2323656, Pass The Fifth - MLB Talk 5/5 - 5/11
Posted by Call It Anything, Mon May-05-14 01:35 AM
Twenty percent of the season is in the books. Too early to draw definitive conclusions (last year the Giants were 19-12 on May 5th last year and went 57-74 the rest of the way) but a great point to bullshit.

The Brewers are the early surprise team of the year. Their starters have more Quality Starts than any team in baseball. The bullpen has a sub 3.00 ERA. And Carlos Gomez is as good at playing baseball as he is at making people mad. Now to see if they can weather Ryan Braun being hurt and the inevitable regression to the mean.

Meanwhile in the same division, the Pirates appear to be the early season disappointment despite Andrew McCutchen restating his claim for best player in the NL, or at least until Troy Tulowitzki ends up on the DL.

The AL East looks like another dog fight.

The Tigers are starting to separate themselves in the AL Central and that's without Miguel Cabrera shifting into gear.

Jose Abreu crushes baseballs
Dee Gordon runs fast
Jose Fernandez is hard to hit
2323809, Brewers are going to have a 2008 Diamondbacks' season
Posted by will_5198, Mon May-05-14 03:22 PM
every team in the NL East is over .500. Giancarlo Stanton is on pace for a million RBI. who the hell is Jesse Chavez.
2323818, Remember when Brandon Webb was the best pitcher in the NL?
Posted by Call It Anything, Mon May-05-14 03:37 PM
From 2003-2008 he had the best ground ball rate in all of baseball and was an absolute work horse. Came out of the game on Opening Day in 2009 and then never came back.
2323823, fucked up part is *nobody* ever brings him up anymore
Posted by will_5198, Mon May-05-14 03:51 PM
he's a trivia question: name that Cy Young winner / which pitchers have had the longest scoreless streaks in the last 25 years?
2325677, i bring him up cause he starts on my MLB 2k11 team!
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Fri May-09-14 11:25 AM
2323812, The AL Central is just bad
Posted by Ceej, Mon May-05-14 03:26 PM
The Tigers are not good enough to be pulling away from a division yet that is exactly what they are doing.

And if Hanrahan has anything left and we add a bat.........
2323821, That Kinsler deal is looking phenomenal right now
Posted by Call It Anything, Mon May-05-14 03:42 PM
2323876, Him & Rajai have changed the whole philosophy of this team
Posted by Ceej, Mon May-05-14 07:57 PM
I love that Kinsler hates Texas too
2324015, Ausmus have any part in that?
Posted by Call It Anything, Tue May-06-14 12:02 AM
Haven't really watched the Tigers yet this season so I have not been able to form any opinion of him as a manager, but I always liked him as a player.
2324037, Hes done dumb things that Leyland used to do
Posted by Ceej, Tue May-06-14 07:22 AM
But being able to go 1st to home, the ability to let runners take off was never at Leylands disposal. Dirks getting hurt has been a blessing in disguise early on as Rajai has been extraordinary the first month. It is very nice to be able to get the leadoff man on and put immediate pressure on the starter. Teams have done it to us for years.

Ausmus really hasnt made too many pitching staff blunders aside from CONTINUING to bring in Phil Coke. But when you dont have any lefties to use what can he do?
2324701, no jinxo but Rajai's playing like an all star
Posted by cgonz00cc, Wed May-07-14 01:37 PM
2324141, Wow, I seriously had no idea Rajai Davis was still in the league
Posted by mrhood75, Tue May-06-14 12:10 PM
And he's hitting .337? Good for him.
2325679, id hate a place too where i fucked up team chemistry
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Fri May-09-14 11:26 AM
then blamed everyone else for the chemistry problems smh

im glad hes doing well in detroit. ill take choo over him every day of the week
2325681, What was he mad about?
Posted by Ceej, Fri May-09-14 11:29 AM
2324162, So bad the Twins are in second
Posted by Walleye, Tue May-06-14 12:39 PM
Seriously. That's an awful division.
2323822, I don't know why people are surprised by the Pirates
Posted by Y2Flound, Mon May-05-14 03:50 PM
Cutch is one of the best players in the league, but basically the entire roster had a career year last year and then they made no steps to improve this year.

Had 1 year flash written all over it.
2324005, There was some upside to be had among the regression
Posted by Call It Anything, Mon May-05-14 11:34 PM
Gerrit Cole will still probably be very good at some point. Edinson Volquez flashed a little something last season that he could have built on. Gregory Polanco is going to be a stud.

