2411106, he sounds like a moron
Posted by cgonz00cc, Wed Jan-14-15 02:03 PM
2411116, why?
Posted by ThaAnthology, Wed Jan-14-15 02:19 PM
As I recall, if that rule had not been in place, they would not have won that game and perhaps Drew Bledsoe would have been put back as the starter. The Raidaz would have won ther SB that year.

The link didn't open at my j.o. but I remember when that bad call (that ain't a rule anymore) happened. Raidaz would have won.
2411122, because he won a Super Bowl MVP after that and won 2 more rings after that
Posted by cgonz00cc, Wed Jan-14-15 02:24 PM
Plus the tuck rule didnt give them any points.

They werent going back to Bledsoe either; they knew what they had
2411130, Key Word: After
Posted by ThaAnthology, Wed Jan-14-15 02:31 PM
my point was if they did not win the SB the first year, there may not have been a Tom Brady in that next year.
2411131, The Tuck Rule gave them a SB bro
Posted by ThaAnthology, Wed Jan-14-15 02:32 PM
and I am not as sold that Tom would have been the guy after that fumble.
2411134, lmao the Tuck rule gave them a first down in an AFC Divisional Game
Posted by cgonz00cc, Wed Jan-14-15 02:38 PM
One that they were losing

Incidentally after the play in question, they were STILL losing
2411136, What is your point?
Posted by cereffusion, Wed Jan-14-15 02:42 PM
The Raiders went into Foxboro and beat the Patriots in the snow.

Charles Woodson *won* the game with that sack and fumble.

You think that didn't play a role? You think the Raiders didn't make the plays they needed to win an NFL playoff game on the road in that weather?

Stop.
2411142, Raiders were cursed that point forward lol
Posted by Lach, Wed Jan-14-15 02:48 PM
2411161, apparently they needed more than 13 points, so no. they didnt.
Posted by cgonz00cc, Wed Jan-14-15 03:18 PM
Edit: and my point is that one incomplete pass only defines Tom Brady's career to idiots. Because he has a list of accomplishments that have nothing to do with the Tuck Rule. Even further, he still had more winning to do *after* the tuck rule. So anyone who boils his career down to that is a moron.
2411174, your "list" is all AFTER the tuck rule game though
Posted by ThaAnthology, Wed Jan-14-15 03:27 PM
and that is the point.
2411178, oh jesus christ
Posted by cgonz00cc, Wed Jan-14-15 03:30 PM
Please walk me through a realistic scenario where one playoff loss totally alters the trajectory of Brady's career
2411431, He wasn't the starter
Posted by John Forte, Thu Jan-15-15 10:23 AM
There's a very good chance Bledsoe would have gotten his job back if Brady lost that game.
2411434, there was a zero percent chance of that
Posted by cgonz00cc, Thu Jan-15-15 10:51 AM
Brady got hurt in the 2nd qtr of the AFCCG and Bledsoe came in and led them to a W

Brady started the SB anyways. If the team felt that Bledsoe was their best option he wouldnt have gone back to the bench.
2411502, ^ nailed it.
Posted by Brew, Thu Jan-15-15 02:20 PM
Mufuckers got some selective memories when it comes to agenda-fightin'.
2411139, Drew Bledsoe was NEVER going to be the starter again
Posted by Lach, Wed Jan-14-15 02:44 PM
Belichick's record with Bledsoe was 5-13. People forget quickly how much Belichick was being questioned after that first bad year and then starting the very next season 0-2.
2411167, Tom Brady is a really good quarterback
Posted by Y2Flound, Wed Jan-14-15 03:22 PM
We know who Kyle Orton is, we'd probably know who Tom Brady is.
2411410, lol

2411172, this is beyond dumb, What if Ray Lewis went to jail for 25 years
Posted by rjc27, Wed Jan-14-15 03:25 PM
so if Mo Lewis never hurt bledsoe then... if bill belichek never left the jets after 1 day...

what iffing to this level is insane, especially because he clearly would have kept starting and winning. I'm not sure his career changes one bit actually, he'd just have 1 less ring

@rob_starrk
2411183, If not for Trent Dilfer I would have no idea Ray Lewis was a linebacker

2411194, I wouldn't go all the way that far but....
Posted by Kira, Wed Jan-14-15 03:46 PM
....

They don't win that game so at the very least that's one Super Bowl victory on someone else's resume. The Raiders aren't as some people not me refer to them as, cursed so to speak. Spygate looks different later on as well. I'm not saying Tom Brady wouldn't be looked at as great but he's not referred to as better than Joe Montana without that game.
2411438, I was thinking the EXACT same thing

2411199, Lewis's DQ* rating is off the charts at this point.
Posted by Selassie I God, Wed Jan-14-15 03:56 PM
That's like saying no one would know Ray Lewis if he hadn't sold out his boys on a murder wrap.

* DQ = Douchebag Quotient = Great plays on field divided by (foul plays on field + Jackass statements off the field)
2411201, oh well, we know him now

2411203, its true Raiders were robbed.

2411209, Not exactly
Posted by Mack, Wed Jan-14-15 04:12 PM
but the tuck rule did give Brady the opportunity to make the plays needed to win the game and advance. He still had to make the plays though. The Raiders had the opportunity to stop him again. Can only play the cards you're dealt.
2411215, funny that Ray Lewis

when you combine regular season W/L, awards, stats, and number of post season wins. just sayin. If his production fell off a cliff you'd have a point but his record is 90-23 since 2007. 90-23. That's insane. Yeah no superbowl wins thanks to Eli. We know.

