2558955, Olympics Post

Started the day with fencing drama with Massialas. Fantastic match.

Great day for Simone Biles.

Bad day for Venus Williams.

Anyone else watching the Olympics?
2558956, Gymnastics really needs to find their Weir/Lipinski
Posted by Walleye, Sun Aug-07-16 10:11 PM
These nerds are no fun at all, and their gymwonkery never lands either. You're asking us to care about this sport once every four years, so you're going to need to either:

a)re-explain way more stuff, both administratively and technically
b)just be unabashed fans and freak out at these tiny little women flinging themselves through the air

I'm pretty much indifferent on the choices here, as I can't watch even the (apparently) mediocre gymnasts compete without an endless stream of "holyshitholyshitholyshitholyshit." But there has to be more than simply telling me whether they stuck the landing or not. It's literally the *only* thing I can tell with my own eyes.

Mostly, I'm just waiting on track. Also, Katie Ledecky said "hello" to me once. It was my third longest conversation with a famous person.
2558957, gymnastics broadcast team is so trash and tbh swimming is too

their track and field team this year hasn't been great either (in the trials)

2558980, yes the announcers are terrible
Posted by 3xKrazy, Mon Aug-08-16 08:45 AM
I'd mute it but I like hearing the crowd reactions and all that. I don't need the commentary.
2558965, I high fived Gabby Douglas and her mom once.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Aug-08-16 12:33 AM
That's the best interaction with an Olympian I've ever had.

And I agree-- the gymnastics announcers are essentially the judges from So You Think You Can Dance. They just point out that the gymnasts "really want it" and "are here to win" and don't really help me understand. And when a deduction is more than they expect it to be, their response amounts to, "Huh, that was a strange deduction. Oh well, I thought she was great!" THERE'S GOTTA BE MORE TO IT THAN THAT! lol
2558974, this is my issue
Posted by Ashy Achilles, Mon Aug-08-16 07:57 AM
i want more information from them
2558975, That made me smile
Posted by Walleye, Mon Aug-08-16 08:10 AM
I'm torn on whether the story would improve with context, so I'm going to rely on your discretion there while noting that if context makes mentioning that you high-fived Gabby Douglas and her mom *more* entertaining then I'm happy to have it.

While this all sounds like broadcast kvetching, I'd like to point out for the sake of positivity that I love how Weir and Lipinski turned the equally dull and pretentious figure skating broadcasts into something fun, without (apparently, I guess I wouldn't really know) sacrificing technical observations.
2559062, The things about gymnastics scoring is that it's based on subtleties
Posted by Hitokiri, Mon Aug-08-16 08:11 PM
It's really hard stuff to catch to the untrained eye.
I've learned to look and see if their legs come apart (while flipping or dismounting), if they're pointing their toes. Obviously if they wobble or struggle to balance themselves, if they over or under rotate. They're supposed to keep their lines straight, be straight up on their handstands.

It's a lot of things that are really subtle.
2559070, To be clear: I want trained eyes to explain those subtleties on TV...
Posted by Walleye, Mon Aug-08-16 09:38 PM
... and I want them to be interesting.

At present, they are not succeeding at either of these things.
2559593, the coverage in general has been tiresome
Posted by will_5198, Fri Aug-12-16 02:18 PM
the producers and commentators come in with a narrative, and are so robotic they can't switch gears to anything happening in real-time.
2558958, Simone Biles is amazing w/ the floor routing

but the entire team is insanely talented.
2558971, I'm always shocked at how interested I am every Olympics...
Posted by phenompyrus, Mon Aug-08-16 07:19 AM
Simone Biles is perhaps the most talented gymnast I've ever seen. Michael Phelps still being around at all is pretty cool. I love the NBA on NBC music that plays around watching our team demolish other country's teams (although I was really looking forward to seeing LeBron and Curry play together). I can't wait to see Usain Bolt beat everyone by looking bored by the time he finishes, simply teasing us at how good he could be if he turned it on (his talent is truly unbelievable).
2558976, USA gymnast gals are YOLKED the fuck up
Posted by 3xKrazy, Mon Aug-08-16 08:13 AM
when they show clips of the old gymnasts its amazing to see the difference in physiques from then to now. wonder what's in the water...

