Ronda is a world class athlete that's spent years training against men. She'd body pretty much all of us because THAT'S WHAT SHE DOES FOR A LIVING.

2469465, In debates like this, I always think of Patrick Davidson.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Aug-02-15 02:23 PM
Davidson was a dude who played for Duke, but rarely ever came off the bench. He was 6'1, limited athleticism, limited length. He mostly made the team, if I recall, because he was good friends with Luol in HS.

He'd go to the gym and play 21 against the dudes who played IM hoops at Duke on weekends during the offseason for fun.

Now, when Davidson came off the bench in games on TV, he looked like a fucking scrub. So every dude bigger, taller, longer, and more athletic than him wanted a piece.

And Davidson, to put it mildly, would dominate. He'd go against dudes who are 6'6, who had 40 pounds on him, and just crush them in every way-- including in the paint and on the boards.

The level of skill it takes to even be a bum in college ball... is insanely high. You have to play every day, train every day, be terrific every day... just to be a *bum.*

So whenever any dude who hasn't been fighting every day for the past several years says he can beat Rousey? You just have to laugh and shake your head.
2494501, but could he beat the The Marine ROTC though?

She's taken punches from men before because of a lack of female MMA training partners.

You guys are forgetting her conditioning. Everyone's maximum conditioning is less than one fourth of hers because she does this for a living. She spends Peyton Manning time training against far superior opponents so imagine what happens if she ever had to encounter one of us on the street.

2469530, MMA gyms have 2 MAYBE 3 female pro fighters
Posted by RobOne4, Mon Aug-03-15 01:58 AM
the women have to do everything with the men. They condition, roll, and spar with men. I have seen it first hand. They will light spar with guys out of their weight class. They will go all out against guys closer to their weight class.
2469534, so she only goes "all out" with 135lb dudes? Why is that? Could it be...

Posted by RobOne4, Mon Aug-03-15 10:43 PM
my older brother did. He is a year older than me but hasnt been taller than me since I was 4 years old. In school he was always the short one in class. We both got in a lot of fights when we lived in the hood. Then we moved to the burbs and people stopped testing me. But not him. In HS he was just angry all the time. My freshman year I was 6'3" and he was 5'3". We hated each other because he was constantly angry. He went to the army and grew 6 inches to average height at age 21. But he ended up getting discharged from the Army for fighting. He said he got into several fights with other soldiers and several off base. We talked about it not that long ago and he said he couldnt just walk away from fights like I can because of his size. He said you could walk away from fights and nobody will call you on it or try and test you later because you are weak. But me I had to fight or else they are going to try and fuck with me the next time and the next time. So basically I found out that being short is like being in prison.

a 125 lb professional boxer might as well be a heavyweight against a normal guy off the street. Both with their ability to take a punch and their ability to give out punishment. Size goes out the window when you have that much of a disparity in skill.

2469454, All respect to Ronda, but this is getting stupid.
Posted by RaFromQueens, Sun Aug-02-15 01:44 PM
You know what all combat sports need in order to exist? Weight limits. A large enough man could pose a problem for any fighter Ronda's size by virtue of size advantage. If there's a 6'5 300 pounder responding to this poll your options are moot.

Ronda is the GOAT woman fighter and is amazing to watch. The people who need to compare her to men are minimizing her achievements as much as the sexist idiots.
2469456, How many 6'5 fighters with 300 lbs of pure muscle are on OKS?
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Aug-02-15 01:55 PM
lol

Sure, professional male fighters who train constantly can probably beat Rousey. Of course.

But regular-ass, relatively-in-shape dudes with a size advantage over Rousey aren't fucking beating Rousey. Not even the pretty-athletic, practice-fighting-a-couple-times-a-month dudes with a size advantage.

Size advantage <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< training advantage, skill advantage, IQ advantage, etc.

