Not Lebron either. Because Lebron is the best player in

the fact that it involves math you understand doesn't mean it's not analytics. the fact that it was invented by the grandfather of analytics means you don't get to separate it just cause you feel like it. you're cherry-picking what you like about analytics and discarding what you think is ineffective. that's a good thing, and you underestimate how many people do the same.

2544978, Exactly. "Analytics" isn't a thing.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Thu Jun-09-16 12:25 PM

Because truly speaking, "analytics" is batting average.
And points per game. And RBI. Anything with a number in
it is really "analytics."

The line is only drawn to make some people seem marketable
over others.

Want to not hire a perfectly qualified black candidate?

Say you were looking for someone more familiar with
"analytics."

Even if it's Sam Hinkie, and "analytics" simply means
"white privilege" that gives him the ability to legimately
throw entire seasons and be given the benefit of the doubt.

2545002, analytics is a thing because it involves stats people weren't using
Posted by pretentious username, Thu Jun-09-16 01:51 PM
it's as simple as that. some of those have held up upon closer inspection and some haven't. that's the nature of the beast. sports evolved by adding analytics to the toolbelt and now analytics continues to evolve as well. plus you've always acted like analytics people are using every analytics stat they're told to just because. they're not. they're doing exactly what you did: use what they like and discard what they don't.
2545006, The stats became advanced but technically he's right
Posted by SoulHonky, Thu Jun-09-16 02:02 PM
Batting average, on base percentage, etc. were analytics. People just realized that the more in-depth you look, the more you can glean from the stats.

Of course, people then starting relying too heavily on those and we were right back to the old saying, "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."
2545014, sure, but he wants to argue that analytics are useless
Posted by pretentious username, Thu Jun-09-16 02:07 PM
but in doing so he's cornered off stats he doesn't consider analytics that are. what makes them not analytics? you like them? meanwhile, everyone is already doing the same thing at this point: relying on what they find reliable and throwing out the rest. there was initially an overtrusting of anything labeled "analytics," but that's not really the case anymore. he's fighting a fake fight over a decade late.
2545018, I don't think he does.
Posted by SoulHonky, Thu Jun-09-16 02:12 PM
I've thought that his stance has been that they are overused. Which I agree, they are.

People cite this shit as the be all, end all when really they should be used to help improve the understanding of what you see in games.

But even if he does think that they are useless, I doubt you'll talk him out of it; especially in a post like this.
2545027, He conflates writers/nerds with front offices though
Posted by pretentious username, Thu Jun-09-16 02:31 PM
he goes on and on about how teams are hiring any and all analytics people regardless of qualifications, then as evidence he posts a bad 538 piece or something. Bad writing on analytics is in great supply but that's not very relevant to his point. I'm sure teams were making a lot of dumb hiring decisions in the early days of analytics being popular just like there are bad hires in the early days of any trend. We're not in the early days of analytics though, and I don't care how overrated Nate Silver is if that's not what he's trying to prove.

Posted by pretentious username, Thu Jun-09-16 03:24 PM
the problem is anytime analytics gets even partial credit for a team's win you find some way to explain your way out of it. So you get to chalk up the Hollingers of the world as Ls, but then a team with stars uses analytics to figure out their rotation/bench there's just NO way that could have been a factor, right? Nope, it must have just been the fact that they had a star and that's it. There's literally nothing else that matters. Never mind the fact that we've seen stars surrounded by trash a million times and it's never worked out.

i still question that (merely out of curiousity not to plea cop). he don't look the same. both he and kerr have said he's not all the way healthy.

but i will grant you that last night his head seemed somewhere else as well. kerr even asked him "are you okay?" on the bench and it wasn't about no knee.

the more i think about last night it didn't even seem that CLE played him THAT well defensively. he had some open looks and took a lot of shots he normally takes - and missed them.

he musta been thinkin about Roni Rose.
2544903, Even if he's hurt, Lebron comes out looking good.

Because people are shitting on Lebron's legendary
minutes accumulation as a non-accomplishment.

"7 Finals in a row? So?"

Playing in SEVEN NBA FINALS IN A ROW is actually one
of the greatest things you'll ever see, in any sport.

Why?

Because it fucking hurts to play basketball at a high
level for that long. People can't do it. It's not really
human.