and obvious reasons aside, I'm always amazed by how much more I enjoy watching the women's gymnasts compared to the men. The women just seem like much more complete athletes.
2558979, They showed Nadia Comaneci when she got her 10
Posted by j., Mon Aug-08-16 08:42 AM
and in the clip she looks 10

Whats up with the 41 y/o Uzbeki in her 7th olympics (holy shit) still taking kids to gymnast school?

I wonder if there's beef that the (alleged) doped-up Russians were allowed to compete. In the swimming one of the Americans (forgot who) was throwing shade at one of the Russians.

The women's bike race was heartbreaking. First, the Dutch chick was leading cruising down the hill when she slipped and ate it, multiple fractures, the crash looked horrible.

Then the American was cruising down Copacabana on her way to gold and ended up in 4th place after her legs gave out on the last 500 m. That's some bullshit. But at least Holland won.

2558985, 50 mph + slick pavement + coming into a corner too hot...
Posted by Dstl1, Mon Aug-08-16 09:36 AM
that looked awful. Felt bad for Mara, but you could see it coming all the way. 3 vs. 1 was a no-brainer. They ate up her little gap so quick by working together...then they jumped in her slipstream and got her on that home-stretch. To go from leading for 10km to not even getting a medal had to be excruciating for her, but she knows the game.
2558988, Lilly King threw epic levels of shade my goodness
Posted by CherNic, Mon Aug-08-16 10:11 AM

and couldn't clip out

got stuck to the bike over the front tire

I hope all girl is aight...tell me she lived...
2559096, it had nothing to do with the clipless pedals, man...
Posted by Dstl1, Tue Aug-09-16 07:31 AM
she was taking that turn at nearly 50 mph...she came in too hot, tapped the break, the front wheel got loose and it was over. She wouldn't even be considering clipping out at that speed. She had a concussion and broke her vertebrae in three places...still in intensive care.

i felt nothing when I tore my pec. I only knew it because I heard it tear...like the sound when you rip a piece of paper in half. For a few minutes I contemplated going back to what I was doing because there was no pain at all. then I stood up and got dizzy like I was about to faint and the pain began to rush. not fun.

2559022, golf has no place in the olympics.

2559032, Which is worse and more corrupt: IOC or FIFA?
Posted by calij81, Mon Aug-08-16 02:52 PM
2559034, man, that's a tough one but i give the edge to the IOC.
Posted by KiloMcG, Mon Aug-08-16 03:05 PM
they're the most fucked up, IMO.
2559035, That is a tough one, I mean you always here people hating on FIFA
Posted by calij81, Mon Aug-08-16 03:15 PM
and it's completely justifiable but the IOC seems to always get a pass or isn't in the news as much as FIFA, at least that's how it seems to me.

The IOC did work with Hitler and the Nazis to put on the 1936 Olympics and were prepared to give Germany the Winter Games in 1940.

Kind of off topic, it's crazy to think that the Olympic torch relay was started by the Nazis.

I suppose I'm going to have to go with the IOC being more corrupt than FIFA.
2559043, Doping isn't an issue in futbol which is the MAIN issue w/ the IOC
Posted by FILF, Mon Aug-08-16 04:28 PM
The issue w/ FIFA is w/ the federation rather than the athletes.

Cycling & athletics are the most tainted sports rivaling 90s Besibol.

Boxing is the worst of the worst b/c it corrupt at every level.
2559033, So the IOC decided to ban the Russian Paralympics?!?!?!
Posted by calij81, Mon Aug-08-16 02:54 PM
But not the Russian Olympic team? That is so fucked up on so many levels.

It also raises the question, do Paralympic athletes dope like that? Did Russia's doping program really extend to the Paralympic team? Putin really doesn't like to lose does he?

