The Vikings continue to not want to do anything correct and gave some scrub 8.5 million. Sam Shields is being paid way too much.
2305452, glad Seattle kept him. we'll miss Red Bryant, though

somewhat of a concern there for sure
2306311, i don't know that it was a bad move to let Red leave
Posted by GOMEZ, Wed Mar-12-14 07:07 PM
I'll miss him as a fan favorite, though. When he was healthy, we were super stout against the run.

D-tackle/End might be an area we look to fortify in the draft. We've still got a ton of talent, but the rotation got a lot thinner this week.

He use to get his hands on a lot of balls (kicked & thrown) but that vanished all the sudden too

2305430, Writings on the wall: Bears about to suck in defense free agency
Posted by select_from_where, Mon Mar-10-14 03:31 PM
Emery already getting undercut by 500 fucking thousand dollars on an 8 million dollar deal for Bennett?

I can already see this shitty Chicago cheap ass sports management style coming into focus.

Now Emery gonna go overpay some second-rate DE because bears ownership will be pissed he missed on Bennett.

Then he's gonna overpay a bunch of other mediocre talent thinking we can cash in during the draft.

Wooooooo this shits about to be bad.

Bears have a shitload of UFA's and damn near ALL of them about to get poached by the rest of the league because Emery too high on his fucking horse.

These defensively-advanced teams know how to value defensive players, Emery is about to overplay his hand and we gonna be left with a ton of shitty one-year free agents.

Im a big bears fan but this year is gonna be a shitty one on defense folks, just watch.

notice I said shit a lot, there will be much shit indeed
2305634, How is it Emery's fault that Bennett chose to take less?
Posted by J_Sun, Tue Mar-11-14 10:07 AM
And ACTUALLY Bennett's deal is for 28.5m/4 years, 7.125m per year. Bennett only played 57% of Seattle's snaps last year and he chose to take less money cuz they are promising him around the same amount of playing time. He would have had to play more in Chicago. If the 8.5 per is correct, I think that was a fair offer and Bennett was really unlikely to leave Seattle in the first place if he doesn't want to be 3 down player.

2305679, We dont know all of emerys offer but
Posted by select_from_where, Tue Mar-11-14 12:12 PM
its safe to assume the bears over overvalued and under promised on playing time or undervalued and under promised on playing time.

when markets form, the best value usually wins out. The issue here from emerys perspective is you only get so many chances to correctly value the player, if not then we are left to over-value under-valued players.

dig?

Posted by COOLEHMAGAZINE, Tue Mar-11-14 12:23 PM
The idea that Bennett didn't come here because he would play too much is ridiculous I think.

We had to give him a better offer.

We probably should have.

http://bleacherreport.com/tb/dcBlG?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=st-louis-rams

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Dispatch reports that free agent OL Rodger Saffold has informed the Rams that he is signing with a different team.
Aaron Wilson recently reported that the Raiders have been in contract with “several” free agent offensive tackles and are expected to sign Saffold to a for around $8 million per year.
Wilson also mentioned that Saffold has been in contact with the Buccaneers as well.
Saffold’s name recently came up as a target for the Cardinals, who are obviously looking for offensive line help. However, Kent Somers recently mentioned that Arizona appears to have their focus on free agent LT Jared Veldheer, who is believed to be a “more viable target” than Saffold.
The Rams would like to re-sign Saffold, but no longer appears to be an option.
We have him listed as the No. 23 player in our Top 50 Free Agents list.

2305658, Fins signed Delmas and Branden Albert
Posted by Wonderl33t, Tue Mar-11-14 10:59 AM
Hearing $10 million/year for Albert. I'm not sure Delmas is that big of an upgrade over Clemons, but his contract is only one year $3.5M.

$10M is a lot for Albert who is not a top 5 LT, but I think it's worth it because it opens up options other than O-line for the first round pick. Could go MLB, OLB, or DT if the value is good.

I think a good draft would be Zack Martin 1st round, best DT available 2nd round, and Shane Skov in the 3rd. I'd even be cool with Skov in the second if the team wants him that badly.

I like the move, but I wonder if that means we
are no longer looking at Greg Robinson.

Something tells me our focus on switching to a 3-4
will shift our focus to Mack or Barr(preferably Mack)

If that is the case Im cool with it as long as we get
a bad ass NT in FA.

Still sad to hear we wont have Babs no more tho
(EDIT: confused, hear we are working on a deal now
after reports that we were gonna part ways yesterday)

I like it. Least favorite is Jackson
but the deals they've made aren't terrible
by any stretch

Pretty much guarantees we go
LB in the draft, specifically
Mack.

