Really liked him in that point-forward role.

I think he and Beige Messiah are gonna make the Lakers fun to watch this season.

AMAZING flashes, on some Steve Nash type shit here and there. But it's gonna be rough, and an uphill battle early on. He's not purely athletic enough to just run with every PG, and he's not polished/experienced enough to outthink them just yet. But when he gets there, I think we have a winner.
2482545, I'm going to be real conflicted if I start liking the Lakers
Posted by GOMEZ, Fri Oct-09-15 11:45 AM
It probably won't be able to fully embrace them until Kobe retires (I'm a Sonics Fan in purgatory, so i still can't get behind Kobe - the hate is ingrained too deep). Big Ju, DRuss, Clarkson, and Nance might be fun to watch, though.
2482552, There's some intriguing potential here.
Posted by Cold Truth, Fri Oct-09-15 12:09 PM
I can't bring myself to go all in just yet. I'd rather hedge against disappointment than indulge in a few potential bragging rights points for calling it early.

I will say I really like all of our draft picks and believe that we have a shot making this team attractive for a big time free agent within the next three years at a minimum. Everyone is just so young and raw though.

IF Byron can manage to actually limit Kobe's minutes and Kobe actually embraces a reduced role so the kids can shine, we have a shot. I have confidence in Byron to stand his ground but I wouldn't exactly put my house on the line.

2482624, What I think makes us attractive is that we have a good amount of
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Fri Oct-09-15 05:28 PM
scorers that can create their own shots..especially JC, Randle, Williams, and even Swaggy on a good day. Yet, NONE of them are close to being superstars or even All-Stars just yet...so a Star could come in and go to work right away without fighting for the top-dog spot, at least once Kobe leaves.
2482637, Do they remind you of those early LakeShow teams?
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Fri Oct-09-15 07:48 PM
The teams with Del Harris as the coach and Van Exel, Eddie Jones, and Elden Campbell?

Those teams had potential and played well. Maybe overachieved, at least at first.

This year's team has a lot of promise and is raw, but if things break their way over the next year or so could be an elite player away from being a contender.
2489855, They kiiiiinda do....it's much, much different, though.
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Mon Nov-02-15 12:27 PM
I feel this team is only gonna win 30 games, but in 15-20 of those wins, we're gonna look GOOD...to where folks will say "we could be a playoff team if we played like that every night." But at the same time, most 30 win teams may actually look the same, I'm just not used to seeing the Lakers be this type of team.

Hell, most teams in the league who suck seem to have a few good players...barely any team just flat out sucks. The issue I've seen in the first three seems to be chemistry related, and as if the game just isn't flowing naturally. Way too many forced shots, defensive mistakes, and sloppy play that leads to turnovers. I'm a fan of Byron, but it might be an issue with his coaching style. He could be the type who's only a good coach when he has All-Star type players.
2482589, The kid has been working extremely hard and it shows

I know he can't get R.O.Y. cuz he played 10 mins or whatever last year, but does that mean All-Rookie team too?

2502704, What I love more than the production, is his response to adversity
Posted by LA2Philly, Wed Dec-16-15 09:17 PM
He had a couple bad games before Milwaukee and rather than hanging his head, he came out and worked even harder. His work ethic and mentality is top notch (Kobe commented on that from day 1 last year), and I cannot wait to see his continued growth and development. Once he develops that jumper (this next off-season) and gets more comfortable using his right hand, he's going to be a terror. His defensive effort will continue to improve naturally as he gains experience but the key is he can move very well laterally.

All the tools are there, what a steal at 7.

Vonleh also tried to test him earlier and Randle got a piece. That leaping quickness is what helps him a lot on the boards as well.
2512460, It also means he should be and can be a better shot blocker.
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sun Jan-24-16 06:01 PM
2512472, He certainly can and will be...his problem right now is:
Posted by LA2Philly, Sun Jan-24-16 06:08 PM
Defensive awareness and attention...which is natural for 98% of rookies. Still can't believe we got him at #7, this summer is going to be huge for him bc one he gets confidence in that jumper and in his right hand (had a nice hook with it last night) and the usual defensive focus that comes with time....will be a major contributor.