Now that the question of endurance came up, I'm curious which location overall had the highest point of elevation since that'll test your oxygen intake even worse.

I'm 31 and work out regularly and run maybe once a week and I can come close to 6, these dudes literally jump and sprint all day as a job.

because of crashes during the road race, they filled out the roster with people who didn't even have the proper bike type or wheelset and none of the guys who dropped out thought to offer their equipment (partly because one crash = loss of thousands of dollars of equipment, but at the same time, cmon).

the first american crashed 200 meters from the start.

another guys brakes are rubbing his wheel, while another guy's chain is hitting the wheel.

I feel bad for Alaphilippe. He's an insanely good descender (and he was so close multiple times in the Tour de France but crashed while taking some crazy lines) and he was crushing that course but then got stuck behind the crash in front of him. Had he been able to get around that crash, he was in the driver's seat for the gold.

He's 24 tho, he'll be fine. he's fun to watch.

edit: i wonder if Sagan knew the course was that crazy and that's why he's mountain biking instead of road...was like "nah, f that course"

Spain hasn't had issue w/ FIBA Melo b/c the Gasol Bros are actually NBA All-Stars.

hard it is to be the best in multiple different strokes at varying distances. Most Olympic swimmers specialize in 1 stroke and 1 distance (i.e. 100, 200, or 400), but Phelps is completely dominant in so many events that it's just unfathomable.

Phelps is simply on another planet. There is no parallel. It's hard to even wrap my mind around the fact that he finished 5th in the 200m Butterfly at age 15! The 200 Butterfly isn't even an official event for high school swim meets. So how he became that dominant at such a young age is just mind-boggling.

I feel confident in saying that we may never see as decorated swimmer/athlete as Phelps again. Some of you may not see Swimming as tough or challenging as Track, Basketball, etc., but you're being incredibly naive if you think his accomplishments aren't every bit as remarkable. I played Football, Swimming, and Track & Field in high school. I excelled most at Football and swimming was by far the hardest sport. A lot of people who are otherwise athletic in some capacity SUCK at swimming. Just like some gifted 'athletes' suck at Baseball, Football or whatever.

None of that last paragraph was aimed at you, just getting my thoughts out there bc I think some people on this board are incredibly dismissive of Phelp's greatness.

half-marathons which equates to less than a 6:40 pace per mile. I can run a sub 40 minute 10K in my sleep and I was never a great track athlete. Anyone can get mildly fast if they just try and have some shred of athletic ability. Likewise, anyone can get mildly fast at swimming too. In both cases you won't ever get elite unless your train exceptionally hard and have elite athleticism.

If Ledecky can't run a sub 9 minute mile it's because she doesn't run - not because she's unathletic. I'm sure you could find numerous basketball, soccer, track, gymnasts, etc. that can't swim a sub 9 minute 400 meter (the equivalent imo) swim. I wouldn't use that to discredit them.

When he had Ledecky undergo a battery of physical-assessment tests at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, one of the first sentences of the opening summary, according to Gemmell, referred to her as “remarkably unremarkable.”

There were mostly 25 yard and some 25 meter pools where I grew up, yet the area has produced some elite swimmers. Phelps did have the luxury of growing up in suburban Baltimore where one of the most renown swims clubs (North Baltimore Aquatic Club) is located.

I'm not even sure what point you're trying to make anyway. Most areas of the world don't allow for organized football, but yet you never hear some one try to diminish or downplay the athleticism of NFL players.

Phelps grew up in a family of swimmers, if he was a black kid in Baltimore then he might not have even learned how to swim. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere there are swimming facilities available for kids in the States, it's a matter of time/resources/interest.

For the most part, Football is a game based on raw athleticism & there are a handful of football players who played either Bball or baseball along with running track in college. Meanwhile, Ledecky can't do 5 unassisted pull-ups or run an 8 minute mile but is out there annihilating swimming records.

the world and Bolt happens to be the best at it. That still doesn't mean he's the best athlete or most accomplished Olympian.

