2313052, I'm torn on Cesaro
Posted by adam, Sun Apr-06-14 05:38 PM
I'm ready for him to get a big singles push. However, he and Swagger have the best looking tag team offense right now of any team. They wreck dudes together.

Also, Cesaro was on Grantland's Cheap Heat podcast the other day, and he seemed like a good dude. He was pretty funny, too. I didn't really know anything about him or his life pre-wrestling, so that stuff was fun to hear about. Hope he's around a long time.

I'm not torn at all. I'm pretty confident that he's dope with an outrageously awesome offense. And I know he can go. It'll be fun if they let him go.

That shit was so awesome that folks don't even care about the Shield doing all of their normal stuff. Double triple power bomb!? I'm cool with that.

And now...we get a damn...

Told a story really well, and both of those dudes can go in the ring, obviously. They both came out looking good.

What would be really great is if this plays out some more. A Cena unsure of himself and getting super violent during matches would be awesome to watch for at least a little while. I'm really interested to see where both of these guys go from here.

It really was executed well. But I can't get over Brock not going with the 'I'm gonna kill this guy' approach and just doing it better than HHH did cuz he's bigger and stronger. A few F5s is certainly SOMETHING but c'mon...this is THE STREAK! Kill this old mofo. Give me an arm break. Give me an F5 onto/into the barrier, apron, and/or ring post. Give me something other than a few reversals and gut punches. Oh well...let's go, main event!

I guess Bryan opens the show, but at some point, I hope they give Heyman like an hour to just talk his shit. It's going to be glorious. I don't know how long Brock's sticking around, but if they build to Bryan-Brock for SummerSlam, I'd be so on board.

Wyatt winning would've made more sense. Lesnar winning makes no sense. Cesaro winning is great. Usos and AJ retaining is fine by me (great tag match, and the divas contest was a predictable mess of telegraphed spots). Shield wins, though the squash was strange (they got less than half the time the Divas match got).

I still haven't processed the Taker loss. Like, it must have been an accident.

I do not agree with the decision to end the streak, btw. This has to be Taker's swan song, why else would he lose... and to be real, the match wasn't good to begin with...

Also, where does this leave Sting?

Everything else was cool

And was it just me, or was the director missing a lot of shots in the main event? I counted at least 3 times where he missed Daniel Bryan coming from out of nowhere to attack Batista and Orton

I also wish they would stop selling Bryan as a plucky little miracle worker

I blame Brock for the match honestly. Sure, taker might have some physical limitations as a 50-year old part-timer, but dude basically did 3 f5s and two Germans the whole match.

Sting is fucked now. Well...at least kinda. Him showing up to attack the streak books itself. Anything else is gonna require some work. And now it is fair for us all to be afraid that both guys are toast in the ring so there's that issues. Think wcw hogan vs warrior but not quite as bad cuz of the obvious spots they'd do that would work.

I can't call it on the camera. As for db, it's obvious that all of the wresting nerds on wwe's staff wanted to combine several underdog victories from the past and lump them together for db's night. Having him work two matches with an injury that he looked to be legit protecting was work of geniuses to me. HHH showed more ass than Prince in them ass-out joints. Dude did his part. Steph nailed shit as the heel manager too. Her commentary was better and more honest-sounding than Cole and them. And yes...even Boo and Randy did their part to play the 'fuck this guy, I want to win too' roles. The crowd was ready to riot on a couple of those non-db near falls. Mission accomplished!

I'm just glad that the wwe knew they had to give it to him. And they viewed it as their mission to create as much doubt as possible. That's wrestling 101 shit right there.

2313239, Sting - Taker would be HORRIBLE now.
Posted by magilla vanilla, Mon Apr-07-14 08:05 AM
The time for that was like 10 years ago at the latest, when Sting could still believably "out-quick" Taker.