Outside of the missed shots, he's been screwing up in other areas as well, as I've stated in another response in this thread. If the shoe were on the other foot and LeBron were struggling like Curry currently is, he'd certainly be getting fried right now. Klay was fried last year for his crappy Finals performances outside of when he played well in Game Two if memory serves me right, so it's only fair Steph get some flames put to him as well.

It's only right for a two time consecutive MVP to viewed critically when he doesn't play up to his high standard of play.

I'm calling shenanigans on you trying to throw out 2014, he still had Bosh + Wade could've been 100% and Spurs were still winning that series regardless. you don't get to throw it out just cuz you get beat by a better team (like what's gonna happen again this year). CLEVELAND -- Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr didn't get a vote on whether Stephen Curry would play in this summer's Rio Olympics, but he was relieved at Curry's choice to remove himself from consideration this week.

"I was not consulted. That's Steph's decision," Kerr said Tuesday. "As his coach, I'm pleased. He needs rest. two straight years going to the Finals. He's had injuries not only this year, but in the past. I think rest will serve him really well, but it's up to each individual player if he wants the experience or not."

Curry cited the need to rest his right knee after he suffered a sprain earlier in the playoffs. On Tuesday, Curry said he was aware of the threat of the Zika virus in Brazil but that it didn't affect his decision.

"I followed the reports and kind of got educated on , but at the end of the day that didn't have a bearing on my decision," Curry said. "It was assessing my body and knowing what it was going to take for me to finish this playoff run."

i brought up the Olympics because it's relevant re: Steph being injured right now.

i mean, i know this is OKS but you ain't gonna browbeat me to see your point of view.

he turned the ball over way too much, which even if your ignore the star that Steph is, dude is a starting point guard as well, so that makes it worse. Surprised Mark Jackson hasn't brought that up during the telecast light night; if he did and I missed it, my apologies.

In addition, this is the second game in a row Steph has screwed up his playing time because he's been in foul trouble. It's premature to fry Steph right now since it's only been three games, but Steph should be getting more criticism than he's been given.

Klay was getting flamed hard this time last year from what I remember, and he wasn't a two-time MVP.

2544947, I'm generally not interested in LeBron vs. Steph
Posted by Dr Claw, Thu Jun-09-16 11:06 AM
but I will say this:

people (including myself) were frying LeBron for a relatively toilet performance in the first half of game 3

whenever that issue was approached with Steph... there was almost immediately an injury comment

Cavs have played like butt against GSW (except last night)
but one thing that has endured is that the ones beating them are NOT Steph and NOT Klay

and generally if either one of them gets the frying pan... it's Klay (which is some BS. the "KlayQuil" narrative should have died a long time ago)

I mean. Unanimous MVP, when he's off the court -- Warriors are +10.

we don't need to talk about the Cavs when LeBron isn't out there

if you had an anti-Curry agenda now's the time to start cookin

2545000, Why is frying someone a good thing? Or required?
Posted by SoulHonky, Thu Jun-09-16 01:45 PM
People bitch about guys who get overlooked or underrated and it's partly because people love wasting time and focus knocking down the heroes they built up.

Curry's performance in the playoffs deserves attention (especially, if the Warriors lose) but being bothered that people weren't harsh enough about KD during the regular season just seems silly to me.

If you want to talk about how Anthony Davis had a shitty year, didn't seem plugged in at all times, and how that might affect his long term prospects in Nawlins or make it seem like the pressure is on the front office to give him a legit team around him, fine. But just frying guys for the sake of frying is just silly talk show bullshit to me.
2545017, If you think it's a waste of time, good for you.
Posted by Numba_33, Thu Jun-09-16 02:11 PM
I think it's interesting how some players get blame heaped on them (LeBron, Westbrook) while others stake from it (Curry, Durant). I'd like to hear Jones' take on why that is, if he has one. Just interesting to see how some seemingly great players are held to high standards while some aren't.

Lebron came in the league at 18 a number one pick. He could do anything in his career and none of it would be as unheralded as the success Curry has already had. There isn't a date you could pick where Curry was expected to do what he's done the last two years. And after the 2013 finals you had Lebron catching MJ lol.