This also makes our draft plans
overall much more clear

But I do wonder what the plan is

Posted by Tek4mula, Tue Mar-11-14 04:52 PM
I guess I'm slightly in favor of the switch because I've felt for the last couple of years that Fangio's mirrored safety scheme would work better with two FS's. I think will lose some of the intimidation factor but with the direction the league is going I'll take the boost in coverage and live without the big hits. One note I've seen about Bathea is that he (like Eric Reid) had 0 penalties last season.
2305825, good leader and a very good player for a long time
Posted by will_5198, Tue Mar-11-14 05:07 PM

By "WE" I mean every QB on the Eagles schedule. Eli(te) got that feedly notification and bought everyone at the nearest bar drinks.

QBs that throw at Malcolm Jenkins complete over 75 percent of their passes and end up with 103 QB rating. I hope the Browns backups get a shot at dude. If this turns out to be a good signing and Eagles fan doesn't up this post or quote this reply, y'all collectively ain't shit.

*EDIT* Jenkins almost set an NFL record for most missed tackles in 2010. This was a great signing.

*EDIT 2* Am I crazy for thinking the Pats will make the Super Bowl if they sign any of these three? Eric Decker, Santonio Holmes, Brandon Lloyd, and/or Miles Austin.

LoL at the notion that *now all of a sudden* teams are going to be throwing the ball all over the Eagles secondary because of the Malcolm Jenkins signing. For someone as obsessed with the Eagles as you are, one would think you'd know at least a little bit about the Eagles' problem areas. Do you even know who the Eagles started at Safety over the last several years??? You honestly think the secondary has suddenly gotten worse because Jenkins has replaced Patrick Chung/Kurt Coleman?

Jenkins isn't, nor is he being paid to be a great safety. He's a functional starting safety with potential. He doesn't do any one thing great, but he's versatile and will give us more consistency at the safety spot. He came at a good value. Mike Mitchell just turned in his first good season in four years and got signed for 5 years $25 million. I have no problem with this signing at all. Plus, it's clear as day that the Eagles aren't finished with adding players in the secondary. They will definitely address S/CB early in the draft.

As a Browns fan, keep enjoying that view from the bottom. Not having shit to look forward to but the draft each year must afford you lots of time to care about other teams. And double LOL at the Cowgirls fan chiming in. Jenkins would be a MASSIVE upgrade over the bullshit you guys trotted out at safety last year.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10592439/miami-dolphins-trade-jonathan-martin-san-francisco-49ers

The Miami Dolphins traded offensive tackle Jonathan Martin to the San Francisco 49ers for a conditional draft pick on Tuesday.

Martin, who signed a four-year rookie contract with Miami in 2012 worth $4.8 million, was at the center of a high-profile bullying scandal this past season.

An investigation for the league determined that teammates Richie Incognito, John Jerry and Mike Pouncey engaged in persistent harassment of Martin, another Dolphins offensive lineman and an assistant trainer.

According to the report released in February by investigator Ted Wells, Martin was subjected to "a pattern of harassment" by Incognito, Jerry and Pouncey that included racial slurs and vicious sexual taunts about his mother and sister.

The deal will reunite Martin with Jim Harbaugh, his coach at Stanford.

Martin expressed his excitement on Twitter Tuesday night:

49ers basically get free tryout to see how he does this summer and if he makes the team they give up a 2015 7th rounder and pay him about a million a year for the next two seasons to play swing tackle. Niners survived last year with the starting RG backing up both tackle positions so hopefully this works out.

Also, just rooting for Martin to get his career back on track. Depression can be a tough thing to work through, especially when you're in the spotlight.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10595442/demarcus-ware-denver-broncos-agree-30-million-deal

DeMarcus Ware has reached an agreement with the Denver Broncos on a three-year, $30 million contract that includes $20 million guaranteed, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The deal, which is pending a physical, will pay Ware $13 million this season -- $250,000 more than the star pass rusher was scheduled to make from the Dallas Cowboys, who released him on Tuesday.

Ware's $7 million salary next season also will be guaranteed, according to the source. The deal is contingent upon the 31-year-old Ware passing his physical Wednesday.

Three weeks ago, Ware had two bone chips removed from his elbow. But the injury is said to be doing well, with no issues.

Once Ware was released by Dallas, at least a dozen teams expressed interest. In a 24-hour span, the Broncos have added Ware, cornerback Aqib Talib and safety T.J. Ward.

2306201, Josh McCown agrees to 2-year contract with Bucs (swipe)
Posted by Marbles, Wed Mar-12-14 02:20 PM

At first I thought this meant that the Bucs wouldn't be looking at QBs in the draft. But now, I'm wondering if they're looking at McCown to go into this as a slated backup.