(I also fail to see the hype of Sting. He got the benefit of having really great heels like Flair, Vader and the NWO to bounce off of- but dude is ATROCIOUS on the stick.)
2313264, I wonder how long Taker's been in this shape
Posted by Tiger Woods, Mon Apr-07-14 10:17 AM
I mean in the Hunter matches Taker just took an incredibly entertaining ass kicking for 30 minutes, and in the Punk match Punk bounced around almost as well as Ziggler. Last night against Lesnar, someone not as ring-smart as Hunter or as believably nimble as Punk, Taker's limited mobility was really present. It was a shame, and part of me wonders whether the match actually blew ON PURPOSE, so as to really make the finish that much more believable.

There's a shoot interview I've watched probably 3 times before of Taker during his biker phase on TSN in Canada. He talks about not wanting to be the old head sticking around past his prime and leaving the ring knowing he looked like shit and that there was a kid seeing him for the first time that he he didn't deliver for. With all of that in mind, I can't help but think maybe he wanted to go out and look dead on purpose...
2313224, Lots of love to WWE Network...

I was fully expecting to just dish out the money to order it on TV. A few pauses here and there, but luckily when it came to (max 10 secs later) it started right where it left off so we didn't miss anything. Big win for WWE last night all around.
2313225, B+
Posted by Tiger Woods, Sun Apr-06-14 11:21 PM
But B+ is great in this day and age, where they've typically opted for 30 minutes worth of D list celebrity appearances and music performances from acts like FloRida.

This was a different show, and nothing on it was flat out unbearable.

Sadly, the worst match of the night was Undertaker/Lesnar, and that was the case even before the swerve ending. That thing just never got off the ground, and I'm not sure what they were going for but I know it's far from the physical brawl I expected. Bad match, even worse ending. I'm not opposed to the streak ending, but why Lesnar? Why not Cena, Cesaro, Sheamus, Reigns? ANYONE else? Huge missed opportunity in my opinion, and in all it made for about 40 minutes of awkward TV. Unless Lesnar is moving into a program with Daniel Bryan...

Bryan is wildly popular and it was so fun to watch him tonight. Both matches were great, and I especially have to give it to Orton and Batista for giving it what they had with the creativity and execution they displayed tonight. (Batista is so done btw)

With Bryan playing the "overcome the odds" injured spot, Orton had to be the guy pushing the match on. And MAN, did he. He made gassed-out Batista look like a damn boss, he played the sadistic heel savoring that ass-whooping, he cut his back open on a damn monitor and kept going.

Way to go, Randall.

2313260, Great show overall.
Posted by wallysmith, Mon Apr-07-14 09:41 AM
It feels like the building was a bit deflated after Taker/Brock and the Divas though, since the crowd wasn't as hype for Bryan as with other shows. Maybe after Taker the crowd realized that there was no way Bryan would lose so it took some of the anticipation away.

Props to The Shield on that match. It was clearly a squash because of time constraints, because that opening segment was at least 20 mins long, and there is no way they could reasonably cut short the other segments or matches. Consummate professionals, and it made sense because really, the NAO should not be fucking with them anyways.

Fucking Cesaro is THAT DUDE. Glad to see the big push, so let's see where he goes from here.

I was fine with the Cena/Wyatt match. Getting the tease was good, and hopefully they build upon it. Fantastic storytelling regardless of the ending and knowing what we know now from the Taker finish, turning Cena heel AND ending the Streak back to back may be too much. Raw will be interesting but I do agree that if this just ends up being another tease without freshening up his character then it'll be a waste.

And after the initial shock wore off and reading some comments online, the Streak ending here makes sense. I'm guessing that sometime between the match being booked and the actual match, Taker decided no more, and wanted to end it. Dude is old, he has a young kid and maybe he just decided he didn't want to put his body at risk anymore (explaining the terrible match). I'm sure WWE would have kept the Streak going for as long as Taker would want to keep it going, and we know Brock doesn't care if he wins or loses. And the way Taker went out makes sense in the "sports" world in general... old guys trying to hold on to their legacies tend not to go out with a bang, but with a whimper.

And it makes sense to lose to Brock. Giving the rub to an up and comer means that person is going to be tied to ending The Streak for the rest of his career, for good or for bad. Imagine if Punk broke it last year then he leaves the company... that means ending The Streak was a waste. Or breaking it on someone like Dolph, but what if he doesn't resonate with fans going forward? It's too uncertain. At least with Brock, despite his part-time status (or maybe because of it), the company knows what they have with him. And, frankly, it makes his "BEAST" status loom even larger, especially as a part-timer.