Speaking of top 5 I think that suits Lebron just fine. The problem is we're on Lebron standard for success 5.0. He was gonna do it with Cleveland, then he got to Miami and it was time to win 7, 8 or 9 and then things became reasonable after German GOAT smacked a shrinking Lebron down to earth. Things were easier when Bron stans were reasonable, but after two back to back rings in his prime your imaginations ran wild with projections. Time to re-calibrate again.

No more for Lebron. Rings, MVPs nothing.

Unless he leaves again

If Curry sucks again and the Cavs even the series, the noise around Curry's performance will be deafening.

Lebron is #1 in the league, unsurprisingly.

But I guess we have some kind of excuse for that too.

Vex's point is this:

If Lebron was FOURTH on his TEAM in Win Shares, we'd
be shitting on him miserably EVEN IF THE CAVS WERE
AHEAD. Unquestionably.

Posted by dula dibiasi, Fri Jun-10-16 12:37 AM
of course he's not leading the team in total win shares. lulz wtf.

the warriors have played 20 playoff games.

steph's missed 6 of the 20 with injury.

of the 14 that he has played, he's been the team's best player in 10.

in those 14 games, he's 1st on the team in points, 1st in assists,
1st in steals, 1st in 3 ptrs, 1st in scoring efficiency, 3rd in rebounds...
and yes, 1st in win shares.

steph's team hasn't "indubitably carried him", or whatever
the fuck bruh said. over the course of these playoffs, when
curry's been on the court, he's been the team's best overall
player without question. are you disputing that?

Posted by Vex_id, Fri Jun-10-16 03:59 PM
Everyone here (including you) are citing Steph's playoff stats in the aggregate to reflect favorably upon his playoff run - which certainly is understandable.

And yet - the same people in here who are relying on the aggregate playoff stats for Curry *crucify* Bron for his 2011 Finals performance (18, 7, 7) - and understandably so - yet never do you hear them bring up his 2011 playoff stats in the *aggregate* - which were glittery as he was clearly dominant throughout the 2011 playoff run prior to the Finals.

So - since the point of my reply was to address the egregious double-standard at hand - let's try to preserve some semblance of reasonable objectivity when citing stats in the aggregate context.

when shit is going good... we dont hear a word but as soon as he misses 2 shots in a row its

"how hurt is he? whats wrong?.. its gotta be the knee"

from what i seen the Cavs are being physical with Curry and making him work on defense. Also, when a player lives by the 3 its much easier to die by the 3.

its sports, once you come back from injury we arent trying to hear that shit everytime he misses a shot, has a bad game or loses.

let Curry lose with dignity. We know he has an injury, constantly reminding us about it is some hoe shit.

now if you want to go with the "he's not injured, he's just been playing bad" narrative, stick with that.

if you want to go with the "I know he's injured, don't care - no excuses" narrative, then go with that instead.

but you can't claim that he's not injured one minute and then turn around and acknowledge that he is injured but you're just tired of hearing about it the next.

>and in the same breath go crazy over iggys defense on him.
2545157, right its somewhere in between. Lebron put up great numbers and igg
Posted by Cenario, Fri Jun-10-16 09:50 AM
made him work for everything.

But with jr as your number 2 making bron work extra hard to get his is all you need to do.
2545130, you guys know the Warriors are still up 2-1, right?
Posted by pretentious username, Fri Jun-10-16 08:14 AM
yes, Curry deserves to be criticized for playing poorly in a game they lost, but they're still up. Players don't often get fried when their team is leading a series. Bron would be getting a little shit, but not THAT much.
2545136, man, oe tryna fry steph for putting up 26,6 and 5 last finals lololz.
Posted by Cenario, Fri Jun-10-16 08:42 AM
2545140, seriously, he's acting like it's the worst Finals performance ever.

I was pointing out your "go against the grain no matter what the grain is" strategy

2013: "bron's getting too much love, I gotta remind them of a bad performance no one actually forgot about."

2016: "steph's getting too much love, I need to fry him and act like everyone else refuses to do so even though they're up and that doesn't make much sense."

