2362542, So Thursday Night games are on BOTH CBS & NFL Network??
Posted by Ceej, Thu Aug-28-14 07:45 AM
Anyone know the thoughtprocess behind this?

Isnt making sense to me right now.
2362543, that's awesome...oh wait...only the first 8 weeks
Posted by CherNic, Thu Aug-28-14 07:51 AM
not sure.....that really doesn't make sense lol
2362556, I hate the very concept of Thursday night NFL
Posted by cgonz00cc, Thu Aug-28-14 08:34 AM
2362565, ^^^^
Posted by Dr Claw, Thu Aug-28-14 09:04 AM
2362571, agreed. i don't even like it for major college football.
Posted by veritas, Thu Aug-28-14 09:16 AM
save thursday for MACtion and the sun belt and whatnot.
2362682, oh I do. a lot. thats the reason for my hate
Posted by cgonz00cc, Thu Aug-28-14 12:42 PM
2362573, love it. helps the week go so much faster
Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Thu Aug-28-14 09:18 AM
2362578, Dug this aspect for a while too but the games usually aren't that good
Posted by jigga, Thu Aug-28-14 09:28 AM
2362580, any game is better than no game
Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Thu Aug-28-14 09:35 AM
the alternative is that shitty game gets not watched Sunday.
2362587, yup ppl complain about the matchups but it's a nice way for football
Posted by southphillyman, Thu Aug-28-14 09:46 AM
fans to get exposed to shitty teams they wouldn't watch on sunday
basically it's no way to hate on thursday night football imo
and if you're married or have friends those thursday night pub specials be hitting for something
2363525, That shitty game might better if it's played on Sunday w/ more rest
Posted by jigga, Sun Aug-31-14 08:37 PM
but point taken
2362683, thursdays are for college football
Posted by cgonz00cc, Thu Aug-28-14 12:43 PM
NFL trying to make Thursdays as bland as everything else they touch
2362577, not ok with it when it's my team, ok with it when it's anyone else.
Posted by Flash80, Thu Aug-28-14 09:27 AM
it's only a matter of time until the league puts a game on a tuesday or something.

oh but it's about the "fan experience"!
2362687, So tangent aside, having the games on both channels makes 0 sense right?
Posted by Ceej, Thu Aug-28-14 12:52 PM
2362697, Doesn't CBS have it the first half of the season
Posted by Marauder21, Thu Aug-28-14 01:16 PM
And NFLN the second half?
2362737, When I checked the schedule on ESPN they listed CBS/NFL
Posted by Ceej, Thu Aug-28-14 02:05 PM
If your scenario is the case then it all makes sense, but if they are simulcasting I'll need an explanation.
2362750, reply 1. still doesnt make sense tho
Posted by CherNic, Thu Aug-28-14 02:23 PM
2362760, I looked on the NFL's site, and that's how it looks on there
Posted by Marauder21, Thu Aug-28-14 02:44 PM
http://www.nfl.com/tnf

But maybe they are doing a simulcast.
2362763, Every game is on NFLN, first 8 on CBS also.......very strange (link)

2362765, Unless they're using CBS games as a way to entice people to
Posted by Marauder21, Thu Aug-28-14 02:51 PM
subscribe to NFLN?

I agree, this is dumb.
2362766, The entice angle thing would make sense if that was their mo
Posted by Ceej, Thu Aug-28-14 02:52 PM
but why would they risk splitting the viewership for the 1st half?
2362957, drug dealer strategy, get em hooked the first half of the season
Posted by Kungset, Fri Aug-29-14 11:00 AM
what else would you show on NFL Network if they still have rights to the game.. inside the nfl? might as well just show the game even if it's on CBS
2362963, I'm looking at this from a straight ratings standpoint
Posted by Ceej, Fri Aug-29-14 11:05 AM
and I just dont get it from CBS's side. You win a huge bid to get the games and you dont even have them exclusively?? Now, Im sure the NFL and CBS will not have any trouble makin the ad revenue they anticipate but the numbers will not be as big as they could be if they didnt show the game on NFLN the first 8 weeks.
2362965, you are right it makes zero sense
Posted by Kungset, Fri Aug-29-14 11:13 AM
i thought it made some sense at first but i underestimated nfl network subscribers.. like 70 million people already have it

