http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/11666705/nik-stauskas-sacramento-kings-surprised-reaction-comments

Sacramento Kings rookie Nik Stauskas said he was surprised at the reaction to his comments following a preseason loss.

Following Sunday night's loss to the Toronto Raptors, the former Michigan star made a statement to the media that has rubbed some folks the wrong way.

"I understand that I'm a rookie and I'm white, so people are going to attack me at all times," he said. "Just coming out there in the game, I felt it right away."

Following Tuesday night's game, also against the Raptors, Stauskas tried to provide clarity for his words, but at the same time, he didn't back down from them.

"I was very surprised," Stauskas told Cowbell Kingdom. "People kind of took it too far with what I was trying to say. I wasn't trying to get anyone to feel sorry for me. I wasn't trying to be controversial or anything like that. I was just trying to keep it real."

"As a rookie in the NBA, you're going to get attacked on the court, you see that tonight," Stauskas continued. "People make a point to go at me. It has a lot to do with reputation and kind of stereotypes of what your game is. For me, I look at my reputation, people look at me and obviously, I'm not the best defender in the world, so people are going to make a point to go at me and try to attack me as much as they can. That's really what I was trying to say."

Stauskas stressed that he did not intend to spark any controversy with his comments.

"I've said stuff like that before and I don't take that back, because I'm not trying to offend anyone, I'm not trying to be controversial, I'm just saying that's just really how I feel," the rookie guard said.

"Some people may have a problem with it, some people may not, but if you've ever played the game of basketball, you understand that there's certain stereotypes and certain reputations that certain players have and based on that, people are going to play a certain way against you," Stauskas added.

The Kings drafted Stauskas with the No. 8 overall pick in this year's draft.

"The one thing that always bothered me when I played in the NBA was I really got irritated when they put a white guy on me. I didn't care who guarded me - red, yellow, black. I just didn't want a white guy guarding me, because it's disrespect to my game." - Larry Bird

What difference does it make how accomplished the player when it comes to those statements. Stauskas is not talking about what a great player he is, just how he feels when he steps on the court.

There was a pretty good bit in a book comparing the paths of Matt Maloney and Pooh Allen, who were in the same backcourt at Penn. Maloney said these things and much more when they talked to him.

All of that won't matter though, cuz he can ball. Nasty handle. Nasty taking it to the rack. And a crazy trigger.

I think the white American-born basketball player has not only lost their place in the NBA, but a lot of the white players themselves lack the confidence (imo) in their skills to be able to compete on an equal footing w/the best of the blk players...

I think they've silently conceded that the days of the white player being the league's BEST PLAYER, or in the conversation, is over, and that basketball, like boxing in regards to the heavyweight champion, is a "blk man's game."

I see good signs from this kid

2376168, he's not American either

I'm sure that helped out w/his competitiveness...
2376203, why do you think the European/South American dudes are better?
Posted by Nodima, Thu Oct-09-14 11:37 AM
like, I agree that they're better, but why is that? white kids are still all over college basketball, but most of the best of them are from Australia or Alaska (sure it's a state but you know what I mean) or somewhere in eastern Europe. And so few of the American-born players ever get drafted let alone make the leap to a rotation player. One of the most frequent explanations I hear is that white kids just don't have the incentive to play basketball all day and night long to avoid the struggles surrounding their lives and white kids are mostly not living in urban centers where a court of some kind if always nearby but there are plenty of super broke, super sad white kids too.

Posted by vee-lover, Thu Oct-09-14 03:05 PM
what he said is cuz of the PC world we live...look at how this has become a faux controversial story

In 2004, Bird made what was to me a pretty innocuous statement awhile back why the NBA has lost some of its white viewers...and he said because there were no white stars in the league...and ppl tried to make a big deal out of that.

This kid just addressed the elephant in the room when it comes to white ball players and the NBA - he just said what other white dudes think

You don't think there are GMs who are reluctant to pull the trigger on drafting white players high in the draft...just because they're white and the recent history of drafting white players in the lottery or the 1st round hasn't panned out for a lot of teams

I thought he was maybe the 3-4 option on the UM teams

I didn't really get why his name was being tossed around in the lottery

especially considering SAC drafted Jimmer

he'll be Jimmer 2.0 status soon

sounds like this is a pre-emptive plea cop for when he's playing overseas next year.

Wrong.

Think Klay Thompson/athletic Kyle Korver. Damn good player. Elite shooter and surprisingly athletic for his size (if you play him close he will blow by you for a dunk).

He also omitted the fact that he's an asshole on the court (he's not the hand the ball to the refs after a TD type), which would make a rookie of any race a target.

He was the undisputed first option for UM last year and he was able to get to them rim consistently against either Harrison twin or James Young in that Kentucky game

Also Jimmer is a 6'2 combo guard, Stauskas is a 6'6 pure 2 with a 3p% coming out that was 50 points higher against MUCH better competition

Just...no.

