Just heard on MLB network the Dodgers are shopping Puig.

Yes, trade the only outfielder they have with any range and a reasonable contract so they can keep an easily replaceable manager who bungled the bullpen in the playoffs. That's definitely the way to win.
2377582, people woukd over pay for him. The mets for example nm

does it really matter?

I was hoping the Dodger would find a reason to promote Young Joc this season but it seems as long as Colletti is around, they're willing to punt defense up in the middle and in the outfield in general. There's always a chance a rookie won't hit so having someone who can slide there and field passably with a good bad in that case is definitely a plus.

I mean I admit I'm totally biased that my dream Dodger outfield next year is Kemp/Young Joc/Puig, and I could handle it if for some reason that's not it, but if the reason they break that up is some really stupid reason like they want to keep Mattingly or they want a middle reliever, I'll be pissed. If Puig could fetch them a young shortstop who could field and hit I'd see it, but I don't know who's out there.
2377652, that may be our OF next year...with Van Slyke getting run

really in a platoon with Joc..

honestly I would let Hanley go.... get rid of Crawford and Ethier.....

We should use Alex Guerrero at Short Stop....

and go out and get a vet 3B.... (Corey Saeger only played 38 games at AA last year...kind of wish they had moved him quicker)

or you could even use Arruburena at SS and move Guerrero to 3B...

going young like that will let us use the money we save on pitching...bullpen...starting depth..

2377653, By all accounts, Guerrero's glove is sub-par
Posted by LA2Philly, Tue Oct-14-14 12:12 AM
Putting him at SS or 3b wouldn't do much to shore up the defense, especially when it means not playing Uribe who is one of the best fielding 3b in the league.
2377654, Guerrero's glove isn't great....but
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Tue Oct-14-14 12:16 AM
I want him to play a season without his ear being bit off before I say he can't do something in the field...lol..

he'd be an upgrade over Hanley defensively

Right? I think that's worth a pass.

Cuban players sometimes can have weird development curves from the time they have to take off from competitive play during the defection-and-signing process.

Alexei Ramirez was kind of a mess with the glove before he was reliably excellent.
2377775, Arrubureana's nickname in Cuba was

Error--burena ....

now he's considered an excellent defender..

I'm willing to give Guerrero the benefit of the doubt with the upside of his bat...

that post season.

He really has great potential but his ego is getting in the way of his potential to develop. He's still pretty raw. It's really up to him. He'll either learn it or get jerked off for so many years and be like Manny and all your faults and holes in your game will be exposed more and more each year.

Because he played like shit too.

I wonder what your explanation is for that.

I'm honestly curious.

But who ever said he had an ego? And why do you automatically do the OKP thing and pick the best white player on the team to try and make a ooint..all you did is pull a Puig and have a bad at-bat like he did most of the playoffs.

Kershaw knows he fell apart in those innings.

Did Kershaw get pulled the second he fell apart? Yep. Did Puig? Yep.

Suck it up. Stop being the loser throwing the race card like the typical OKP. Do I look like i give a fuck?

2377777, Manny who? Manny Ramirez...one of the best all around hitters I've ever
Posted by bentagain, Tue Oct-14-14 10:46 AM
seen

that Manny was exposed how?

I gotta give a sideye to Donny and the pitching staff

last year, the Cards plunk Hanley on the first pitch he sees

= injured and out for the series

this year, they plunk Puig

...and the LAD do nothing...
2377785, I missed that....Manny is one of the great right hand hitters EVER.

And is #2 all-time greatest Red Sox player next to
Ted Williams

This dude outright shitting on Manny Ramirez

Disgusting

Yeah lots of people wish they can have as many accomplishments as Manny...but nobody wants any of the negative either. Which im hoping to see Puig avoid. I like both players. But if you asking me if Puig wants all of what Man Ram has had to offer..uhh no. Calm down Red Sox nation lol

2377815, 99.9% of players would/should be thrilled to turn out like Manny
Posted by DJR, Tue Oct-14-14 11:34 AM
He had a hall of fame caliber career.

Puig's a good player. He's only frustrating because the tools are there to be even better, and that can be said for a lot of young players. He's young, and his contract is cheap for his production now.....and would be a huge bargain if he improves and becomes the player many think he can.