***

http://www.tampabay.com/sports/football/bucs/qb-mccown-agrees-to-2-year-contract-with-bucs/2169853

Two years ago, Josh McCown was coaching high school football when Lovie Smith talked him into resuming his NFL career with the Chicago Bears.

Smith was persuasive again, signing McCown to a two-year deal with the Bucs Wednesday.

The Bucs are believed to be finalizing a deal with Bengals free agent offensive tackle Anthony Collins.

Wide receiver Ted Ginn, linebacker Dane Fletcher, cornerback Charles Tillman and center Evan Deitrich-Smith are making visits.

McCown had planned to visit the Houston Texans and New York Jets but cancelled those trips, one day after arriving in Tampa.

The 34-year-old veteran is coming off his best year as a pro, going 3-2 with the Bears with 13 touchdowns and one interception as the backup to Jay Cutler.

In Tampa Bay, McCown will at least be able to compete for the starting job against second-year pro Mike Glennon, an opportunity he didn't have in Chicago.

The Bucs moved their scheduled 3 p.m. press conference to 4:30, presumably so McCown and perhaps another potential free agent could be included in the gathering.

The Bucs have until 4 to trade or release cornerback Darrelle Revis, thus avoiding having to pay him a $1.5-million bonus and having to send the Jets a third-round pick in the 2014 draft to complete last year's trade.

Former Bucs and Florida State linebacker Dekoda Watson is signing with the Jaguars after visiting last night.

Bears Lose McCown To Bucs
March 12, 2014 1:42 PM

(CBS) Opportunity and money have led quarterback Josh McCown to Tampa Bay.

After filling in admirably for an injured Jay Cutler in Chicago last season, McCown signed a two-year deal with the Bucs on Wednesday afternoon, his agent confirmed. The contract is worth $10 million — $4.75 million this season and $5.25 million next, according to multiple reports.

McCown kept open the option of returning to Chicago, but he also expressed a desire to compete for a starting job. He wouldn’t have that chance in Chicago behind Cutler, but he’ll find it in Tampa Bay, where he’ll compete with Mike Glennon.

McCown threw for 13 touchdowns and one interception in eight games for Chicago last season. He started five games.

2306403, And Lovie's already named McCown the starter
Posted by Marauder21, Thu Mar-13-14 08:38 AM
I thought Glennon looked better as the season went on.

http://nfl.si.com/2014/03/12/lovie-smith-josh-mccown-tampa-bay-buccaneers/?eref=sihp

Neither head coach Lovie Smith nor GM Jason Licht attempted to hide the fact that Tampa Bay thought it could upgrade at quarterback over 2013 rookie starter Mike Glennon.

“Whenever you have a chance to get a franchise quarterback, you have to consider that,” Smith said at the combine when asked about Tampa Bay’s draft plans, implying rather obviously that Glennon did not fall under the “franchise QB” umbrella.

“New coach, new regime, you can’t just hand the keys over and say this guy is our starter,” said Licht, via the Tampa Bay Times. “You have to see what he is, and competition drives the best out of everybody.”

Any desire for an open quarterback competition, though, fell by the wayside Wednesday when Tampa Bay landed the veteran quarterback it was after: ex-Chicago backup-turned-replacement starter Josh McCown. During the press conference to announce McCown’s signing, Smith was asked if the 34-year-old journeyman would be his starter heading toward the 2014 season.

Smith’s reply: “Yes, he is.”

There are two implications to be drawn from that statement. One is that Glennon’s future suddenly looks quite murky, despite a performance last season that was better than most expected. Any incumbent QB — and most players, regardless of position — is put on automatic notice when a coaching regime change occurs, and Smith wanted to get a player of his choosing under center.

The other, more sweeping conclusion to be drawn from Smith’s comment: He is of the opinion that this Tampa Bay team can compete and win immediately.

That is a bold stance to take when inheriting a 4-12 team, let alone one in what shapes up to be a brutal division. It also, for now, places an awful lot of faith in McCown, who, before subbing in for Jay Cutler last season, was a combined 12-19 in his career with five teams. He also has not entered a season with a starting job since he did so for the Raiders way back in 2007. McCown was plenty steady for the Bears in 2013, but running the show from start to finish is another challenge entirely.

But the Buccaneers — in some ways like the Chiefs of 2012 — had more talent than their record indicated, perhaps needing only a coaching change, QB swap and upgrades in some key positions to make a serious leap up the standings.

Is Tampa Bay ready for that sort of move? Probably not quite yet. Smith’s initial faith in McCown indicates that he feels otherwise; or, at the very least, that the remaining holes on his roster are fillable before Week 1 arrives.