But yeah, it hasn't come together. It has to get a little better though. As a team, Pirates shortstops are hitting .160/.217/.198. For reference, Cardinals pitchers are hitting .175/.224/.254 this year.
2324049, Yordano throws really fast
Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Tue May-06-14 08:10 AM
CalltheGyorkstore is already a stupid nickname/hashtag

Melky seems to hit much better without a tumor in his lower back

Charlie Blackmon hasn't done his Tuffy Rhodes impersonation, he's still hitting

Tampa is going to take Toronto's place and lose all their starting pitching this year

Rivera St. is a thing.
2324104, Buster Olney says it's because he's a cheating bank robber though
Posted by Call It Anything, Tue May-06-14 10:55 AM
>Melky seems to hit much better without a tumor in his lower
>back
2324391, Well it is a contract year
Posted by DeepAztheRoot, Tue May-06-14 08:20 PM
but anyone who watched how he moved in the OF last year vs. this year....wouldn't even be a question
2324148, I'm still cautious on the Brewers
Posted by cantball, Tue May-06-14 12:18 PM
Gallardo has been better than he's been in 3 years,Lohse is awesome but he is old,and K-Rod still hasn't given up a run, which can't last.

But Wily Peralta looks to be s stud, the offense hasn't really done anything yet(Aramis is 2-his last 38,Braun can't feel is right thumb, they're still playing Rickie Weeks,Segura is just now starting to come around).

Gomez and Lucroy have been the only real solid spots for what should be a really good offense.

2324378, Samardzija's gonna get a win one of these days
Posted by Poorspellir, Tue May-06-14 08:03 PM
He and Rizzo have been terrific.

Everyone else, not so much. Hopefully I don't have to see any more Darwin Barney at-bats this year.

Rizzo is putting up great numbers and with the way Samardzija is pitching, the Cubs should get some really good prospects when they trade him.
2324454, Pirates with the first ever walk off challenge win
Posted by Y2Flound, Tue May-06-14 09:48 PM
2324519, congrats!!!
Posted by Ceej, Wed May-07-14 08:09 AM
cant wait for that to happen in a playoff series
2324538, If it's the right call it's the right call
Posted by Y2Flound, Wed May-07-14 08:54 AM
It's pretty weird to end a game that way but I'd rather see a playoff game given to the actual winner than won by a mistake made by someone not on a team.
2324545, Oh I agree, that wasnt an anti replay reply
Posted by Ceej, Wed May-07-14 09:03 AM
I just cant wait to see the other side outrage.
2324706, Davey Dom done did it again!
Posted by cgonz00cc, Wed May-07-14 01:46 PM
granted it was the AAAstros, but Robbie Ray can hurl AND Porcello has taken a step.

Prince is doing nothing in Texas and Kinsler's unlucky looking BABIP suggests even more good things to come

Rajai ballin. flat out.

he's stacking W's right now and after the draft i imagine he will make his pitch to Drew.

2324716, speaking of BABIP
Posted by will_5198, Wed May-07-14 02:24 PM
>Rajai ballin. flat out.

Davis is usually good for one hot month per season...he's still swinging at anything (worse than his career average in walk and strikeout rate) and riding that .400+ BABIP.

regardless, he's already made his return on the investment even if he doesn't do much from here on out.
2324734, Exactly. He was supposed to platoon.
Posted by Ceej, Wed May-07-14 02:46 PM

>regardless, he's already made his return on the investment
>even if he doesn't do much from here on out.
2324735, Leyland never had a lead like this in May
Posted by Ceej, Wed May-07-14 02:47 PM
DO with that what you will.
2325586, Our defense and pen is such a damn mess
Posted by LA2Philly, Fri May-09-14 01:41 AM
There is so much pressure on the starters because of all the unearned runners and runs combined with the pen not being able to maintain or hold. Three consecutive walks in the 10th tonight followed by a sac fly (deep on the warning track, just missed being a grand slam) and then a single to plate another. The amount of games we have given away is getting ridiculous.
2325597, Nolan Arenado
Posted by Ceej, Fri May-09-14 07:39 AM
discuss
2325672, His defense has really impressed me
Posted by Call It Anything, Fri May-09-14 11:17 AM
He's looking like a poor man's Manny Machado.

Streaks are fun. He's only hitting .360 over those 28 games. He's got a few things in his favor. He plays for Colorado, which means a bump in the offensive environment. The Rockies are hitting the hell out of the ball and he's hitting second in the line-up. Giving him opportunities like on 4/25 when he picked up his hit in the 11th inning in his 5th AB. He doesn't strike out a ton and walks even less.

If Dan Uggla can string together a 33 game hit streak, sky's the limit for Arenado.
2325682, I hope he runs that to 55 so we can see him get BB'd 4x in gm 56
Posted by cgonz00cc, Fri May-09-14 11:30 AM
2325920, damn, yu-
Posted by kinetic94761180, Fri May-09-14 10:20 PM
second no-hitter broken up after 8⅔
2325922, Does this mean he didn't have enough of that TWTW?
Posted by j0510, Fri May-09-14 10:36 PM
Ortiz just wanted a hit more than Darvish wanted the no-hitter?
2325936, He's on that Dave Stieb
Posted by Call It Anything, Fri May-09-14 11:09 PM
2326000, Troy Tulowitzki is very good at baseball
