2567638, Weekend Soccer 09.30-10.02: Son kind of wonderful

After suffering their first non-win of the season in Glasgow on Wednesday, Manchester City head to White Hart Lane trying to reaffirm their nascent stranglehold on the title race, against a solid but streaky Spurs side. Tottenham hasn't completely clicked yet, but with the best defense in the league (3 goals allowed) they've done enough to be in 2d place. Son Heung-Min's blistering form has enabled them to not feel Kane's absence too much, and if Erikssen can shake off his early struggles, they could do something big on Sunday.
Still, a topsy-turvy European fixture does not a trend make, and while De Bruyne and Kompany are still a couple weeks away from returning, this is still the formidable team that's been deadly so far in the league. Sterling had another excellent game against Celtic, and with Aguero getting his health back, Spurs' defensive record will be sorely tested.

After thoroughly beating Leicester last week, United have another shot at inflicting a whipping, as they take on lowly Stoke. Mark Hughes has been high on the charts of bookmakers' favorites to be dumped, and no doubt a pasting here would not help. Leicester will try to right the ship against a revitalized Southampton, who have won 2 straight.

Sunday there's a big Serie A clash between Roma and Inter where both teams will want all 3pts if they are to keep up with Juve and Napoli.

2567664, oddly confident for sunday against city

they haven't dealt with the press in our past couple meetings and Swansea/celtic both approached with that kind of game. interested to see how guardiola reacts to it.
2567666, I could see a draw at least for Spurs
Posted by benny, Fri Sep-30-16 01:05 PM
that might be more wishful thinking because I don't want the title race to be over too soon though, but yeah City haven't exactly faced world-beaters through their run (that's counting United, at least the version they faced)
2567668, yeah, it's way too early to hand them anything yet.

their wins are against the bottom 4 teams, the 6th lowest team (so 5 of the bottom 6) and a shambolic united side.

i'd still rate them the favorites, but talk to me in a month. they've got some more challenging fixtures coming up, starting this weekend.
2568073, still not particularly impresssed.
Posted by dula dibiasi, Mon Oct-03-16 03:32 PM
no KDB notwithstanding, first good side they face and they got trashed. i need to see more.
2567674, draw would be good result.
Posted by Drizzit, Fri Sep-30-16 01:53 PM
would love to take more and make a statement, but it's guardiola's city. bit different than past iterations.
2567683, Pep's greatest issues have come vs excellent press teams

If you can stay within your shape and negate space consistently, it really does mess up his first 2/3 build-up rhythm and too often there's no plan B. That being said, it takes a helluva mental and physical effort to keep that press throughout the game with limited mistakes.
2567849, BOOM!
Posted by Drizzit, Sun Oct-02-16 10:14 AM
great game. should have been closer but spurs missed a penalty as well.

love this team and how they play.
2567675, Afraid City are going to go Spurs the business...

2567840, DE Gea really fucked it today lol
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Sun Oct-02-16 08:11 AM
Had 1 thing to do all day and couldn't do it right.

Other than that the performance was good. On another day Ibra bags that goal Pogba puts on a platter 2 mins in and we roll them. But Stokes goalie stood on his head all day.

Hopefully nobody gets hurt on international break.
2567842, holy buildup on that goal Batman!
Posted by benny, Sun Oct-02-16 08:51 AM
Was getting worried Spurs couldnt keep up their press as they seemed to start being less sharp since the 30th, but that 2d goal is gonna do wonders for Pochettino's tactical options

Fantastic game so far, from both sides
2567853, Hats off to Tottenham

Maintained their energy and discipline on the press while taking their chances offensively to A)make City hesitant to bomb forward and B) obviously, actually score.
2567855, just woke up and watched the game on the DVR and....*VOMIT*
Posted by PROMO, Sun Oct-02-16 11:09 AM
blown chances, taking half the game off and then whatever jaunt De Gea decided to go on.

*VOMITS AGAIN*
2567856, hay Premier League!

I'm really not sure who I would pick for MOTM, which is a credit to how well organized and sharp Spurs were on their press, and in defense (dat marking on Aguero). Hell of a game to watch, and while I still don't know what to make of the Spurs, it makes for a very appealing rest of the season. The problem for them, as it often is for Pochettino teams, is going to be how to keep it up month after month

United is just beyond puzzling at this point. Mou's teams generally hit the ground running when he starts a new job, not sure what's wrong here beyond him not having the tactical solutions and various players under-performing.
2567885, City is a totally different team without De Bruyne

2567867, totally unexpected
Posted by dillinjah, Sun Oct-02-16 12:27 PM
still, those are the kind of wins we sorely need to make a real title run
2567871, especially this weekend, that's +3 on City

U17 women's world cup game, lol thought it felt relevant.
2568025, Oh so we not going to mention the new American manager in the Premier League
Posted by Sleepy, Mon Oct-03-16 10:44 AM
Congrats? Bob Bradley. Hope you can find a way to keep Swansea up in the EPL.

Oh, and Son Heung-Min has had an incredible uptick in form this season. It's kinda crazy. Almost forgot about that other guy who hasn't really shown up this season.
2568031, guidolin sacked on his bday.
Posted by dula dibiasi, Mon Oct-03-16 11:19 AM
harsh.
