2480794, Colege Football Saturday - 10/3/15

That fall weather kicking in. I'll be slumming with the remote in hand most of the day

2480800, Charlie Strong's chair is getting mighty warm
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Sat Oct-03-15 11:48 AM
It doesn't make sense how UT can be soooo bad.
They are basically the Texas HS all star team

2480804, on-field play aside
Posted by 3xKrazy, Sat Oct-03-15 12:04 PM
UT is currently ranked #56 in the rivals recruiting rankings which is kinda inconceivable.

im a big charlie strong fan but i don't know what argument can be made for him at this point.
2480813, Another special teams mistake today
Posted by calij81, Sat Oct-03-15 12:23 PM
I also like Charlie Strong but it is not looking good for him and Texas right now. They may only win 2-3 games the rest of the season.
2480815, it might just be a bad fit. i could see strong at the U
Posted by 3xKrazy, Sat Oct-03-15 12:35 PM
but i doubt miami would pony up the $$ to make that happen.

my pipe dream is that strong gets fired and he takes the DC gig at OSU once chris ash leaves after this season.
2480816, Mack Brown ran Texas into the ground and really didn't leave Charlie
Posted by calij81, Sat Oct-03-15 12:46 PM
with much to work with. I don't think fans realize how much of a rebuilding job that Charlie Strong inherited. That being said, even in down years Strong and Texas should be pulling in top 10 classes with ease.

Also, the special teams mistakes are on Strong and his staff, that is something Strong and staff can control and they haven't fixed that yet.
2480818, The boosters still like him. (We'll see after this loss.)
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Sat Oct-03-15 12:50 PM
For what it's worth, after the first loss, the team was competitive in two games against equal talent. (OKState and California) Texas has played much better than they did against ND, to Strong's credit, but the two recent losses, along with the performance of the offense in the first game, reflects poorly on the coaching staff.

Could he get fired? I dunno. It would seem silly to fire a coach after one mediocre year and one bad year given that he is being asked to rebuild the department. If Mack had left Texas as a Top 10-25 program, the firing would make sense, but Texas hasn't been relevant in at least five years. Letting Strong go now would set the program back at least another two to three years, so unless the new Texas AD can get a really big name, Strong is the best coach available.
2480838, if you think Texas is going to end up with the #56 recruiting class
Posted by J_Stew, Sat Oct-03-15 03:21 PM
I have some oceanfront property in Oklahoma to sell you.

yes or no

2480828, Our worse players on the field are upper classmen
Posted by MEAT, Sat Oct-03-15 02:11 PM
That being said, we have players tweeting at half time and facetiming
That's unacceptable.
If my lady wasn't doing her hair I'd have left the house a long time ago.
Last year they showed fight. I don't know what they're showing this year.
But this is disappointing.
2480841, lol. Dude re-tweeted about transferring during halftime

2480865, He's to be taken with a grain of salt
Posted by MEAT, Sat Oct-03-15 05:11 PM
During his recruitment he trolled the shit out of A&M. Like epically. Via Twitter.
So the content of his tweets isn't an issue because he's a known Twitter troll.
However the fact that he's tweeting during half time this week and facetiming last week.
That's a problem.
2480930, RE: He's to be taken with a grain of salt
Posted by THRILLHOUSE, Sun Oct-04-15 10:02 AM
yep. And Boyd basically retweets any tweet he's mentioned in. Definitely wouldn't read into anything he tweets, he just shouldn't be doing it during a game.
2480849, Even the Texas Rangers got in on the Fire Charlie bandwagon
Posted by THRILLHOUSE, Sat Oct-03-15 04:03 PM
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CQa9FOnWoAADceo.jpg

Guessing whatever intern handles the Rangers twitter account forgot to switch to his personal account.

I don't see Strong getting fired, especially since UT won't have a new AD in place until next year. Next year will probably be make or break though.
2480866, Rangers dude got fired.
Posted by MEAT, Sat Oct-03-15 05:15 PM
It'll take a lot for Charlie not to be back next year though. Texas just let their o line issue with OkST go to trial even those guys the issue couldve been settled out of court for less than 500k

To fire Charlie means they'd have to be willing to eat like 15 million.

Crazier things have happened. Black coaches have hotter seats. But for a lot of reasons it would be foolish to fire him. Money being a top one.

Why was Mauk suspended for the game? The press release said he broke team rules, but has there been any reason given by the school for the suspension?
2480822, He broke the team rule of not being a very good QB

2480836, nothing official, but he's a world class douche bag from what I understand..

and no stranger to Columbia PD. I think it was time to let Drew take over...not like Matt was lighting shit up. I won't front. I thought he was gonna be that dude when he replaced Franklin, but he plays scared as shit. Drew looks like a stud, but who really knows for sure.
2480877, ha... glad drew played well

i was done with mauk
2480898, I thought the same thing about Mauk.
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Sat Oct-03-15 08:52 PM
He has a big play quality that Franklin and even Gabbert didn't. It seemed over time that he would learn to be consistent and improve his accuracy. But he can't manage a game outside of the fourth quarter.
2480825, I've accepted the fact that we are getting Bowden'd
Posted by snacks, Sat Oct-03-15 01:41 PM
... by Beamer.

