this team fucking sucks. and there aint no way around it. the 8-20 team would give these dudes a run.
2263275, I turned away with about 4 mins. to go thinking they had it secured

Guess not

2263279, If Hairston's back, they'll be fine.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Nov-17-13 06:37 PM
At worst fifth in the ACC.
2263281, we lost to Belmont in Chapel Hill....
Posted by Dstl1, Sun Nov-17-13 06:39 PM
these dudes missed 26 free throws, fam.
2263285, To be fair, that was mostly Tokoto.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Nov-17-13 06:44 PM
He couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

Of course, he's the one who gets the final shot too, right around the free throw line. #execution #coaching #prepared
2263287, Tokoto is a waste of a gifted body.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Sun Nov-17-13 06:46 PM
he's a disaster of a player.
2263290, was Tokoto as a C in HS?

(Honest question, as I don't remember.)
2263330, Even if he did, we just reloaded and kept moving.....
Posted by KCPlayer21, Sun Nov-17-13 08:39 PM
Do you realize Kansas has not missed a tourney or been out the top 25 since I was in middle school? And I'm almost 40 years old....

You gon' live forever

2263332, I know all about Kansas' consistency. I'm just saying...
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Nov-17-13 08:42 PM
... that with PJ Hairston, they're not nearly this bad.

There's no question that Roy is as good as his recruits, and since he's lost a lot of them the past few years at UNC (Cal to UK KILLED them), his consistency has been up and down as a result.
2263402, did his KU teams ever get those shellshock losses?
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Sun Nov-17-13 11:29 PM
since he's been at UNC we've had a lot of games where we get the fucking doors blown off* in the first half and (usually) never recover. these losses usually feature Roy looking at his team on some "figure it out" shit. the team getting outhustled, outplayed, out-everything and looking like they forgot they even had a game to play.

*like 40-12 for example.
2263316, What ever happened to Kris Lang?

2263388, Belmont University, Class of 2008. We finally won a "big" game.
Posted by third_i_vision, Sun Nov-17-13 10:55 PM
"Big" in quotations partly because it's just a November game and we're used to winning 25+ every season. We have to win one in the tournament sometime soon or Byrd's gonna retire, IMO.

"Big" is also in quotations because UNC looks like dog shit without Hairston.

Was Tokoto an All-American or do I have a bad memory?

2263400, lmao. who the fuck is BELMONT? i saw this on the news and
Posted by poetx, Sun Nov-17-13 11:13 PM
didn't recognize the colors or nothing. i was like, vermont? that's bad, losing to vermont.

then they showed a close up of a player and i made out 'belmont'. i have never heard of this team before.

damn.

on the other hand, go belmont. beat duke next. i hate them, too.

peace & blessings,

Belmont isn't that bad of a team this year. Regardless, we lost a game in which we were up by 8 in the last two minutes and collapsed; we should have won that game walking away. That one was on Roy. All Belmont did was shoot threes the entire time.

We'll be alright once we get Hairston off the street corner.

2263438, Johnson: "We haven't practiced end-of-game situations." WTF? lol
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Nov-18-13 01:20 AM
After the game, Williams took the blame for the loss. It was in part due to the fact that he admitted he hadn't drilled his team enough on end-of-game situations like the one it botched Sunday.

"We really haven't practiced them," Brice Johnson said. "With the veteran guys on the court, I think we would know some things. But we just froze up in the moment in the end."

12. North Carolina

I know this will come across like an "if my aunt had a penis, she'd be my uncle" statement, but if North Carolina hadn't lost to Belmont and UAB, I think the Tar Heels would be ranked no. 1 in the country. After all, nobody in college basketball has a trio of wins nearly as impressive as North Carolina's victories over Louisville, Michigan State, and Kentucky. I know that losing those two games raises red flags for some people, but remember that Belmont is good enough to make the NCAA tournament (and get absolutely destroyed like they always do). Plus, North Carolina wasn't playing Stanford football those two games, so they really shouldn't even count.