And hey look... he's all grown up!!!

If he loses to Cena, Cena is the arch-heel of all time.

Which would be cool for many of us, but...
2313281, But who really thought Cena was going heel, though?
Posted by ZooTown74, Mon Apr-07-14 11:02 AM
I'd love to live in a world where there's no "they really need to turn Cena heel now" discussion around the time of Mania every year.

I also still want to know exactly what turning Cena heel is going to do for the company without hearing any claptrap about it "freshening up his character." We get it, y'all, he's stale. But the only thing turning him heel does is stop little kids and girls from cheering him.

And I don't want to hear anything about "well it gives Daniel Bryan another person to work with" either. Daniel's got plenty of heels to work with if they keep the title on him.

2313303, Turning Cena heel allows them to make another big-time face.
Posted by Cold Truth, Mon Apr-07-14 11:55 AM
A heel Cena/face Bryan program would push Bryan even further and cement him firmly as the #1 face.

This notion that Cena being the #1 make a wish guy and pushes a ton of merch and the kids and girls love him so they just can't give him the turn is absurd to me.

The guy that can replace him as the perfect #1 babyface in the PG era is here, and he's a guy who organically works in PG fashion and doesn't come across as corny or forced, certainly isn't stale, doesn't split the crowd down the middle, and is primed to be a merch machine now.

Turning Cena into a heel and building, to, say, a Bryan/Cena II at Summerslam with both men firmly cemented on opposite sides of the fence would do numbers, give us a fresh take on Cena that's actually interesting, while passing the torch to the next guy in the process.

IMO that's great business.

The notion of turning Cena heel after mania always comes up because they always tease it and there's been some great material to do it with.

In years past, the way the crowd shits on him despite him working like a dog for them while they suck off the Rock who comes around on Christmas acting like a baby daddy who thinks that's all that matters was a perfect setup.

This shit with the Wyatts is equally perfect fodder, except you have a darker psychological setup with the same result. The bottom line to me is that a monster heel Cena can do big business while elevating a guy like Bryan even higher in the process. It won't happen, but it's not a ridiculous thing to want.
2313325, The great thing about the Wyatt feud...
Posted by wallysmith, Mon Apr-07-14 01:10 PM
is that Cena's heel turn can be built organically from this point. Have the feud continue until the next ppv, with it culminating in Cena finally snapping then proceeds to beat Bray into a pulp... all in the name of preserving his "legacy". Shock and discomfort in the back, maybe Cena overhears whispers and challenges these people to matches (be they face or heel), beating them all silly. It doesn't have to be immediate either. Make it a slow burn over the course of the next year or so and have him run through various heels while slowly getting more and more unhinged each time.

The potential continuity with the Wyatts is great too. They were successful with Kane, couldn't get through to Bryan, and now are working on Cena (which will take time).

Little kids may stop cheering for Cena (eventually) but that makes the even-longer-term redemption story that much more impactful. Just because they turn Cena heel doesn't mean they need to keep him there indefinitely.
2313347, I'm willing to bet at least half of the merch sold is Cena merch.
Posted by Tiger Woods, Mon Apr-07-14 01:45 PM
No.
2313373, The point is that they have a guy they can take to that level
Posted by Cold Truth, Mon Apr-07-14 03:11 PM
in Bryan.

Cena didn't become the Merch Monster overnight.
They pushed him to that level.

Bryan can get to that level.

Do you think those kids are going to just stop watching?
Do you think those kids are just going to stop begging mom and dad for WWE shirts and action figures?

I wonder how they survived after Hogan, Rock, Austin, etc moved on.

Oh yeah: they just went and made more superstars.

They currently have the perfect PG Era Superstar to market in a way that appeals to a broad audience.