Like, anyone who saw him at UK knew what he should be. From my Justivity post:

"Your "worst case scenario" (injury stuff excepted) is a double-digit scorer who scraps for boards and works hard every minute he's on the court. He faced double teams all year long and still put up big numbers. Even if the length of NBA players bothers him at first, he's smart enough and hard working enough to figure out how to give you good stats and help you win games.

He's a safe pick (again, assuming healthy). May never be an All-Star (though I wouldn't be surprised if he made a team or two), but he will consistently give you double figure scoring, north of 6 boards per game right away, and endless amounts of hustle, with some sneaky upside that will go under the radar as his upside isn't as sexy as the more athletic studs in the top eight."

And later in that post:

"I don't see him as a perennial 20-10, personally... but if someone said they saw him putting up 18 and 10, I wouldn't argue against it. Especially the 10-- dude will unquestionably scrap for boards and get them."

He's absolutely trending in the direction of everything I said.
2576160, Pretty much. Same with JC. I doubt people are actually watching him.
Posted by Cold Truth, Fri Nov-11-16 11:31 PM
It's particularly easy to spot someone who just reads box scores where Clarkson is concerned. They can tell you how many points he scored but not how or when he scored them.

Same goes with Lou and Nick. Watching thosentwp alone has been a joy this year and if I had to pick one aspect of this team to help me explain how and why Luke has been a huge difference maker for this team, I'd point to them.

Lou has shined in spurts as a primary ball handler. He's been a willing distributor who has shown much more well rounded offensive tendencies in such a consistent basis I sometimes wonder how it's the same guy. Meanwhile Boxscore Bobby's Will dismiss his presence and significance to this team out of hand.

No player has seperated himself from the pack to shine as a singular star but we can send waves of guys who can do damage while one or two guys land enough glancing blows to make them a tough out.

People don't seem to be paying attention to the way we're winning the games we won or the positives present in the games we've lost to understand that our excitement goes beyond hovering at .500.

The team is showing real potential in Luke's system and anyone who watches them without an agenda would understand why Lakers fans are excited right now.
2576168, Nick used to show flashes of being a solid defender
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sat Nov-12-16 01:45 AM
but he'd always go back to clowning and chunkin up 3s...

he's matured overall so now he's showing the other parts of his game now more consistently...

and Lou....

I mean Lou is damn near the mvp of the team right now...he's the closer....the mariano rivera..... in the 2nd half he goes on stretches where he's either bringing us back from behind, or extending the lead..and he' playing good defense...

JC coming off he bench....I didn't like it at first but he's cool with it...he's getting great minutes...and he's producing for you on both ends...

Posted by LA2Philly, Wed Jan-24-18 12:50 PM
He's attacking with the paint when it's open, running hard and finishing in transition, working the boards on the weak-side, and switching in PnR.

When he's tasked with making multiple decisions - being the focal point in a 1/2 half-court-set, reading the defense, bringing the ball up in transition, multiple off ball switches and communication defensively - or spacing the floor, he is inconsistent.

He's a restricted FA so no team is going to give up assets for him now when they can potentially get him in the summer.
2639700, Every player is limited.
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Wed Jan-24-18 01:40 PM
Ju can score in the post, he can take his man off the dribble, and he can guard multiple positions.

If Ju has pieces around him and doesn’t feel the need to dribble the ball up and make something happen. That also leads itself to the coaches game plan.

That being said, from time to time he should be allowed to make plays. His game shouldnt be shackled and should be allowed to grow.

Some nights it's Randle, others its Ingram, and then others its Lonzo or KCP or Hart.

In the last four games Lakers have had 7, 7, 9, 6 players hit double figures. This is the position-less type basketball that the team has been striving for all season.