WIN SHARES ARE GOD
2545226, Nah, you fucked up, and saved me in here. Thanks
Posted by Orbit_Established, Fri Jun-10-16 01:02 PM

You were overzealous and fucked up. You demonstrated how
I was much harder on Lebron James in 2011 than I am Steph
Curry

chances of GW winning the series are still high as fuck.

but Cleveland wins 1 game AT HOME and its "you have to wonder how hurt Curry is"

and its happened after every GW lpss since the injury. When they win and he his on, its all love and shit talking but when he is off... gotta be the knee"
2545176, pretty sure his posst was about the tone of this post with all the replies
Posted by Cenario, Fri Jun-10-16 11:05 AM
crapping on steph (OE) not about your initial silly video.
2545178, you gotta relax dude
Posted by pretentious username, Fri Jun-10-16 11:13 AM
we all understand your point by now. I was addressing others.
2545167, lol, Curry's doing better than those 3 in WS/48
Posted by pretentious username, Fri Jun-10-16 10:17 AM
Steph: .170
Draygoon: .167
Klay: .150
Iggy: .147

Curry is topped by 3 Warriors (Bogut, Varejao, Barbosa) in WS/48, but all of them are averaging less than 18 minutes a game.

Damn OE. You didn't think this through.
2545168, NOOOOPE!!! 4th best on his team...cry!
Posted by Cenario, Fri Jun-10-16 10:26 AM
2545169, I'll give OE credit, he has watched the finals
Posted by pretentious username, Fri Jun-10-16 10:28 AM
didn't watch a minute of basketball before that, but he has watched the finals.
2545224, You fucked up by highlighting how I'm consistent I am
Posted by Orbit_Established, Fri Jun-10-16 12:55 PM

That ruins the only beef anyone has
2545236, Was there consistency in 2013 when you was talking bout melo labrum?
Posted by Cenario, Fri Jun-10-16 01:26 PM
how does that fit in to Steph knee 2016?
2545238, nah dude, you fucked up by trumpeting WS
Posted by pretentious username, Fri Jun-10-16 01:29 PM
everyone knows you've fried Bron. I wasn't even trying to present it as news. Hence why that's in a reply to a reply.
2545255, You were sad, overreacted, and made me look good.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Fri Jun-10-16 02:39 PM

Just admit that you kind saved me. The whole problem with
me in here was that it looked like I was shitting on Steph
in favor of Lebron.

Turns out I'm a fair, lucid critique of great players who
don't play their best.
2545264, That'd be accurate if you proved your point well
Posted by pretentious username, Fri Jun-10-16 02:56 PM
But you didn't. You hooked your wagon to Win Shares as the be-all end-all, just like all the PER maniacs you cry about, and then got exposed.
2545629, Nah, you ruined the only good joke in here, joke man
Posted by Orbit_Established, Sat Jun-11-16 06:08 AM

I used to look like an irrational hater of Steph

Now I look like someone who pops shit when superstars
don't play well, which makes me a fair person

You fucked up
2548866, final win share tally?

2545204, I don't know what's worse
Posted by Numba_33, Fri Jun-10-16 11:58 AM
the sprawling mess this poast has become or Shumpert's hair choices during this Finals run.

Even worse is that a question I posted helped to spawn one of the many long tentacles this post has grown.
2545344, nobody remembers curry possibly injuring his left knee vs okc?
Posted by Reeq, Fri Jun-10-16 07:14 PM
in game 7.
https://twitter.com/mickakers/status/737468592849985537

people assume he been healthy since he lit up the blazers.

and he coulda been but maybe tweaked the other one later on.
or re-tweaked the same one.
(i think the houston one was the right knee tho)

i dont see anyone suggesting this for some reason.

Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Tue Jun-14-16 09:34 AM
2546590, Brons the GM/coach... and yes, it was a Hof status
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Jun-14-16 09:55 AM
He bathed in the Salts and rested Kyrie and himself for that 4th qtr shutdown.

they took Klay and Curry out of their game second half

also heard Bron requested the Tshirts.

2546604, oh so Bron's a capable GM/coach after all &dont need a HOF coach to win?
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Tue Jun-14-16 10:27 AM
interesting.
2546607, you asked about 1 game.
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Jun-14-16 10:30 AM
He still needs to stop playing coach/GM.

my original statement was a criticism of Lebron but y'all been in your feelings and can't see straight.

2546619, I replied to a post about it. But did Coach LBJ do a HOF job game 3 too?
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Tue Jun-14-16 10:58 AM
your original statement was an ostensible criticism of Lebron wrapped in an excuse about him not having a HOF coach. you can't even feign objectivity without getting all up in your feels about bron bron.

2546622, ostensible? do yall niggas always talk like this after an L?