Golf is even more limited than Swimming and requires (imo) much less raw athletic ability. That didn't stop people from saying Tiger was the best athlete in the world at one point.

Lots of people (relatively speaking across the world) don't play tennis or NFL style football but we don't question Andrew Luck's or Serena William's athletic accomplishments/ability.

And lots more people could swim. Many choose not to because it's tough and receives little fan fare outside of the Olympics. Trust me, as someone who ran track and swam, swimming a 100m/200m event is much tougher than sprinting a 100/200.

Bottom line is that they're both supremely gifted athletes and should be recognized as such. I don't care who you rank over who, but people sound ridiculous and hypocritical when they try to downplay Phelp's athleticism.
2559597, Tiger was probably referred to as most dominate, not best.

2559622, Most dominate athlete or golfer? See I have no problem, but just curious.
Posted by Mignight Maruder, Fri Aug-12-16 03:25 PM
I found an old ESPN article where Gene Wojciechowski named him the greatest ATHLETE ever. Also, in 2015 ESPN named him the 3rd best athlete of the past 20 years right behind MJ and Lebron James. If you do a google search of 'Is Tiger Woods the best athlete ever?' you will find many articles that have him as the best or one of the top. Many of these articles don't contain the qualifier "best golf player ever" or most 'dominant golfer/athlete ever.' If you do a Google search for Phelps the very first article is titled 'The biggest reason Michael Phelps is NOT the greatest athlete ever.' You will also see many more 'greatest swimmer ever' or 'greatest Olympian ever' as opposed to athlete.

That just seems odd to me that many sports writers would be able to place a golfer as the best or among the best ever athletes but not extend that recognition to a swimmer(I'm guessing that will probably change a bit with his recent accomplishments). I guess it all comes down to how you define athleticism. As someone who has participated in both sports (swimming more seriously and golf as a novice) I think it's laughable to suggest Golf requires more athleticism. Not that it doesn't - it most certainly does - just not anymore than swimming.

And when we list the reasons for why Phelps can't be considered the best athlete of all time, let's also not forget those same reasons when throwing golfers and other athletes into the mix. All I'm asking is to be consistent and fair.

if EVERY gymnast was on that level even regular regional/national competitions could be televised.

it was fun watching that one girl flop all over the board too, all power no balance. she was entertaining as hell and should've got some bonus points just for making gymnastics look loose and goofy instead of all technical and stoic lol.

also the Chinese girl freaked me out a bit, she had a raw look to her like she was a walking GMO.

What do you mean by freeze out?

>She then had the gall to say "we lost to a bunch of cowards.
>The better team did not win" o_O

Outside of the poor sportsmanship, did her words have any validity to them? Did the other team flop around to draw silly yellow and/or red cards and/or penalty shots?

I don't follow soccer at all, but I know enough to know the US women's team losing is a pretty big deal since they've gotten gold in the past. How big an upset was today's loss?

she decided to change her gloves before the final kicker, which took a good minute or two, the obvious objective being to let the Swedish player psych herself out, and it failed

honestly it's just baffling. But it's Hope Solo, I'm not sure there's anything to gain from analyzing her declaration. I'm sure part of it was heat of the moment stuff, but she went above-and-beyond in terms of post-game saltiness imho

olympic soccer is a joke. the real prize is the World Cup. but since we're supposed to be the best it's going to be an issue that we lost.

meanwhile, internet trolls had a field day with Gabby's hair, are on some 'disrespectful' ish over her not putting her hand on her heart during the anthem, and that she's a terrible team mate because she wasn't gushing with excitement while other team mates medaled

2560206, The Once brothers game tonight: Serbia vs Croatia
Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Wed Aug-17-16 06:06 AM
great preview from r/nba

https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/4y2917/why_is_tomorrows_quarterfinal_between_serbia_and/

