2577950, COLLEGE HOOPS, Week 2: Early Season Tournament Week
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Nov-21-16 01:22 PM
The best ones to watch:

Maui Invitational: http://mauiinvitational.com/sports/2014/8/6/2014Bracket.aspx

The way to beat UNC is to make your 3s. I don't think Wisconsin and Oregon can make enough 3s to get it done... though the return of Dillon Brooks for Oregon could make it interesting.

Battle 4 Atlantis: http://www.atlantisbahamas.com/media/events/Battle%204%20Atlantis%20/2016/201B4A_bracket.jpg

Louisville vs. Baylor in the title game imo... and Baylor could get it done. Strong point guard play, enough size to deal with Louisville inside, and Louisville is a terrible free throw shooting team.

Advocare Invitational: http://espnevents.com/advocare-invitational/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2016/09/2016-AdvoCare-Invitational-Bracket.pdf

Iowa State-Miami should be a really good one... and the winner to play Gonzaga. I like Gonzaga to beat either, though Miami in particular could be a tough matchup for them.

Wooden Legacy: http://espnevents.com/wooden-legacy/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2016/10/2016-Wooden-Legacy-Bracket-Eastern.pdf

Dayton doesn't have the size to deal with UCLA's bigger bodies... and though I think Texas A&M easily has the talent to deal with UCLA, and they're much better defensively than UCLA, it's tough to imagine A&M winning in what is basically a home game for the Bruins, all things considered. Gilder will have to really shackle Lonzo Ball for A&M to get it done.

Bunch of other fun games too! Great week ahead.
2578053, Tennessee played not terribly in a loss to Wisconsin

Vols' nonconference is not a confidence-builder (already lost at home to Chattanooga, and have a Chapel Hill date in the future) but might as well see what you have against the best.
2578064, Definitely playing for the future.

Unlikely to make the tournament this year, but assuming the possible returnees all come back healthy, should be a tourney team the year after.
2578230, took Oregon to OT

Dillon Brooks was really out of form, but he made the game-winning three. Tennessee was sloppy and lacked for a consistent offense, but they played D and hit the boards.

and does Bill Walton even like college basketball anymore? you have to think a lot of these modern slopfests make him wince. I know sarcastic hyperbole is his shtick, but he was extra sardonic today:

Bernstein: That's 20 turnovers for Oregon.
Walton: How many does Tennessee have?
B: 21.
W: Great execution today.

B: Oregon has to call a timeout on the inbounds play.
W: They can't even inbounds the ball! Find a big guy and have him pass it to a small guy.

W: When's the last time Oregon made a field goal? Has it been today?

B: And, looks like we're going to overtime...
W: Yes, more great basketball at Maui gym! The crowd is going wild.
2578310, It's not "Maui gym." It's Maui Jim. The sunglasses brand.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Nov-23-16 01:48 AM
Which makes it even better/worse. He says it as punctuation constantly during the Maui Invitational, because they're sponsors. It's also why he rambles about color, clarity, and detail so often these games-- it's Maui Jim's motto.

My favorite thing that he said this tournament was yesterday during the G'Town/Oregon game:

"This is the greatest I've seen them play." - Bill
"Bill, this is the first time you've seen them play." - Roxy
"Those are both true statements." - Bill

It still makes Pac-12 basketball throughout the season insanely interesting to watch-- especially since many of the teams from that conference won't be especially good this season.

And yeah, really impressed with Tennessee yet again today. Oregon has been *terrible* shooting the ball this season, but the tenacity of the Vols on defense can't be dismissed. In a really weak SEC this year, there's a lot of room for someone to sneak in and grab third or fourth in the conference. Not that Tennessee is necessarily that team... but it's not impossible to see.

>B: And, looks like we're going to overtime...
>W: Yes, more great basketball at Maui gym! The crowd is going
>wild.
2578060, Oregon stunk up the joint and lost to the damn Hoyas
Posted by Beezo, Mon Nov-21-16 08:33 PM
2578065, To Georgetown's credit, they played really good D.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Nov-21-16 09:04 PM
But to Oregon's discredit, they've shot the ball terribly so far this season. Shooting 27.4% from 3 on the season to date. That is... bad. That's five full percentage points worse than UNC shot last year.
2578074, Agreed, solid effort by G'Town tonight.
Posted by Beezo, Mon Nov-21-16 10:06 PM
Yea..Oregon can't shoot and Dillon was trying to do too much in his limited minutes tonight. Terrible game by Dorsey too.
2578327, Hoyas are going to be frustrating again this year
Posted by The Real, Wed Nov-23-16 08:43 AM
Talent to beat anybody but will build you up just to lose.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2578329, Wisconsin thugged them out last night
Posted by Beezo, Wed Nov-23-16 09:23 AM
2578073, Michigan dominated a decent 2k classic
Posted by cgonz00cc, Mon Nov-21-16 10:02 PM
Just hope the injury bug has been eradicated. Walton and Irvin are rolling.