2411515, I understand Ray's point. That play birthed Brady...
Posted by Overqualified, Thu Jan-15-15 02:36 PM
Without the tuck rule (and Adam Vinatieri for that matter)- I seriously doubt we would know who Tom Brady is. Shit, Brady wasn't even Brady then.

http://www.boston.com/ae/theater_arts/exhibitionist/TOM-BRADY-PIC-1.jpg

He played okay during that '01 run as more or less a game manager, but was certainly no lock to come back the following year as a starter- if their season ends in their first playoff game. Drew Bledsoe probably comes back as the Pats starter, rather than heading to Dallas, and Brady is back on the bench... maybe eventually becoming a Matt Cassell or something... who knows.

But that tuck rule, and Brady's limited role at the time, and getting A LOT OF HELP (and luck) along the way, won a Superbowl, and then another one. Spygate may or may not have helped there, in two games that ONE play could have changed the outcome of.

The bottom line is this. Winning breeds confidence, and confidence breeds success... so Brady's initial success in the league was the combination of a perfect storm of events, and he GREW into the quarterback he is today. There are a ton of quarterbacks in my opinion who if put in Brady's situation, would have become the same quarterback.

We can debate it all day, but everything Ray said is dead on. Take away the tuck rule, the Patriots dynasty probably NEVER gets off the ground. And neither does Brady...
2411542, lol. perturbed much?

2411527, seriously guys, Bledsoe REALLY wasn't getting that job back
Posted by pretentious username, Thu Jan-15-15 02:50 PM
i was just gonna leave it at my short reply, but people are actually entertaining this which is pretty hilarious. let me give you the rundown of how it happened. i remember the QB controversy very well:

After a bunch of mediocrity with Bledsoe, Wonderboy comes in and sparks the team. They go 11-3 with him as starter, including a win streak to end the season, and get a bye. Even if we lose to the Raiders, he's getting that job. They might hang on to Bledsoe as insurance and have them compete in training camp, but there is ZERO chance they're just handing the keys back to Bledsoe, and about the same chance that Bledsoe keeps that job IF he gets it back. They had 2 chances to go back to Drew that season alone: when Bledsoe first came back (they were merely .500 at the time) and when Brady got injured in the AFC game (meaning they could've stuck with Bledsoe for the SB) and they didn't pull the trigger. That's not just random. You guys act like Bledsoe was spectacular in Buffalo or Dallas or the Pats wouldn't have struggled with him at the helm in 2002.
2411551, Belichick was 5-13 with Bledsoe lol
Posted by Lach, Thu Jan-15-15 03:41 PM
and probably would have lost his job if he stuck with Bledsoe if folk are honest. I remember those games. It was like night and day with Brady running the offense.
2411694, given where the franchise was, no reason not to stick with Brady
Posted by pretentious username, Fri Jan-16-15 02:11 AM
at least for the time being. they were pretty bad for a few years and then they magically get their first playoff berth in a while. they're not going back to the previous QB no matter who it is. i was there for the first game of the win streak which also happened to be the first week bledsoe was back. everyone was sold on brady over bledsoe except a small portion of the fanbase. you could feel it. not that the fanbase has anything to do with personnel decisions, but that's the way the tide was going. it was a no-brainer by the playoffs.
2411625, Thank you.
Posted by Brew, Thu Jan-15-15 07:50 PM
So much revisionist history and lies in Overqualified's post about Bledsoe (LOLOLOL) I didn't even know where to begin. But this is the answer. I also vividly remember this controversy and Bledsoe had NO chance of getting that job back. Motherfucker came in and WON THE GAME in Pittsburgh after the Snow Bowl and Belichick STILL started Brady on a bum leg. Thank god he did, too.

All the above comes from someone who was a HUGE Bledsoe fan growing up but his time was up.
2411695, same here.

Will always love Bledsoe and appreciate what he did for the franchise. He had some of the most exciting moments in Patriots' history in his early years. Motherfucker had Peyton Manning level talent at that time.

As a good friend of mine so eloquently put it once..."Bledsoe built Gillette Stadium. Brady decorated it"
2411628, Can you also dispel a myth that my friend keeps perpetuating?
Posted by Kira, Thu Jan-15-15 07:58 PM
Brady was drafted by the Patriots who needed a quarterback, correct? I know their roster had four quarterbacks on it but the team felt the need to draft Brady, right? In other words, the Pats drafted Brady because they needed him.
2411693, i don't remember the draft, but from what i understand
Posted by pretentious username, Fri Jan-16-15 02:04 AM
they thought of him as (potentially) the future, not just a back-up. obviously they weren't strong in that belief since he was taken in the 6th round. they were actually embarrassed that they didn't have him higher on their board given how he turned out.
2411760, thats Lloyd Carr's fault
Posted by cgonz00cc, Fri Jan-16-15 10:55 AM
That team was loaded and would have played for the National Championship had Brady not had to share time with Drew Henson.

Cost UM the State game and Illinois game.

Brady plays all year like he was supposed to and its FSU-UM for the national championship, and Brady is a 2-3 round pick.
2755900, Man In The Arena really put this to bed.
Posted by Sofian_Hadi, Thu Jan-20-22 08:11 AM
People forget Bledsoe was back well before the regular season was over and Belichick chose to stay with Brady. Bledsoe subbed in for Brady when he got injured early in the AFC Championship game and Belichick still went BACK to Brady for the SuperBowl. Bledsoe was not getting that job back, period.
2411661, All y'all can apologize now, too.

pretty much outing the Patriots along with Spagnuolo about how they KNEW the Patriots were STEALING signals so they changed all their signals in the last two weeks heading up to the superbowl.

Also check the 3rd quarter of the Eagles vs Patriots superbowl 39 and how they pretty much had the perfect play call for the eagles offense.

Guess who was on the coaching staff of the Eagles Spagnuolo.