Good enough for me. I started bjj but Ronda has rolled well vs guys much more skilled than me. I also know that a technical smaller bjj person whose better than me can easily roll through me now.
2469489, I'd have no desire to fight her(based on her skill not just gender)
Posted by J_Stew, Sun Aug-02-15 06:14 PM
like maybe she could kick my ass, maybe she couldn't. I've got 100 pounds on her that belong to someone that knows how to use them, much more power, and much quicker hands. The competitive male MMA fighters I have sparred with over the years have had a really hard time taking me down(Texas based guys in the 205, 185, and 170 pound classes that used me as an athletic and strong guy to beat on and try to throw around, all of which would definitely beat my ass, but these are top tier dudes).

I would be horrified to end up on the ground in any sort of scramble with her, something on me is definitely getting broken.

I'm a feminist so I'd find no shame whatsoever at possibly the toughest, most skilled woman in the world beating me at something that isn't my life's work.

2469494, See, this is how we know you know what you're talking about.

2469509, ty sir
Posted by J_Stew, Sun Aug-02-15 09:03 PM
anyone not d-end sized and athletic or a competitive level fighter should at least be non-dismissive about her being able to kick their ass, and most regular dudes would just simply get mopped by her. I'm pretty close to the top of the food chain when it comes to combat related stuff, but not quite at the top, and I wouldn't fancy a tussle with her at all.
2469529, she would fuck me up and I have 9 inches and 130 lbs on her
Posted by RobOne4, Mon Aug-03-15 01:55 AM
I have spent more time in an mma gym than 90% of the people on the boards. I have hit pads, I have rolled, and have done light sparring. She wouldnt KO me with one punch. But she would have me on my ass with a barrage of punches. I could probably last on the ground longer than most just because of my size and strength advantage. But I will be sucking wind while she is barely breaking a sweat. Can I punch harder than her? Yes. But she trains her body to take punishment every day. Me not so much. I get hit in the face a few times and I am definitely going to panic and do something stupid. The biggest part of fighting that people dont understand is training your body to take punishment. Learning to stay in the pocket and exchange trade when you are punched in the face. Learned to not turn away after being punched. Little by little your body is able to absorb more and more punishment. A good jab from most professional fighters would put the average man on their ass. I wont even get into reaction time. They have the muscle memory to fire off a counter to your punch before you have even landed it. They know to slip or duck your punch when your shoulder moves. They dont even have to think anymore. Their body just reacts.

tl;dr
people are full of shit and dont know what they are talking about.

I once played in a pick up game with a former UNC women's basketball player (no I don't remember her name, this was like 20 years ago). she had been out of college for a while. if I remember correctly she never went pro cuz she got hurt. anyway, she was the only female on the court with 9 other guys. she SMOKED us! she wasn't missing anything the whole time.

when we were in high school in the 90's (I grew up in Newport News) there was a girl named Lakeisha Frett who was like the top female in Virginia at the time. we used to play pick up ball with her all the time. she was NASTY on the court. she would embarrass fool regularly. she went on the play pro before the WNBA got started and then some early WNBA ball. she wasn't even elite in the pros and she was wreck us.

When I was frosh/soph in college, I used to play in a VERY competitive run at the Y. One or two former college athletes. One future college athlete, and a bunch of dudes who had been pretty good HS players.

One of the women who worked there was a former Olympian, and she'd play with us from time to time. While she had the best fundamental skills on the floor, her strength and athleticism put her in the bottom half of players out there.

EDIT: To clarify, this was the kind of run where 4-5 different guys might dunk in the same game. Not your standard YMCA.
2469584, I believe that college male players could beat a female player.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Aug-03-15 10:33 AM
That's what your story sounds like. Guys who played DI/DII.

I could believe that. Sure. They have the countless hours of training over the years, they have the knowledge of the game, *and* they have the size and strength. Sure. I'd buy that.

But that's obviously worlds away from what he said. I *am* the average dude at the Y, lol. And I've played against Duke college hoops women players before. And I, like the other bigger, stronger, faster dudes I would play with, got crushed by them.

To beat a player like Skylar, size and strength aren't remotely enough. Not by a longshot.
2469587, HS players routinely give female pros that work.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Aug-03-15 10:36 AM
see USWNT for example.
2469588, For basketball, you are wrong.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Aug-03-15 10:41 AM
I've played with female college players, I've played with WNBA players. I've played with DII male players on my team, I've played with dudes with size advantages who played in HS on my team. My experience may be anecdotal, but at least I'm not basing my posts on conjecture here.