North Carolina fans are probably sick of hearing about P.J. Hairston and Leslie McDonald, who are both suspended indefinitely. It doesn't appear that they're going to become eligible anytime soon, and the Heels are doing fine without them. But Hairston and McDonald remain important because they are decent shooters and North Carolina is one outside shooting threat away from being the best team in college basketball. As of now, these Tar Heels are unlike any Roy Williams Carolina team I've seen — they have a nasty streak, they play great defense, they dominate the boards, and they know how to win ugly. Unfortunately, they can't shoot to save their lives.1 Williams has had physical big men before, like Tyler "Tim Tebow of basketball" Hansbrough and Sean "Foul on James Augustine" May. But he's never had an entire team like this, which is why if the Heels had any perimeter offense besides Marcus Paige, they could be almost unbeatable.

Speaking of Paige, it can't be understated how great he has been this season. There are many different ways to approach voting on the Wooden Award, but if you're like me and you think it should go to the most valuable player in America, then Paige should be near the top of your list. I'd entertain arguments for Marcus Smart, Melvin Ejim, Jabari Parker, Chaz Williams, Russ Smith, C.J. Fair, Jordan Adams, and maybe Xavier Thames and Jahii Carson, but outside of Doug McDermott and Shabazz Napier, I don't think anybody has been more important to their team than Paige. Roy Williams's point guards are always valuable, but Paige has barely any perimeter help and he has been forced to carry North Carolina's entire offense for long stretches of games.

Paige's early-season performance has had a Battle of the Alamo vibe. The odds are stacked against him and he's basically just trying to keep his team's head above water until Hairston and McDonald return. There's a chance that, like the real Alamo battle, those reinforcements won't ever arrive and Paige will eventually be overwhelmed. But he's already made it clear that he won't go down without a fight.
2278475, Leslie Mc is BACK!

2278642, Just watched the texas game and... ugh
Posted by Servo, Thu Dec-19-13 12:51 AM
My dvr didn't record the whole thing, so I had to watch the rest on watchespn. It sucked because after they missed two free throws and got the tip in, I saw how much time was left for the recording of the game. Seeing that we were down by 3 with 4 seconds left, overtime was our best hope and there was only like 2 minutes left of the recording at that point. Kind of took all the drama out of the end.

I love watching these guys, but these free throws are killing me. The funny thing is, I can't remember having someone like Paige (what is he at, 90% from the line?).

Great to see McDonald back. He was rusty from the free throw line, but he lit it up from 3 (by our standards).
2279040, Supposedly Hairston may be back within the week
Posted by auragin_boi, Fri Dec-20-13 01:46 AM
With him and McDonald back, I'd expect the 3's and FT's to get better and for the team to be a little more poised.

So what's a real expectation for this team now? Sweet 16? Elite 8? Contenders?

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- P.J. Hairston's career at North Carolina is over after the Tar Heels announced Friday that they would not apply to have the junior guard reinstated by the NCAA.

"I am extremely disappointed for P.J., his family and our team as he will no longer be playing basketball at North Carolina," coach Roy Williams said Friday in a statement. "P.J. made mistakes and I was very disappointed by his actions and now he is suffering the very difficult consequences.

"He is not a bad kid; he just made some mistakes."

Hairston's potential violations came to light in the spring after a traffic stop turned up information indicating he had used premium rental cars paid for by third parties.

North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham said Friday that the university's joint review with the NCAA made it clear that Hairston's reinstatement "would not be possible."

"Since summer, P.J. has been outstanding with our basketball program and with his schoolwork," Williams said. "... P.J. has learned from this experience and will continue to grow as a player and adult. I will support him and help him as much as I possibly can as he enters this next phase of his life and basketball career."

Fifth-year senior guard Leslie McDonald was cleared to play by the NCAA on Wednesday after missing the first nine games of the regular season for receiving impermissible benefits. He scored 15 points in the Heels' 86-63 loss to Texas.

According to the NCAA's statement, North Carolina discovered McDonald's violations on Oct. 24 and submitted a reinstatement request on Dec. 11.

McDonald must pay restitution of $1,783 to a charity of his choice after the school and the NCAA concluded he accepted "the use of luxury cars, payment of parking tickets, a cellphone and lodging" during the spring and summer of 2013. The total must be paid in full before North Carolina's regular-season finale March 8 at Duke.

Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Dec-20-13 04:01 PM
He should hold out in hopes that he can sneak into the bottom of the first with workouts and what have you. Not sure if it'll happen in this draft (I maintain he should've left last year), but it's not impossible.
2279155, GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry but I have no sympathy for him.
