2574695, Russell Westbrook and The Cult of the Scowling Negro
Posted by Basaglia, Fri Nov-04-16 09:09 AM

Very simple. Why do people constantly cyse the "toughness" and "heart" and "drive" and "competitiveness" of black athletes who engage in demonstrative displays of loserdom?

I love Russ, but I can't pretend he don't be folding when the lights get bright and things get tough. I'm not talking about being scared of the moment, I'm talking about being unable to focus when you're in it. You can't just "aggressive" your way to winning...against elite opponents. That game ain't have to be a blowout. Russ imploded and the team followed.

I ain't saying KD was right to leave, but I was reminded why he did.

2574697, Cam Newton too or nah?

i'm easily amused.

stay bouncing around. At least stick to something. I might be getting cooked right now, but can't no one produce receipts where I was shitting on Russ.
2574724, Is it fair
Posted by Numba_33, Fri Nov-04-16 10:02 AM
to call this OKC squad the millennial version of those Sixers teams Iverson led in his heyday?

It'll be interesting to see what the future holds for OKC beyond this season.
2574732, in theory but they will go about it differently
Posted by Cenario, Fri Nov-04-16 10:17 AM
That sixer squad was a defensive beast and liked to play in that grind it out halfcourt/style.

While this thunder team is good defensively, they won't finish in the same category defensively as the sixers. They are also looking to run and gun, which plays to russy's strengths.
2574773, I was making that comparison
Posted by Numba_33, Fri Nov-04-16 12:21 PM
strictly off the optics of Iverson leading the Sixers and Westbrook leading this Thunder team, similar to how the original thread is based on the optics of Westbrook scowling after loses. I didn't mean to infer both teams were similar in style and you are correct, those old Sixers teams were much much slower than those Iverson led teams.
2574734, I'm holding out all hope we can lure Blake home next season...
Posted by Dstl1, Fri Nov-04-16 10:18 AM
not gonna be bad enough for the tank...not good enough to go anywhere in the playoffs.
2574739, best case scenario is to lose a hard WCF
Posted by Tiger Woods, Fri Nov-04-16 10:40 AM
then you can tell Blake "we're one piece away"

On the other hand, Blake already plays with a mercurial point guard who he allegedly doesn't get along with.
2574832, You guys just won't have the money for that
Posted by Premiere, Fri Nov-04-16 03:41 PM
Without dealing Kanter and other pieces, and if it was so easy to deal Kanter, I think the Thunder would have already, if for nothing than getting out from under that future luxury tax money and getting minutes for all their bigs/small lineups featuring Roberson at the four.

And that's great until about 4 minutes left in the 4th.

2574746, The sudden Westbrook backlash is soo ESPN of you guys.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Fri Nov-04-16 10:51 AM

I expect better from you guys.

a) You obviously didn't watch the game. Russ had
the game close. He exited the game, and GSW immediately
went total apeshit and it was over. OKC can't play
from behind, because they aren't that type of team.
Their only hope is to grit and hustle and keep things
close.

b) Russ is headed for 29, 11 and 8, with a team that
starts Sabonis Jr and will be atop 4 seed in the West.
(the stronger conference, unlike Iverson, who did it
in the weaker conference). Russ is every bit as remarkable
as he's being praised for.

2574756, Wait -- so now Russ "don't know how to win???" THAT is the narrative?
Posted by Orbit_Established, Fri Nov-04-16 11:41 AM

What about KD?

Did he "not know how to win" until he joined Golden
State?

What's the KD narrative?

But on a larger note:

Ba -- what happened to you?

Say something smart, QUICK.

You used to be one of the SMARTEST mad-makers around.

Where did that go?

This is embarrassing.

Posted by Beezo, Fri Nov-04-16 01:03 PM
In a loss though
2574781, That's being very very modest.
Posted by Numba_33, Fri Nov-04-16 01:06 PM
Especially with that point total. Dunno how exciting it'll be to watch Westbrook stat pad since the Cavs will probably be up 26 points mid way through the second quarter, but stat padding is just about the only thing he can look forward to in that game.
2574782, I feel like "stat padding" has kinda jumped the shark in OKS...
Posted by Dstl1, Fri Nov-04-16 01:14 PM
at least, the use of the term. I don't see how it's stat padding that he's the only one on the team that can make a play for himself and someone else. He literally has to robin-feed these dudes their baskets. If he's on the floor...what should he do? Not play?
2574793, It's not his fault the roster is trash
Posted by Numba_33, Fri Nov-04-16 01:45 PM
but he's going to get his in spectacular fashion while the Thunder will get their collective brains beaten in by the Cavs. Westbrook is playing against the defending champs and a top tier point guard, so I'd expect him to show out based on being highly competitive.
2574800, RE: That's being very very modest.

When u r on a bad to uneven team, it is not stat-padding.....

Westbrook now has to be superhuman every night for his team to have a chance to win....

2574815, russ don't stat pad...he go 100% all the time
Posted by Cenario, Fri Nov-04-16 02:45 PM
if his team is down 20 with 2mins to go he's going 100% bc thats the only gear he knows and he prolly think they still gon win.
2574817, Neither of them did & it was a point of contention
Posted by LA2Philly, Fri Nov-04-16 02:52 PM
Both constantly reverted back to isolation hero ball and it cost that OKC team for years in the playoffs. Once either KD or Russy started going iso ball, the other would get frustrated and get his shots in...leading to a lot of difficulty possessions. Last season, Donovan did a tremendous job of getting them to execute down the stretch of games and was in process of changing those habits.

For 7 consecutive games in the '15 playoffs (starting after the game 3 loss to SA where Russy was really sloppy with the ball down the stretch of the game and admitted as much afterwards), both of them were consistent and disciplined in their approach to executing sets and it showed. However, both of them reverted back to their old habits when the pressure ratcheted up (which tends to happen with behavior change) when up 6 with 8 minutes left and it cost OKC that game, that series, and ultimately that partnership.

Basaglia said this right above me but it's no coincidence that KD decided to pick a team that knows how to win, whose success has been based on relentless execution. The sad part is even with that OKC loss, both Russ and KD with Donovan's influence showed they were right on the cusp of finally getting it; both of them made huge strides last year and I was really hoping to see them take the next step this season. Obviously, that's all just some alternate reality now lol.
2574823, this is the part that crushes my soul every time I think about it

Posted by LA2Philly, Fri Nov-04-16 02:35 PM
Athlete shows emotions = he/she cares! = competitive/gritty/etc.

Athlete doesn't show emotion = he/she doesn't care! = not competitive/gritty/etc

It's an easy binary reference point, a cognitive trap that most people fall into.

I get that dude has less help than he did last year and less help than all of his MVP counterparts; however, he has shooters around him (Abrines, McDermott, Sabonis), literally half the best defenders in the league (Adams, Gibson, Roberson, even Oladipo), and several PnR finishers. He has guys around him; now, what they don't have is a good enough system or Russ facsimile to replace dude when he sits (Gordon and now Williams do a much better job for Harden; Bron has Ky; Leonard has the Spurs fucking organization).

But we can't keep saying dude has no help. They lose to the Warriors because they have less talent (and literally, who the fuck doesn't?), not no talent.