I believe a top high school prospect with a DI college career ahead of him could. Sure. As I said, if you play DI ball, you're probably good enough fundamentally that your size and strength advantage would take over.

An average high school player, even one with size, wouldn't have a prayer, unless she was playing on a broken ankle or some shit.

I don't know anything about USWNT, but if they lost to a HS men's team, I'd be willing to guess that was a national HS team with the top HS players in the country. Which, again, isn't remotely the same argument that ThaTruth was making.

2469592, College players aren't remotely WNBA players, though.
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Aug-03-15 10:56 AM
There are, any given year, roughly 27,710 female college basketball players.
There are, any given year, 180 WNBA players.

You have to be in the top .6% of NCAAWBB to get to the WNBA. And, realistically, the percentage is smaller than that, because those 180 players are gathered from the best of college every year over a period of time. It's probably closer to, at any given time, .2-.3%.

And dude above said that the average guy at the Y can beat Skylar Diggins.
2469665, I played in a pickup game with a WNBA player before at the Y
Posted by LegacyNS, Mon Aug-03-15 07:01 PM
She could definitely play but she wasn't a standout.. she was just like any of the other guys playing in the game. That's not to say she wasn't more skilled overall in some areas but the difference in the athleticism negates a lot of that.

'Cause, ya know, it's the Y. They're not getting paid for it. So most play half speed and don't take it too seriously (lest they get injured over some dumb shit).

The last time I maliciously threw a punch at someone I was as a 13 y/o in 1994, and I knocked that dude the fuck out in one punch. I am sure that I have not lost my one-hitter-quitter power potential.

Therefore I postulate if I was able to sucker punch Rousey before she realizes we were even fighting, landing that shot in the perfect spot on her temple I stand like a 0.1375% chance of beating her. That or if I had some sort of malice weapon that I could keep her at a distance because if she gets within striking radius, it's curtains.

I think an even better fight clip to prove a point is the one of Roger Huerta knocking our a college football player in a brawl. Huerta fought in the UFC at 155. Good hands but not much else. Entertaining as shit. He probably walks around at 170. College football linebacker Rashad Bobino who weighed 230 lbs. Bobino is in a hell of a lot better shape than anyone in here claiming they can take Rousey. He is an ELITE athlete in a PHYSICAL sport. He got KO's by a guy who he outweighs by 60 lbs. Roger Huerta never even made a serious run at the belt. He strung together some entertaining wins and bounced from the UFC to chase the money and never won a belt in any organization. He is a middle of the road to bottom of the barrel fighter who beat the shit out of an elite athlete. Dont come at me with the he is a man and she is a woman bit. They both train the same amount of hours in the gym with the same sized men. She definitely doesnt have his stand up. But you definitely arent a 230 lb elite athlete.

2585724, I think she could take one from an OKP. Absolutely.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Dec-31-16 01:33 PM
I never argued that she'd beat professional boxers or whatever the peak cysage by others was. I was just always flabbergasted by dudes posting from home with chip crumbs on their bellies that they could beat up Rousey solely because she's a girl.

Even in her current state, if she was fighting anyone from OKP, with the exception of the one or two dudes that I know are constantly in training (who said above they wouldn't want to fight Rousey!), I'd bet on Rousey. I don't think that's some wild claim. I think that's betting on someone who trains professionally full-time over someone who doesn't. I think that's a safe-ass bet.
2585885, Given what we've seen from her chin in her past 2 fights...

This is absolutely a wild claim.

You have to admit though, it's a bit strange as a man to be proud to be able to beat a woman. I know this post is for shits and giggles and to kick Rousey while she's down, but the premise of having some sense of pride in winning a hypothetical fight with Ronda Rousey seems a bit odd to me.

I'm really just mad that he thinks dudes could just beat Skylar Diggins at basketball like it's nothing. I was kinda flabbergasted by the brazenness of just casually beating up a full-time fighter... but the basketball thing admittedly set me over the edge. Spoken like a guy who's literally never played against even a D1 college level player, much less a bonafide WNBA star.