It will be much more difficult for him to take that mantle as long as WWE insists on welding it to Cenas shoulders. You don't wait until he's dead and gone to put that next big name in his spot, you strike while the iron is hot and that time is most definitely now.
2313382, I'm seeing an awful lot of flowery prose just to say
Posted by ZooTown74, Mon Apr-07-14 04:01 PM
"I think John Cena is stale and they should just turn him so his character can get a shot in the arm/be reinvigorated/be a fresh heel for the champion because we need to see stuff we haven't seen before and surprises keep me interested"

He is still the biggest attraction they have for kids. Not Rey. Not Sin Cara. Not Daniel Bryan. Not Roman Reigns - yet. They're working on making him the next guy. In any event you can't just say, "Well, it's time for a new kid attraction so turn him and make a new dude." It's not that simple, and folks keep forgetting that. Cena's still moving units with kids and girls, doing the most charity and Make-A-Wish requests of anybody.

But, you know, fuck that, I'm a grown dude wrestling fan and I'm tired of seeing Cena do shit that doesn't appeal to me so they should just turn him to regain my interest, fuck all that corporate shit.

Good luck selling that to Vince, guys.

Interesting, since those are actually great reasons to turn him.

>He is still the biggest attraction they have for kids. Not
>Rey. Not Sin Cara. Not Daniel Bryan. Not Roman Reigns -
>yet. They're working on making him the next guy. In any

That's literally not what I said at all. Stop playing fast and loose with my words just so you can ignite yet another thread derailing snarkfest. What I *actually* said was that Bryan is primed and ready to step into that slot, and can be pushed to that level now. You're talking as though there's no way they can make another guy to sell merch and make little kids happy, despite actual facts and historical evidence that says they can and have made those guys in the past.

You're talking as though the fact that nobody else is as popular means they can't build someone to that level.

You're also talking as though I'm suggesting turning him heel without having a credible guy to take on that role.

>But, you know, fuck that, I'm a grown dude wrestling fan and
>I'm tired of seeing Cena do shit that doesn't appeal to me so
>they should just turn him to regain my interest, fuck all that

>
>Good luck selling that to Vince, guys.

Yeah, because, you know, I said want Cena to turn because I'm a grown man who is tired of him and he doesn't appeal to him. That's totally been my reasoning.

That doesn't sound like me though.

Perhaps it's because that's literally not what I said at all, wonder of wonders.

I'm actually talking smart business.

You know, about making the next guy.

Not some imaginary guy, but a guy who is there and peaking as we speak. A guy who is ready to take the ball and run. When Cena betrays those kids and attacks the reigning good guy on the block, guess who they jump ship to?

You do this because you don't know if you can get another guy over like that while Cena is still in prime form. You get a second life out of Cena while he's still big business and leverage his popularity to pour into a youth movement and pass the torch in a tangible way.

But hey, you keep pretending that there's no logic and I'm just another frat guy who hates Cena because because because because.

Or... here's a thought. You can gave a conversation that actually takes the other persons actual words into consideration instead of making shit up so you have something to smirk at.

Again, it's good business. You see that he sells merch and does make a wish and is easily their most marketable guy, and those are valid points when you're not inventing substandard logic out of thin air to argue against. The fact is we have a guy who can be the next guy and is ready to take that step into that upper echelon, and it's going to be hard to make him while Cena's shadow looms.

If you want to disagree, then PLEASE make an attempt to do so by using the actual words that I've written, not some shit you made up out of thin air just to get another negative exchange going.

Further, we're talking to each other on a message board, not sitting in a WWE Creative meeting with Vince trying to sell him on it. Way to keep a conversation in context there.

Apparently, we're not just shooting the shit here, we're in a creative meeting trying to sell Vince on our ideas. Thanks for the heads up.

>I'm guessing (hoping) The Shield and Bryan on one side and
>Evolution/Kane on the other on RAW?

Before the main event, Batista and Orton came to ring and beat down Bryan. Then Kane came out and helped them out. Then Triple H came out for his title match, but before he could pin Bryan, the Shield came out and cleared the ring. Bryan knee'd Triple H and Yes'd on a turnbuckle while the Shield did their all-hands-in thing.

So, it seems like at some we're getting that eight-man tag. I'd assume it's at the next PPV, but maybe it'll just be on Raw or something. Either way, War Games that shit!

Cena just isn't the right guy for this angle to go on for a long time if he isn't just going to black out at some point and beat the hell out of all of them with chains, chairs, etc.