Nick Stauskas pointing out the perception, which has been reality on the court for four decades or so, would make more sense if Nick Stauskas was a dude with the game to buck that trend.

But he's not.

Since then the aforementioned Thunder Dan and Jeff Hornacek have been all-stars, if we are talking about Americans. You got Manu and Petrovic from overseas.

it looks like stauskas came in after klay was rolling, then he busted his eye a few times and they switched stauskas off of him.

klay gave everybody they put on him the business, just no missing.

2414770, He was guarding Klay as if he was LeBron
Posted by FILF, Sat Jan-24-15 03:06 PM
Klay made two wide open 3s on fast-breaks but McLemore (his initial primary defender) wasn't giving him much of an airspace in the half-court set. Then Stauskus checked in & it was obvious he had no clue how to check shooters as he didn't bother to get up on Klay when he had a chance to do so on multiple occasions. He actually had his hands directed at Klay's chest rather than his face b/c he was slow to react & Klay had already fired a shot before he knew what hit him.

It was only after Stauskus gave him a couple of clean looks that Klay started taking heat check shots even after McCallum switched on him. In real time it seemed like Stauskus was always in the picture when Klay was hitting a shot until he got checked out. It was after watching the replay I realized than McCallum had even switched on him intentionally & that Stauskus wasn't actually getting picked off. Even then if it was baseball Stauskus would be charged w/ all of Klay's point in the last 6 minutes of the 3rd quarter for his horrific one-on-one defense.
2414782, Wait, let me get this straight...
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Jan-24-15 04:22 PM
A rookie not known for his defensive prowess in the first place allowed an already-hot Klay Thompson, the second-best offensive talent at his position today, to make a few baskets in a row?

Someone call the town executioner, we need a public stoning and we need it NOW!
2414809, Bruh, it doesn't matter if Klay was 0-10 or 10-10 he played horrific D

>A rookie not known for his defensive prowess in the first
>place
Didn't Stauskus open his mouth about being stereotyped as a bad defender ONLY b/c he is white.........yeeaaaah!

>allowed an already-hot Klay Thompson make a few baskets
>in a row?
Bruh, did you watch the game? Klay was struggling in the 1st half & simply made two wide open 3s that he rarely misses just before Stauskus was subbed in but MacLamore wasn't giving him much of an air space in the half court sets.

Meanwhile Stauskas was giving Klay too much air space while Klay had the ball behind the 3 point line & actually stared him down before he fired a shot. Klay wasn't even using picks when Stauskas was initially guarding him, it was simply him standing at the top of the key & the ball ending up in his hands. How in the hell do you stand in a defensive stance inside the 3 point line while an elite shooter has the ball behind the 3 point line? At least have you hand up: "Hands down, man down!" (c) Mark Jackson. It wasn't like Klay was shooting fade away 3s w/ Stauskas all over him & contesting his shots. By the time McCallum switched on him the house was already on fire.

Their coach is also an idiot for not doubling Klay instead of getting beat by the same play 5 straight times when everyone in the arena knew who was getting the ball. The adjustment he made was switching McCallum on him when all Klay had to do was rub him off a screen & he would have already launched a shot before McCallum even has a chance to contest his shot. No switching, no help....once McCallum got bumped by a pick it was over. This was no different than how Sam Mitchell defended Kobe.

>Someone call the town executioner, we need a public stoning
>and we need it NOW!
Stauskas opened his mouth & got embarrassed. The fact he's a terrible defender has nothing to do w/ him being white.

2414812, Stauskas was the match that lit the house on fire
Posted by FILF, Sat Jan-24-15 07:29 PM
If McCallum didn't switch then it would have made no difference whatsoever, Stauskas would have continued to look dumbfounded while getting torched by the same fire he started. If you want to argue over whether he gave up 22 in 5 minutes or 9 in 1 minute then go ahead.
2414861, It's a rookie, not known for defense, coming in on a hot Klay.

Why is this an "up-worthy" moment? I think we're all just confused as to the point even without the embellishment, then when you stack the hyperbole on top of it..

Dude made a statement that's VERY relevant to what Klay did to him: "I'm a rookie and I'm white, so people are gonna attack me at all times"

If it wasn't for him being on the court & actually checking Klay when a record was set then I wouldn't even bother to up it but he was the first defender that Klay torched (McLemore wasn't even in the picture when Klay hit the back-to-back 3s b/c they both came off fastbreaks & he actually did a good job on him in the 1st half).

He has been getting weakside blocks all season long (5th on the team in blocks) while playing limited minutes (he's averaging 2.2 per 36 & 3.1 per 100 possession, he's tied w/ Tim in both metrics for the top spot on the team!)

He wasn't "out for a year or two", he was ballin' out last season w/ the Wiz when Pierce was injured: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWdbU-B7iVo