The Tampa Bay fans should appreciate that approach, even if they want to join the rest of us in feeling skeptical. This franchise has not made the playoffs since 2007 and has not won in the postseason since taking home a Super Bowl crown in 2002. The plan by bringing in Smith was to avoid a long, drawn-out rebuilding process. Sticking with Glennon as the starter would have been a nod toward that approach, with the future taking precedence over the present.

McCown may not be the right guy to lead the charge from mediocrity to contention. Smith, though, made it clear that he believes McCown will move Tampa Bay further in that direction than Glennon.

Interesting...although I wonder if he's throwing that out there to keep folks off the trail of another player he's after. Man, I don't know. Here's the quote:

"However, Smith made it clear that McCown's signing will not prevent the Bucs from taking a quarterback in the draft with the team's No. 7 overall pick."

http://www.tampabay.com/sports/football/bucs/bucs-move-forward-with-mccown-as-quarterback/2169906

TAMPA — It seems like Lovie Smith is always asking Josh McCown if he will play quarterback for him. Smith did it again Wednesday, and the free agent signed with the Bucs, knowing the starting job is his to lose when training camp starts in July.

The first request came during training camp in 2010 when Bears backup Caleb Hanie suffered a shoulder injury in the first preseason game. McCown, who was playing for the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League at the time, amazingly turned Smith's offer down.

"I called Josh," said Smith, then the Bears' coach. "Being the man that he is — and I said, 'Hey, Josh, I want you to come (to Chicago).' He had promised his team (Hartford) in the other league (the UFL). He said, 'Lovie, I would really like to come, and it would be a quarterback's dream to be in the NFL, but I gave the coach my word that I would stay here this year.'

"We went to the NFC Championship Game that year. That's what he turned down. When you start looking at the character of the man and what you are dealing with, it started then.''

The next year, McCown was coaching quarterbacks at Marvin Ridge High School in Charlotte, N.C., when he accepted an invitation from Smith to be the Bears' backup to Jay Cutler. "When I had the chance to get with him again, I had I different perspective of him, and it just worked," Smith said. "I think we all end up where we are supposed to be."

On Wednesday, Smith used his persuasive powers on McCown again, this time convincing him to come to Tampa Bay as the Bucs' starting quarterback.

McCown, 34, signed a two-year, $10 million contract that could be worth as much as $15 million with incentives, and he knows he has the inside track to the starting job.

Mike Glennon, who went 4-9 as a rookie with 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions last season, would have to do something extraordinary to win the job.

"There has to be a starting spot, a starting point, a starting person to go out there first. And that would be Josh," Smith said.

"I told Josh, 'You knew for a fact, even though I couldn't talk to you, that when I got a job, I would call you.' And he did. You have to believe in your quarterback like that. We got our guy."

However, Smith made it clear that McCown's signing will not prevent the Bucs from taking a quarterback in the draft with the team's No. 7 overall pick.

"Free agency just puts us in better position for the draft," Smith said. "That's all it's doing. We're not held hostage."

The day began with a news conference to introduce four free agents who will play significant roles for the Bucs in 2014 — Bengals defensive end Michael Johnson, Titans Pro Bowl cornerback Alterraun Verner, Seahawks defensive tackle Clinton McDonald and Giants tight end Brandon Myers.

It was postponed for 90 minutes to accommodate the signing of McCown, who is scheduled to be introduced in a news conference at 2 today.

Just prior to the proceedings, the Bucs, as expected, announced the release of cornerback Darrelle Revis, sending shock waves through the NFL.

Unable to trade Revis because he would not restructure his $16 million contract, the team felt it had no other option.

With so many needs to address coming off a 4-12 record and only five selections in the draft, the Bucs avoided having to pay Revis a $1.5 million bonus and having to send the Jets a third-round pick in 2014 to complete last year's trade with the Jets. Instead, New York will receive a fourth-round selection.

"You saw these four guys here," general manager Jason Licht said. "You saw the transaction, adding the quarterback. And we're not done yet. We would've have been able to do that if that certain transaction hadn't happened."

On Wednesday night, the Bucs were believed to be on the verge of reaching a deal with Bengals offensive tackle Anthony Collins.

They also were visited by Bears cornerback Charles Tillman, Panthers receiver Ted Ginn, Packers center Evan Dietrich-Smith and Patriots linebacker Dane Fletcher.

But nothing sets the template for a franchise like a starting quarterback and McCown never expected to find himself in this position after bouncing around to six teams.

Last season he had a career year, playing in eight games, with three wins in five starts filling in for injured starter Cutler. McCown ranked third in the league with a passer rating of 109.0.

More importantly, the Bears referred to him as the "glue'' to their locker room.

"It's a new year,'' Smith said. "We have a long way to go, but we'll start it together."

They/you would know better than most, so I'm really excited about it. He goes from one of the most run-heavy offenses to a Blue Angels airshow, so he's really gonna get a chance to shine.