Not that we were on FSU's level before, but we are now at that point where we've gotten as far as we will ever get w/ Beamer, but he's done so much that we'll never actually fire him.

Our only hope is to lose to UVA and not make a bowl game this season.

We played like ass on offense the entire 1st half. Turnovers, penalties, mistakes & we still beat Maryland 28-0. I like that this team is learning on the fly but still executing well enough to smother teams..

we all have tirelessly heard the SEC get shit on for in conference battles, just want to remind some folks that Michigan St. survived by 3 against Purdue and im currently watching Indiana competing against Ohio State.

I hope you are all enjoying your Saturday. looking forward to the Fire Game, Ark @ Tennessee, because the head coach that loses will get fired.
2480868, cant speak for Sparty but IU is good (w a healthy Sudfeld and Howard)

This is a great game thus far
2480888, MSU and OSU look like crap
Posted by 3xKrazy, Sat Oct-03-15 08:24 PM
but it's not like there are some glaringly obvious replacements

im not so concerned with these polls anyway...certainly not at this early part of the season.
2480861, Braxton Miller still the best quarterback on this team.

jesus christ
2480890, can brax even pass out of the wildcat w/o his shoulder falling off?
Posted by 3xKrazy, Sat Oct-03-15 08:29 PM
would like to see that first...it could really be a nice weapon.

offense just is just in total disarray
2480940, he's not getting enough touches, at all. im pissed at beckman/warriner
Posted by guru0509, Sun Oct-04-15 10:31 AM
he should be getting direct snaps at least 4-6 times a game. i dont care who we're playing.

major side eye at the offensive playcalling so far this year by beckman/warriner

that corey smith injury is going to HURT. zach smith gotta be shitting bricks.

>would like to see that first...it could really be a nice
>weapon.

>offense just is just in total disarray

its awful to see. was it like this for every game after va tech?
2480956, Yes the Ohio State offense has been like this or worse since VT
Posted by calij81, Sun Oct-04-15 11:19 AM
2481134, the direct snaps to Brax are awful and predictable and go nowhere
Posted by 3xKrazy, Sun Oct-04-15 04:23 PM
that's why id like to see him pass it...give teams something to think about. i thought that was going to be the strategy from day 1.

the play calling has been a little bit strange at times but the bigger issue is the turnovers. i think OSU has had multiple turnover games dating back to Alabama and the fact that hit hasn't cost this team a victory yet is really quite amazing. but it will happen eventually. can't lose the turnover battle every single game and expect to go undefeated.
2481642, Two possibilities
Posted by osu_no_1, Tue Oct-06-15 07:12 AM
One is that his shoulder really is shot to the point that he shouldn't even attempt passing, it would be so bad. Or else he might injure it, and end up on the sidelines for the rest of the season.

The other that i suspect is that there are plays designed for him to throw but they are being saved for bigger games/bigger moments. Show that he always runs every time and you set up the big play action against Michigan or Mich state

Posted by will_5198, Sat Oct-03-15 10:45 PM
talk about the worst second half adjustments in the country. bringing DeBord out of his cave could be what gets Jones' fired.

looks like team and fanbase have tuned him out. the only thing that'll save him is to coach his way out of this debacle of a season, and based on what I've seen in three years, he doesn't have that in him.
2481025, he has to fire debord and call plays himself
Posted by cgonz00cc, Sun Oct-04-15 01:30 PM
Nothing good comes from giving mike deboring control of anything

Edit: yalls offense looks nothing like his offenses at CMU
2481161, it's his old boss
Posted by will_5198, Sun Oct-04-15 06:56 PM
kind of embarrassing but this is a mission critical decision. not sure who to blame for Dobbs' complete regression, and the fact Tennessee has a bunch of 6'2+, 200+, 4-stars at receiver but cannot break 160 passing yards a game is bewildering.
2481277, Josh Dobbs rushing stats....
Posted by Frank Mackey, Mon Oct-05-15 08:09 AM
Last week 136 yds
This week 7 yds

The only reason to have him in the game with his lack of passing ability is because of the run threat. If he's not going to run, put in QD. Can't watch this anymore.
2481628, it's shocking how ineffective he's been

Posted by will_5198, Sat Oct-03-15 11:00 PM
Helfrich has the same coordinator problem. he hired a bad one in Pellum. I read something last year where an opposing Pac-12 coach called their defensive scheme a joke, and how Arizona beat them running the same play over and over.
2481436, I think Frost is actually the bigger problem
Posted by sfMatt, Mon Oct-05-15 02:11 PM
He's demonstrated nothing since he's been here aside from getting WRs to block physically.

His recruiting has been garbage (first at WR, now at QB) and there's no evidence that he's done a good job developing the QBs - the bulk of Marcus' learning was under Helfrich.

I mean Pellum is probably a step down from Aliotti, but if our offense is still operating we probably don't worry nearly as much about that.

the B1G west is atrocious and will be for the foreseeable future

I guess Wisky will get a big lift when Clement comes back but when their offense doesn't feature a superstar RB they're in deep shit.

Posted by go mack, Mon Oct-05-15 02:41 PM
I do feel sorry for him. The Fire Mike Riley stuff from fans is too soon even with the horrible end of game time management and getting beat by Illinois. This team may not win 5 games tho... It would have struggled to get 7 with Bo tho as well imo
