2318180, I was wondering how the hell Tom Brokaw got involved in this
Posted by Bombastic, Wed Apr-23-14 12:14 PM
then reminded myself that the first time I actually saw Allen Iverson speak on camera it was in an orange jumpsuit with Tom Brokaw while in prison at 17.

Anyway, I'm in, this year's Tribeca Film Fest flick that I wanna see second-most besides "Time Is Illmatic" (which actually looks incredible while this one seems farily standard-issue).

Hopefully they both become leaked to the web, available for sale/rental on Amazon/iTunes/NetFlix or get shown somewhere in L.A. soon.
2318182, I went to the Opening Night Party.....

to my dismay the only thing served were Jack Daniels appetizer samplers.
2318199, Way, way too soon. These documentaries are out of hand.

used to be that you needed a ton of money to get the good equipment to make a cinematic-looking documentary. Then you needed connections to get it shown anywhere, unless it happened to be spectacular on its own merit.

As technology has improved, you can make something that can be shown on a 40 foot screen with a camera that costs less than 2 grand. Combine that with Youtube/Vimeo and Kickstarter funding, and suddenly everyone's a documentarian.
2318261, Its basically opportunism/narcissism acting like art
Posted by Orbit_Established, Wed Apr-23-14 04:07 PM

I'm not really mad

But I'm not gonna call it anything else either

This is the lesser of the two evils, but it is an evil

2318266, isn't there already a Kobe doc coming on Showtime soon??
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Wed Apr-23-14 04:45 PM

as much as the LakerHaterNation is hoping and praying for this to be the end.... again...they'll be dissapointed
2318312, by chapters, you mean postcript (or denouement, since you are in L.A.)
Posted by Castro, Wed Apr-23-14 08:14 PM

2451924, GOAT got SPIKE LEE to shoot a documentary on him.....
Posted by Kira, Tue Jun-02-15 12:24 AM

This AI documentary ain't touching THIS:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Chi8zcJUib4

*waves a fist full of rings for you haters.*

FIVE.... NOT WINGS, NOT 5 MILLION ON BOTTLE SERVICE, NOT 5 TIMES SHOWING UP TO PRACTICE SOBER BUT FIVE RINGS.

OH AND GOAT HAS ANOTHER DOCUMENTARY AS WELL.

By the way Kobe already did something meaningful this season...
2451928, Something meaningful=shooting your team out of games for milestones
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Tue Jun-02-15 01:24 AM
you can point out the rings, the other difference between kobe and ai is that ai went to jail whereas kobe should have.

meanwhile tim duncan and lebron still ruling the nba, so ...
2452051, OH? PLEASE TELL ME MORE ABOUT HOW KOBE SHOULD BE IN JAIL.....

Lebron is younger and his mileage far surpasses Kobe at the same age. Seriously, go dig up the minutes comparisons between them and realize you're cysing Lebron. How is Tim Duncan ruling the NBA? Tim Duncan is not a shooting guard so this comparison always fails. You need to pray to the reach gods to give you a better shooting guard to use as an example because you fucking suck at this.
2451929, I watched this and of course I would echo what Bomb said

Nuthin new, nuthin new, y'all aint sayin nuthin new (c) thought.

There was maybe a clarification or two but overall no new details. Some of the peripheral people (Reebok VP, prison guard, his friends) were somewhat interesting.

It seemed like the producers were trying to reinforce the point that he didn't hate white people for some reason, which I thought was odd.

It was cool to re-live some of the great moments of his career. It was light on Georgetown stuff to me. At some point they started yaddah-yaddah-yaddah-ing events, but they spent a while on the well-known turning points of his career. That's more of a decision than a good or bad thing, but the parts about his youth were more gripping than the parts about him as a national celebrity.

I thought their examination of the PRACTICE!?! presser was pretty good, that's one part that they took a while on and justified their decision.

Parts of it were a little cliched but it didn't detract from sadness of the distrust of his youth and then the uplifting aspects (but also bittersweet) of the success he enjoyed later.
2451939, didnt think it was that good tbh.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Tue Jun-02-15 07:54 AM
there's nothing new you could tell us about AI's career though. maybe his post-bball life will be interesting.
2452033, this the same thing that was on showtime?
Posted by KiloMcG, Tue Jun-02-15 01:39 PM
i haven't seen that yet, but from what i heard it didn't offer anything new that the 3030 didn't cover.

but maybe this is something else.
2452038, i think so. all the stuff in the description was in the one i saw.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Tue Jun-02-15 01:42 PM
2452045, they salvaged it a little by focusing on his youth but yeah, kinda dull
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Tue Jun-02-15 01:54 PM
but also we have to realize that the audience is not hardcore fans and may or may not people who lived through his stardom. overall it gave a pretty comprehensive picture of his life until recently and did what it could with what was available to the filmmakers. i think it was OK, wouldnt hate on it, it was what it was on its face.
2452060, Outside of the jail, he's probably not that interesting enough for a doc
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Tue Jun-02-15 02:41 PM
That's probably why it fell flat. He had nothing to say, beside "I'm gonna do this my way." blah blah blah.

Not everybody needs a documentary.

Same reason why I see a lot of them joints on Netflix (Steven Nash, Amare, Dwight) and pass.
2452211, lol cmon man he is much more newsworthy than d12 or amare
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Wed Jun-03-15 01:54 AM
i mean the whole cultural impact angle is there, too. if anything i feel like the reason it didnt pop was that his story has been done to death already, which doesnt happen to boring stories. i mean i am not saying is the most noteworthy subject, but it's hardly surprising that they made this and it probably won't be the last time.
2452248, Even the cultural impact angle seems like a blip on history.
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Wed Jun-03-15 09:30 AM
He lead people down the path of getting tattoos, dressing horribly to games, and getting cornrows for about 4 years.

You can only get about 5 mins of a documentary to make that interesting.

The climax of his story is winning the MVP, leading a team to the Finals, and winning a game.

After he steps of Lue, there's not much else that's interesting.

Professionally? No. Never contended again.

Personally? There doesn't seem to be more to him than a guy with some small run-ins with the law and family stuff.

But the jail storyline was great. The 30 for 30 killed it.

For example, I watched the Dominique SEC Story twice. Never knew of that story, and it was interesting to see how it impacted his life. But after that, not much else to Nique. Iverson is the same way.