All Lions fans need to know--seven drops in four years. That's a month's worth of work for most of our pass catchers. Love this signing.

Posted by Lach, Wed Mar-12-14 07:32 PM
http://espn.go.com/boston/nfl/story/_/id/10597820/darrelle-revis-agrees-new-england-patriots

Cornerback Darrelle Revis and the New England Patriots have reached agreement on a one-year, $12 million deal, according to league sources.

Revis still needs to pass his physical and sign his contract. Once he does, it will continues Revis' reign as the NFL's highest paid cornerback and gives the Patriots the player they needed to replace cornerback Aqib Talib, who unexpectedly bolted for the Denver Broncos late Tuesday night.

Once Tampa Bay released Revis, New England immediately stepped up its pursuit.

The two sides quickly were able to come together to reach the one-year agreement that once again will give the cornerback the chance to hit the free-agent market after the 2014 season and become one of the biggest stories of next March.

2306410, such a basic view, but ok
Posted by rjc27, Thu Mar-13-14 09:06 AM
Peyton's first year was Decker's third, typical break out year for a WR, and he did just that...

But go back to his second season, playing with Kyle Orton and Tebow...

44-612 8 td's.. with time fucking tebow... in his second year in the league..

He wasn't some scrub undrafted free agent, he was the consensus 3rd best wr in his draft class behind Dez Bryant and AJ Green. he ran a 4.5 which is fine for a guy his size, he returned punts, he's good after the catch...

the playmaker you think they should get instead... you have any idea's? that guy was not available. Decker gives them a big target for a fair price

I never said he was a scrub. He went out and got paid. Can't blame him for that. I just don't see him doing much with the Jets. We will see how much of an improvement this will be for Geno.
2308035, they overpaid for a #3 receiver to help their young wack QB

Anyone thinking Geno-Smith-to-Eric-Decker is indicative of a potent (or shit, even serviceable) offensive attack is on that good T-Dot Mayor Rob Ford Crack.

2306390, very pleased with this deal, especially at that price
Posted by rjc27, Thu Mar-13-14 07:53 AM
all his detractors are saying fair things (although he was doing his thing with kyle orton too and even tim fucking tebow)

but he is making 7 mil per, that puts him in line with high end #2's... barely making more then Hartline when I thought he'd try to demand mike wallace money...

He is big, and also underrated after the catch, turns 27 this week so jets locked in for his entire prime, clearly has a chip on his shoulder after the product of peyton talk...

The Jets can't worry about who is a #1 or #2. First of all, that means nothing (seattle just won the super bowl) Second of all, they just need wr's PERIOD. Who is the "#1" means shit, they need better players... now rumors of James Jones being added, Decker and JJ outside with Kerley in the slot, plus a deep wr draft... gives hope that Geno will have real nfl targets
2306402, $15M guaranteed isn't bad.

no cisin, no agendas. I know I'll prolly get clowned in some kinda way, but fine. I just need to get this. Maybe I don't have a good enough grasp of how free agency works...so I'm always open to learning something new. Ok...you're Eric Decker...you're an ok WR...not going to the HOF, but you're having a cool career. You've made football money (c)Ray Lewis. You just came off a VERY good season where you were part of a record-breaking offense. You play with one of (if not the best) QB of all time. Why do you go to the Jets? Is all that not worth less money? I'm sincerely asking. Did he not have a choice in the matter? Was Denver just like "deuces, Eric"?
2306473, Denver did not even make an offer, and they really couldn't
Posted by rjc27, Thu Mar-13-14 12:18 PM
They paid Welker, they now need to pay Demaryius and Julius next year...

QB already makes a shitload, and they clearly had to upgrade from the team that took a complete shitbeating in the SB, so spending on Talib and Ware and Ward made way more sense... when you draft well at a certain position, sometimes u gotta let someone walk
2307452, you nailed it...
Posted by Dstl1, Mon Mar-17-14 08:38 AM
he was on Mike and Mike this morning. Said Denver basically let him float into FA to see what the numbers were looking like out there. He never got an offer. Said the Jets was the best situation and they seemed genuinely interested in having him there.

I'm just about done with McKenzie at this point, obviously he probably won't be fired right now but he hasn't brought a single guy who's a definite future contributor and he can't even bring in a decent free agent. Veldheer and Houston left on very reasonable deals, and it's not like there's a bunch of guys left who are worth throwing big money at now.

Amazingly he's almost made me wish Al was still alive, at least they were bad in an entertaining way, this is just depressing.

like Gomez said, dude was fucking up WHEN he was playing and if he woulda came back (didn't because of suspension) he would NOT have got his starting spot back because he was being outplayed by BOTH Walter Thurmond AND Byron Maxwell.

he was making errors that were not typical of what he had shown before thus you can only logically assume that A. his ability slipped or B. teams found a way to expose him. Either way, it's an issue for teams looking to sign him.