I'd calm down and let him develop.
2377818, and the LAD have been hampered, IMO, by all of those huge contracts
Posted by bentagain, Tue Oct-14-14 11:40 AM
it wouldn't make any sense to trade away the one player that is playing above his contract

I'm sure they don't want to continue to have the highest payroll

and not win

but I don't see how trading Puig would change either of those things

2377842, you can add a few 9s to the end of that percentage
Posted by KosherSam, Tue Oct-14-14 12:17 PM
there are maybe 10-20 position players in the history of baseball who wouldn't trade their careers for Manny's
2377970, I'm going to guess it's more in the 50-100 range
Posted by Call It Anything, Tue Oct-14-14 06:32 PM
He's 63rd all-time in rWAR among position players. He won a World Series. He made over $200 million. He won a batting title. Led the league in HRs. Winning an MVP was probably the only big ticket item he missed. He helped break the curse in Boston, so extra points for that on the career.

On the flip side, there is the whole PED thing which might have spooked a couple of gruff guys along the way like Frank Thomas. He bounced around a little, so maybe some one city lifers like Ron Santo wouldn't trade it. Maybe all that money wouldn't have mattered to somebody like Jackie Robinson, who accomplished something culturally and historically monumental.

Just eyeballing the guys around him on the rWAR list, and doing some armchair psychologizing, I'll say conservatively that there are 50-100 players that wouldn't trade their career for Manny. BB-Ref has 16,431 players in their database since 1901.

So we can go with 99.994 - 99.997%
2377824, the only deal I'd be open to for Puig would be for
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Tue Oct-14-14 11:46 AM
Giancarlo Stanton..

there are a few win-win's in that deal..

Puig in Miami...

Giancarlo back home in LA..

we can pay Stanton....the Marlins can't..... but they could pay Puig..

I'd like that deal.
2377990, this shit could happen..giancarlo wants out me thinks
Posted by LAbeathustla, Tue Oct-14-14 08:07 PM
but they may snag him without trading puig
2377992, Ideally...if you could get him without trading Puig....
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Tue Oct-14-14 08:17 PM
that would be crazy.... and outfield of Stanton, Kemp and Puig is just sick..

I'd trade Joc Pederson and one of the pitching prospects for him....
2377869, Friedman Dodgers new President of Baseball Operations...
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Tue Oct-14-14 01:11 PM
wow..

they've given him the keys to the entire deal..

I like the move.... Colletti will remain as an advisor....but Friedman will now be able to hire a new GM...

I'm thinking Mattingly may be on the hotseat now too....

wonder what it would take to get Maddon..

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/story/_/id/11700813/los-angeles-dodgers-hire-ex-tampa-bay-rays-gm-andrew-friedman

The Los Angeles Dodgers will name Tampa Bay Rays general manager Andrew Friedman as their new president of baseball operations, sources told ESPN.

Ned Colletti, who has been the Dodgers general manager since 2005, will remain with the club in a new role as senior advisor to the president and CEO of the Dodgers, Stan Kasten.

Andrew Friedman
Andrew Friedman became the Tampa Bay GM in 2005 -- at the age of 28.

Sources said that Friedman, in his role as president of baseball operations, will have the ability to hire a general manager.

Landing the 37-year-old Friedman is a coup for the Dodgers. A handful of teams have tried unsuccessfully to poach the talented young executive with a Wall Street background, who piloted the small-market, budget-conscious Rays to six consecutive winning seasons and four playoff appearances after taking over in 2008.

This season, however, the Rays finished fourth in the American League East (77-85) after trading away ace left-hander David Price to the Detroit Tigers in order in order to get a return on the former Cy Young Award winner before he could leave as a free agent after next season.

In Los Angeles, where the Dodgers had the highest payroll in baseball last season and an ownership group that's shown a willingness to spend since purchasing the team for $2.15 billion in 2012, Friedman will have no such financial pressures to manage.

The Dodgers have won the National League West two consecutive years, but have twice lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in the playoffs -- first in the NLCS and this season in the NLDS.

This season's failure to advance out of the divisional series immediately began speculation that Colletti's job may be on the line. However, sources insist that the team's performance in the playoffs is not the reason the team pursued Friedman.

Kasten has long believed a strong farm system is the key to organizational success. It's how he and John Scheurholtz built the Atlanta Braves in the 1990s. And Friedman's strengths in player development and scouting dovetail perfectly with Kasten's vision.

Ironically, sources say the Dodgers' failed pursuit of a trade for Price this summer only heightened their admiration of Friedman. Said one source: "They always asked for the right prospects. Not just the guys everybody knows, either."

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly enters the second year of a three-year contract next season.