Black jorts psycho Cena during the fall wouldn't hurt my feelings at all if he got a chance to try to outstrong folks. Or if wrestling was still wrestling, he'd just act like the worst-case scenario of what people think of flamboyant black athletes (think TO). He'd be wearing bodysuits and looking at himself in the mirror backstage, hitting people with a super shiny and 'expensive' 4-finger gold ring, cheating, and having violent outbursts as a reaction to basically anything. Oh...and he'd be back to rapping...maybe even with a big black dude as a bodyguard. Too bad Zeke Jackson can't even stand around and be big for 7 months ala Diesel during his HBK bodyguard phase.

Nevamind...gotta make them wishes and sell those lime green t-shirts. I say make a lime green 'YES' shirt and give Cena a go at being terribly bad (as a heel) for a while. Then, use the kids or his dad calling him out to turn him back to fruity pebbles Cena to help folks stop Evolution from running/ruining everything.

There has to be post-show meetings where these announcing issues are discussed, cussed about, and/or replayed for effect. Sure, the 'orgasm over everything' style has its limits too. But going with the 'legit injury silence' 1-3x a show in reasonably normal wrestling situations makes no sense.

Or maybe they are doing it on purpose...

bray vs. cena in a steel cage (confirmed)

shield vs. evolution (the direction its going) I don't see aitch working a crazy gimmick match, so it'll probably be no DQ

cesaro vs. big e (cesaro should make it out the tourney, unless they make swagger cost him)

bryan vs. kane 1st blood or I quit match. Should be a great blowoff match for Kane.

usos vs rybxel vs. brotherhood bring back a crazy tlc match

to a point of overdose. The worst thing is dealing with false hosses (looking at Dave only because he's standing in front of Ryback in the fake hoss line).

And sure...it is wrestling..WWE at that. We're not gonna have 25 Dean Malenkos flipping around doing nerdy awesome stuff and homages all night long. There's gonna be hosses all up and down the card. But 'man! This dude is skrong!' gets old when you get lied to enough times when a big guy who isn't that strong or good gets billed as 'you should care because he's super duper strong' and Cesaro and Cena come out right before/after that without the same 'hey, he's strong y'all' billing when they're clearly skrong as hell..and in many cases stronger than the 'super duper strong' guys.

They are trying to adjust to it (acknowledging Cesaro as functionally effin strong), but Sheamus is getting the short end right now as an epic working hoss. If he was around in the 80s, that fella would've been pinning Hogan or at least coming closer than the others.

Thing is, the current crop has a great collective workrate.

I can’t speak for other Hoss fans, but my reaction is rarely “wow, he’s strong!” with these guys. That doesn’t impress me. What impresses me is when big work to their advantages as big men in a way that is fluid, dynamic, and psychologically sound.

A guy like Sheamus is great because he’s essentially the prototype for the “WWE Style” and has a strong psychology foundation. His move set is a great one for storytelling and facilitating an emotional ebb and flow to the match. The Brogue Kick, White Noise, Celtic Cross, the “Beats of the Bodhran” chest pound, Cloverleaf, Irish Curse is a hell of a move set that basically has 4 finishers and makes a branding dream if they promote him correctly.

***** I still think he needs an “I hate bullies!” gimmick and should make it his mission to help Daniel Bryan at some point, building to a title match at a major PPV (SS or RR, if not Mania) that unfolds out of mutual respect from their history together. But that's just me*****

Anyhow, Sheamus, Big E, Cesaro, Barrett, Big E, hell even Swagger at this point, make for an excellent group of big men who work like big men but do so in very dynamic, exciting and engaging ways. That’s not even counting Brock, and any of those guys (E might be too green still) could give Brock a convincing run for his money. They make for an excellent crop of big guys who can go, and frankly the strong factor is only a part of what makes them so compelling to watch.
2319592, I totally agree...
Posted by jimaveli, Sat Apr-26-14 09:29 AM
Especially with Sheamus. But WWE takes the easy way out a lot of the time with leaning far too much on 'check it out y'all! This dude is hella strong'. It is like they sell the dope hoss workers short a lot of times because they focus too much on 'this dude is big and/or strong' like it is still 87. Just because wrestling nerds like us can tell the difference between a Khali and Sheamus/The Hillbilly Cult dudes, etc., doesn't mean that they still didn't show up and try to make us 'believe' that Khali is awesome a bit too often.