Posted by ChampD1012, Thu Mar-13-14 03:29 PM
I think his plan was to trade Steve Smith to take him off the salary cap and use that space for a offensive tackle and Hakeem Nicks...

When Smith talked his displeasure about him being in past tense...all the leverage was gone...he was going to be released...

And so it happened...

And we can't afford getting Nicks and the one OT that we were looking at decided to go to the bucs...

I hope Cam Newton is practicing with Marvin McNutt and Tavaris King right now...

Posted by SoulHonky, Thu Mar-13-14 01:39 PM
My guess is that they asked to restructure his contract and he refused. I wouldn't be completely stunned if they gave him the option to leak that he asked to be released first rather than being unceremoniously dumped by the team. (Also, it would be good for the team if he asked to be released rather than them cutting a locker room leader.)

Crushing loss as a fan but given the cap and his injury, it's probably the best move for the Pats.

and it was a smart move. but it's just so sad and we saw how much worse the defense was once he (and kelly) got hurt.

we need some talent on the line to help Jones. this offseason isn't remotely acceptable without that. And I like going into the draft without gapping holes so you can draft purely for talent. now there's definitely a weak spot along the line, even if you think Kelly's coming back and playing well.

Posted by Jayson Willyams, Fri Mar-14-14 12:01 PM
When the ball is in midair heading toward him, I invariably shout NO! before he even gets a chance to fuck it up. I have never seen a more embarassing play than the way he let that 190lb Tennessee DB just rip the ball from his hands in that OT thriller a couple years ago. He has probably lost us 3 games single-handedly (get it? Because he obviously doesn't have two working hands?), and contributed to countless others.

That said, it's still an easily-defensible signing. Look at what Pitta got paid, and then look at the remaining FA tight ends. The deal is pretty much what the market would dictate. We still need depth at so many positions that spending a draft pick on a TE was always going to be a mistake. With Pettigrew, Fauria, and Michael Williams, that's one position we don't have to worry about at all.

And perhaps most importantly, we completely marginalized him as a pass-catcher in the second half of last season, which is a much more efficient/intelligent use of his...hold on, vomiting... his talents.

Pettigrew as an extra tackle sealing the edge for Bush/Bell, catching 35-40 balls a year and immediately falling down: useful piece, worth the money.

Pettigrew as a 2nd target, catching 70+ passes like his first few seasons, being an integral part of the passing game in crunch time: shoot me in the fucking face.

He'll probably get even fewer chances to fuck up with the ball in his hands this year, as we finally have a legit #2 option in the passing game, and (hopefully) Fauria develops into more than just a red-zone rebounder.

This is the equivalent of Andrew Luck losing all his offensive weapons. They're trying to force him to take less since his numbers will dramatically decrease. They didn'r even give Hakeem Nicks an offer and he wanted to come there. They wouldn't do this to Tannehill or Matt Ryan.

Word on the street is Desean might have to take a pay cut or get cut. There's no way the Philly team cuts him so there's a chance he takes a pay cut.

We gave nicks an offer. Nicks said he didn't think he was a fit in Carolina and Gettleman agreed. Which means that he didn't want to be a number 1 WR since he went to Indy to hide behind Reggie and TY.

Carolina offense was ranked 26th last season. Our top 3 WRs (Smith, Lafell, and Ginn) last season accumulated 1928 receiving yards total...our best pass catcher was Greg Olsen

I didn't like how the Smith release went down but I think Gettleman wants Cam to take over as the leader of this team. We haven't been able to find a WR successor to smith and I have a theory of why. Carolina is drafting two WRs this year and have some young ones already on the roster. Gettleman believes that smith off the roster will do more good than bad because his history has shown such.

It's hard for me to be angry with the other WRs leaving. Because they underperformed. I think Shula is the bigger problem. But our offense was atrocious last season.

I think Carolina will be fine. People forget what Gettleman inherited. The situation is bad mainly because of the 2010 contracts. 84 million of our cap space is for 10 players this season. 3 of those players aren't even on the roster. Hurney screwed us and we are still suffering. It won't get better until those RB contracts end. And neither one are willing to take a paycut.

Posted by smutsboy, Mon Mar-17-14 04:56 PM
What happens if Peyton retires in 12 months, or is ineffective two years from now?

Then you're going to have to replace a HOF QB who made your entire offense go, and you'll be stuck with massive cap headaches on a defense that wasn't really the issue to begin with.

They need to avoid being left high and dry the way the Colts would've been if they hadn't won the Luck sweepstakes.