DJ Wilson seems to have ripened nicely also.
2578075, Wilson impressed me most. He really seemed to turn it on.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Nov-21-16 10:13 PM
If he plays like that all year, they'll definitely make some noise. And yeah, they fucked up a halfway decent SMU team-- Walton made sure early that they were demoralized.
2578082, Good grief, UCONN is bad.
Posted by Beezo, Mon Nov-21-16 10:41 PM
2578211, Ole Miss sticking with Creighton late on CBSSN.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Nov-22-16 02:43 PM
2578304, Jays pull away late
Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Wed Nov-23-16 01:20 AM
61% from 3 point range helps a lot

This 'Nova, Xavier, Creighton Big East battle is going to be exciting

Butler plays Indiana soon, so we will see what they are made of
2578281, #3 Indiana goes down to IPFW
Posted by Beezo, Tue Nov-22-16 11:13 PM
College ball is here
2578311, I think people underestimated Fort Wayne.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Nov-23-16 01:49 AM
They're expected to win the Summit this season, and they were at home with a massive chip on their shoulder.

This upset wasn't nearly as big as Arkansas State beating Georgetown.
2578317, I damn sure did. I didn't know much about them
Posted by Beezo, Wed Nov-23-16 06:23 AM
Scrappy, feisty , physical
2578363, John Konchar can BALL
Posted by DonVito, Wed Nov-23-16 12:40 PM
Much respect for the Mastadons, they traded punches impressively anytime I thought we were gonna make a run and never gave up a run that could have choked them out.
2578375, LSU getting roasted by Wichita State
Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Wed Nov-23-16 01:13 PM
46-19 at the half, yikes!
2578397, Johnny Jones may not make it to Christmas.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Nov-23-16 02:28 PM
They are so, so, so, so bad.
2578426, Johnathan Motley is legit.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Nov-23-16 03:54 PM
He'll be an early second round steal for some team in need.
2578443, Bill Walton on the call for this Oregon vs UCONN game
Posted by Beezo, Wed Nov-23-16 04:50 PM
I'm all in
2578444, Those kids in Blue are pretty good huh?
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Wed Nov-23-16 04:52 PM
2578451, They aiight
Posted by Beezo, Wed Nov-23-16 05:32 PM
2578467, Michigan shot 19 percent from the field today.
Posted by will_5198, Wed Nov-23-16 07:16 PM
10-of-52. 7-of-26 (7 percent) from three.

they made 23 free throws but good gracious that has to be one of worst offensive games by a ranked team since Georgetown and Tennessee took turns throwing bricks across the gym four years ago.
2578477, It was such a freakshow that i honestly dont even care
Posted by cgonz00cc, Wed Nov-23-16 07:36 PM
A team shoots in the teens and isnt blown out by 30+?

Im actually encouraged lol
2578668, be nice if we drove to the basket occasionally..

2578559, MSU isn't playing great... but Baylor is also just that good.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Nov-24-16 01:55 PM
2578665, UCLA looks really good
Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Fri Nov-25-16 12:55 AM
which has been rare for them to start the season looking so string since the Howland glory days. Wish they had more depth but als, thats college basketball
2578820, we got depth....Prince Ali will be back soon
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sat Nov-26-16 03:20 PM

2578703, MUHHHHHH! My bankroll is happy.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Nov-25-16 05:34 PM
I'd kissed my money goodbye with about ten minutes to go, lol. Such resilience in this Baylor team. So goddamn balanced, too.
2579112, Longo Ben stiller ball doesn't look or play like a freshman
Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Sun Nov-27-16 10:07 PM
That might be the ugliest good shot ever
2579116, Bruins win Wooden...7-0...headed into top 10...
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sun Nov-27-16 10:21 PM
Love the way this team plays....much better defensively than I expected...

with Big Ike coming back this weekend...we got 3 solid Freshman contributing..

this is going to be fun...