I think we all believe that good matches + the proper presentation and attention = awesome. Throw in an important title and/or some manufactured personal beef/history and the OCCASIONAL well-done and well-timed swerve (I see you, Hogan), and wrestling is at its best.

Flair as NWA champ in the late 80s for example: he's wearing suits, acting a fool, talking shit after every title defense even if he pulled some tights on a rollup or barely beat an enhancement talent-level dude...and then, one of his 'old' enemies pops up from WWF on some old 'remember how I would whoop your ass when we were coming up? Well, I see that you're the champ now and I want to be the champ too. So that shouldn't be hard for me to accomplish because I used to whoop your ass 8 years ago...time is up, Ric!'. AKA the 89 Steamboat run. Then, they delivered on the matches and that run of matches is still the stuff of legends. Flair sold it on some old 'not you again!' and Steamboat was like 'yeah Ric, its me...WWE was trippin, so here I am'.

Posted by QBoogie, Thu Apr-24-14 05:46 PM
... love that division of WWE.
2318808, We're a long time from it, but I hope they don't hit us with NXT burnout
Posted by Y2Flound, Thu Apr-24-14 06:03 PM
By that I mean what has worked for NXT is that people went and developed, built a character, gathered some catchphrases and things along that line and most people didn't know anything about them until they hit the roster. It has worked for so many people over the last 2 years or so.

I have a fear now that NXT basically becoming another show that the WWE pushes hard makes it matter a lot more. People won't be able to make mistakes and try new things without repricussions, and superstars will be made before they even hit the roster which sounds like a good thing but isn't always.

Paige is a good example right now of winning the belt on day 1 because of her NXT hype and the fact that the Raw crowd after WM would know her. I don't consider this a problem with her per se, but it does put her in a spot where you have to wonder what is her career trajectory now when you start on top that fast?

All speculation of course, but I can see a day where a guy like Cesaro is already over as fuck because of NXT and doesn't come to the roster as a new wrestler who works his way to the top. When that starts happening NXT is no longer really a developmental show and just becomes a regular show where wrestlers appear on.

Or maybe it's never an issue, just something I thought about.
2319231, I also fear it to be another offering ala smackdown...
Posted by QBoogie, Fri Apr-25-14 02:39 PM

Curious to know if they'll segue in a feud with Sting before he says bye bye too.
2319057, Honestly wouldn't be surprised if we don't see him til Mania season
Posted by Y2Flound, Fri Apr-25-14 08:32 AM
I think they won't hold off that long, but I can see a Mania season where a clear taker feud is ramping up (Sting or Shield maybe) someone is trying to draw Taker out and he eventually shows up to say no and give his goodbyes.

Although that is a super let down now that I write it out.

Cena vs Wyatt has been great, as long as Wyatt doesn't job twice in a row on PPV I'm happy

Shield vs Evolution is pretty cool but that's b/c I Love the Shield, don't really care about this evolution reunion

Main event feud has been garbage- I understand Bryan had a honeymoon and then his dad's death to deal with so I understand, but doesn't change the fact that I don't give a shit about the main event.

BNB vs Big E will be cool to see BNB get a run

The triple threat match will be good

I guess overall it's not that this card sucks, it's that it is pretty much a standard Monday night raw card with some titles on the line.

I think we will see a lot of this with the Network now that they won't sell as many PPVs and they are kind of just like monthly shows most people get for $10. Mania was just so good and this is just a pretty nice looking card, but certainly not a must buy PPV if you don't have the network.

Bryan and Paige retain (no Usos match?). Barrett takes the IC title (I hope they give them some time, it could be fun if they do). Cesaro wins. I think Shield wins because I don't think Evolution is sticking around. Wyatt should win, but it's probably gonna be Cena again. Do I need to predict the Rusev squash?

I'm looking forward to Shield-Evolution the most, mostly because the Shield is in it.