But that's like making a retirement plan based on winning lotto.
2307652, Colts were hemorrhaging talent by that point
Posted by will_5198, Mon Mar-17-14 05:13 PM
even if Polian hadn't given out so many inane extensions, I don't think it would've mattered -- draftees were busting so there was nobody to replace them.

Denver is in a little bit of a different spot because they're younger, but you can end up waiting decades for another elite quarterback (like...they did). I think they should push their chips in and pay the price later; nobody believes they're a contender with Osweiler, and if it all goes to shit they can do what Indy did -- eat the dead money in one season and get the highest pick possible.

2308036, Philly media is mad Chip doesn't speak to them & Desean's name sells
Posted by Bombastic, Tue Mar-18-14 07:05 PM
Adam Schefter broke every Eagle free-agent signing.

Kelly has oddly not spoken to the media or granted an interview all offseason.

The Inquirer/DailyNews online are now featuring Birds beat writers & columnists that have zero track record, like Jimmy Kempski who started this whole talk with a column two weeks ago based on pure speculation that talk-radio and bloggers have continued to fan the flames, yet are almost trying to will it into existence.

They've never known anything Chip was gonna do personnel-wise hours before it happened let alone weeks or months or over an offseason where they can't get a single quote.

I'm disregarding this dumb shit until it actually happens, at which point I would go apeshit.

Trading Desean would be the dumbest thing they could possibly do right now.
2308042, I would argue that trading DJax for a 3rd rounder would be
Posted by Mignight Maruder, Tue Mar-18-14 08:19 PM
even more asinine than Andy Reid promoting O-Line coach Juan Castillo as the defensive coordinator. Just mind-numbingly stupid. A freakin' 3rd rounder for our most talented and explosive player on the team sans Shady McCoy????! Yeah, I'm not buying that shit at all. Maybe perhaps if it was a 1st and 3rd or something close to that in compensation. But straight for a 3rd? I'll believe it when I see it (and at that point I will definitely go apeshit).
2308058, cosign all of this. i can't conceive of anything he'd have done

to warrant this.

and a 3rd round or even a 2nd round doesn't give the eagles the ammo to get one of the top WRs in a deep draft.

makes absolutely no fucking sense.

w/o desean pulling a safety and dictating coverage, foles and cooper are crashing back to earth. teams will be able to run a lot more complex defensive schemes against the eagles with no desean.

its also messing things up for shady unless you have a comparable deep threat because that extra safety is coming down into the box.

peace & blessings,

If they send him to New England or San Fran for a 3rd?

I'd have to seriously consider whether or not I could support them if they did something that stupid.

Hoping Chip is just 'reaching out' to send a message out to LA in the offseason.

I refuse to believe they could be that stupid.

We'll see how good Nick Foles is then.
2308106, I don't think it's smart, but i can see the logic
Posted by thejerseytornado, Wed Mar-19-14 08:40 AM
Chip's offense never needs a true #1 WR, it needs 4-5 good WRs who are all threats in multiple ways. Desean is so explosive that the fact that's he's practically a one trick pony doesn't matter because he's so damn good at that trick.

but Kelly wants a WR in that position who will run a screen, or a slant, or a go, or a post, or a hitch, or a 5 yard out, or...on any given play (nevermind his love of blocking ability).

it's more like Desean talked about wanting a new contract in January and the writers are dumb and out of the loop and need to create buzz.

i don't think it happens, but i can see Kelly thinking he can bring in a replacement WR who fits the system better (it's a great WR draft, right?) at lower cost so the cap is more manageable. rumor is that if they trade w/ the Pats, it'd be a pick + amendola. amendola kinda fits the Kelly system a bit better...in the 6 or 7 games in which he'd be healthy.

>Chip's offense never needs a true #1 WR, it needs 4-5 good

>explosive that the fact that's he's practically a one trick
>pony doesn't matter because he's so damn good at that trick.
>
They have no receivers on the roster who can beat a safety down the middle of the field in a two-deep zone or a guy that requires double-teams down the sideline.

60 of his 82 catches last year were first downs.

He was Top 5 in yards despite having nobody on the other side for most of the year (Riley Cooper had four truly good games all against shit teams).

He also is a weapon on special-teams who has won games for them returning punts.

That's more than one-trick and it also is the lynchpin for much of what others are able to do in the passing game and even to some degree Shady in the run game.

>but Kelly wants a WR in that position who will run a screen,
>or a slant, or a go, or a post, or a hitch, or a 5 yard out,
>or...on any given play (nevermind his love of blocking

>
Kelly wants a Kelly guy, plain & simple.

They've got plenty of 'blocking' in their receiving corps between two tight ends & Riley Cooper.

