pretty brilliant. I think they could have put a little more into them to justify the price but it probably wasn't necessary since they will sell the majority for less and the full-priced ones they sell will be mostly on hype.

He is doing NO advertising, just a dogshit GeoCities website with a shopping cart, some terse words and NO RETURNS OR EXCHANGES. How else could you generate articles in The New York Times, GQ, etc and get on every broadcast medium out there FOR FREE?

They will sell some at this price and they will sell more at a higher price than the production value, R&D and marketing merit.