i'm sure CBS's bid was made with that in mind, but it's still very weird
2362992, id guess CBS is getting subsidized for NFL Network splitting viewers
Posted by cgonz00cc, Fri Aug-29-14 12:33 PM
2363005, Wonder if that was the deal no matter what network got it
Posted by Ceej, Fri Aug-29-14 01:16 PM
2362734, everybody can't afford 'dem cables
Posted by Dstl1, Thu Aug-28-14 02:01 PM
.
2362739, But they all have CBS.......no one has NFLN and not CBS
Posted by Ceej, Thu Aug-28-14 02:05 PM
2362746, aren't there some cable providers that dont? Lol...I'm tryin, man
Posted by Dstl1, Thu Aug-28-14 02:20 PM
.
2362953, It is part of a joint programming deal. Inside the NFL...
Posted by Cornbread, Fri Aug-29-14 10:39 AM
will now be on NFL Network as well as Showtime.
2362955, That makes proper sense tho
Posted by Ceej, Fri Aug-29-14 10:41 AM
The games still dont.
2363027, Showtime and CBS are the same company (business case swipe)
Posted by Cornbread, Fri Aug-29-14 02:31 PM
CBS is gaining the right to show football during the week where even though they will not reach everyone (some will watch on NFL Network), they will clean up in ratings for those that don't have NFLN and will win the night and advertising sales without having to create additional programming. It also keeps it away from their competitors.

Makes a ton of sense to me.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/19/business/media/in-ratings-game-cbs-going-big-on-thursday-night-football.html?_r=0
2363031, Having the game also on NFLN does NOTHING for CBS
Posted by Ceej, Fri Aug-29-14 02:43 PM
Bringing inside the NFL over make sense because that will showcase Showtime, thus benefiting CBS. Of course CBS is going to win the night, that is not the issue here, the point is they would win BIGGER and drive prices up even more if EVERYONE that watches the game is watching on CBS.

If MNF was back to being on ABC there is no way they would simulcast on ESPN let alone a cable network they dont own.
2363470, I guess simulcast is better than nothing?
Posted by icecold21, Sun Aug-31-14 01:15 PM
NFL gets a bigger audience and they still have something to broadcast on NFLN besides repeats of shit no one will be watching anyway.
2363472, do you think cbs wants it this way?
Posted by sndesai1, Sun Aug-31-14 01:20 PM
i'm assuming the nfl didn't give them a choice when they were selling the rights
2363474, That's what I was wondering.
Posted by Ceej, Sun Aug-31-14 01:37 PM
>i'm assuming the nfl didn't give them a choice when they were
>selling the rights
2363034, The real loser here is Lexus
Posted by Ceej, Fri Aug-29-14 02:49 PM
Paying for the halftime show on both networks.

2371727, CBS has the potential ad revenue of $504 million...(swipe)
Posted by Cornbread, Thu Sep-25-14 05:29 PM
An average NFL game has 112 commercials per game. CBS can charge up to $500,000 for a 30 second commercial. CBS is broadcasting 9 Thursday night games. It is also a great lead in to any programming you want.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/cbs-leslie-moonves-wall-street-734916

Heading into the fall season, his 20th at CBS and 33rd in the business, Moonves had been feeling more bullish than usual. After all, he and his CBS Sports chairman, Sean McManus, had negotiated a $275 million deal for the rights to Thursday Night Football, which not only would provide the ultimate launchpad for new series but also could generate a hefty $500,000 for 30-second spots.
2371733, I thought these games were stupid until I woke up and had one this morning
Posted by Tiger Woods, Thu Sep-25-14 07:17 PM
"Fuck this work day...but tight at least the Skins are on."
2371738, So, is this the game post?
Posted by Ausar72, Thu Sep-25-14 07:38 PM

...

my thoughts,

peace.
2371810, another Thursday Night blowout.