>it's more like Desean talked about wanting a new contract in
>January and the writers are dumb and out of the loop and need
>to create buzz.
>
It was a question asked to him by a reporter that he basically rode along with in terms of wanting 'guaranteed' money not even accounting for the fact that his salary was guaranteed as soon as he was on the roster opening day.

He backed off it almost instantly and it wasn't going to be an issue with him due 10 million this season and having just completed his healthiest/most-'engaged' season yet.

If that's all it takes to have Chip hemming and hawing during the offseason or have Roseman making sloppy attempts to deal him, then that's on them.

>i don't think it happens, but i can see Kelly thinking he can
>bring in a replacement WR who fits the system better (it's a
>great WR draft, right?)
They keep saying 'this is the greatest wide receiver class ever!' which seems like complete bullshit to me.

If this one is gonna be better than T.O., Marvin Harrison, Keyshawn, Joe Horn, Eric Moulds, Mushin Muhammad and a couple others I'm forgetting in 1996......I'd like to see it.

at lower cost so the cap is more
>manageable.
they are 25 million or more under the cap.

they are paying Desean 10 million.

They just paid 8 million guaranteed to Riley Cooper & somewhere in the 4-6 million area for Maclin off his second knee surgery.

If they're overinvested in their receiving corps, then skip signing one of the other motherfuckers.

Rookie receivers rarely make a real impact in year one in a system, let alone reach Pro Bowl levels.

And if they deal Desean it makes it that much more likely they use a first or second rounder on another receiver to address the gap that they opened which they currently have filled.

That's a high pick that really needs to be going to a defense with almost no impact players on it.

rumor is that if they trade w/ the Pats, it'd be a
>pick + amendola. amendola kinda fits the Kelly system a bit
>better...in the 6 or 7 games in which he'd be healthy.
>
Amendola is worse than nothing because he won't be healthy and you still have to pay him.

I can't abide by this move.

They've made an issue out of something for no reason when they had a lock Top 3 offense on paper this season along with a layup division title.

This is arrogance.

I'm a Chip Kelly fan but unlike many of my starstruck Eagle friends (as if we've never had a coach win 10 games before, meanwhile Andy did that like 8 times and Ray Rhodes was Coach of the Year and won a playoff game year one).

To the frothy, deluded, management-ballwashing Flyer Fan contingent of Eagle fans, it will be easy for them to sell 'oh well Desean must have been a nightmare/he was gonna hold out/blah blah' (meanwhile Desean has left voicemail and texts for Chip two weeks ago to no reply, which basically told him it was done).

But this is a serious strike against this regime already, that likely will only get worse before it's over.

At least I HOPE that was the thought process. There isn't really anyone left out there worth throwing more than a few million to (other than Alex Mack, who happens to play the one position we do have a decent OL on the line), so they have to pay SOMEONE to fill the cap. I would personally prefer Vick over Schaub as a bridge, but I am OK with him as long as they draft a real QB for the future. Plus it coulda been worse, they coulda signed Mark Sanchez.

Posted by RobOne4, Fri Mar-28-14 02:03 PM
why? why? why?

http://www.csnbayarea.com/raiders/jones-drew-agrees-contract-raiders

Maurice Jones-Drew has agreed to terms on a contract with the Raiders, two league sources confirmed to CSN Bay Area late Thursday night. Exact terms of the contract remain undisclosed.

The veteran running back is scheduled to undergo a physical on Friday morning. If he passes as expected and everything else goes according to plan, a contract will be formally signed later in the day.

Jones-Drew met with general manager Reggie McKenzie on Thursday evening at the team facility. The exchange went well, and the agreed-upon contract offer was made. The sides have been talking for a few weeks now, and this visit was believed to be the final step in an important acquisition.

The Raiders were in need of a strong, consistent rushing presence to headline the unreliable backs currently on the roster. Darren McFadden is talented yet injury prone, Latavius Murray is unproven after missing his rookie year with an ankle injury and Kory Sheets has only had success playing Canadian football.

Jones-Drew is an Oakland native and a Concord De La Salle graduate, and there was an appeal to playing for the team he grew up cheering for. He also wanted a chance to be a major contributor and rebound after averaging a career-low 3.4 yards per carry last season. He struggled with an ankle injury following a clothesline tackle by Raiders safety Charles Woodson, which clearly impacted his play.

He missed most of 2012 with a foot injury that eventually required surgery. Prior to that, Jones-Drew had been productive and durable.

All told, he has 8,071 rushing yards and 68 touchdowns in his illustrious career. He also has excellent ball security, losing just 15 fumbles in eight years.

Before 2013, Jones-Drew never averaged less than 4.2 yards per carry during a professional career spent entirely with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