Tomorrow night, one of the biggest games in Serbian and Croatian basketball history takes place in Rio. Even thought the match starts at 03:15am in local time, I doubt there will be anyone asleep, because a win in this match would be more celebrated than actually winning a medal.
Yes, everyone will say that soccer is the most popular sport in Europe, and in Croatia and Serbia as well (Serbia recently won the U20 World Cup in 2015, and even though their senior squad didn't qualify for the "real" World Cup in Brazil, they celebrated like they won that one
Inserted by url2image extension
), but basketball really is something else. I believe a lot of you don't know that Yugoslavia was the only country besides USA and USSR that won an Olympic gold (3 silvers and 1 bronze as well), and everyone should know the story about the most important Olympic team (or as we call it - The real Dream Team). I also recommend watching Once brothers, an ESPN documentary about the relationship of Vlade Divac and Dražen Petrović through the breakup of Yugoslavia.
After all those glorious years, just when the Yugoslavian basketball was reaching its peak (winning 1990 World Cup while beating both USA and USSR, and dominating 1991 EuroBasket), it all came crushing down. A war started. And while Yugoslavian squad was split into two parts, the passion for each of them grew stronger and a big rivalry was born.
Now let's talk about the actual subject. The Curse.
It wasn't long before the two countries met. It was in 1995, at EuroBasket in Greece. Both Yugoslavia (Serbia) and Croatia dominated their groups with 6-0. They were supposed to meet at the finals, and what a match that would have been, hadn't Croatia lost to Lithuania in the semifinals. But the two countries did eventually meet, at the podium. Yugoslavia won the tournament and Croatia was third placed.
The tensions were really high at that moment. While the two countries were playing basketball in Greece, a war was happening at home. The Yugoslav team were about to receive their gold medals, and an unprecedented move happened, Croatian team stepped down from the podium and walked off the court. That marks the start of The Curse - Croatia left the podium, never to return again. Former (and current) Croatian coach, Aleksandar Petrović (older brother of Dražen Petrović), recently said that they had to do that under the pressure from the political top.

The next game between two countries was in Spain, at the 1997 Eurobasket. And that's when the curse started taking its toll. Croatia was leading 62-61, and Saša Đorđević (current coach of Serbia) took the ball and scored this amazing buzzer beater. Yugoslavia went on to win the tournament again while Croatia didn't make it to the Quarterfinals.

Yugoslavia (later Serbia) met with Croatia two more times, and won both games (80:66 in EuroBasket 2001, 73:72 in World Cup 2010, both in Turkey).
One of the most memorable games happen in 2010, in the Adriatic League finals, between Partizan and Cibona (club champions of Serbia and Croatia) in Croatia's capital, Zagreb. The game went to overtime, and in final seconds, Partizan missed clutch free throws, Cibona caught the ball with 6 seconds left, and, now a very well-known player, Bojan Bogdanović scored an amazing three-pointer from the corner to make the game 74-72 for Cibona, with the shot clock at 0.6 seconds. The crowd went wild, players almost rushed on court, Cibona's coach struggled to hold them back waiting for the final buzzer. Dušan Kecman from Partizan took the ball and threw it from full court out of desperation. And the ball went in. The next day, if you asked anyone about the game, they would just say: "The curse."

Croatia really didn't step on the medal podium again, while Yugoslavia, later Serbia had better luck.
Tommorow's game is more than just a game. The curse will definitely stay, but the real question is, who will stay affected by it?
Why do I say that?
Because before the start of the Olympics, "Serbian Sports Minister Vanja Udovicic had issued a directive to the country's athletes to conduct a protest walk-out if any Kosovar athlete stepped onto the medals podium." Sounds familiar? The saddest part is, that the Minister is actually a very successful athlete himself, he was one of the best Water Polo players in Serbia.
So, if Miloš Teodosić, Bogdan and Bojan Bogdanović, Nikola Jokić, Mario Hezonja, Dario Šarić and others didn't convince you to watch the game, I hope this story changes your mind.
Greetings from Belgrade, and may the best team win!
Edit: I didn't mention Argentina winning the Olympics in 2004 because I was speaking about a period before Yugoslavia broke up. (They threw us out of the group, so don't think I forgot about them.)
